Lifting Frobenius splittings through geometric vertex decomposition

Frobenius splitting, pioneered by Hochster and Roberts in the 1970s and Mehta and Ramanathan in the 1980s, is a technique in characteristic $p$ commutative algebra and algebraic geometry used to control singularities. In the aughts, Knutson showed that Frobenius splittings of a certain type descend through Gröbner degeneration of a certain type, called geometric vertex decomposition. In the present paper, we give a partial converse to Knutson's result. We show that a Frobenius splitting that compatibly splits both link and deletion of a geometric vertex decomposition can, under an additional hypothesis on the form of the splitting, be lifted to a splitting that compatibly splits the original ideal. We discuss an example showing that the additional hypothesis cannot be removed. Our argument uses the relationship between geometric vertex decomposition and Gorenstein liaison developed by Klein and Rajchgot. Additionally, we show that Li's double determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors are Frobenius split.

Hook-decomposable modules and their resolutions

We compare several classes of biparameter persistence modules: $γ$-products of monoparameter modules, hook-decomposable modules, modules admitting a Smith-type structure theorem, and modules of projective dimension at most 1. We determine all logical implications among these classes, providing explicit counterexamples showing that the converses fail when appropriate. In particular, $γ$-products (i.e., hook-decomposable modules) form a very small subclass of biparameter modules, precisely the ones for which a structure theorem still holds, thus making explicit the richer structural complexity of the biparameter setting compared to the monoparameter one.

Retrieving biparameter persistence modules from monoparameter ones: a characterization of hook-decomposable persistence modules

Motivated by the need to relate the biparameter persistence module induced by a pair of scalar functions with the monoparameter persistence modules induced by each function separately, we introduce a construction that defines a kind of product between two monoparameter persistence modules. While originally conceived to serve this comparative purpose, our construction unexpectedly reveals a deeper structural property: it also characterizes a class of biparameter modules known as hook-decomposable modules.

On the rate of generic Gorenstein $K$-algebras

The rate of a standard graded $K$-algebra $A$ is a measure of the growth of the shifts in a minimal free resolution of $K$ as an $A$-module. In particular $A$ has rate one if and only if it is Koszul. It is known that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra of embedding dimension $n \geq 3$ and socle degree $s=3$ is Koszul. We prove that a generic Artinian Gorenstein algebra with $n\geq 4$ and $s \ge 3 $ has rate $ \lfloor \frac{s}{2} \rfloor. $ In the process we show that such an algebra is generated in degree $\lfloor \frac{s}{2} \rfloor +1. $ This gives a partial positive answer to a longstanding conjecture stated by the first author on the minimal free resolution of a generic Artinian Gorenstein ring of odd socle degree.

Generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels

Binomial edge ideals associated to a simple graph G were introduced by Herzog and collaborators and, independently, by Ohtani. They became an ``instant classic" in combinatorial commutative algebra with more than 100 papers devoted to their investigation over the past 15 years. They exhibit many striking properties, including being radical and, moreover, Cartwright-Sturmfels. Using the fact that binomial edge ideals can be seen as ideals of 2-minors of a matrix of variables with two rows, generalized binomial edge ideals of 2-minors of matrices of m rows were introduced by Rauh and proved to be radical. The goal of this paper is to prove that generalized binomial edge ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels. On the way we provide results on ideal constructions preserving the Cartwright-Sturmfels property. We also give examples and counterexamples to the Cartwright-Sturmfels property for higher minors.

Invariants of toric double determinantal rings

We study a class of double determinantal ideals denoted $I_{mn}^r$, which are generated by minors of size 2, and show that they are equal to the Hibi rings of certain finite distributive lattices. We compute the number of minimal generators of $I_{mn}^r$, as well as the multiplicity, regularity, a-invariant, Hilbert function, and $h$-polynomial of the ring $R/I_{mn}^r$, and we give a new proof of the dimension of $R/I_{mn}^r$. We also characterize when the ring $R/I_{mn}^r$ is Gorenstein, thereby answering a question of Li in the toric case. Finally, we give combinatorial descriptions of the facets of the Stanley-Reisner complex of the initial ideal of $I_{mn}^r$ with respect to a diagonal term order.

Radical support for multigraded ideals

Can one tell if an ideal is radical just by looking at the degrees of the generators? In general, this is hopeless. However, there are special collections of degrees in multigraded polynomial rings, with the property that any multigraded ideal generated by elements of those degrees is radical. We call such a collection of degrees a radical support. In this paper, we give a combinatorial characterization of radical supports. Our characterization is in terms of properties of cycles in an associated labelled graph. We also show that the notion of radical support is closely related to that of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals. In fact, any ideal generated by multigraded generators whose multidegrees form a radical support is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal. Conversely, a collection of degrees such that any multigraded ideal generated by elements of those degrees is Cartwright-Sturmfels is a radical support.

A characteristic free approach to secant varieties of triple Segre products

The goal of this short note is to study the secant varieties of the triple Segre product of type (1,a,b) by means of the standard tools of combinatorial commutative algebra. We reprove and extend to arbitrary characteristic results of Landsberg and Weyman regarding the defining ideal and the Cohen-Macaulay property of the secant varieties. Furthermore for these varieties we compute the degree and give a bound for their Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity which is sharp in many cases.

Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals associated to graphs and linear spaces

Inspired by work of Cartwright and Sturmfels, in a previous paper we introduced two classes of multigraded ideals named after them. These ideals are defined in terms of properties of their multigraded generic initial ideals. The goal of this paper is showing that three families of ideals that have recently attracted the attention of researchers are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals. More specifically, we prove that binomial edge ideals, multigraded homogenizations of linear spaces, and multiview ideals are Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals, hence recovering and extending recent results of Herzog-Hibi-Hreinsdottir-Kahle-Rauh, Ohtani, Ardila-Boocher, Aholt-Sturmfels-Thomas, and Binglin Li. We also propose a conjecture on the rigidity of local cohomology modules of Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals, that was inspired by a theorem of Brion. We provide some evidence for the conjecture by proving it in the monomial case.

Singularities and radical initial ideals

What kind of reduced monomial schemes can be obtained as a Gröbner degeneration of a smooth projective variety? Our conjectured answer is: only Stanley-Reisner schemes associated to acyclic Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes. This would imply, in particular, that only curves of genus zero have such a degeneration. We prove this conjecture for degrevlex orders, for elliptic curves over real number fields, for boundaries of cross-polytopes, and for leafless graphs. We discuss consequences for rational and F-rational singularities of algebras with straightening laws.

On jet schemes of pfaffian ideals

Jet schemes and arc spaces received quite a lot of attention by researchers after their introduction, due to J. Nash, and established their importance as an object of study in M. Kontsevich's motivic integration theory. Several results point out that jet schemes carry a rich amount of geometrical information about the original object they stem from, whereas, from an algebraic point of view, little is know about them. In this paper we study some algebraic properties of jet schemes ideals of pfaffian varieties and we determine under which conditions the corresponding jet scheme varieties are irreducible.

Universal Groebner bases and Cartwright-Sturmfels ideals

We describe the universal Groebner basis of the ideal of maximal minors and the ideal of $2$-minors of a multigraded matrix of linear forms. Our results imply that the ideals are radical and provide bounds on the regularity. In particular, the ideals of maximal minors have linear resolutions. Our main theoretical contribution consists of introducing two new classes of ideals named after Cartwright and Sturmfels, and proving that they are closed under multigraded hyperplane sections. The gins of the ideals that we study enjoy special properties.

Multigraded generic initial ideals of determinantal ideals

Let I be either the ideal of maximal minors or the ideal of 2-minors of a row graded or column graded matrix of linear forms L. In two previous papers we showed that I is a Cartwright-Sturmfels ideal, that is, the multigraded generic initial ideal gin(I) of I is radical (and essentially independent of the term order chosen). In this paper we describe generators and prime decomposition of gin(I) in terms of data related to the linear dependences among the row or columns of the submatrices of L. In the case of 2-minors we also give a closed formula for its multigraded Hilbert series.

Invariants of ideals generated by pfaffians

Ideals generated by pfaffians are of interest in commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, as well as in combinatorics. In this article we compute multiplicity and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of pfaffian ideals of ladders. We give explicit formulas for some families of ideals, and indicate a procedure that allows to recursively compute the invariants of any pfaffian ideal of ladder. Our approach makes an essential use of liaison theory.

Universal Groebner bases for maximal minors

A set of polynomials G in a polynomial ring S over a field is said to be a universal Groebner basis, if G is a Groebner basis with respect to every term order on S. Twenty years ago Bernstein, Sturmfels, and Zelevinsky proved that the set of the maximal minors of a matrix X of variables is a universal Groebner basis. Boocher recently proved that any initial ideal of the ideal of maximal minors of X has a linear resolution. In this paper we give a quick proof of the results mentioned above. Our proof is based on a specialization argument. Then we show that similar statements hold in a more general setting, for matrices of linear forms satisfying certain homogeneity conditions. More precisely, we show that the set of maximal minors of a matrix L of linear forms is a universal Groebner basis for the ideal I that it generates, provided that L is column-graded. Under the same assumption we show that every initial ideal of I has a linear resolution. Furthermore, the projective dimension of I and of its initial ideals is n-m, unless I=0 or a column of L is identically 0. Here L is a matrix of size m times n, and m is smaller than or equal to n. If instead L is row-graded, then we prove that I has a universal Groebner basis of elements of degree m and that every initial ideal of I has a linear resolution, provided that I has the expected codimension. The proofs are based on a rigidity property of radical Borel fixed ideals in a multigraded setting: We prove that if two Borel fixed ideals I and J have the same multigraded Hilbert series and I is radical, then I = J. We also discuss some of the consequences of this rigidity property.

Koszul algebras and regularity

This is a survey paper on commutative Koszul algebras and Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity. We describe several techniques to establish the Koszulness of algebras. We discuss variants of the Koszul property such as strongly Koszul, absolutely Koszul and universally Koszul. We present several open problems related with these notions and their local variants.

Gröbner bases of ideals cogenerated by Pfaffians

We characterise the class of one-cogenerated Pfaffian ideals whose natural generators form a Gröbner basis with respect to any anti-diagonal term-order. We describe their initial ideals as well as the associated simplicial complexes, which turn out to be shellable and thus Cohen-Macaulay. We also provide a formula for computing their multiplicity.

Integrally closed and componentwise linear ideals

In two dimensional regular local rings integrally closed ideals have a unique factorization property and have a Cohen-Macaulay associated graded ring. In higher dimension these properties do not hold for general integrally closed ideals and the goal of the paper is to identify a subclass of integrally closed ideals for which they do. We restrict our attention to 0-dimensional homogeneous ideals in polynomial rings $R$ of arbitrary dimension and identify a class of integrally closed ideals, the Goto-class $\G^*$, that is closed under product and that has a suitable unique factorization property. Ideals in $\G^*$ have a Cohen-Macaulay associated graded ring if either they are monomial or $\dim R\leq 3$. Our approach is based on the study of the relationship between the notions of integrally closed, contracted, full and componentwise linear ideals.
