On the quadratic normality and the triple curve of three dimensional subvarieties of ${\mathbb P}^5$

A well-known conjecture asserts that smooth threefolds $X\subset\{\mathbb P}^5$ are quadratically normal with the only exception of the Palatini scroll. As a corollary of a more general statement we obtain the following result, which is related to the previous conjecture: If $X\subset\{\mathbb P}^5$ is not quadratically normal, then its triple curve is reducible. Similar results are also given for higher dimensional varieties.

Congruences of lines in $\mathbb{P}^5$, quadratic normality, and completely exceptional Monge-Ampère equations

The existence is proved of two new families of locally Cohen-Macaulay sextic threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^5$, which are not quadratically normal. These threefolds arise naturally in the realm of first order congruences of lines as focal loci and in the study of the completely exceptional Monge-Ampère equations. One of these families comes from a smooth congruence of multidegree $(1,3,3)$ which is a smooth Fano fourfold of index two and genus 9.

Linear Congruences and hyperbolic Systems of conservation Laws

S. I. Agafonov and E. V. Ferapontov have introduced a construction that allows naturally associating to a system of partial differential equations of conservation laws a congruence of lines in an appropriate projective space. In particular hyperbolic systems of Temple class correspond to congruences of lines that place in planar pencils of lines. The language of Algebraic Geometry turns out to be very natural in the study of these systems. In this article, after recalling the definition and the basic facts on congruences of lines, Agafonov-Ferapontov's construction is illustrated and some results of classification for Temple systems are presented. In particular, we obtain the classification of linear congruences in $\mathbb{P}^5$, which correspond to some classes of $T$-systems in 4 variables.

Some remarks on varieties with degenerate Gauss image

We consider projective varieties with degenerate Gauss image whose focal hypersurfaces are non-reduced schemes. Examples of this situation are provided by the secant varieties of Severi and Scorza varieties. The Severi varieties are moreover characterized by a uniqueness property.

On the Hilbert scheme of Palatini threefolds

We study the Hilbert scheme of Palatini threefolds X in P^5. We prove that such a scheme has an irreducible component containing X which is birational to the Grassmannian G(3,14) and we determine the exceptional locus of the birational map.

On quadrisecant lines of threefolds in P^5

We study smooth threefolds of the projective space of dimension 5 whose quadrisecant lines don't fill up the space. We give a complete classification of those threefolds X whose only quadrisecant lines are the lines contained in X. Then we prove that, if X admits "true" quadrisecant lines, but they don't fill up the space, then either X is contained in a cubic hypersurface, or it contains a family of dimension at least two of plane curves of degree at least four.

On projective varieties of dimension n+k covered by k-spaces

We study families of linear spaces in projective space whose union is a proper subvariety X of the expected dimension. We establish relations between configurations of focal points and existence or non-existence of a fixed tangent space to X along a general element of the family. We apply our results to the classification of ruled 3-dimensional varieties.

On the construction of some Buchsbaum varieties and the Hilbert scheme of elliptic scrolls in P^5

We study the degeneracy loci of general bundle morphisms from the direct sum of m copies of the structural sheaf on $P^n$ to $Ω(2)$, also from the point of view of the classical geometrical interpretation of the sections of $Ω(2)$ as linear line complexes. We consider in particular the case of $P^5$ with m=2, 3. For n=5 and m=3 we give an explicit description of the Hilbert scheme H of elliptic normal scrolls in $P^5$, by defining a natural rational map from the Grassmannian G(2,14) to H, which results to be dominant with general fibre of degree four.

On threefolds covered by lines

A classification theorem is given of projective threefolds that are covered by a two-dimensional family of lines, but not by a higher dimensional family.

On smooth rational threefolds of P^5 with rational non-special hyperplane section

It is known that the smooth rational threefolds of P^5 having a rational non-special surface of P^4 as general hyperplane section have degree d=3,... ,7. We study such threefolds X from the point of view of linear systems of surfaces in P^3, looking in each case fosr an explicit description of a birational map from P^3 to X. For d=3,..., 6 we prove that there exists a line L on X such that the projection map of X centered at L is birational; we completely describe the base loci B of the linear systems found in this way and give a description of any such threefold X as a suitable blowing-down of the blowing-up of P^3 along B. If d=7, i.e. if X is a Palatini scroll, we prove that, conversely, a similar projection never exists.

Threefolds in $\Bbb P^5$ with a 3-dimensional family of plane curves

A classification theorem is given of smooth threefolds of $\Bbb P^5$ covered by a family of dimension at least three of plane integral curves of degree $d\geq 2.$ It is shown that for such a threefold $X$ there are two possibilities: \item{(1)} $X$ is any threefold contained in a hyperquadric; \item{(2)} $d\leq 3$ and $X$ is either the Bordiga or the Palatini scroll.

Differential-geometric methods for the lifting problem and linear systems on plane curves

Let $X$ be an integral projective variety of codimension two, degree $d$ and dimension $r$ and $Y$ be its general hyperplane section. The problem of lifting generators of minimal degree $σ$ from the homogeneous ideal of $Y$ to the homogeneous ideal of $X$ is studied. A conjecture is given in terms of $d$, $r$ and $σ$; it is proved in the cases $r=1,2,3$. A description is given of linear systems on smooth plane curves whose dimension is almost maximal.

Projective varieties with many degenerate subvarieties

We study the problem of classifying the irreducible projective varieties $X$ of dimension $n\ge 2$ in $\Bbb P^N$ which contain an algebraic family $\Cal F$ of dimension $h+1$ ($h<n$) of subvarieties $Y$ of dimension $n-h$, each one contained in a $\Bbb P^{N-h-1}$. We prove that one of the following happens: (i) there exists an integer $r$, $r<N-n$ such that $X$ is contained in a variety $V_r$ of dimension at most $N-r$ containing a family of dimension $h+1$ of subvarieties of dimension $N-h-r$, each one contained in a linear space of dimension $N-h-1$; (ii) The degree of $Y$ is bounded by a function of $h$ and $N-n$ (in this case $X$ is called of isolated type). Successively we study some special cases; in particular we give a complete classification of surfaces in $\Bbb P^5$ containing a family of dimension $2$ of curves of $\Bbb P^3$.
