Dating of a Latin astrolabe

We have determined the most probable date for the catalog of 34 stars that was used in the construction of a Latin astrolabe originally owned by the Dominican preacher friars and presently at Mus\'ee des Arts pr\'ecieux Paul-Dupuy (Toulouse, France). To this end we digitized a photograph of the rete and the rule of the astrolabe, computed the equatorial coordinates of the ends of the 34 star pointers of the rete, and produced a list of 113 reference stars taken from several lists of stars on astrolabes. We then compared the coordinates of the ends of the pointers and those of the reference stars for dates between 1400 and 1700. The most probable date for this astrolabe is 1550.

Biography of the French astronomer Henri Camichel

Henri Camichel was an astronomer at Pic du Midi Observatory, where he contributed to the study of planets of the solar system and their satellites with Audouin Dollfus and his team. In 1961, with Charles Boyer, he found that the upper atmosphere of Venus had a counter-clockwise rotation of four days, which was later confirmed by space probes, as were the team's accurate measurements of the diameters of planets. He was also an instrumentalist, and contributed to the maintenance and development of the telescopes, notably the 2-meter telescope and focal instruments at Pic du Midi Observatory.

The solar eclipse of August 30, 1905 at Alcala de Chisvert

Solar eclipses play an important role in the history of astronomy because their observation allowed astrophysics to expand. The eclipse of August 30th, 1905 is particularly interesting since the line of totality passes through Spain and Algeria, and that it will last 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Consequently, all the French observatories send astronomers to observe it. About a hundred amateur astronomers of the French Astronomical Society also go to various sites, as well as quite a few individuals who are simply curious, like Camille Saint-Saëns. Count Aymar de la Baume Pluvinel and his two young assistants settle in at Alcala de Chisvert, between Tarragona and Valencia.

Joseph Devaux (1902-1936) Meteorologist at Pic du Midi Observatory

Joseph Devaux, who held a position of assistant-meteorologist at Pic du Midi Observatory, had an outstanding career. He devoted his life to the Pic and to scientific research. A pioneer of the study of snow and glaciers, he also pursued research in many fields of atmospheric physics. He was the physicist with Commandant Charcot polar expeditions but was lost at sea (when the Pourquoi-Pas ? sank) before he was able to use his talents to the full.

Multivariate analysis of the globular clusters in M87

An objective classification of 147 globular clusters in the inner region of the giant elliptical galaxy M87 is carried out with the help of two methods of multivariate analysis. First independent component analysis is used to determine a set of independent variables that are linear combinations of various observed parameters (mostly Lick indices) of the globular clusters. Next K-means cluster analysis is applied on the independent components, to find the optimum number of homogeneous groups having an underlying structure. The properties of the four groups of globular clusters thus uncovered are used to explain the formation mechanism of the host galaxy. It is suggested that M87 formed in two successive phases. First a monolithic collapse, which gave rise to an inner group of metal-rich clusters with little systematic rotation and an outer group of metal-poor clusters in eccentric orbits. In a second phase, the galaxy accreted low-mass satellites in a dissipationless fashion, from the gas of which the two other groups of globular clusters formed. Evidence is given {\bf for a blue stellar population in the more metal rich clusters, which we interpret by Helium enrichment.} Finally, it is found that the clusters of M87 differ in some of their chemical properties (NaD, TiO1, light element abundances) from globular clusters in our Galaxy and M31.

Formation of dwarf ellipticals and dwarf irregular galaxies by interaction of giant galaxies under environmental influence

A model is proposed for the formation of gas-rich dwarf irregular galaxies and gas-poor, rotating dwarf elliptical galaxies following the interaction between two giant galaxies as a function of space density. The formation of dwarf galaxies is considered to depend on a random variable, the tidal index theta, an environmental parameter defined by Karachentsev et al. (2004), such that for theta less than zero, the formation of dwarf irregular galaxy is assured whereas for theta greater than zero, the formation of dwarf ellipticals is preferred. It is found that for particular ranges of the interactive parameters the model predictions are in good agreement with the observed number density of the different galaxy types as a function of space density in four clusters of galaxies. This supports the fact that galaxy interactions do not all necessarily give rise to the formation of either dwarf irregulars or dwarf ellipticals. It is also shown that the formation of dwarf irregulars at high densities is much lower than that of dwarf ellipticals, and that the formation of the latter reaches a maximum at a particular space density, unlike the former. This suggests that at high densities many dwarf irregulars are stripped of their gaseous envelopes to become dwarf elliptical.

Biography of eight astronomers and physicists

We provide a brief biography of seven French astronomers and physicists and of a Russian astronomer from the 19th and 20th centuries. Roger Bouigue (1920-) was the director of Toulouse Observatory in the 1960s. Claude-Louis Mathieu (1783-1875), a member of Bureau des Longitudes, worked in geodetics and celestial mechanics. Claude Pouillet (1790-1868), a physics professor, was the first to measure the solar constant. Yves Rocard (1903-1992) conducted research in many fields of physics, and founded the radioastronomy Observatory of Nancay. Jean Rosch (1915-1999) was the director of Pic du Midi Observatory for over thirty years, and in this capacity lead it to the forefront of research in high-resolution solar and planetary astronomy. Cyrille Souillart (1828-1898) had a lifelong interest in the theory of Jupiter's satellites. Jules Violle (1841- 1923) was a physics professor who determined the temperature of the solar photosphere. The Russian astronomer Kirill Ogorodnikov (1900-1985) wrote a well-known manual on stellar dynamics.

A search for RCB stars in globular clusters

There are only about 65 R Coronae Borealis stars known in our Galaxy, and none in globular clusters. As these stars are thought to result from the merger of two white dwarfs, one would expect the higher stellar density of globular clusters to favor their formation. We have searched for such stars in Galactic globular clusters, as their presence in a specific category of clusters might provide more clues as to their formation. We selected from the WISE all-Sky source catalog all the stars within the tidal radius of the 150 globular clusters within 50 kpc, which is the distance to which RCB stars are detectable by WISE. The total number of stars selected in this way was 635989. We then successively applied the eight selection criteria of Tisserand (2012) satisfied by RCB stars to the dereddened photometric WISE and 2MASS data. Only three stars satisfying the conditions were found in the field of three globular clusters. The star in the field of Liller 1 is most probably a protostar. For the two other candidates, the absence of photometry in the visible range did not allow us to establish their nature with certainty. We further identified one dust-enshrouded star that only satisfied the first selection criteria, and used DUSTY to determine that it is a star of temperature 4800K enshrouded in a dusty envelope with a temperature 300 K and an opacity in the visible of 0.59. It is probably an Xray binary star with a dusty accretion disk. We found no RCB stars truly belonging to a globular cluster, thus providing a constraint on their formation mechanism.

A six-parameter space to describe galaxy diversification

Galaxy diversification proceeds by transforming events like accretion, interaction or mergers. These explain the formation and evolution of galaxies that can now be described with many observables. Multivariate analyses are the obvious tools to tackle the datasets and understand the differences between different kinds of objects. However, depending on the method used, redundancies, incompatibilities or subjective choices of the parameters can void the usefulness of such analyses. The behaviour of the available parameters should be analysed before an objective reduction of dimensionality and subsequent clustering analyses can be undertaken, especially in an evolutionary context. We study a sample of 424 early-type galaxies described by 25 parameters, ten of which are Lick indices, to identify the most structuring parameters and determine an evolutionary classification of these objects. Four independent statistical methods are used to investigate the discriminant properties of the observables and the partitioning of the 424 galaxies: Principal Component Analysis, K-means cluster analysis, Minimum Contradiction Analysis and Cladistics. Uncovering the formation of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies by multivariate statistical analysis

We present a statistical analysis of the properties of a large sample of dynamically hot old stellar systems, from globular clusters to giant ellipticals, which was performed in order to investigate the origin of ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. The data were mostly drawn from Forbes et al. (2008). We recalculated some of the effective radii, computed mean surface brightnesses and mass-to-light-ratios, estimated ages and metallicities. We completed the sample with globular clusters of M31. We used a multivariate statistical technique (K-Means clustering), together with a new algorithm (Gap Statistics) for finding the optimum number of homogeneous sub-groups in the sample, using a total of six parameters (absolute magnitude, effective radius, virial mass-to-light ratio, stellar mass-to-light ratio and metallicity). We found six groups. FK1 and FK5 are composed of high- and low-mass elliptical galaxies respectively. FK3 and FK6 are composed of high-metallicity and low-metallicity objects, respectively, and both include globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies. Two very small groups, FK2 and FK4, are composed of Local Group dwarf spheroidals. Our groups differ in their mean masses and virial mass-to-light ratios. The relations between these two parameters are also different for the various groups. The probability density distributions of metallicity for the four groups of galaxies is similar to that of the globular clusters and UCDs. The brightest low-metallicity globular clusters and ultra-compact dwarf galaxies tend to follow the mass-metallicity relation like elliptical galaxies. The objects of FK3 are more metal-rich per unit effective luminosity density than high-mass ellipticals.

Structures in the fundamental plane of early-type galaxies

The fundamental plane of early-type galaxies is a rather tight three-parameter correlation discovered more than twenty years ago. It has resisted a both global and precise physical interpretation despite a consequent number of works, observational, theoretical or using numerical simulations. It appears that its precise properties depend on the population of galaxies in study. Instead of selecting a priori these populations, we propose to objectively construct homologous populations from multivariate analyses. We have undertaken multivariate cluster and cladistic analyses of a sample of 56 low-redshift galaxy clusters containing 699 early-type galaxies, using four parameters: effective radius, velocity dispersion, surface brightness averaged over effective radius, and Mg2 index. All our analyses are consistent with seven groups that define separate regions on the global fundamental plane, not across its thickness. In fact, each group shows its own fundamental plane, which is more loosely defined for less diversified groups. We conclude that the global fundamental plane is not a bent surface, but made of a collection of several groups characterizing several fundamental planes with different thicknesses and orientations in the parameter space. Our diversification scenario probably indicates that the level of diversity is linked to the number and the nature of transforming events and that the fundamental plane is the result of several transforming events. We also show that our classification, not the fundamental planes, is universal within our redshift range (0.007 - 0.053). We find that the three groups with the thinnest fundamental planes presumably formed through dissipative (wet) mergers. In one of them, this(ese) merger(s) must have been quite ancient because of the relatively low metallicity of its galaxies, Two of these groups have subsequently undergone dry mergers to increase their masses. In the k-space, the third one clearly occupies the region where bulges (of lenticular or spiral galaxies) lie and might also have formed through minor mergers and accretions. The two least diversified groups probably did not form by major mergers and must have been strongly affected by interactions, some of the gas in the objects of one of these groups having possibly been swept out. The interpretation, based on specific assembly histories of galaxies of our seven groups, shows that they are truly homologous. They were obtained directly from several observables, thus independently of any a priori classification. The diversification scenario relating these groups does not depend on models or numerical simulations, but is objectively provided by the cladistic analysis. Consequently, our classification is more easily compared to models and numerical simulations, and our work can be readily repeated with additional observables.

SAO-6m Telescope Spectroscopic Observations of Globular Clusters in Nearby Galaxies

We present the results of medium-resolution spectroscopy of 28 globular clusters (GCs) in six nearby galaxies of different luminosities and morphological types, situated in: M33 (15 objects), M31 (3), IC10 (4), UGCA86 (4), HolmbergIX (1), and DDO71 (1) obtained at the Special Astrophysical Observatory 6-meter telescope. Measurements of Lick absorption-line indices and comparison with SSP models enabled us to obtain their spectroscopic ages, metallicities and alpha-element to Fe abundance ratios. We found that all old and intermediate-age GCs in our sample have low metallicities [Z/H] < -0.8 dex. Metal-rich clusters are young and are preferentially found in galaxies more massive than ~10^9 M_sun. The least massive dwarfs of our sample, DDO71 and HolmbergIX, host one massive intermediate-age and one massive young metal-poor GC, respectively. [a/Fe] abundance ratios tend to be enhanced but closer to solar values for dwarf galaxies compared to GCs in more massive galaxies. We analyse the age-metallicity relation for GCs in our galaxy sample and others from the literature, and find, that 1) there is a general trend for GCs in low surface brightness dwarf galaxies to be more metal-poor at a given age than GCs in more massive galaxies; 2) the GC metallicity spread is wider for more massive galaxies; 3) intermediate-age GCs in early-type dwarf galaxies are more metal-rich at any given age than those in irregular galaxies of similar luminosity.

Study of NGC 5128 Globular Clusters Under Multivariate Statistical Paradigm

An objective classification of the globular clusters of NGC 5128 has been carried out by using a model-based approach of cluster analysis. The set of observable parameters includes structural parameters, spectroscopically determined Lick indices and radial velocities from the literature. The optimum set of parameters for this type of analysis is selected through a modified technique of Principal Component Analysis, which differs from the classical one in the sense that it takes into consideration the effects of outliers present in the data. Then a mixture model based approach has been used to classify the globular clusters into groups. The efficiency of the techniques used is tested through the comparison of the misclassification probabilities with those obtained using the K-means clustering technique. On the basis of the above classification scheme three coherent groups of globular clusters have been found. We propose that the clusters of one group originated in the original cluster formation event that coincided with the formation of the elliptical galaxy, and that the clusters of the two other groups are of external origin, from tidally stripped dwarf galaxies on random orbits around NGC 5128 for one group, and from an accreted spiral galaxy for the other.

The environment of formation as a second parameter for globular cluster classification

We perform an evolutionary multivariate analysis of a sample of 54 Galactic globular clusters with high-quality colour-magnitude diagrams and well-determined ages. The four parameters adopted for the analysis are: metallicity, age, maximum temperature on the horizontal branch, and absolute V magnitude. Our cladistic analysis breaks the sample into three novel groups. An a posteriori kinematical analysis puts groups 1 and 2 in the halo, and group 3 in the thick disc. The halo and disc clusters separately follow a luminosity-metallicity relation of much weaker slope than galaxies. This property is used to propose a new criterion for distinguishing halo and disc clusters. A comparison of the distinct properties of the two halo groups with those of Galactic halo field stars indicates that the clusters of group 1 originated in the inner halo, while those of group 2 formed in the outer halo of the Galaxy. The inner halo clusters were presumably initially the most massive one, which allowed the formation of more strongly helium-enriched second generation stars, thus explaining the presence of Cepheids and of very hot horizontal-branch stars exclusively in this group. We thus conclude that the "second parameter" is linked to the environment in which globular clusters form, the inner halo favouring the formation of the most massive clusters which subsequently become more strongly self-enriched than their counterparts of the galactic outer halo and disc.

General-purpose and dedicated regimes in the use of telescopes

We propose a sociohistorical framework for better understanding the evolution in the use of telescopes. We define two regimes of use : a general-purpose (or survey) one, where the telescope governs research, and a dedicated one, in which the telescope is tailored to a specific project which includes a network of other tools. This conceptual framework is first applied to the history of the 80-cm telescope of Toulouse Observatory, which is initially anchored in a general-purpose regime linked to astrometry. After a transition in the 1930s, it is integrated in a dedicated regime centered on astrophysics. This evolution is compared to that of a very similar instrument, the 80-cm telescope of Marseille Observatory, which converts early on to the dedicated regime with the Fabry-Perot interferometer around 1910, and, after a period of idleness, is again used in the survey mode after WWII. To further validate our new concept, we apply it to the telescopes of Washburn Observatory, of Dominion Astrophysical Observatory and of Meudon Observatory. The uses of the different telescopes illustrate various combinations of the two regimes, which can be successive, simultaneous or alternating. This conceptual framework is likely to be applicable to other fields of pure and applied science.

Globular cluster content and evolutionary history of NGC147

We present the results of spectroscopic observations of eight globular cluster candidates in NGC147, a satellite dwarf elliptical galaxy of M31. Our goal is to make a complete inventory of the globular cluster system of this galaxy, determine the properties of their stellar populations, and compare these properties with those of systems of globular clusters in other dwarf galaxies. The candidates were identified on Canada-France-Hawaii telescope photographic plates. Medium resolution spectra were obtained with the SCORPIO spectrograph at the prime focus of the 6m telescope of the Russian Academy of Sciences. We were able to confirm the nature of all eight candidates, three of which (GC5, GC7, and GC10) are indeed globular clusters, and to estimate evolutionary parameters for the two brightest ones and for Hodge II. The bright clusters GC5 and GC7 appear to have metallicities ([Z/H]~ -1.5- -1.8) that are lower than the oldest stars in the galaxy. The fainter GC Hodge II has a metallicity [Z/H]=-1.1 dex, similar to that of the oldest stars in the galaxy. The clusters GC5 and GC7 have low alpha-element abundance ratios. The mean age of the globular clusters in NGC147 is 9+-1 Gyr. The frequency, S_n =6.4, and mass fraction, T=14 of globular clusters in NGC147 appear to be higher than those for NGC185 and 205. Starbursts in barred spiral galaxies. VI. HI observations and the K-band Tully-Fisher relation

This paper is primarily a study of the effect of a bar on the neutral hydrogen (HI) content of starburst and Seyfert galaxies. We also make comparisons with a sample of ``normal'' galaxies and investigate how well starburst and Seyfert galaxies follow the fundamental scaling Tully-Fisher (TF) relation defined for normal galaxies. 111 Markarian (Mrk) IRAS galaxies were observed at the Nancay radiotelescope. These measurements are complemented by data from the literature to form a sample of 105 unbarred and 113 barred Mrk IRAS galaxies. Barred galaxies have lower total and bias-corrected HI masses than unbarred galaxies, and this is true for both Mrk IRAS and normal galaxies. This robust result suggests that bars funnel the HI gas toward the center of the galaxy where it becomes molecular before forming new stars. The Mrk IRAS galaxies have higher bias-corrected HI masses than normal galaxies. They also show significant departures from the TF relation, both in the B and K bands. The most deviant points from the TF relation tend to have a strong far-infrared luminosity and a low oxygen abundance. These results suggest that a fraction of our Mrk IRAS galaxies are still in the process of formation, and that their neutral HI gas, partly of external origin, has not yet reached a stationary state.
