Stability conditions and moduli spaces on projective families

We extend the construction of stability conditions on projective schemes over a field to projective families over an arbitrary base, and prove that they admit proper relative moduli spaces of semistable objects. We also prove a number of complementary results: the existence of mass-Hom bounds for these stability conditions, as conjectured by Halpern-Leistner and Robotis; a comparison with tilt-stability on surfaces and threefolds; a construction of stability conditions on the supported derived category of total spaces of certain vector bundles, including all local Calabi--Yau varieties; and a simple new proof of Bondal and Orlov's reconstruction theorem.

The geometry of antisymplectic involutions, II

We continue our study of fixed loci of antisymplectic involutions on projective hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type induced by an ample class of square 2 in the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki lattice. We prove that if the divisibility of the ample class is 2, then one connected component of the fixed locus is a Fano manifold of index 3, thus generalizing to higher dimensions the case of the LLSvS 8-fold associated to a cubic fourfold. We also show that, in the case of the LLSvS 8-fold associated to a cubic fourfold, the second component of the fixed locus is of general type, thus answering a question by Manfred Lehn.

Hyper-Kähler varieties: Lagrangian fibrations, atomic sheaves, and categories

We review recent developments in the theory of compact hyper-Kähler varieties, from the viewpoint of Lagrangian fibrations, moduli spaces of stable sheaves, and derived categories. These notes originated from the lecture by the second named author at the 2025 Summer Institute in Algebraic Geometry, Colorado State University, Fort Collins (USA), July 14 - August 1, 2025.

Stability conditions on products of curves and Hilbert schemes of surfaces

We prove that stability conditions on the derived category of a product of curves of positive genus are uniquely determined by their central charge and the phase of skyscraper sheaves. As an application, we construct stability conditions on Hilbert schemes of points on certain surfaces, including some K3 surfaces of Kummer type.

Mukai bundles on Fano threefolds

We give a proof of Mukai's Theorem on the existence of certain exceptional vector bundles on prime Fano threefolds. To our knowledge this is the first complete proof in the literature. The result is essential for Mukai's biregular classification of prime Fano threefolds, and for the existence of semiorthogonal decompositions in their derived categories. Our approach is based on Lazarsfeld's construction that produces vector bundles on a variety from globally generated line bundles on a divisor, on Mukai's theory of stable vector bundles on K3 surfaces, and on Brill--Noether properties of curves and (in the sense of Mukai) of K3 surfaces.

Mukai models of Fano varieties

We give a self-contained and simplified proof of Mukai's classification of prime Fano threefolds of index 1 and genus $g \ge 6$ with at most Gorenstein factorial terminal singularities, and of its extension to higher-dimension.

Computing Riemann-Roch polynomials and classifying hyper-Kähler fourfolds

We prove that a hyper-Kähler fourfold satisfying a mild topological assumption is of K3$^{[2]}$ deformation type. This proves in particular a conjecture of O'Grady stating that hyper-Kähler fourfolds of K3$^{[2]}$ numerical type are of K3$^{[2]}$ deformation type. Our topological assumption concerns the existence of two integral degree-2 cohomology classes satisfying certain numerical intersection conditions. There are two main ingredients in the proof. We first prove a topological version of the statement, by showing that our topological assumption forces the Betti numbers, the Fujiki constant, and the Huybrechts-Riemann-Roch polynomial of the hyper-Kähler fourfold to be the same as those of K3$^{[2]}$ hyper-Kähler fourfolds. The key part of the article is then to prove the hyper-Kähler SYZ conjecture for hyper-Kähler fourfolds for divisor classes satisfying the numerical condition mentioned above.

The geometry of antisymplectic involutions, I

We study fixed loci of antisymplectic involutions on projective hyperkähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type. When the involution is induced by an ample class of square 2 in the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki lattice, we show that the number of connected components of the fixed locus is equal to the divisibility of the class, which is either 1 or 2.

Complete curves in the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces and hyper-Kähler manifolds

Building on an idea of Borcherds, Katzarkov, Pantev, and Shepherd-Barron (who treated the case $e=14$), we prove that the moduli space of polarized K3 surfaces of degree $2e$ contains complete curves for all $e\geq 62$ and for some sporadic lower values of $e$ (starting at $14$). We also construct complete curves in the moduli spaces of polarized hyper-Kähler manifolds of $\mathrm{K3}^{[n]}$-type or $\mathrm{Kum}_n$-type for all $n\ge 1$ and polarizations of various degrees and divisibilities.

Stability conditions in families

We develop a theory of Bridgeland stability conditions and moduli spaces of semistable objects for a family of varieties. Our approach is based on and generalizes previous work by Abramovich-Polishchuk, Kuznetsov, Lieblich, and Piyaratne-Toda. Our notion includes openness of stability, semistable reduction, a support property uniformly across the family, and boundedness of semistable objects. We show that such a structure exists whenever stability conditions are known to exist on the fibers. Our main application is the generalization of Mukai's theory for moduli spaces of semistable sheaves on K3 surfaces to moduli spaces of Bridgeland semistable objects in the Kuznetsov component associated to a cubic fourfold. This leads to the extension of theorems by Addington-Thomas and Huybrechts on the derived category of special cubic fourfolds, to a new proof of the integral Hodge conjecture, and to the construction of an infinite series of unirational locally complete families of polarized hyperkähler manifolds of K3 type. Other applications include the deformation-invariance of Donaldson-Thomas invariants counting Bridgeland stable objects on Calabi-Yau threefolds, and a method for constructing stability conditions on threefolds via degeneration.

Stability conditions on Kuznetsov components

We introduce a general method to induce Bridgeland stability conditions on semiorthogonal components of triangulated categories. In particular, we prove the existence of Bridgeland stability conditions on the Kuznetsov component of the derived category of Fano threefolds and of cubic fourfolds. As an application, in the appendix, written jointly with Xiaolei Zhao, we give a variant of the proof of the Torelli theorem for cubic fourfolds by Huybrechts and Rennemo.

MMP for moduli of sheaves on K3s via wall-crossing: nef and movable cones, Lagrangian fibrations

We use wall-crossing with respect to Bridgeland stability conditions to systematically study the birational geometry of a moduli space M of stable sheaves on a K3 surface X: 1. We describe the nef cone, the movable cone, and the effective cone of M in terms of the Mukai lattice of X. 2. We establish a long-standing conjecture that predicts the existence of a birational Lagrangian fibration on M whenever M admits an integral divisor class D of square zero (with respect to the Beauville-Bogomolov form). These results are proved using a natural map from the space of Bridgeland stability conditions Stab(X) to the cone Mov(X) of movable divisors on M; this map relates wall-crossing in Stab(X) to birational transformations of M. In particular, every minimal model of M appears as a moduli space of Bridgeland-stable objects on X.

On the period map for polarized hyperkähler fourfolds

This is an improved version of the eprint previously entitled "Unexpected isomorphisms between hyperkähler fourfolds." We study smooth projective hyperkähler fourfolds that are deformations of Hilbert squares of K3 surfaces and are equipped with a polarization of fixed degree and divisibility. They are parametrized by a quasi-projective irreducible 20-dimensional moduli space and Verbitksy's Torelli theorem implies that their period map is an open embedding. Our main result is that the complement of the image of the period map is a finite union of explicit Heegner divisors that we describe. We also prove that infinitely many Heegner divisors in a given period space have the property that their general points correspond to fourfolds which are isomorphic to Hilbert squares of a K3 surfaces, or to double EPW sextics. In two appendices, we determine the groups of biregular or birational automorphisms of various projective hyperkähler fourfolds with Picard number 1 or 2.

Stability and Applications

We give a brief overview of Bridgeland's theory of stability conditions, focusing on applications to algebraic geometry. We sketch the basic ideas in Bayer's proof of the Brill--Noether Theorem and in the authors' proof of a theorem by Gruson--Peskine and Harris on the genus of space curves. This note originated from the lecture of the first author at the conference From Algebraic Geometry to Vision and AI: A Symposium Celebrating the Mathematical Work of David Mumford, held at the Center of Mathematical Sciences and Applications, Harvard University, August 18-20, 2018.

Lectures on Bridgeland Stability

In these lecture notes we give an introduction to Bridgeland stability conditions on smooth complex projective varieties with a particular focus on the case of surfaces. This includes basic definitions of stability conditions on derived categories, basics on moduli spaces of stable objects and variation of stability. These notes originated from lecture series by the first author at the summer school "Recent advances in algebraic and arithmetic geometry", Siena, Italy, August 24-28, 2015 and at the school "Moduli of Curves", CIMAT, Guanajuato, Mexico, February 22 - March 4, 2016.

Derived categories and the genus of space curves

We generalize a classical result about the genus of curves in projective space by Gruson and Peskine to principally polarized abelian threefolds of Picard rank one. The proof is based on wall-crossing techniques for ideal sheaves of curves in the derived category. In the process, we obtain bounds for Chern characters of other stable objects such as rank two sheaves. The argument gives a proof for projective space as well. In this case these techniques also indicate an approach for a conjecture by Hartshorne and Hirschowitz and we prove first steps towards it.

Lectures on non-commutative K3 surfaces, Bridgeland stability, and moduli spaces

We survey the basic theory of non-commutative K3 surfaces, with a particular emphasis to the ones arising from cubic fourfolds. We focus on the problem of constructing Bridgeland stability conditions on these categories and we then investigate the geometry of the corresponding moduli spaces of stable objects. We discuss a number of consequences related to cubic fourfolds including new proofs of the Torelli theorem and of the integral Hodge conjecture, the extension of a result of Addington and Thomas and various applications to hyperkähler manifolds. These notes originated from the lecture series by the first author at the school on "Birational Geometry of Hypersurfaces", Palazzo Feltrinelli - Gargnano del Garda (Italy), March 19-23, 2018.
