Cascading from $\mathscr{N}=2$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory to Confinement and Chiral Symmetry Breaking in Adjoint QCD

We argue that adjoint QCD in 3+1 dimensions, with any $SU(N)$ gauge group and two Weyl fermion flavors (i.e. one adjoint Dirac fermion), confines and spontaneously breaks its chiral symmetries via the condensation of a fermion bilinear. We flow to this theory from pure $\mathscr{N}=2$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory with the same gauge group, by giving a SUSY-breaking mass $M$ to the scalars in the $\mathscr{N} = 2$ vector multiplet. This flow can be analyzed rigorously at small $M$, where it leads to a deconfined vacuum at the origin of the $\mathscr{N}=2$ Coulomb branch. The analysis can be extended to all $M$ using an Abelian dual description that arises from the $N$ multi-monopole points of the $\mathscr{N} = 2$ theory. At each such point, there are $N-1$ hypermultiplet Higgs fields $h_m^{i = 1, 2}$, which are $SU(2)_R$ doublets. We provide a detailed study of the phase diagram as a function of $M$, by analyzing the semi-classical phases of the dual using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques. The result is a cascade of first-order phase transitions, along which the Higgs fields $h_m^i$ successively turn on, and which interpolates between the Coulomb branch at small $M$, where all $h_m^i = 0$, and a maximal Higgs branch, where all $h_m^i \neq 0$, at sufficiently large $M$. We show that this maximal Higgs branch precisely matches the confining and chiral symmetry breaking phase of two-flavor adjoint QCD, including its broken and unbroken symmetries, its massless spectrum, and the expected large-$N$ scaling of various observables. The spontaneous breaking pattern $SU(2)_R \to U(1)_R$, consistent with the Vafa-Witten theorem, is ensured by an intricate alignment mechanism for the $h_m^i$ in the dual, and leads to a $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{P}^1$ sigma model of increasing radius along the cascade.

Large Landscape of 4d Superconformal Field Theories from Small Gauge Theories

We systematically explore the space of renormalization group flows of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) triggered by relevant deformations, as well as by coupling to free chiral multiplets with relevant operators. In this way, we classify all possible fixed point SCFTs that can be obtained from certain rank 1 and 2 supersymmetric gauge theories with small amount of matter multiplets, identifying 7,346 inequivalent fixed points which pass a series of non-trivial consistency checks. This set of fixed points exhibits interesting statistical behaviors, including a narrow distribution of central charges $(a, c)$, a correlation between the number of relevant operators and the ratio $a/c$, and trends in the lightest operator dimension versus $a/c$. The ratio $a/c$ of this set is distributed between $0.7228$ and $1.2100$, where the upper bound is larger than that of previously known interacting SCFTs. Moreover, we find a plethora of highly non-perturbative phenomena, such as (super)symmetry enhancements, operator decoupling, non-commuting renormalization group flows, and dualities. We especially identify amongst these fixed points a new SCFT that has smaller central charges $(a, c) = (\frac{633}{2000},\frac{683}{2000})$ than that of the deformed minimal Argyres-Douglas theory, as well as novel Lagrangian duals for certain $\mathcal{N}=1$ deformed Argyres-Douglas theories. We provide a website https://qft.kaist.ac.kr/landscape to navigate through our set of fixed points.

Dimensionally Reducing Generalized Symmetries from (3+1)-Dimensions

Recently there has been an increasing interest in the study of generalized symmetries in dimensions higher than two. This has lead to the discovery of various manifestations of generalized symmetries, notably higher-group and non-invertible symmetries, in four dimensions. In this paper we shall examine what happens to this structure when the 4d theory is compactified to lower dimensions, specifically to 3d and 2d, where we shall be mainly interested in generalized symmetry structures whose origin can be linked to mixed flavor-gauge anomalies. We discuss several aspects of the compactification, and in particular argue that under certain conditions the discussed generalized symmetry structure may trivialize in the infrared. Nevertheless, we show that even when this happens the presence of the 4d generalized symmetry structure may still leave an imprint on the low-energy theory in terms of additional 't Hooft anomalies or by breaking part of the symmetry. We apply and illustrate this using known examples of compactifications from four dimensions, particularly, the reduction of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ $U(N_c)$ SQCD on a circle to 3d and on a sphere to 2d.

Dualities of Adjoint SQCD and Supersymmetry Enhancement

We propose a new dual description of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ $SU(N)$ gauge theory with one adjoint ($X$) and $N_f$ fundamental matters with a superpotential $W = \text{Tr}\, X^{p+1}$. The dual theory consists of the $\mathcal{D}_p[SU(N)]$ Argyres-Douglas theory coupled to $SU(N)$ gauge theory and $N_f$ fundamentals with a superpotential deformation. We study renormalization group fixed points of the Argyres-Douglas dual theories with and without superpotential deformations, and identify the conditions for them to be dual to the fixed points of adjoint SQCD. We check our proposal via matching central charges, chiral operators and superconformal indices. We find that when $N_f = 2N$ and $p=2$, the dual theory flows to $\mathcal{N}=2$ $SU(N)$ superconformal QCD with $2N$ flavors upon suitable superpotential deformation, exhibiting supersymmetry enhancement.

Symmetry TFTs and Anomalies of Non-Invertible Symmetries

It is known that the 't Hooft anomalies of invertible global symmetries can be characterized by an invertible TQFT in one higher dimension. The analogous statement remains to be understood for non-invertible symmetries. In this note we discuss how the linking invariants in a non-invertible TQFT known as the Symmetry TFT (SymTFT) can be used as a diagnostic for 't Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries. When the non-invertible symmetry is non-intrinsically non-invertible, and hence the SymTFT is a Dijkgraaf-Witten model, the linking invariants can be computed explicitly. We illustrate this proposal through the examples of the abelian Higgs model in 2d, as well as adjoint QCD and $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills in 4d. We also comment on how the 't Hooft anomalies of non-invertible symmetries impose new constraints on the dynamics.

Aspects of Irregular Punctures via Holography

We present new families of $AdS_5$ solutions in M-theory preserving 4d ${\mathcal N = 2}$ supersymmetry. We perform a systematic analysis of holographic observables for these solutions, providing evidence for an interpretation in terms of 4d superconformal field theories (SCFTs) of Argyres-Douglas type, realized in class $\mathcal S$ via a sphere with one irregular, and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions exhibit internal M5-brane sources that correspond to the irregular puncture. For a family of solutions, we identify explicitly the class $\mathcal S$ puncture data and perform a detailed match, including Higgs branch operators. For other families we comment on proposed field theory duals, based on irregular punctures labeled by nested Young tableaux.

Exploring the Strong-Coupling Region of $SU(N)$ Seiberg-Witten Theory

We consider the Seiberg-Witten solution of pure $\mathcal{N} =2$ gauge theory in four dimensions, with gauge group $SU(N)$. A simple exact series expansion for the dependence of the $2 (N-1)$ Seiberg-Witten periods $a_I(u), a_{DI}(u)$ on the $N-1$ Coulomb-branch moduli $u_n$ is obtained around the $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$-symmetric point of the Coulomb branch, where all $u_n$ vanish. This generalizes earlier results for $N=2$ in terms of hypergeometric functions, and for $N=3$ in terms of Appell functions. Using these and other analytical results, combined with numerical computations, we explore the global structure of the Kähler potential $K = \frac{1}{2π} \sum_I \text{Im}(\bar a_I a_{DI})$, which is single valued on the Coulomb branch. Evidence is presented that $K$ is a convex function, with a unique minimum at the $\mathbb{Z}_{2N}$-symmetric point. Finally, we explore candidate walls of marginal stability in the vicinity of this point, and their relation to the surface of vanishing Kähler potential.

M5-brane Sources, Holography, and Argyres-Douglas Theories

We initiate a study of the holographic duals of a class of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories that are engineered by wrapping M5-branes on a sphere with an irregular puncture. These notably include the strongly-coupled field theories of Argyres-Douglas type. Our solutions are obtained in 7d gauged supergravity, where they take the form of a warped product of $AdS_5$ and a "half-spindle." The irregular puncture is modeled by a localized M5-brane source in the internal space of the gravity duals. Our solutions feature a realization of supersymmetry that is distinct from the usual topological twist, as well as an interesting Stückelberg mechanism involving the gauge field associated to a generator of the isometry algebra of the internal space. We check the proposed duality by computing the holographic central charge, the flavor symmetry central charge, and the dimensions of various supersymmetric probe M2-branes, and matching these with the dual Argyres-Douglas field theories. Furthermore, we compute the large-$N$ 't Hooft anomalies of the field theories using anomaly inflow methods in M-theory, and find perfect agreement with the proposed duality.

Holographic Duals of Argyres-Douglas Theories

We present new $AdS_5$ solutions in 11d supergravity and identify them as the gravity duals of a class of 4d $\mathcal N = 2$ SCFTs of Argyres-Douglas type, engineered by a stack of M5-branes wrapped on a sphere with one irregular puncture and one regular puncture. The gravity solutions feature an internal M5-brane source, which is dual to the irregular puncture. Thanks to a novel Stückelberg mechanism involving an axion originating from the expansion of the M-theory 3-form, one of the isometry generators on the gravity side is not mapped to a continuous symmetry on the SCFT side.

Revisiting the Multi-Monopole Point of $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N} = 2$ Gauge Theory in Four Dimensions

Motivated by applications to soft supersymmetry breaking, we revisit the expansion of the Seiberg-Witten solution around the multi-monopole point on the Coulomb branch of pure $SU(N)$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theory in four dimensions. At this point $N-1$ mutually local magnetic monopoles become massless simultaneously, and in a suitable duality frame the gauge couplings logarithmically run to zero. We explicitly calculate the leading threshold corrections to this logarithmic running from the Seiberg-Witten solution by adapting a method previously introduced by D'Hoker and Phong. We compare our computation to existing results in the literature; this includes results specific to $SU(2)$ and $SU(3)$ gauge theories, the large-$N$ results of Douglas and Shenker, as well as results obtained by appealing to integrable systems or topological strings. We find broad agreement, while also clarifying some lingering inconsistencies. Finally, we explicitly extend the results of Douglas and Shenker to finite $N$, finding exact agreement with our first calculation.

Renormalization Group Improvement of the Effective Potential: an EFT Approach

We apply effective field theory (EFT) methods to compute the renormalization group improved effective potential for theories with a large mass hierarchy. Our method allows one to compute the effective potential in a systematic expansion in powers of the mass ratio, as well as to sum large logarithms of mass ratios using renormalization group evolution. The effective potential is the sum of one-particle irreducible diagrams (1PI) but information about which diagrams are 1PI is lost after matching to the EFT, since heavy lines get shrunk to a point. We therefore introduce a tadpole condition in place of the 1PI condition, and use the renormalization group improved value of the tadpole in computing the effective potential. We explain why the effective potential computed using an EFT is not the same as the effective potential of the EFT. We illustrate our method using the $O(N)$ model, a theory of two scalars in the unbroken and broken phases, and the Higgs-Yukawa model. Our leading-log result, obtained by integrating the one-loop $β$-functions, correctly reproduces the log-squared term in explicit two-loop calculations. Our method does not have a Goldstone boson infrared divergence problem.

Anomalies of QFTs from M-theory and Holography

We describe a systematic way of computing the 't Hooft anomalies for continuous symmetries of Quantum Field Theories in even dimensions that can be geometrically engineered from M5-branes. Our approach is based on anomaly inflow, and characterizes the anomaly polynomial of the QFT in terms of the geometric definition of the field theory. In particular, when the QFT admits a holographic dual, the topological data of the solution is sufficient to compute the anomalies of the dual field theory, including finite terms in $N$. We study several classes of examples in four and six dimensions, with or without known M5-brane probe configurations.

Anomaly Inflow for M5-branes on Punctured Riemann Surfaces

We derive the anomaly polynomials of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories that are obtained by wrapping M5-branes on a Riemann surface with arbitrary regular punctures, using anomaly inflow in the corresponding M-theory setup. Our results match the known anomaly polynomials for the 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ class $\mathcal{S}$ SCFTs. In our approach, the contributions to the 't Hooft anomalies due to boundary conditions at the punctures are determined entirely by $G_4$-flux in the 11d geometry. This computation provides a top-down derivation of these contributions that utilizes the geometric definition of the field theories, complementing the previous field-theoretic arguments.

Landscape of Simple Superconformal Field Theories in 4d

We explore the space of renormalization group flows that originate from $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric $SU(2)$ gauge theory with one adjoint and a pair of fundamental chiral multiplets. By considering all possible relevant deformations - including coupling to gauge-singlet chiral multiplets - we find 34 fixed points in this simple setup. We observe that theories in this class exhibit many novel phenomena: emergent symmetry, decoupling of operators, and narrow distribution of central charges $a/c$. This set of theories includes two of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ minimal Argyres-Douglas theories and their mass deformed versions. In addition, we find 36 candidate fixed point theories possessing unphysical fermionic operators -including one with central charges $(a, c)\simeq (0.20, 0.22)$ that are smaller than any known superconformal theory -that need further investigation.

Structure of Anomalies of 4d SCFTs from M5-branes, and Anomaly Inflow

We study the 't Hooft anomalies of four-dimensional superconformal field theories that arise from M5-branes wrapped on a punctured Riemann surface. In general there are two independent contributions to the anomalies. There is a bulk term obtained by integrating the anomaly polynomial of the world-volume theory on the M5-branes over the Riemann surface; this contribution knows about the punctures only through its dependence on the Euler characteristic of the surface. The second set of contributions comes from local data at the punctures; these terms are independent from the bulk data of the surface. Using anomaly inflow in M-theory, we describe the general structure of the anomalies for cases when the four-dimensional theories preserve N=2 supersymmetry. We additionally discuss the anomalies corresponding to (p,q) punctures in N=1 theories.

Class $\mathcal{S}$ Anomalies from M-theory Inflow

We present a first principles derivation of the anomaly polynomials of 4d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ class $\mathcal{S}$ theories of type $A_{N-1}$ with arbitrary regular punctures, using anomaly inflow in the corresponding M-theory setup with $N$ M5-branes wrapping a punctured Riemann surface. The labeling of punctures in our approach follows entirely from the analysis of the 11d geometry and $G_4$ flux. We highlight the applications of the inflow method to the AdS/CFT correspondence.

4d SCFTs from negative-degree line bundles

We construct 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ quantum field theories by compactifying the (2,0) theories on a Riemann surface with genus $g$ and $n$ punctures, where the normal bundle decomposes into a sum of two line bundles with possibly negative degrees $p$ and $q$. Until recently, the only available field-theoretic constructions required the line bundle degrees to be nonnegative, although supergravity solutions were constructed in the literature for the zero-puncture case for all $p$ and $q$. Here, we provide field-theoretic constructions and computations of the central charges of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFTs that are the IR limit of M5-branes wrapping a surface with general $p$ or $q$ negative, for general genus $g$ and number of maximal punctures $n$.

Deformations of $W_{A,D,E}$ SCFTs

We discuss aspects of theories with superpotentials given by Arnold's $A,D,E$ singularities, particularly the novelties that arise when the fields are matrices. We focus on 4d ${\cal N}=1$ variants of susy QCD, with $U(N_c)$ or $SU(N_c)$ gauge group, $N_f$ fundamental flavors, and adjoint matter fields $X$ and $Y$ appearing in $W_{A,D,E}(X,Y)$ superpotentials. Many of our considerations also apply in other possible contexts for matrix-variable $W_{A,D,E}$. The 4d $W_{A,D,E}$ SQCD-type theories RG flow to superconformal field theories, and there are proposed duals in the literature for the $W_{A_k}$, $W_{D_k}$, and $W_{E_7}$ cases. As we review, the $W_{D_\text{even}}$ and $W_{E_7}$ duals rely on a conjectural, quantum truncation of the chiral ring. We explore these issues by considering various deformations of the $W_{A,D,E}$ superpotentials, and the resulting RG flows and IR theories. Rather than finding supporting evidence for the quantum truncation and $W_{D_\text{even}}$ and $W_{E_7}$ duals, we note some challenging evidence to the contrary.
