Dynamics of pedestrians in regions with no visibility - a lattice model without exclusion

We investigate the motion of pedestrians through obscure corridors where the lack of visibility (due to smoke, fog, darkness, etc.) hides the precise position of the exits. We focus our attention on a set of basic mechanisms, which we assume to be governing the dynamics at the individual level. Using a lattice model, we explore the effects of non-exclusion on the overall exit flux (evacuation rate). More precisely, we study the effect of the buddying threshold (of no-exclusion per site) on the dynamics of the crowd and investigate to which extent our model confirms the following pattern revealed by investigations on real emergencies: If the evacuees tend to cooperate and act altruistically, then their collective action tends to favor the occurrence of disasters.

Gibbsian properties and convergence of the iterates for the Block Averaging Transformation

We analyze the Block Averaging Transformation applied to the two--dimensional Ising model in the uniqueness region. We discuss the Gibbs property of the renormalized measure and the convergence of renormalized potential under iteration of the map. It turns out that for any temperature $T$ higher than the critical one $T_c$ the renormalized measure is strongly Gibbsian, whereas for $T T_c$ and in a weak sense for $T<T_c$. Since we are arbitrarily close to the coexistence region we have a diverging characteristic length of the system: the correlation length or the critical length for metastability, or both. Thus, to perturbatively treat the problem we use a scale--adapted expansion. The more delicate case is $T<T_c$ where we have a situation similar to that of a disordered system in the presence of a Griffiths' singularity. In this case we use a graded cluster expansion whose minimal scale length is diverging when approaching the coexistence line.

A note on the metastability of the Ising model: the alternate updating case

We study the metastable behavior of the two-dimensional Ising model in the case of an alternate updating rule: parallel updating of spins on the even (odd) sublattice are permitted at even (odd) times. We show that although the dynamics is different from the Glauber serial case the typical exit path from the metastable phase remains the same.

Graded cluster expansion for lattice systems

In this paper we develop a general theory which provides a unified treatment of two apparently different problems. The weak Gibbs property of measures arising from the application of Renormalization Group maps and the mixing properties of disordered lattice systems in the Griffiths' phase. We suppose that the system satisfies a mixing condition in a subset of the lattice whose complement is sparse enough namely, large regions are widely separated. We then show how it is possible to construct a convergent multi-scale cluster expansion.

A combinatorial proof of tree decay of semi-invariants

We consider finite range Gibbs fields and provide a purely combinatorial proof of the exponential tree decay of semi--invariants, supposing that the logarithm of the partition function can be expressed as a sum of suitable local functions of the boundary conditions. This hypothesis holds for completely analytical Gibbs fields; in this context the tree decay of semi--invariants has been proven via analyticity arguments. However the combinatorial proof given here can be applied also to the more complicated case of disordered systems in the so called Griffiths' phase when analyticity arguments fail.

Renormalization Group in the uniqueness region: weak Gibbsianity and convergence

We analyze the block averaging transformation applied to lattice gas models with short range interaction in the uniqueness region below the critical temperature. We prove weak Gibbsianity of the renormalized measure and convergence of the renormalized potential in a weak sense. Since we are arbitrarily close to the coexistence region we have a diverging characteristic length of the system: the correlation length or the critical length for metastability, or both. Thus, to perturbatively treat the problem we have to use a scale-adapted expansion. Moreover, such a model below the critical temperature resembles a disordered system in presence of Griffiths' singularity. Then the cluster expansion that we use must be graded with its minimal scale length diverging when the coexistence line is approached.

Perturbative analysis of disordered Ising models close to criticality

We consider a two-dimensional Ising model with random i.i.d. nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic couplings and no external magnetic field. We show that, if the probability of supercritical couplings is small enough, the system admits a convergent cluster expansion with probability one. The associated polymers are defined on a sequence of increasing scales; in particular the convergence of the above expansion implies the infinite differentiability of the free energy but not its analyticity. The basic tools in the proof are a general theory of graded cluster expansions and a stochastic domination of the disorder.

Metastability for a stochastic dynamics with a parallel heat bath updating rule

We consider the problem of metastability for a stochastic dynamics with a parallel updating rule with single spin rates equal to those of the heat bath for the Ising nearest neighbors interaction. We study the exit from the metastable phase, we describe the typical exit path and evaluate the exit time. We prove that the phenomenology of metastability is different from the one observed in the case of the serial implementation of the heat bath dynamics. In particular we prove that an intermediate chessboard phase appears during the excursion from the minus metastable phase toward the plus stable phase.

Competitive nucleation in metastable systems

Metastability is observed when a physical system is close to a first order phase transition. In this paper the metastable behavior of a two state reversible probabilistic cellular automaton with self-interaction is discussed. Depending on the self-interaction, competing metastable states arise and a behavior very similar to that of the three state Blume-Capel spin model is found.

Metastability for reversible probabilistic cellular automata with self--interaction

The problem of metastability for a stochastic dynamics with a parallel updating rule is addressed in the Freidlin--Wentzel regime, namely, finite volume, small magnetic field, and small temperature. The model is characterized by the existence of many fixed points and cyclic pairs of the zero temperature dynamics, in which the system can be trapped in its way to the stable phase. %The characterization of the metastable behavior %of a system in the context of parallel dynamics is a very difficult task, %since all the jumps in the configuration space are allowed. Our strategy is based on recent powerful approaches, not needing a complete description of the fixed points of the dynamics, but relying on few model dependent results. We compute the exit time, in the sense of logarithmic equivalence, and characterize the critical droplet that is necessarily visited by the system during its excursion from the metastable to the stable state. We need to supply two model dependent inputs: (1) the communication energy, that is the minimal energy barrier that the system must overcome to reach the stable state starting from the metastable one; (2) a recurrence property stating that for any configuration different from the metastable state there exists a path, starting from such a configuration and reaching a lower energy state, such that its maximal energy is lower than the communication energy.

Competitive nucleation in reversible Probabilistic Cellular Automata

The problem of competitive nucleation in the framework of Probabilistic Cellular Automata is studied from the dynamical point of view. The dependence of the metastability scenario on the self--interaction is discussed. An intermediate metastable phase, made of two flip--flopping chessboard configurations, shows up depending on the ratio between the magnetic field and the self--interaction. A behavior similar to the one of the stochastic Blume--Capel model with Glauber dynamics is found.

Finite size scaling in three-dimensional bootstrap percolation

We consider the problem of bootstrap percolation on a three dimensional lattice and we study its finite size scaling behavior. Bootstrap percolation is an example of Cellular Automata defined on the $d$-dimensional lattice $\{1,2,...,L\}^d$ in which each site can be empty or occupied by a single particle; in the starting configuration each site is occupied with probability $p$, occupied sites remain occupied for ever, while empty sites are occupied by a particle if at least $\ell$ among their $2d$ nearest neighbor sites are occupied. When $d$ is fixed, the most interesting case is the one $\ell=d$: this is a sort of threshold, in the sense that the critical probability $p_c$ for the dynamics on the infinite lattice ${\Bbb Z}^d$ switches from zero to one when this limit is crossed. Finite size effects in the three-dimensional case are already known in the cases $\ell\le 2$: in this paper we discuss the case $\ell=3$ and we show that the finite size scaling function for this problem is of the form $f(L)={\mathrm{const}}/\ln\ln L$. We prove a conjecture proposed by A.C.D. van Enter.

Critical droplets in Metastable States of Probabilistic Cellular Automata

We consider the problem of metastability in a probabilistic cellular automaton (PCA) with a parallel updating rule which is reversible with respect to a Gibbs measure. The dynamical rules contain two parameters $β$ and $h$ which resemble, but are not identical to, the inverse temperature and external magnetic field in a ferromagnetic Ising model; in particular, the phase diagram of the system has two stable phases when $β$ is large enough and $h$ is zero, and a unique phase when $h$ is nonzero. When the system evolves, at small positive values of $h$, from an initial state with all spins down, the PCA dynamics give rise to a transition from a metastable to a stable phase when a droplet of the favored $+$ phase inside the metastable $-$ phase reaches a critical size. We give heuristic arguments to estimate the critical size in the limit of zero ``temperature'' ($β\to\infty$), as well as estimates of the time required for the formation of such a droplet in a finite system. Monte Carlo simulations give results in good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

Persistence exponent in a superantiferromagnetic quenching

We measure the persistence exponent in a phase separating two-dimensional spin system with non-conserved dynamics quenched in a region with four coexisting stripe phases. The system is an Ising model with nearest neighbor, next-to-the-nearest neighbor and plaquette interactions. Due the particular nature of the ground states, the order parameter is defined in terms of blocks of spins. Our estimate of the persistence exponent, $θ=0.42$, differs from those of the two-dimensional Ising and four state Potts models. Our procedure allows the study of persistence properties also at finite temperature $T$: our results are compatible with the hypothesis that $θ$ does not depend on $T$ below the critical point.

Renormalization-group at criticality and complete analyticity of constrained models: a numerical study

We study the majority rule transformation applied to the Gibbs measure for the 2--D Ising model at the critical point. The aim is to show that the renormalized hamiltonian is well defined in the sense that the renormalized measure is Gibbsian. We analyze the validity of Dobrushin-Shlosman Uniqueness (DSU) finite-size condition for the "constrained models" corresponding to different configurations of the "image" system. It is known that DSU implies, in our 2--D case, complete analyticity from which, as it has been recently shown by Haller and Kennedy, Gibbsianness follows. We introduce a Monte Carlo algorithm to compute an upper bound to Vasserstein distance (appearing in DSU) between finite volume Gibbs measures with different boundary conditions. We get strong numerical evidence that indeed DSU condition is verified for a large enough volume $V$ for all constrained models.

Polymerization in a Ferromagnetic Spin Model with Threshold

We propose a spin model with a new kind of ferromagnetic interaction, which may be called {\it ferromagnetic coupling with threshold}. In this model the contribute of a given spin to the total energy has only two possible values and depends on the number of parallel spins among its nearest and next to the nearest neighbors. By mapping the model onto the Ising version of the isotropic eight vertex model, we obtain some evidence of a low temperature phase made of alternate parallel pluses and minuses polymers.

Folding transition of the triangular lattice in a discrete three--dimensional space

A vertex model introduced by M. Bowick, P. Di Francesco, O. Golinelli, and E. Guitter (cond-mat/9502063) describing the folding of the triangular lattice onto the face centered cubic lattice has been studied in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method. The model describes the behaviour of a polymerized membrane in a discrete three--dimensional space. We have introduced a curvature energy and a symmetry breaking field and studied the phase diagram of the resulting model. By varying the curvature energy parameter, a first-order transition has been found between a flat and a folded phase for any value of the symmetry breaking field.

Folding transitions of the triangular lattice with defects

A recently introduced model describing the folding of the triangular lattice is generalized allowing for defects in the lattice and written as an Ising model with nearest-neighbor and plaquette interactions on the honeycomb lattice. Its phase diagram is determined in the hexagon approximation of the cluster variation method and the crossover from the pure Ising to the pure folding model is investigated, obtaining a quite rich structure with several multicritical points. Our results are in very good agreement with the available exact ones and extend a previous transfer matrix study.
