On compressible fluid flows of Forchheimer-type in rotating heterogeneous porous media

We study the dynamics of compressible fluids in rotating heterogeneous porous media. The fluid flow is of {F}orchheimer-type and is subject to a mixed mass and volumetric flux boundary condition. The governing equations are reduced to a nonlinear partial differential equation for the pseudo-pressure. This parabolic-typed equation can be degenerate and/or singular in the spatial variables, the unknown and its gradient. We establish the $L^α$-estimate for the solutions, for any positive number $α$, in terms of the initial and boundary data and the angular speed of rotation. It requires new elliptic and parabolic Sobolev inequalities and trace theorem with multiple weights that are suitable to the nonlinear structure of the equation. The $L^\infty$-estimate is then obtained without imposing any conditions on the $L^\infty$-norms of the weights and the initial and boundary data.

A Relaxed Direct-insertion Downscaling Method For Discrete-in-time Data Assimilation

This paper improves the spectrally-filtered direct-insertion downscaling method for discrete-in-time data assimilation by introducing a relaxation parameter that overcomes a constraint on the observation frequency. Numerical simulations demonstrate that taking the relaxation parameter proportional to the time between observations allows one to vary the observation frequency over a wide range while maintaining convergence of the approximating solution to the reference solution. Under the same assumptions we analytically prove that taking the observation frequency to infinity results in the continuous-in-time nudging method.

A priori estimates for gaseous flows of Forchheimer-type in heterogeneous porous media

We study isentropic fluid flows of gases of the Forchheimer-type in heterogeneous porous media. The governing equation is a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation with coefficients depending on the spatial variables. Its solutions are subject to a nonlinear Robin boundary condition. We establish the estimates of the solutions for short time in terms of the initial and boundary data. For the proof, the multi-weight versions of the Sobolev inequality, parabolic Sobolev inequality and trace theorem are derived. They are then used to implement the Moser iteration for suitable weighted norms.

Data Assimilation using Time-Delay Nudging in the Presence of Gaussian Noise

We study a discrete-in-time data-assimilation algorithm based on nudging through a time-delayed feedback control in which the observational measurements have been contaminated by a Gaussian noise process. In the context of the two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations we prove the expected value of the square-error between the approximating solution and the reference solution over time is proportional to the variance of the noise up to a logarithmic correction. The qualitative behavior and physical relevance of our analysis is further illustrated by numerical simulation.

Studying a doubly nonlinear model of slightly compressible Forchheimer flows in rotating porous media

We study the generalized Forchheimer flows of slightly compressible fluids in rotating porous media. In the problem's model, the varying density in the Coriolis force is fully accounted for without any simplifications. It results in a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation for the density. We derive a priori estimates for the solutions in terms of the initial, boundary data and physical parameters, emphasizing on the case of unbounded data. Weighted Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities suitable to the equation's nonlinearity, adapted Moser's iteration and maximum principle are used and combined to obtain different types of estimates.

Slightly Compressible Forchheimer Flows in Rotating Porous Media

We formulate the the generalized Forchheimer equations for the three-dimensional fluid flows in rotating porous media. By implicitly solving the momentum in terms of the pressure's gradient, we derive a degenerate parabolic equation for the density in the case of slightly compressible fluids and study its corresponding initial, boundary value problem. We investigate the nonlinear structure of the parabolic equation. The maximum principle is proved and used to obtain the maximum estimates for the solution. Various estimates are established for the solution's gradient, in the Lebesgue norms of any order, in terms of the initial and boundary data. All estimates contain explicit dependence on key physical parameters including the angular speed.

Spectral Filtering of Interpolant Observables for a Discrete-in-time Downscaling Data Assimilation Algorithm

We describe a spectrally-filtered discrete-in-time downscaling data assimilation algorithm and prove, in the context of the two-dimensional Navier--Stokes equations, that this algorithm works for a general class of interpolants, such as those based on local spatial averages as well as point measurements of the velocity. Our algorithm is based on the classical technique of inserting new observational data directly into the dynamical model as it is being evolved over time, rather than nudging, and extends previous results in which the observations were defined directly in terms of an orthogonal projection onto the large-scale (lower) Fourier modes. In particular, our analysis does not require the interpolant to be represented by an orthogonal projection, but requires only the interpolant to satisfy a natural approximation of the identity.

Fluid Flows of Mixed Regimes in Porous Media

In porous media, there are three known regimes of fluid flows, namely, pre-Darcy, Darcy and post-Darcy. Because of their different natures, these are usually treated separately in literature. To study complex flows when all three regimes may be present in different portions of a same domain, we use a single equation of motion to unify them. Several scenarios and models are then considered for slightly compressible fluids. A nonlinear parabolic equation for the pressure is derived, which is degenerate when the pressure gradient is either small or large. We estimate the pressure and its gradient for all time in terms of initial and boundary data. We also obtain their particular bounds for large time which depend on the asymptotic behavior of the boundary data but not on the initial one. Moreover, the continuous dependence of the solutions on initial and boundary data, and the structural stability for the equation are established.

Doubly nonlinear parabolic equations for a general class of Forchheimer gas flows in porous media

This paper is focused on the generalized Forchheimer flows of compressible fluids in porous media. The gravity effect and other general nonlinear forms of the source terms and boundary fluxes are integrated into the model. It covers isentropic gas flows, ideal gases and slightly compressible fluids. We derive a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation for the so-called pseudo-pressure, and study the corresponding initial boundary value problem. The maximum estimates of the solution are established by using suitable trace theorem and adapting appropriately the Moser's iteration. The gradient estimates are obtained under a theoretical condition which, indeed, is relevant to the fluid flows in applications.

Maximum estimates for generalized Forchheimer flows in heterogeneous porous media

This article continues our previous study of generalized Forchheimer flows in heterogeneous porous media. Such flows are used to account for deviations from Darcy's law. In heterogeneous media, the derived nonlinear partial differential equation for the pressure can be singular and degenerate in the spatial variables, in addition to being degenerate for large pressure gradient. Here we obtain the estimates for the $L^\infty$-norms of the pressure and its time derivative in terms of the initial and the time-dependent boundary data. They are established by implementing De Giorgi's iteration in the context of weighted norms with the weights specifically defined by the Forchheimer equation's coefficient functions. With these weights, we prove suitable weighted parabolic Poincaré-Sobolev inequalities and use them to facilitate the iteration. Moreover, local in time $L^\infty$-bounds are combined with uniform Gronwall-type energy inequalities to obtain long-time $L^\infty$-estimates.

Generalized Forchheimer flows in heterogeneous porous media

We study the generalized Forchheimer flows of slightly compressible fluids in heterogeneous porous media. The media's porosity and coefficients of the Forchheimer equation are functions of the spatial variables. The partial differential equation for the pressure is degenerate in its gradient and can be both singular and degenerate in the spatial variables. Suitable weighted Lebesgue norms for the pressure, its gradient and time derivative are estimated. The continuous dependence on the initial and boundary data is established for the pressure and its gradient with respect to those corresponding norms. Asymptotic estimates are derived even for unbounded boundary data as time tends to infinity.

Generalized Forchheimer flows of isentropic gases

We consider generalized Forchheimer flows of either isentropic gases or slightly compressible fluids in porous media. By using Muskat's and Ward's general form of the Forchheimer equations, we describe the fluid dynamics by a doubly nonlinear parabolic equation for the appropriately defined pseudo-pressure. The volumetric flux boundary condition is converted to a time-dependent Robin-type boundary condition for this pseudo-pressure. We study the corresponding initial boundary value problem, and estimate the $L^\infty$ and $W^{1,2-a}$ (with $0<a<1$) norms for the solution on the entire domain in terms of the initial and boundary data. It is carried out by using a suitable trace theorem and an appropriate modification of Moser's iteration.
