Conformal geometry of timelike curves in the (1+2)-Einstein universe

We study the conformal geometry of timelike curves in the (1+2)-Einstein universe, the conformal compactification of Minkowski 3-space defined as the quotient of the null cone of $\mathbb{R}^{2,3}$ by the action by positive scalar multiplications. The purpose is to describe local and global conformal invariants of timelike curves and to address the question of existence and properties of closed trajectories for the conformal strain functional. Some relations between the conformal geometry of timelike curves and the geometry of knots and links in the 3-sphere are discussed.

The geometric Cauchy problem for the membrane shape equation

We address the geometric Cauchy problem for surfaces associated to the membrane shape equation describing equilibrium configurations of vesicles formed by lipid bilayers. This is the Euler-Lagrange equation of the Canham-Helfrich-Evans elastic curvature energy subject to constraints on the enclosed volume and the surface area. Our approach uses the method of moving frames and techniques from the theory of exterior differential systems.

Holomorphic differentials and Laguerre deformation of surfaces

A Laguerre geometric local characterization is given of L-minimal surfaces and Laguerre deformations (T-transforms) of L-minimal isothermic surfaces in terms of the holomorphicity of a quartic and a quadratic differential. This is used to prove that, via their Laguerre Gauss maps, the T-transforms of L-minimal isothermic surfaces have constant mean curvature in some translate of hyperbolic 3-space or de Sitter 3-space in Minkowski 4-space, or have mean curvature zero in some translate of a time-oriented lightcone in Minkowski 4-space. As an application, we show that various instances of the Lawson isometric correspondence can be viewed as special cases of the T-transformation of L-isothermic surfaces with holomorphic quartic differential.

Lagrangian Curves in Affine Symplectic 4-space

Lagrangian curves in 4-space entertain intriguing relationships with second order deformation of plane curves under the special affine group and null curves in a 3-dimensional Lorentzian space form. We provide a natural affine symplectic frame for Lagrangian curves. It allows us to classify Lagrangrian curves with constant symplectic curvatures, to construct a class of Lagrangian tori and determine Lagrangian geodesics.

Motions of Curves in the Projective Plane Inducing the Kaup-Kupershmidt Hierarchy

The equation of a motion of curves in the projective plane is deduced. Local flows are defined in terms of polynomial differential functions. A family of local flows inducing the Kaup-Kupershmidt hierarchy is constructed. The integration of the congruence curves is discussed. Local motions defined by the traveling wave cnoidal solutions of the fifth-order Kaup-Kupershmidt equation are described.

Hamiltonian flows on null curves

The local motion of a null curve in Minkowski 3-space induces an evolution equation for its Lorentz invariant curvature. Special motions are constructed whose induced evolution equations are the members of the KdV hierarchy. The null curves which move under the KdV flow without changing shape are proven to be the trajectories of a certain particle model on null curves described by a Lagrangian linear in the curvature. In addition, it is shown that the curvature of a null curve which evolves by similarities can be computed in terms of the solutions of the second Painlevé equation.

Symplectic Applicability of Lagrangian Surfaces

We develop an approach to affine symplectic invariant geometry of Lagrangian surfaces by the method of moving frames. The fundamental invariants of elliptic Lagrangian immersions in affine symplectic four-space are derived together with their integrability equations. The invariant setup is applied to discuss the question of symplectic applicability for elliptic Lagrangian immersions. Explicit examples are considered.

Conformal deformation of spacelike surfaces in Minkowski space

We address the problem of second order conformal deformation of spacelike surfaces in compactified Minkowski 4-space. We explain the construction of the exterior differential system of conformal deformations and discuss its general and singular solutions. In particular, we show that isothermic surfaces are singular solutions of the system, which implies that a generic second order deformable surface is not isothermic. This differs from the situation in 3-dimensional conformal geometry, where isothermic surfaces coincide with deformable surfaces.

Reduction for constrained variational problems on 3D null curves

We consider the optimal control problem for null curves in de Sitter 3-space defined by a functional which is linear in the curvature of the trajectory. We show how techniques based on the method of moving frames and exterior differential systems, coupled with the reduction procedure for systems with a Lie group of symmetries lead to the integration by quadratures of the extremals. Explicit solutions are found in terms of elliptic functions and integrals.

Differential systems associated with tableaux over Lie algebras

We give an account of the construction of exterior differential systems based on the notion of tableaux over Lie algebras as developed in [Comm. Anal. Geom 14 (2006), 475-496; math.DG/0412169]. The definition of a tableau over a Lie algebra is revisited and extended in the light of the formalism of the Spencer cohomology; the question of involutiveness for the associated systems and their prolongations is addressed; examples are discussed.

Tableaux over Lie algebras, integrable systems, and classical surface theory

Starting from suitable tableaux over finite dimensional Lie algebras, we provide a scheme for producing involutive linear Pfaffian systems related to various classes of submanifolds in homogeneous spaces which constitute integrable systems. These include isothermic surfaces, Willmore surfaces, and other classical soliton surfaces. Completely integrable equations such as the G/G_0-system of Terng and the curved flat system of Ferus-Pedit may be obtained as special cases of this construction. Some classes of surfaces in projective differential geometry whose Gauss-Codazzi equations are associated with tableaux over sl(4,R) are discussed.

Deformation and applicability of surfaces in Lie sphere geometry

The theory of surfaces in Euclidean space can be naturally formulated in the more general context of Legendre surfaces into the space of contact elements. We address the question of deformability of Legendre surfaces with respect to the symmetry group of Lie sphere contact transformations from the point of view of the deformation theory of submanifolds in homogeneous spaces. Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided for a Legendre surface to admit non-trivial deformations and the corresponding existence problem is discussed.

Coisotropic Variational Problems

In this article we study constrained variational problems in one independent variable defined on the space of integral curves of a Frenet system in a homogeneous space G/H. We prove that if the Lagrangian is G-invariant and coisotropic then the extremal curves can be found by quadratures. Our proof is constructive and relies on the reduction theory for coisotropic optimal control problems. This gives a unified explanation of the integrability of several classical variational problems such as the total squared curvature functional, the projective, conformal and pseudo-conformal arc-length functionals, the Delaunay and the Poincar{é} variational problems.

The Cauchy problem for Lie-minimal surfaces

In the present paper we study the Lie sphere geometry of Legendre surfaces by the method of moving frame and we prove an existence theorem for real-analytic Lie-minimal Legendre surfaces.

Special Isothermic Surfaces and Solitons

We establish a correspondence between Darboux's special isothermic surfaces of type (A,0,C,D) and the solutions of the second order PDE : uΔ(u)-|\nabla(u)|^{2}+Φ^{4}=s, s \in R. We then use the classical Darboux transformation for isothermic surfaces to construct a Bäcklund transformation for this equation and prove a superposition formula for its solutions. As an application we discuss 1 and 2-soliton solutions and the corresponding surfaces.

Moebius geometry of surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic space

Various transformations of isothermic surfaces are discussed and their interrelations are analyzed. Applications to cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and their minimal cousins in Euclidean space are presented: the Umehara-Yamada perturbation, the classical and Bryant's Weierstrass type representations, and the duality for cmc-1 surfaces are interpreted in terms of transformations of isothermic surfaces. A new Weierstrass type representation is introduced and a Moebius geometric characterization of cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and minimal surfaces in Euclidean space is given.
