A Context-Aware Knowledge Graph Platform for Stream Processing in Industrial IoT

Industrial IoT ecosystems bring together sensors, machines and smart devices operating collaboratively across industrial environments. These systems generate large volumes of heterogeneous, high-velocity data streams that require interoperable, secure and contextually aware management. Most of the current stream management architectures, however, still rely on syntactic integration mechanisms, which result in limited flexibility, maintainability and interpretability in complex Industry 5.0 scenarios. This work proposes a context-aware semantic platform for data stream management that unifies heterogeneous IoT/IoE data sources through a Knowledge Graph enabling formal representation of devices, streams, agents, transformation pipelines, roles and rights. The model supports flexible data gathering, composable stream processing pipelines, and dynamic role-based data access based on agents' contexts, relying on Apache Kafka and Apache Flink for real-time processing, while SPARQL and SWRL-based reasoning provide context-dependent stream discovery. Experimental evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of combining semantic models, context-aware reasoning and distributed stream processing to enable interoperable data workflows for Industry 5.0 environments.

A metadata model for profiling multidimensional sources in data ecosystems

The Big Data landscape poses challenges in managing diverse data formats, requiring efficient storage and processing for high-quality analysis. Effective metadata management is crucial for organizing, accessing, and reusing data within these data ecosystems. Existing metadata vocabularies and standard, however, do not adequately accommodate aggregated or summary data. This paper introduces a metadata model to support semantic annotation and profiling of multidimensional data. Defined as an RDF vocabulary, the model provides a flexible and extensible graph representation for metadata at source and attribute levels, aligning dimensions and measures to a reference Knowledge Graph and summarizing value distributions in profiles. An evaluation of the execution time for profile generation is also proposed, across data sources with different cardinalities.

A maturity model for catalogues of semantic artefacts

This work presents a maturity model for assessing catalogues of semantic artefacts, one of the keystones that permit semantic interoperability of systems. We defined the dimensions and related features to include in the maturity model by analysing the current literature and existing catalogues of semantic artefacts provided by experts. In addition, we assessed 26 different catalogues to demonstrate the effectiveness of the maturity model, which includes 12 different dimensions (Metadata, Openness, Quality, Availability, Statistics, PID, Governance, Community, Sustainability, Technology, Transparency, and Assessment) and 43 related features (or sub-criteria) associated with these dimensions. Such a maturity model is one of the first attempts to provide recommendations for governance and processes for preserving and maintaining semantic artefacts and helps assess/address interoperability challenges.

The SemIoE Ontology: A Semantic Model Solution for an IoE-based Industry

Recently, the Industry 5.0 is gaining attention as a novel paradigm, defining the next concrete steps toward more and more intelligent, green-aware and user-centric digital systems. In an era in which smart devices typically adopted in the industry domain are more and more sophisticated and autonomous, the Internet of Things and its evolution, known as the Internet of Everything (IoE, for short), involving also people, robots, processes and data in the network, represent the main driver to allow industries to put the experiences and needs of human beings at the center of their ecosystems. However, due to the extreme heterogeneity of the involved entities, their intrinsic need and capability to cooperate, and the aim to adapt to a dynamic user-centric context, special attention is required for the integration and processing of the data produced by such an IoE. This is the objective of the present paper, in which we propose a novel semantic model that formalizes the fundamental actors, elements and information of an IoE, along with their relationships. In our design, we focus on state-of-the-art design principles, in particular reuse, and abstraction, to build ``SemIoE'', a lightweight ontology inheriting and extending concepts from well-known and consolidated reference ontologies. The defined semantic layer represents a core data model that can be extended to embrace any modern industrial scenario. It represents the base of an IoE Knowledge Graph, on top of which, as an additional contribution, we analyze and define some essential services for an IoE-based industry.
