Proposal for the validation of Monte Carlo implementations of the standard model effective field theory

We propose a procedure to cross-validate Monte Carlo implementations of the standard model effective field theory. It is based on the numerical comparison of squared amplitudes computed at specific phase-space and parameter points in pairs of implementations. Interactions are fully linearised in the effective field theory expansion. The squares of linear effective field theory amplitudes and their interference with standard-model contributions are compared separately. Such pairwise comparisons are primarily performed at tree level and a possible extension to the one-loop level is also briefly considered. We list the current standard model effective field theory implementations and the comparisons performed to date.

Lattice QCD and nuclear physics for searches of physics beyond the Standard Model

Low-energy tests of fundamental symmetries are extremely sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model, reaching scales that are comparable, if not higher, than directly accessible at the energy frontier. The interpretation of low-energy precision experiments and their connection with models of physics beyond the Standard Model relies on controlling the theoretical uncertainties induced by the nonperturbative nature of QCD at low energy and of the nuclear interactions. In these proceedings, I will discuss how the interplay of Lattice QCD and nuclear Effective Field Theories can lead to improved predictions for low-energy experiments, with controlled uncertainties. I will describe the framework of chiral Effective Field Theory, and then discuss a few examples, including non-standard $β$ decays, neutrinoless double beta decay and searches for electric dipole moments, to highlight the progress achieved in recent years, and the role that Lattice QCD will play in addressing the remaining open problems.

Electric dipole moments: a theory overview

Electric dipole moments are extremely sensitive probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. A vibrant experimental program is in place, with the goal of improving existing bounds on the electron and neutron electric dipole moments by one or two orders of magnitude, while testing new ideas for the measurement of electric dipole moments of light ions, such as the proton and the deuteron, at a comparable level. The success of this program, and its implications for physics beyond the Standard Model, relies on the precise calculation of the electric dipole moments in terms of the couplings of CP-violating operators induced by beyond-the-Standard-Model physics. In light of the nonperturbative nature of both QCD at low energy and of the nuclear interactions, these calculations have proven difficult, and are affected by large theoretical uncertainties. In this talk I will review the progress that has been achieved on different aspects of the calculation of hadronic and nuclear EDMs, the challenges that remain to be faced, and the implications for our understanding of physics beyond the Standard Model.

NLO QCD corrections to SM-EFT dilepton and electroweak Higgs boson production, matched to parton shower in POWHEG

We discuss the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SM-EFT) contributions to neutral- and charge-current Drell-Yan production, associated production of the Higgs and a vector boson, and Higgs boson production via vector boson fusion. We consider all the dimension-six SM-EFT operators that contribute to these processes at leading order, include next-to-leading order QCD corrections, and interface them with parton showering and hadronization in Pythia8 according to the POWHEG method. We discuss existing constraints on the coefficients of dimension-six operators and identify differential and angular distributions that can differentiate between different effective operators, pointing to specific features of Beyond-the-Standard-Model physics.

Lattice QCD spectroscopy for hadronic CP violation

The interpretation of nuclear electric dipole moment (EDM) experiments is clouded by large theoretical uncertainties associated with nonperturbative matrix elements. In various beyond-the-Standard Model scenarios nuclear and diamagnetic atomic EDMs are expected to be dominated by CP-violating pion-nucleon interactions that arise from quark chromo-electric dipole moments. The corresponding CP-violating pion-nucleon coupling strengths are, however, poorly known. In this work we propose a strategy to calculate these couplings by using spectroscopic lattice QCD techniques. Instead of directly calculating the pion-nucleon coupling constants, a challenging task, we use chiral symmetry relations that link the pion-nucleon couplings to nucleon sigma terms and mass splittings that are significantly easier to calculate. In this work, we show that these relations are reliable up to next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion in both SU(2) and SU(3) chiral perturbation theory. We conclude with a brief discussion about practical details regarding the required lattice QCD calculations and the phenomenological impact of an improved understanding of CP-violating matrix elements.

Strong isospin violation and chiral logarithms in the baryon spectrum

We present a precise lattice QCD calculation of the contribution to the neutron-proton mass splitting arising from strong isospin breaking, $m_n-m_p|_{QCD}=2.32\pm0.17$ MeV. We also determine $m_{Ξ^-} - m_{Ξ^0}|_{QCD} = 5.44\pm0.31$ MeV. The calculation is performed at three values of the pion mass, with several values of the quark mass splitting and multiple lattice volumes, but only a single lattice spacing and an estimate of discretization errors. The calculations are performed on the anisotropic clover-Wilson ensembles generated by the Hadron Spectrum Collaboration. The omega-baryon mass is used to set the scale $a_t^{-1}=6111\pm127$ MeV, while the kaon masses are used to determine the value of the light-quark mass spitting. The nucleon mass splitting is then determined as a function of the pion mass. We observe, for the first time, conclusive evidence for non-analytic light quark mass dependence in lattice QCD calculations of the baryon spectrum. When left as a free parameter, the fits prefer a nucleon axial coupling of $g_A=1.24(56)$. To highlight the presence of this chiral logarithm in the nucleon mass splitting, we also compute the isospin splitting in the cascade-baryon system which is less sensitive to chiral dynamics. Finally, we update the best lattice QCD determination of the CP-odd pion-nucleon coupling that would arise from a non-zero QCD theta-term, $\bar{g}_0 / (\sqrt{2}f_π) = (14.7\pm1.8\pm1.4) \cdot 10^{-3} \barθ$. The original lattice QCD correlation functions, analysis results and extrapolated quantities are packaged in HDF5 files made publicly available including a simple Python script to access the numerical results, construct effective mass plots along with our analysis results, and perform the extrapolations of various quantities determined in this work.

Effective field theory approach to heavy quark fragmentation

Using an approach based on Soft Collinear Effective Theory (SCET) and Heavy Quark Effective Theory (HQET) we determine the $b$-quark fragmentation function from electron-positron annihilation data at the $Z$-boson peak at next-to-next-to leading order, with next-to-next-to leading log resummation of DGLAP logarithms, and next-to-next-to-next-to leading log resummation of endpoint logarithms. This analysis improves, by one order, the previous extraction of the $b$-quark fragmentation function. We find that while the addition of the next order in the calculation does not much shift the extracted form of the fragmentation function, it does reduce theoretical errors indicating that the expansion is converging. Using an approach based on effective field theory allows us to systematically control theoretical errors. While the fits of theory to data are generally good, the fits seem to be hinting that higher order correction from HQET may be needed to explain the $b$-quark fragmentation function at smaller values of momentum fraction.

Neutron Electric Dipole Moment from quark Chromoelectric Dipole Moment

The connection between a regularization-independent symmetric momentum substraction (RI-$\tilde{\rm S}$MOM) and the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme for the quark chromo EDM operators is discussed. A method for evaluating the neutron EDM from quark chromoEDM is described. A preliminary study of the signal in the matrix element using clover quarks on a highly improved staggered quark (HISQ) ensemble is shown.

Baryon mass splittings and strong CP violation in SU(3) Chiral Perturbation Theory

We study $SU(3)$ flavor-breaking corrections to the relation between the octet baryon masses and the nucleon-meson CP-violating interactions induced by the QCD $\barθ$ term. We work within the framework of $SU(3)$ chiral perturbation theory and work through next-to-next-to-leading order in the $SU(3)$ chiral expansion, which is $\mathcal{O}(m_q^2)$. At lowest order, the CP-odd couplings induced by the QCD $\barθ$ term are determined by mass splittings of the baryon octet, the classic result of Crewther et al. We show that for each isospin-invariant CP-violating nucleon-meson interaction there exists one relation which is respected by loop corrections up to the order we work, while other leading-order relations are violated. With these relations we extract a precise value of the pion-nucleon coupling $\bar g_0$ by using recent lattice QCD evaluations of the proton-neutron mass splitting. In addition, we derive semi-precise values for CP-violating coupling constants between heavier mesons and nucleons with $\sim 30\%$ uncertainty and discuss their phenomenological impact on electric dipole moments of nucleons and nuclei.

Nucleon Electric Dipole Moments and the Isovector Parity- and Time-Reversal-Odd Pion-Nucleon Coupling

The isovector time-reversal- and parity-violating pion-nucleon coupling $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$ is uniquely sensitive to dimension six interactions between right-handed light quarks and the Standard Model Higgs doublet that naturally arises in left-right symmetric models. Recent work has used the $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$-induced one-loop contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment $d_n$, together with the present experimental $d_n$ bound, to constrain the CP-violating parameters of the left-right symmetric model. We show that this and related analyses are based on an earlier meson theory $d_n$ computation that is not consistent with the power-counting appropriate for an effective field theory. We repeat the one-loop calculation using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and find that the resulting $d_n$ sensitivity to $\bar{g}_π^{(1)}$ is suppressed, implying more relaxed constraints on the parameter space of the left-right symmetric model. Assuming no cancellations between this loop contribution and other contributions, such as the leading order EDM low-energy constant, the present limit on $d_n$ implies $|\bar{g}_π^{(1)}| \lesssim 1.1\times 10^{-10}$.

Heavy Quark Fragmenting Jet Functions

Heavy quark fragmenting jet functions describe the fragmentation of a parton into a jet containing a heavy quark, carrying a fraction of the jet momentum. They are two-scale objects, sensitive to the heavy quark mass, $m_Q$, and to a jet resolution variable, $τ_N$. We discuss how cross sections for heavy flavor production at high transverse momentum can be expressed in terms of heavy quark fragmenting jet functions, and how the properties of these functions can be used to achieve a simultaneous resummation of logarithms of the jet resolution variable, and logarithms of the quark mass. We calculate the heavy quark fragmenting jet function $\mathcal G_Q^Q$ at $\mathcal O(α_s)$, and the gluon and light quark fragmenting jet functions into a heavy quark, $\mathcal G_g^Q$ and $\mathcal G_l^Q$, at $\mathcal O(α_s^2)$. We verify that, in the limit in which the jet invariant mass is much larger than $m_Q$, the logarithmic dependence of the fragmenting jet functions on the quark mass is reproduced by the heavy quark fragmentation functions. The fragmenting jet functions can thus be written as convolutions of the fragmentation functions with the matching coefficients $\mathcal J_{i j}$, which depend only on dynamics at the jet scale. We reproduce the known matching coefficients $\mathcal J_{i j}$ at $\mathcal O(α_s)$, and we obtain the expressions of the coefficients $\mathcal J_{g Q}$ and $\mathcal J_{l Q}$ at $\mathcal O(α_s^2)$. Our calculation provides all the perturbative ingredients for the simultaneous resummation of logarithms of $m_Q$ and $τ_N$.

Hadronic quarkonium decays at order v^7

We compute the complete imaginary part of the NRQCD Lagrangian at order 1/M^4 in the heavy-quark mass expansion, which includes center of mass operators, and at order alpha_s^2 in the matching coefficients. We also compute the imaginary part of the NRQCD Lagrangian at order 1/M^6 and at order alpha_s^2 that contributes to the S-wave and P-wave inclusive decay widths of heavy quarkonium into light hadrons at order v^7 in the heavy-quark velocity expansion. If we count alpha_s(M) ~ v^2, the calculation provides the complete next-to-leading order corrections to the P-wave hadronic widths, and in the original NRQCD power counting, the complete next-to-leading order corrections to the vector S-wave widths, and part of the next-to-next-to leading order corrections to the pseudoscalar S-wave widths. In the S-wave case, we confirm previous findings and add new terms in a more conservative power counting. In the P-wave case, our results are in disagreement with previous ones. Constraints induced by Poincare' invariance on the NRQCD four-fermion sector are studied for the first time and provide an additional check of the calculation. Perspectives for phenomenological applications are discussed.

Electromagnetic quarkonium decays at order v^7

We compute S-wave and P-wave electromagnetic quarkonium decays at order v^7 in the heavy-quark velocity expansion. In the S-wave case, our calculation confirms and completes previous findings. In the P-wave case, our results are in disagreement with previous ones; in particular, we find that two matrix elements less are needed. The cancellation of infrared singularities in the matching procedure is discussed.

Exclusive decays of χ_{bJ} and η_b into two charmed mesons

We develop a framework to study the exclusive two-body decays of bottomonium into two charmed mesons and apply it to study the decays of the C-even bottomonia. Using a sequence of effective field theories, we take advantage of the separation between the scales contributing to the decay processes, 2m_b >> m_c >> Λ_{QCD}. We prove that, at leading order in the EFT power counting, the decay rate factorizes into the convolution of two perturbative matching coefficients and three non-perturbative matrix elements, one for each hadron. We calculate the relations between the decay rate and non-perturbative bottomonium and D-meson matrix elements at leading order, with next-to-leading log resummation. The phenomenological implications of these relations are discussed.
