Hidden symmetry of four-point correlation functions and amplitudes in N=4 SYM

We study the four-point correlation function of stress-tensor supermultiplets in N=4 SYM using the method of Lagrangian insertions. We argue that, as a corollary of N=4 superconformal symmetry, the resulting all-loop integrand possesses an unexpected complete symmetry under the exchange of the four external and all the internal (integration) points. This alone allows us to predict the integrand of the three-loop correlation function up to four undetermined constants. Further, exploiting the conjectured amplitude/correlation function duality, we are able to fully determine the three-loop integrand in the planar limit. We perform an independent check of this result by verifying that it is consistent with the operator product expansion, in particular that it correctly reproduces the three-loop anomalous dimension of the Konishi operator. As a byproduct of our study, we also obtain the three-point function of two half-BPS operators and one Konishi operator at three-loop level. We use the same technique to work out a compact form for the four-loop four-point integrand and discuss the generalisation to higher loops.

Constructing the correlation function of four stress-tensor multiplets and the four-particle amplitude in N=4 SYM

We present a construction of the integrand of the correlation function of four stress-tensor multiplets in N=4 SYM at weak coupling. It does not rely on Feynman diagrams and makes use of the recently discovered symmetry of the integrand under permutations of external and integration points. This symmetry holds for any gauge group, so it can be used to predict the integrand both in the planar and non-planar sectors. We demonstrate the great efficiency of graph-theoretical tools in the systematic study of the possible permutation symmetric integrands. We formulate a general ansatz for the correlation function as a linear combination of all relevant graph topologies, with arbitrary coefficients. Powerful restrictions on the coefficients come from the analysis of the logarithmic divergences of the correlation function in two singular regimes: Euclidean short-distance and Minkowski light-cone limits. We demonstrate that the planar integrand is completely fixed by the procedure up to six loops and probably beyond. In the non-planar sector, we show the absence of non-planar corrections at three loops and we reduce the freedom at four loops to just four constants. Finally, the correlation function/amplitude duality allows us to show the complete agreement of our results with the four-particle planar amplitude in N=4 SYM.

Five-loop Konishi in N=4 SYM

We present a new method for computing the Konishi anomalous dimension in N=4 SYM at weak coupling. It does not rely on the conventional Feynman diagram technique and is not restricted to the planar limit. It is based on the OPE analysis of the four-point correlation function of stress-tensor multiplets, which has been recently constructed up to six loops. The Konishi operator gives the leading contribution to the singlet SU(4) channel of this OPE. Its anomalous dimension is the coefficient of the leading single logarithmic singularity of the logarithm of the correlation function in the double short-distance limit, in which the operator positions coincide pairwise. We regularize the logarithm of the correlation function in this singular limit by a version of dimensional regularization. At any loop level, the resulting singularity is a simple pole whose residue is determined by a finite two-point integral with one loop less. This drastically simplifies the five-loop calculation of the Konishi anomalous dimension by reducing it to a set of known four-loop two-point integrals and two unknown integrals which we evaluate analytically. We obtain an analytic result at five loops in the planar limit and observe perfect agreement with the prediction based on integrability in AdS/CFT.

More on the duality correlators/amplitudes

We continue the study of n-point correlation functions of half-BPS protected operators in N=4 super-Yang-Mills theory, in the limit where the positions of the adjacent operators become light-like separated. We compute the l-loop corrections by making l Lagrangian insertions. We argue that there exists a simple relation between the (n+l)-point tree-level correlator with l Lagrangian insertions and the integrand of the n-particle l-loop MHV scattering amplitude, as obtained by the recent momentum twistor construction of Arkani-Hamed et al. We present several examples of this new duality, at one and two loops.

From correlation functions to Wilson loops

We start with an n-point correlation function in a conformal gauge theory. We show that a special limit produces a polygonal Wilson loop with $n$ sides. The limit takes the $n$ points towards the vertices of a null polygonal Wilson loop such that successive distances $x^2_{i,i+1} \to 0$. This produces a fast moving particle that generates a "frame" for the Wilson loop. We explain in detail how the limit is approached, including some subtle effects from the propagation of a fast moving particle in the full interacting theory. We perform perturbative checks by doing explicit computations in N=4 super-Yang-Mills.

The super-correlator/super-amplitude duality: Part II

We continue the study of the duality between super-correlators and scattering super-amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM. We provide a number of further examples supporting the conjectured duality relation between these two seemingly different objects. We consider the five- and six-point one-loop NMHV and the six-point tree-level NNMHV amplitudes, obtaining them from the appropriate correlators of strength tensor multiplets in N=4 SYM. In particular, we find exact agreement between the rather non-trivial parity-odd sector of the integrand of the six-point one-loop NMHV amplitude, as obtained from the correlator or from BCFW recursion relations. Together these results lead to the conjecture that the integrands of any N^kMHV amplitude at any loop order in planar N=4 SYM can be described by the correlators of stress-tensor multiplets.

The super-correlator/super-amplitude duality: Part I

We extend the recently discovered duality between MHV amplitudes and the light-cone limit of correlation functions of a particular type of local scalar operators to generic non-MHV amplitudes in planar N=4 SYM theory. We consider the natural generalization of the bosonic correlators to super-correlators of stress-tensor multiplets and show, in a number of examples, that their light-cone limit exactly reproduces the square of the matching super-amplitudes. Our correlators are computed at Born level. If all of their points form a light-like polygon, the correlator is dual to the tree-level amplitude. If a subset of points are not on the polygon but are integrated over, they become Lagrangian insertions generating the loop corrections to the correlator. In this case the duality with amplitudes holds at the level of the integrand. We build up the superspace formalism needed to formulate the duality and present the explicit example of the n-point NMHV tree amplitude as the dual of the lowest nilpotent level in the correlator.

On Four-Point Functions of Half-BPS Operators in General Dimensions

We study four-point correlation functions of half-BPS operators of arbitrary weight for all dimensions d=3,4,5,6 where superconformal theories exist. Using harmonic superspace techniques, we derive the superconformal Ward identities for these correlators and present them in a universal form. We then solve these identities, employing Jack polynomial expansions. We show that the general solution is parameterized by a set of arbitrary two-variable functions, with the exception of the case d=4, where in addition functions of a single variable appear. We also discuss the operator product expansion using recent results on conformal partial wave amplitudes in arbitrary dimension.

Non-anticommutative N=2 super-Yang-Mills theory with singlet deformation

We consider a non-anticommutative N=2 superspace with an SU(2) singlet and Lorentz scalar deformation parameter, $\{θ^{αi},θ^{βj}\}_\star = -2iP \e^{αβ}\e^{ij}$. We exploit this unique feature of the N=2 case to construct a deformation of the non-Abelian super-Yang-Mills theory which preserves the full N=2 supersymmetry together with the SU(2) R symmetry and Lorentz invariance. The resulting action describes a kind of "heterotic special geometry" with antiholomorphic prepotential $\bar f(\barϕ) = Tr (\barϕ^2 (1+P\barϕ)^{-2})$.

A note on the perturbative properties of BPS operators

We discuss the perturbative behavior of the 1/2 BPS operators in N=2 SCFT on the example of two very similar quadrilinear composite operators made out of hypermultiplets. An explicit one-loop computation shows that one of them is protected while the other acquires an anomalous dimension. Although both operators are superconformal primaries in the free case, the quantum corrections make the latter become a 1/2 BPS descendant of the Konishi multiplet, while the former remains primary. The comparative study of these two operators at higher orders may be helpful in understanding the quantum properties of the Konishi multiplet.

Conformally coupled supermultiplets in four and five dimensions

We obtain by superfield methods the exceptional representations of the OSp(2N/4,R) and SU(2,2/1) superalgebras which extend to supersingletons of SU(2,2/2N) and F(4), respectively. These representations describe superconformally coupled multiplets and appear in three- and four-dimensional superconformal field theories which are holographic descriptions of certain anti-de Sitter supergravities.

Universal properties of superconformal OPEs for 1/2 BPS operators in $3\leq D \leq 6$

We give a general analysis of OPEs of 1/2 BPS superfield operators for the $D=3,4,5,6$ superconformal algebras OSp(8/4,R), PSU(2,2), F${}_4$ and OSp($8^*/4$) which underlie maximal AdS supergravity in $4\leq D+1\leq 7$. \\ The corresponding three-point functions can be formally factorized in a way similar to the decomposition of a generic superconformal UIR into a product of supersingletons. This allows for a simple derivation of branching rules for primary superfields. The operators of protected conformal dimension which may appear in the OPE are classified and are shown to be either 1/2 or 1/4 BPS, or semishort. As an application, we discuss the "non-renormalization" of extremal $n$-point correlators.

Partial non-renormalisation of the stress-tensor four-point function in N=4 SYM and AdS/CFT

We show that, although the correlator of four stress-tensor multiplets in N=4 SYM is known to have radiative corrections, certain linear combinations of its components are protected from perturbative renormalisation and remain at their free-field values. This result is valid for weak as well as for strong coupling and for any gauge group. Our argument uses Intriligator's insertion formula, and includes a proof that the possible contact term contributions cannot change the form of the amplitudes. Combining this new non-renormalisation theorem with Maldacena's conjecture allows us to make a prediction for the structure of the corresponding correlator in AdS supergravity. This is verified by first considerably simplifying the strong coupling expression obtained by recent supergravity calculations, and then showing that it does indeed exhibit the expected structure.

Representations of superconformal algebras in the AdS_7/4/CFT_6/3 correspondence

We perform a general analysis of representations of the superconformal algebras OSp(8/4,R) and OSp(8*/2N) in harmonic superspace. We present a construction of their highest-weight UIR's by multiplication of the different types of massless conformal superfields ("supersingletons"). In particular, all "short multiplets" are classified. Representations undergoing shortening have "protected dimension" and may correspond to BPS states in the dual supergravity theory in anti-de Sitter space. These results are relevant for the classification of multitrace operators in boundary conformally invariant theories as well as for the classification of AdS black holes preserving different fractions of supersymmetry.

We present a construction of their UIR's by multiplication of the different types of massless superfields ("supersingletons"). Particular attention is paid to the so-called "short multiplets". Representations of (1,0) and (2,0) superconformal algebras in six dimensions: massless and short superfields

We construct unitary representations of (1,0) and (2,0) superconformal algebras in six dimensions by using superfields defined on harmonic superspaces with coset manifolds USp(2n)/[U(1)]^n, n=1,2. In the spirit of the AdS_7/CFT_6 correspondence massless conformal fields correspond to "supersingletons" in AdS_7. By tensoring them we produce all short representations corresponding to 1/2 and 1/4 BPS anti-de Sitter bulk states of which "massless bulk" representations are particular cases.

Conformal primaries of OSp(8/4,R) and BPS states in AdS4

We derive short UIR's of the OSp(8/4,R) superalgebra of 3d N=8 superconformal field theories by the requirement that the highest weight states are annihilated by a subset of the super-Poincare odd generators. We then find a superfield realization of these BPS saturated UIR's as "composite operators" of the two basic ultrashort "supersingleton" multiplets. These representations are the AdS4 analogue of BPS states preserving different fractions of supersymmetry and are therefore suitable to classify perturbative and non-perturbative excitations of M-theory compactifications.
