Finite temperature dynamical correlations for the dimerized spin-1/2 chain

We use the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG) to compute the frequency and momentum resolved spin-spin correlation functions of a dimerized spin-1/2 chain under a magnetic field at finite temperature. The spectral features strongly depend on the regime of the magnetic field. For increasing magnetic fields, the transitions from a gapped spin liquid phase to a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and then to a totally polarized phase, can be identified in the spectra. Compared to the zero temperature case, the finite temperature excitations give rise to additional spectral features that we compute numerically and identify analytically as transitions from thermally excited states. We compute quantitatively the broadening of the dispersion of a single spin-flip excitation due to the temperature and find a strong asymmetric broadening. We discuss the consequences of these findings for neutron experiments on dimerized one dimensional quantum chains.

Finite-temperature correlations in a quantum spin chain near saturation

Inelastic neutron-scattering and finite-temperature density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations are used to investigate the spin excitation spectrum of the $S=1/2$ Heisenberg spin chain compound K$_2$CuSO$_4$Cl$_2$ at several temperatures in a magnetic field near saturation. Critical correlations characteristic of the predicted $z=2$, $d=1$ quantum phase transition occurring at saturation are shown to be consistent with the observed neutron spectra. The data is well described with a scaling function computed using a free fermion description of the spins, valid close to saturation, and the corresponding scaling limits. One of the most prominent non-universal spectral features of the data is a novel thermally activated longitudinal mode that remains underdamped across most of the Brillouin zone.

Quantum quenches in one-dimensional gapless systems: Does bosonization work?

We present a comparison between the bosonization results for quantum quenches and exact diagonalizations in microscopic models of interacting spinless fermions in a one-dimensional lattice. We show that important features are missed by the bosonization technique, which predicts the persistence of long-wavelength critical properties in the long-time evolution. Instead, numerical analysis provides puzzling evidences: while the momentum distribution appears to be consistent with the presence of a singularity at $k_F$, density-density correlations at small momenta clearly display a thermal-like behavior, namely ${\bar{N}}_q \simeq {\rm const}$ (where the overbar indicates the long-time average). This feature at small momenta is preserved in presence of an interaction term that breaks integrability, together with a rounding of the singularities at finite $q$'s, showing that the bosonization approach is not able to represent the time evolution of generic one-dimensional models after a quantum quench.
