NCR vs. Passive/Active RIS: How Much NCR Amplification is Required to Beat RIS?

This paper investigates the fundamental tradeoff between reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) and network-controlled repeaters (NCRs) in terms of achievable signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Considering an uplink system with a multi-antenna base station (BS) and a single-antenna user equipment (UE), we derive closed-form SNR expressions for passive RIS-, active RIS-, and NCR-assisted communication under line-of-sight propagation between the BS-RIS/NCR and RIS/NCR-UE. Both narrowband and wideband transmissions are analyzed, with and without the presence of a direct BS--UE link. Our analysis reveals a key structural difference: while the SNR achieved with RISs grows unboundedly with the number of RIS elements, the SNR provided by an NCR is fundamentally limited by the UE--repeater channel due to noise amplification. Nevertheless, we show that NCRs can outperform both passive and active RISs when deployed close to the UE, provided that sufficient amplification is available. Numerical results based on realistic path loss models quantify the amplification levels required for NCRs to outperform RISs across different deployment geometries and system dimensions. These findings provide clear design guidelines for the practical integration of RISs and NCRs in future wireless networks.

Physics-Informed Spatial-Temporal Transformer for Terahertz Near-Field Beam Tracking

Terahertz (THz) ultra-massive multiple-input multiple-output (UM-MIMO) promises ultra-high throughput, while its highly directional beams demand rapid and accurate beam tracking driven by precise user-state estimation. Moreover, large array apertures at high frequencies induce near-field propagation effects, where far-field modeling becomes inaccurate and near-field parametric channel estimation is costly. Bypassing near-field codebook, PAST-TT is proposed to bridge near-field tracking with low-overhead far-field codebook probing by exploiting parallax, amplified by widely spaced subarrays. With comb-type frequency-division multiplexing pilots, each subarray yields frequency-affine phase signatures whose frequency and temporal increments encode propagation delay and its variation between frames. Building on these signatures, a Parallax-Aware Spatial Transformer (PAST) compresses them and outputs per-frame position estimates with token reliability to downweight bad frames, regularized by a physics-in-the-loop consistency loss. A causal Temporal Transformer (TT) then performs reliability-aware filtering and prediction over a sliding window to initialize the beam of the next frame. Acting on short token sequences, PAST-TT avoids a monolithic spatial-temporal network over raw pilots, which keeps the model lightweight with a critical path latency of 0.61 ms. Simulations show that at 15 dB signal-to-noise ratio, PAST achieves 7.81 mm distance RMSE and 0.0588° angle RMSE. Even with a bad-frame rate of 0.1, TT reduces the distance and angle prediction RMSE by 23.1% and 32.8% compared with the best competing tracker.

Airy Beam Engineering in Near-field Communications: A Tractable Closed-Form Analysis in the Terahertz Band

Terahertz (THz) communication can offer terabit-per-second rates in future wireless systems, thanks to the ultra-wide bandwidths, but require large antenna arrays. As antenna apertures expand and we enter the near-field scenarios, the conventional binary classification of communication links as either Line-of-Sight (LoS) or Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) becomes insufficient. Instead, quasi-LoS scenarios, where the LoS path is partially obstructed, are increasingly prevalent, posing significant challenges for traditional LoS focusing and steering beams. The Airy beam serves as a promising alternative, utilizing its non-diffracting and curved trajectory properties to mitigate such blockages. However, while existing electromagnetics literature primarily explores their physical patterns without practical generation schemes, recent communication-oriented designs predominantly rely on learning-based frameworks lacking interpretable closed-form solutions. To address this issue, this paper investigates a closed-form Airy beam design to efficiently synthesize Airy beam phase profiles based on the positions of the transceivers and obstacles. Specifically, rigorous analytical derivations of the electric field and trajectory are presented to establish a deterministic closed-form design for ULA Airy beamforming. Leveraging 3D wavefront separability, this framework is extended to uniform planar arrays (UPAs) with two operation modes: the hybrid focusing-Airy mode and the dual Airy mode. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of our derived trajectory equations and demonstrate that the proposed closed-form design significantly outperforms conventional beamforming schemes in quasi-LoS scenarios. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves performance comparable to exhaustive numerical searches with low computational complexity and enhanced physical interpretability.

Reciprocal Beyond-Diagonal Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface (BD-RIS): Scattering Matrix Design via Manifold Optimization

Beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (BD-RISs) are emerging as a transformative technology in wireless communications, enabling enhanced performance and quality of service (QoS) of wireless systems in harsh urban environments due to their relatively low cost and advanced signal processing capabilities. Generally, BD-RIS systems are employed to improve robustness, increase achievable rates, and enhance energy efficiency of wireless systems in both direct and indirect ways. The direct way is to produce a favorable propagation environment via the design of optimized scattering matrices, while the indirect way is to reap additional improvements via the design of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) beamformers that further exploit the latter "engineered" medium. In this article, the problem of sum-rate maximization via BD-RIS is examined, with a focus on feasibility, namely low-complexity physical implementation, by enforcing reciprocity in the BD-RIS design in a manner that adheres to the geometry of the manifold of symmetric matrices. To that end, the sum-rate objective is transformed into a quadratic function via fractional programming (FP), augmented via the also quadratic reciprocity constraint in the form of a regularization term, while the unitary constraint is dealt with via a manifold optimization framework. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in outperforming current state-of-the-art (SotA) approaches in terms of sum-rate maximization.

Quantized Precoding for Maximizing Sum Rate in MU-MIMO Systems with Constrained Fronthaul

This paper studies a downlink multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) system, where the precoding matrix is computed at a baseband unit (BBU) and then transmitted to the remote antenna array over a limited-capacity digital fronthaul. The limited bit resolution of the fronthaul introduces quantization effects that are explicitly modeled. We propose a novel sum rate maximization framework that directly incorporates the quantizer's constraints into the precoding design. The resulting maximization problem, a non-convex mixed-integer program, is addressed using a new iterative algorithm inspired by the weighted minimum mean square error (WMMSE) methodology. The precoding optimization subproblem is reformulated as an integer least-squares problem and solved using a novel sphere decoding (SD) algorithm. Additionally, a low-complexity expectation propagation (EP)-based method is introduced to enable the practical implementation of quantized precoding in MU-massive MIMO (MU-mMIMO) systems. Furthermore, numerical evaluations demonstrate that the proposed precoding schemes outperform conventional approaches that optimize infinite-resolution precoding followed by element-wise quantization. We also propose a heuristic quantization-aware precoding method with comparable complexity to the baseline but superior performance. In particular, the EP-based approach offers near-optimal performance with substantial complexity reduction, making it well-suited for real-time MU-mMIMO applications.

Analyzing URA Geometry for Enhanced Near-Field Beamfocusing and Spatial Degrees of Freedom

With the deployment of large antenna arrays at high-frequency bands, future wireless communication systems are likely to operate in the radiative near-field. Unlike far-field beam steering, near-field beams can be focused on a spatial region with a finite depth, enabling spatial multiplexing in the range dimension. Moreover, in the line-of-sight MIMO near-field, multiple spatial degrees of freedom (DoF) are accessible, akin to a scattering- rich environment. In this paper, we derive the beamdepth for a generalized uniform rectangular array (URA) and investigate how the array geometry influences near-field beamdepth and its limits. We define the effective beamfocusing Rayleigh distance (EBRD), to present a near-field boundary with respect to beamfocusing and spatial multiplexing gains for the generalized URA. Our results demonstrate that under a fixed element count constraint, the array geometry has a strong impact on beamdepth, whereas this effect diminishes under a fixed aperture length constraint. Moreover, compared to uniform square arrays, elongated configurations such as uniform linear arrays (ULAs) yield narrower beamdepth and extend the effective near-field region defined by the EBRD. Building on these insights, we design a polar codebook for compressed-sensing-based channel estimation that leverages our findings. Simulation results show that the proposed polar codebook achieves a 2 dB NMSE improvement over state-of-the-art methods. Additionally, we present an analytical expression to quantify the effective spatial DoF in the near-field, revealing that they are also constrained by the EBRD. Notably, the maximum spatial DoF is achieved with a ULA configuration, outperforming a square URA in this regard.

Experimental Validation of Reflective Near-Field Beamfocusing using a b-bit RIS

This paper presents the first experimental validation of reflective near-field beamfocusing using a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). While beamfocusing has been theoretically established as a key feature of large-aperture RISs, its practical realization has remained unexplored. We derive new analytical expressions for the array gain achieved with a $b$-bit RIS in near-field line-of-sight scenarios, characterizing both the finite depth and angular width of the focal region. The theoretical results are validated through a series of measurements in an indoor office environment at 28 GHz using a one-bit 1024-element RIS. The experiments confirm that beamfocusing can be dynamically achieved and accurately predicted by the proposed simplified analytical model, despite the presence of hardware imperfections and multipath propagation. These findings demonstrate that near-field beamfocusing is a robust and practically viable feature of RIS-assisted wireless communications.

Cell-Free Massive MIMO with Hardware-Impaired Wireless Fronthaul

Cell-free massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) enhances spectral and energy efficiency compared to conventional cellular networks by enabling joint transmission and reception across a large number of distributed access points (APs). Since these APs are envisioned to be low-cost and densely deployed, hardware impairments, stemming from non-ideal radio-frequency (RF) chains, are unavoidable. While existing studies primarily address hardware impairments on the access side, the impact of hardware impairments on the wireless fronthaul link has remained largely unexplored. In this work, we fill this important gap by introducing a novel amplify-and-forward (AF) based wireless fronthauling scheme tailored for cell-free massive MIMO. Focusing on the uplink, we develop an analytical framework that jointly models the hardware impairments at both the APs and the fronthaul transceivers, derives the resulting end-to-end distorted signal expression, and quantifies the individual contribution of each impairment to the spectral efficiency. Furthermore, we design distortion-aware linear combiners that optimally mitigate these effects. Numerical results demonstrate significant performance gains from distortion-aware processing and illustrate the potential of the proposed AF fronthauling scheme as a cost-effective enabler for future cell-free architectures.

Statistics Approximation-Enabled Distributed Beamforming for Cell-Free Massive MIMO

We study a distributed beamforming approach for cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output networks, referred to as Global Statistics & Local Instantaneous information-based minimum mean-square error (GSLI-MMSE). The scenario with multi-antenna access points (APs) is considered over three different channel models: correlated Rician fading with fixed or random line-of-sight (LoS) phase-shifts, and correlated Rayleigh fading. With the aid of matrix inversion derivations, we can construct the conventional MMSE combining from the perspective of each AP, where global instantaneous information is involved. Then, for an arbitrary AP, we apply the statistics approximation methodology to approximate instantaneous terms related to other APs by channel statistics to construct the distributed combining scheme at each AP with local instantaneous information and global statistics. With the aid of uplink-downlink duality, we derive the respective GSLI-MMSE precoding schemes. Numerical results showcase that the proposed GSLI-MMSE scheme demonstrates performance comparable to the optimal centralized MMSE scheme, under the stable LoS conditions, e.g., with static users having Rician fading with a fixed LoS path.

Cell-Free MIMO in Space: Cooperative Satellite Transmission with Multi-Antenna Ground Users

This paper develops a multi-user downlink communication framework for distributed low Earth orbit satellite networks serving ground users equipped with multiple antennas. Building upon the concept of cell-free multiple-input multiple-output in terrestrial networks, we propose a coordinated transmission scheme where multiple satellites jointly transmit spatially multiplexed data streams to each user. Using a new approximate achievable rate expression, we formulate a sum rate maximization problem under per-satellite and per-antenna power constraints and use the classical equivalence between sum rate maximization and mean square error minimization to optimize the satellites' precoding matrices using statistical channel state information. We numerically examine the performance of the proposed scheme in different settings and validate its effectiveness by comparing it against traditional precoding designs.

Maximum A Posteriori Probability Channel Tracking with an Intelligent Transmitting Surface

This paper considers an intelligent transmitting surface (ITS) integrated into a base station and develops a low-overhead maximum a posteriori (MAP) probability channel tracking method for the dominant line-of-sight link between the ITS and the user equipment. We cast the per-block channel as a three-parameter model consisting of the channel amplitude, channel phase, and angle-of-arrival at the ITS. We exploit temporal correlation by updating the priors using the estimates from the previous block. Using only two pilots per coherence block alongside a targeted beam alignment strategy, the proposed method achieves precise channel tracking and attains spectral efficiency close to that achievable under perfect channel knowledge.

From Antenna Abundance to Antenna Intelligence in 6G Gigantic MIMO Systems

Current cellular systems achieve high spectral efficiency through Massive MIMO, which leverages an abundance of antennas to create favorable propagation conditions for multiuser spatial multiplexing. Looking towards future networks, the extrapolation of this paradigm leads to systems with many hundreds of antennas per base station, raising concerns regarding hardware complexity, cost, and power consumption. This article suggests more intelligent array designs that reduce the need for excessive antenna numbers. We revisit classical uniform array design principles and explain how their uniform spatial sampling leads to unnecessary redundancies in practical deployment scenarios. By exploiting non-uniform sparse arrays with site-specific antenna placements -- based on either pre-optimized irregular arrays or real-time movable antennas -- we demonstrate how superior multiuser MIMO performance can be achieved with far fewer antennas. These principles are inspired by previous works on wireless localization. We explain and demonstrate numerically how these concepts can be adapted for communications to improve the average sum rate and similar metrics. The results suggest a paradigm shift for future antenna array design, where antenna intelligence replaces sheer antenna count. This opens new opportunities for efficient, adaptable, and sustainable Gigantic MIMO systems.

Joint Impact of ADC and Fronthaul Quantization in Cell-Free Massive MIMO-OFDM Uplink

In the uplink of a cell-free massive MIMO system, quantization affects performance in two key domains: the time-domain distortion introduced by finite-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) at the access points (APs), and the fronthaul quantization of signals sent to the central processing unit (CPU). Although quantizing twice may seem redundant, the ADC quantization in orthogonal frequency-division duplex (OFDM) systems appears in the time domain, and one must then convert to the frequency domain, where quantization can be applied only to the signals at active subcarriers. This reduces fronthaul load and avoids unnecessary distortion, since the ADC output spans all OFDM samples while only a subset of subcarriers carries useful information. While both quantization effects have been extensively studied in narrowband systems, their joint impact in practical wideband OFDM-based cell-free massive MIMO remains largely unexplored. This paper addresses the gap by modeling the joint distortion and proposing a fronthaul strategy in which each AP processes the received signal to reduce quantization artifacts before transmission. We develop an efficient estimation algorithm that reconstructs the unquantized time-domain signal prior to fronthaul transmission and evaluate its effectiveness. The proposed design offers new insights for implementing efficient, quantization-aware uplink transmission in wideband cell-free architectures.

Feasibility Study Regarding Self-sustainable Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces

Without requiring operational costs such as cabling and powering while maintaining reconfigurable phase-shift capability, self-sustainable reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (ssRISs) can be deployed in locations inaccessible to conventional relays or base stations, offering a novel approach to enhance wireless coverage. This study assesses the feasibility of ssRIS deployment by analyzing two harvest-and-reflect (HaR) schemes: element-splitting (ES) and time-splitting (TS). We examine how element requirements scale with key system parameters, transmit power, data rate demands, and outage constraints under both line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) ssRIS-to-user equipment (UE) channels. Analytical and numerical results reveal distinct feasibility characteristics. The TS scheme demonstrates better channel hardening gain, maintaining stable element requirements across varying outage margins, making it advantageous for indoor deployments with favorable harvesting conditions and moderate data rates. However, TS exhibits an element requirement that exponentially scales to harvesting difficulty and data rate. Conversely, the ES scheme shows only linear growth with harvesting difficulty, providing better feasibility under challenging outdoor scenarios. These findings establish that TS excels in benign environments, prioritizing reliability, while ES is preferable for demanding conditions requiring operational robustness.

Precoding Matrix Indicator in the 5G NR Protocol: A Tutorial on 3GPP Beamforming Codebooks

This paper bridges this critical gap by providing a systematic examination of the beamforming codebook technology, i.e., precoding matrix indicator (PMI), in the 5G NR from theoretical, standardization, and implementation perspectives. We begin by introducing the background of beamforming in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems and the signaling procedures for codebook-based beamforming in practical 5G systems. Then, we establish the fundamentals of regular codebooks and port-selection codebooks in 3GPP standards. Next, we provide rigorous technical analysis of 3GPP codebook evolution spanning Releases 15-18, with particular focus on: 1) We elucidate the core principles underlying codebook design, 2) provide clear physical interpretations for each symbolic variable in the codebook formulas, summarized in tabular form, and 3) offer intuitive visual illustrations to explain how codebook parameters convey information. These essential pedagogical elements are almost entirely absent in the often-obscure standardization documents. Through mathematical modeling, performance benchmarking, feedback comparisons, and scenario-dependent applicability analysis, we provide researchers and engineers with a unified understanding of beamforming codebooks in real-world systems. Furthermore, we identify future directions and other beamforming scenarios for ongoing research and development efforts. This work serves as both an informative tutorial and a guidance for future research, facilitating more effective collaboration between academia and industry in advancing wireless communication technologies.

Multi-Antenna Users in Cell-Free Massive MIMO: Stream Allocation and Necessity of Downlink Pilots

We consider a cell-free massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system with multiple antennas on the users and access points (APs). In previous works, the downlink spectral efficiency (SE) has been evaluated using the hardening bound that requires no downlink pilots. This approach works well for single-antenna users. In this paper, we show that much higher SEs can be achieved if downlink pilots are sent when having multi-antenna users. The reason is that the effective channel matrix does not harden. We propose a pilot-based downlink estimation scheme, derive a new SE expression, and show numerically that it yields substantially higher performance when having correlated Rayleigh fading channels. In cases with multi-antenna users, the APs can either transmit the same or different data streams. The latter reduces the fronthaul signaling but comes with a SE loss. We propose precoding and combining schemes for these cases and consider whether channel knowledge is shared between the APs. Finally, we show numerically how the number of users, APs, and the number of antennas on users and APs affect the SE.

Near-Field Beamfocusing, Localization, and Channel Estimation with Modular Linear Arrays

This paper investigates how near-field beamfocusing can be achieved using a modular linear array (MLA), composed of multiple widely spaced uniform linear arrays (ULAs). The MLA architecture extends the aperture length of a standard ULA without adding additional antennas, thereby enabling near-field beamfocusing without increasing processing complexity. Unlike conventional far-field beamforming, near-field beamfocusing enables simultaneous data transmission to multiple users at different distances in the same angular interval, offering significant multiplexing gains. We present a detailed mathematical analysis of the beamwidth and beamdepth achievable with the MLA and show that by appropriately selecting the number of antennas in each constituent ULA, ideal near-field beamfocusing can be realized. In addition, we propose a computationally efficient localization method that fuses estimates from each ULA, enabling efficient parametric channel estimation. Simulation results confirm the accuracy of the analytical expressions and that MLAs achieve near-field beamfocusing with a limited number of antennas, making them a promising solution for next-generation wireless systems.
