Defining the $T \overline{T}$ Deformation on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$

We show that the $T \overline{T}$ deformation of two-dimensional quantum field theory on $\mathrm{AdS}_2$ is well-defined and solvable at the quantum level. Flow equations for the energy spectrum and partition function are derived in analogy with the flat space case. As a non-trivial check, we perturbatively compute the deformed energy spectrum for the case of a free scalar field. We analyze the high energy density of states of the deformed theory and find a Hagedorn growth of states.

M-theory Superstrata and the MSW String

The low-energy description of wrapped M5 branes in compactifications of M-theory on a Calabi-Yau threefold times a circle is given by a conformal field theory studied by Maldacena, Strominger and Witten and known as the MSW CFT. Taking the threefold to be T$^6$ or K3xT$^2$, we construct a map between a sub-sector of this CFT and a sub-sector of the D1-D5 CFT. We demonstrate this map by considering a set of D1-D5 CFT states that have smooth horizonless bulk duals, and explicitly constructing the supergravity solutions dual to the corresponding states of the MSW CFT. We thus obtain the largest known class of solutions dual to MSW CFT microstates, and demonstrate that five-dimensional ungauged supergravity admits much larger families of smooth horizonless solutions than previously known.

Higgsed Chromo-Natural Inflation

We demonstrate that Chromo-Natural Inflation can be made consistent with observational data if the SU(2) gauge symmetry is spontaneously broken. Working in the Stueckelberg limit, we show that isocurvature is negligible, and the resulting adiabatic fluctuations can match current observational constraints. Observable levels of chirally-polarized gravitational radiation ($r\sim 10^{-3}$) can be produced while the evolution of all background fields is sub-Planckian. The gravitational wave spectrum is amplified via linear mixing with the gauge field fluctuations, and its amplitude is not simply set by the Hubble rate during inflation. This allows observable gravitational waves to be produced for an inflationary energy scale below the GUT scale. The tilt of the resulting gravitational wave spectrum can be either blue or red.

Momentum Fractionation on Superstrata

Superstrata are bound states in string theory that carry D1, D5, and momentum charges, and whose supergravity descriptions are parameterized by arbitrary functions of (at least) two variables. In the D1-D5 CFT, typical three-charge states reside in high-degree twisted sectors, and their momentum charge is carried by modes that individually have fractional momentum. Understanding this momentum fractionation holographically is crucial for understanding typical black-hole microstates in this system. We use solution-generating techniques to add momentum to a multi-wound supertube and thereby construct the first examples of asymptotically-flat superstrata. The resulting supergravity solutions are horizonless and smooth up to well-understood orbifold singularities. Upon taking the AdS3 decoupling limit, our solutions are dual to CFT states with momentum fractionation. We give a precise proposal for these dual CFT states. Our construction establishes the very nontrivial fact that large classes of CFT states with momentum fractionation can be realized in the bulk as smooth horizonless supergravity solutions.

Perturbations in Chromo-Natural Inflation

Chromo-Natural Inflation is the first worked example of a model of inflation in which slow-roll inflation is achieved by "magnetic drift" as opposed to Hubble friction. In this work, we give an account of the perturbations at linear order in this model. Our analysis uncovers two novel phenomena. First, the amplitude of scalar curvature perturbations is not directly tied to the shape of the inflationary potential. This allows the theory to violate naïve formulations of the Lyth bound. Second, the tensor sector of the theory is significantly altered from the usual case: the non-Abelian gauge field perturbations have a tensor degree of freedom. One chirality of the this tensor can be exponentially enhanced by a temporary instability near horizon crossing; this chiral instability exists because of the classical gauge field background, which violates parity. These tensor fluctuations of the gauge field also couple to gravitational waves at linear order in perturbation theory and source a chiral spectrum of gravitational waves. This spectrum can be exponentially enhanced over the usual inflationary spectrum due to the instability in the gauge sector. These new features cause the theory in its present form to be in significant tension with current observational data. This is because the new scalar physics leads to a significant reddening of the spectral tilt in the same region of parameter space where the exponential enhancement of the gravitational wave amplitude is small enough to satisfy current constraints on the tensor-to-scalar index. Hence, the model either predicts a spectral tilt that is too red, or it overproduces gravitational waves, or both.

Gauge Fields and Inflation: Chiral Gravitational Waves, Fluctuations and the Lyth Bound

Models of inflation involving non-Abelian gauge field backgrounds can produce gravitational waves at an observable level with a preferred handedness. This asymmetry comes about because the non-Abelian background generates parity-violation in the action for perturbations. In the specific model we study, Chromo-Natural Inflation, these gravitational waves can be produced at observable levels even when no field makes a super-Planckian field excursion, thus evading a common formulation of the Lyth bound. Unfortunately, when considered in concert with the scalar fluctuations, this chiral enhancement of the gravitational waves makes the model observationally inviable.

Chern-Simons EM-flation

We propose a new, generic mechanism of inflation mediated by a balance between potential forces and a Chern-Simons interaction. Such quasi-topological interactions are ubiquitous in string theory. In the minisuperspace approximation, their effect on the dynamics can be mapped onto the problem of a charged particle in an electromagnetic field together with an external potential; slow roll arises when the motion is dominated by the analogue of `magnetic drift'. This mechanism is robust against radiative corrections. We suggest a possible experimental signature which, if observed, might be considered strong evidence for string theory.

Monopole--Instantons in M2-brane Theories

We study monopole-instantons in M2-brane theories, focussing on the ABJM class of Chern-Simons gauge theories coupled to matter. We calculate calculate explicitly the 8-fermion term in the effective action induced by these monopole-instantons, and discuss their role in resolving a classical singularity in the moduli space. The results are compared with monopole-instantons in N=8 3d SYM and D-brane theories, as well the dual supergravity description as a membrane scattering process.

Scattered Results in 2D String Theory

The nonperturbative $1\to N$ tachyon scattering amplitude in 2D type 0A string theory is computed. The probability that $N$ particles are produced is a monotonically decreasing function of $N$ whenever $N$ is large enough that statistical methods apply. The results are compared with expectations from black hole thermodynamics.

An Index for 2D field theories with large N=4 superconformal symmetry

We consider families of theories with large N=4 superconformal symmetry. We define an index generalizing the elliptic genus of theories with N=2 symmetry. In contrast to the N=2 case, the new index constrains part of the non-BPS spectrum. Motivated by aspects of the AdS/CFT correspondence we study the index in the examples of symmetric product theories. We give a physical interpretation of the Hecke operators which appear in the expressions for partition functions of such theories. Finally, we compute the index for a nontrivial example of a symmetric product theory.

The Search for a Holographic Dual to AdS(3)xS(3)xS(3)xS(1)

The problem of finding a holographic CFT dual to string theory on AdS(3)xS(3)xS(3)xS(1) is examined in depth. This background supports a large N=4 superconformal symmetry. While in some respects similar to the familiar small N=4 systems on AdS(3)xS(3)xK3 and AdS(3)xS(3)xT4, there are important qualitative differences. Using an analog of the elliptic genus for large N=4 theories we rule out all extant proposals -- in their simplest form -- for a holographic duality to supergravity at generic values of the background fluxes. Modifications of these extant proposals and other possible duals are discussed.

Chern-Simons Gauge Theory and the AdS(3)/CFT(2) Correspondence

The bulk partition function of pure Chern-Simons theory on a three-manifold is a state in the space of conformal blocks of the dual boundary RCFT, and therefore transforms non-trivially under the boundary modular group. In contrast the bulk partition function of AdS(3) string theory is the modular-invariant partition function of the dual CFT on the boundary. This is a puzzle because AdS(3) string theory formally reduces to pure Chern-Simons theory at long distances. We study this puzzle in the context of massive Chern-Simons theory. We show that the puzzle is resolved in this context by the appearance of a chiral "spectator boson" in the boundary CFT which restores modular invariance. It couples to the conformal metric but not to the gauge field on the boundary. Consequently, we find a generalization of the standard Chern-Simons/RCFT correspondence involving "nonholomorphic conformal blocks" and nonrational boundary CFTs. These generalizations appear in the long-distance limit of AdS(3) string theory, where the role of the spectator boson is played by other degrees of freedom in the theory.

String Theory on AdS Orbifolds

We consider worldsheet string theory on $Z_N$ orbifolds of $AdS_3$ associated with conical singularities. If the orbifold action includes a similar twist of $S^3$, supersymmetry is preserved, and there is a moduli space of vacua arising from blowup modes of the orbifold singularity. We exhibit the spectrum, including the properties of twisted sectors and states obtained by fractional spectral flow. A subalgebra of the spacetime superconformal symmetry remains intact after the $Z_N$ quotient, and serves as the spacetime symmetry algebra of the orbifold.

Currents and Moduli in the (4,0) theory

We consider black strings in five dimensions and their description as a (4,0) CFT. The CFT moduli space is described explicitly, including its subtle global structure. BPS conditions and global symmetries determine the spectrum of charged excitations, leading to an entropy formula for near-extreme black holes in four dimensions with arbitrary charge vector. In the BPS limit, this formula reduces to the quartic E(7,7) invariant. The prospects for a description of the (4,0) theory as a solvable CFT are explored.

U(1) Charges and Moduli in the D1-D5 System

The decoupling limit of the D1-D5 system compactified on T^4\times S^1 has a rich spectrum of U(1) charged excitations. Even though these states are not BPS in the limit, BPS considerations determine the mass and the semiclassical entropy for a given charge vector. The dependence of the mass formula on the compactification moduli situates the symmetric orbifold Sym^N(T^4) x T^4 conformal field theory in the moduli space. A detailed analysis of the global identifications of the moduli space yields a picture of multiple weak-coupling limits - one for each factorization of N into D1 and D5 charges d1 and d5=N/d1 - joined through regions of strong coupling in the CFT moduli space.

A note on the thermodynamics of `little string' theory

We study the thermodynamics of the D1-D5 system on a five-torus, focussing on the roles of different scales. One can take a decoupling limit such that the tension of the `little string' inside the fivebrane remains finite and the physics is 5+1 dimensional. The dual black geometry exhibits a boosted Hagedorn phase, as well as a phase describing a boosted fivebrane gas. The dependence on the boost yields information about the nature of the fivebrane modes and their interactions. In particular, the form of the equations of state suggests a description in terms of $k=Q_1 Q_5$ degrees of freedom, which may lead to an explanation of the $(Q_5)^3$ growth in the fivebrane density of states below the Hagedorn transition.

Black Holes and the SYM Phase Diagram

Making combined use of the Matrix and Maldacena conjectures, the relation between various thermodynamic transitions in super Yang-Mills (SYM) and supergravity is clarified. The thermodynamic phase diagram of an object in DLCQ M-theory in four and five non-compact space dimensions is constructed; matrix strings, matrix black holes, and black $p$-branes are among the various phases. Critical manifolds are characterized by the principles of correspondence and longitudinal localization, and a triple point is identified. The microscopic dynamics of the Matrix string near two of the transitions is studied; we identify a signature of black hole formation from SYM physics.
