GUT Precursors and Non-Trivial Fixed Points in Higher-Dimensional Gauge Theories

Within the context of traditional logarithmic grand unification at M_GUT = 10^(16) GeV, we show that it is nevertheless possible to observe certain GUT states such as X and Y gauge bosons at lower scales, perhaps even in the TeV range. We refer to such states as ``GUT precursors.'' Such states offer an interesting alternative possibility for new physics at the TeV scale, even when the scale of gauge coupling unification remains high, and suggest that it may be possible to probe GUT physics directly even within the context of high-scale gauge coupling unification. More generally, our results also suggest that it is possible to construct self-consistent ``hybrid'' models containing widely separated energy scales, and give rise to a Kaluza-Klein realization of non-trivial fixed points in higher-dimensional gauge theories. We also discuss how such theories may be deconstructed at high energies.

Multiple seesaw at low energy

A new mechanism for generating neutrino masses without a high-energy mass scale is proposed. The mechanism needs a fundamental mass scale M in the 100-1000 TeV region and a minimal field content beyond the Standard Model one containing a pair of fermion singlets and a pair of weak doublet fermions for each neutrino mass, all of them with a mass of order M. The neutrino mass appears by a multiple seesaw-type tree-level diagram. We provide an explicit model based on supersymmetry and an abelian symmetry which provides the required fermion mass matrix. The mechanism is natural in the context of string theories with a low fundamental scale. Within an explicit example where the abelian symmetry is also responsible for the generation of fermion masses and mixings, we give a hint relating the fermion mass matrices and the weak mixing angle. By assuming the weak-strong couplings unification, one naturally finds $\sin^2 θ_w = 1/4$ at the fundamental scale.

Theory and Phenomenology of Type I strings and M-theory

The physical motivations and the basic construction rules for Type I strings and M-theory compactifications are reviewed in light of the recent developments. The first part contains the basic theoretical ingredients needed for building four-dimensional supersymmetric models, models with broken supersymmetry and for computing low-energy actions and quantum corrections to them. The second part contains some phenomenological applications to brane world scenarios with low values of the string scale and large extra dimensions.

Invisible Axions and Large-Radius Compactifications

We study some of the novel effects that arise when the QCD axion is placed in the ``bulk'' of large extra spacetime dimensions. First, we find that the mass of the axion can become independent of the energy scale associated with the breaking of the Peccei-Quinn symmetry. This implies that the mass of the axion can be adjusted independently of its couplings to ordinary matter, thereby providing a new method of rendering the axion invisible. Second, we discuss the new phenomenon of laboratory axion oscillations (analogous to neutrino oscillations), and show that these oscillations cause laboratory axions to ``decohere'' extremely rapidly as a result of Kaluza-Klein mixing. This decoherence may also be a contributing factor to axion invisibility. Third, we discuss the role of Kaluza-Klein axions in axion-mediated processes and decays, and propose several experimental tests of the higher-dimensional nature of the axion. Finally, we show that under certain circumstances, the presence of an infinite tower of Kaluza-Klein axion modes can significantly accelerate the dissipation of the energy associated with cosmological relic axion oscillations, thereby enabling the Peccei-Quinn symmetry-breaking scale to exceed the usual four-dimensional relic oscillation bounds. Together, these ideas therefore provide new ways of obtaining an ``invisible'' axion within the context of higher-dimensional theories with large-radius compactifications.

Anomaly-Induced Gauge Unification and Brane/Bulk Couplings in Gravity-Localized Theories

It has recently been proposed that gravity-localized compactifications can generate the required gauge hierarchy without the need for hierarchically large extra spacetime dimensions. In this paper, we show that gauge coupling unification arises naturally in such scenarios as a result of the anomaly induced by the rescaling of the wavefunctions of the brane fields. Thus, ``anomaly-induced'' gauge coupling unification can easily explain the apparent low-energy gauge couplings in gravity-localized compactifications. However, we also point out a number of phenomenological difficulties with such compactifications, including an inability to accommodate the GUT scale and the electroweak scale simultaneously. We also show that brane/bulk couplings in this scenario are generically too small to be phenomenologically relevant. Finally, we speculate on possible resolutions to these puzzles.

Light Neutrinos without Heavy Mass Scales: A Higher-Dimensional Seesaw Mechanism

Recent theoretical developments have shown that extra spacetime dimensions can lower the fundamental GUT, Planck, and string scales. However, recent evidence for neutrino oscillations suggests the existence of light non-zero neutrino masses, which in turn suggests the need for a heavy mass scale via the seesaw mechanism. In this paper, we make several observations in this regard. First, we point out that allowing the right-handed neutrino to experience extra spacetime dimensions naturally permits the left-handed neutrino mass to be power-law suppressed relative to the masses of the other fermions. This occurs due to the power-law running of the neutrino Yukawa couplings, and therefore does not require a heavy scale for the right-handed neutrino. Second, we show that a higher-dimensional analogue of the seesaw mechanism may also be capable of generating naturally light neutrino masses without the introduction of a heavy mass scale. Third, we show that such a higher-dimensional seesaw mechanism may even be able to explain neutrino oscillations without neutrino masses, with oscillations induced indirectly via the masses of the Kaluza-Klein states. Fourth, we point out that even when higher-dimensional right-handed neutrinos are given a bare Majorana mass, the higher-dimensional seesaw mechanism surprisingly replaces this mass scale with the radius scale of the extra dimensions. Finally, we also discuss a possible new mechanism for inducing lepton-number violation by shifting the positions of D-branes in Type I string theory.

Cosmological Phase Transitions and Radius Stabilization in Higher Dimensions

Recently there has been considerable interest in field theories and string theories with large extra spacetime dimensions. In this paper, we explore the role of such extra dimensions for cosmology, focusing on cosmological phase transitions in field theory and the Hagedorn transition and radius stabilization in string theory. In each case, we find that significant distinctions emerge from the usual case in which such large extra dimensions are absent. For example, for temperatures larger than the scale of the compactification radii, we show that the critical temperature above which symmetry restoration occurs is reduced relative to the usual four-dimensional case, and consequently cosmological phase transitions in extra dimensions are delayed. Furthermore, we argue that if phase transitions do occur at temperatures larger than the compactification scale, then they cannot be of first-order type. Extending our analysis to string theories with large internal dimensions, we focus on the Hagedorn transition and the new features that arise due to the presence of large internal dimensions. We also consider the role of thermal effects in establishing a potential for the radius of the compactified dimension, and we use this to propose a thermal mechanism for generating and stabilizing a large radius of compactification.

TeV-scale GUTs

In this talk, we summarize our recent proposal for lowering the scale of grand unification to the TeV range though the appearance of extra spacetime dimensions. Particular emphasis is placed on the perturbativity and predictivity of our scenario, as well as its sensitivity to unification-scale effects. Grand Unification at Intermediate Mass Scales through Extra Dimensions

One of the drawbacks of conventional grand unification scenarios has been that the unification scale is too high to permit direct exploration. In this paper, we show that the unification scale can be significantly lowered (perhaps even to the TeV scale) through the appearance of extra spacetime dimensions. Such extra dimensions are a natural consequence of string theories with large-radius compactifications. We show that extra spacetime dimensions naturally lead to gauge coupling unification at intermediate mass scales, and moreover may provide a natural mechanism for explaining the fermion mass hierarchy by permitting the fermion masses to evolve with a power-law dependence on the mass scale. We also show that proton-decay constraints may be satisfied in our scenario due to the higher-dimensional cancellation of proton-decay amplitudes to all orders in perturbation theory. Finally, we extend these results by considering theories without supersymmetry; experimental collider signatures; and embeddings into string theory. The latter also enables us to develop several novel methods of explaining the fermion mass hierarchy via $D$-branes. Our results therefore suggest a new approach towards understanding the physics of grand unification as well as the phenomenology of large-radius string compactifications.

Extra Spacetime Dimensions and Unification

We study the effects of extra spacetime dimensions at intermediate mass scales, as expected in string theories with large-radius compactifications, and focus on the gauge and Yukawa couplings within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We find that extra spacetime dimensions naturally lead to the appearance of grand unified theories at scales substantially below the usual GUT scale. Furthermore, we show that extra spacetime dimensions provide a natural mechanism for explaining the fermion mass hierarchy by permitting the Yukawa couplings to receive power-law corrections. We also discuss how proton-decay constraints may be addressed in this scenario, and suggest that proton-decay amplitudes may be exactly cancelled to all orders in perturbation theory as a result of new Kaluza-Klein selection rules corresponding to the extra spacetime dimensions.

Supersymmetry breaking in M-theory and quantization rules

We analyze in detail supersymmetry breaking by compactification of the fifth dimension in M-theory in the compactification pattern $11d \to 5d \to 4d$ and find that a superpotential is generated for the complex fields coming from $5d$ hypermultiplets, namely the dilaton $S$ and the complex structure moduli. Using general arguments it is shown that these fields are always stabilized such that they don't contribute to supersymmetry breaking, which is completely saturated by the Kähler moduli coming from vector multiplets. It is shown that this mechanism is the strong-coupling analog of the Rohm-Witten quantization of the antisymmetric tensor field strength of string theories. The effect of a gaugino condensate on one of the boundaries is also considered.

Dynamical mass matrices from moduli fields

We review recent work on the structure of the fermion mass matrices in supergravity effective superstrings. They are generally given at low energy by non-trivial functions of the gauge singlet moduli fields. Interesting structures appear in particular if they are homogeneous functions of zero degree in the moduli. In this case we find Yukawa matrices very similar to the ones obtained by imposing a $U(1)$ family symmetry to reproduce the observed hierarchy of masses and mixing angles. The role of the $U(1)$ symmetry is played here by the modular symmetry. The Flavor Changing Neutral Currents effects at the Planck scale coming from the soft terms are identically zero. A dynamical scenario is discussed which allow to generate the observed hierarchies.
