Momentum fraction and hard scale dependence of double parton scattering in heavy-ion collisions

In a previous work, we studied the momentum fraction and hard--scale dependence of double parton scattering (DPS) in proton--proton collisions and the resulting dependence of the effective cross section on the final--state observables. In this paper, we extend those results to heavy--ion ($pA$ and $AA$) collisions, accounting for nuclear effects in the relevant kinematic region, namely shadowing and antishadowing. In addition to modifying the longitudinal parton distributions, these effects also alter the transverse parton distribution of the nucleus, for which we propose a simple new nuclear profile. We further hypothesize that partons inside a bound nucleon are more widely separated than in a free proton. We compute the effective cross section for the available $p$Pb data, obtaining reasonable agreement, and provide predictions for future measurements at the LHC. The observed dependence of our predictions on the final state indicates that DPS in heavy--ion collisions can be used to probe the transverse profile of the free proton and the bound nucleon, primarily in $pA$ collisions, as well as the transverse structure of the nucleus, mainly in $AA$ collisions.

Dissociative associated $J/ψ$ and dimuon production in Ap ultraperipheral collisions via double parton scattering

We study the dissociative associated production of a $J/ψ$ meson and a dimuon via double parton scattering (DPS) in nucleus--proton ultraperipheral collisions. This new channel, characterized by a rapidity gap, is sensitive to the photon and gluon distributions of the proton. We derive a DPS pocket formula for this process, together with a corresponding expression for the effective cross section. Furthermore, we demonstrate the kinematic dependence of the effective cross section and present predictions for the differential DPS cross section at LHC and FCC energies.

Momentum fraction and hard scale dependence of double parton scattering

The effective cross section of double parton scattering in high-energy hadron collisions has been measured in proton--proton collisions, with significant variation among final-state observables, contrary to the idea of a universal value. Building upon our previous work, we incorporate the dependence on both the parton longitudinal momentum fraction $x$ and the process energy hard scale $μ$ into the transverse part of the double parton distributions, using a Gaussian profile. Employing the experimental data from the LHC and Tevatron experiments (covering different processes, kinematic configurations, and center--of--mass energies), we perform a global fit of the model, extracting the parameters that describe the proton structure. With this result, it becomes possible to calculate the effective cross section for others observables, and we provide predictions for future measurements at the LHC.

Predictions for dimuon production in high-energy neutrino-proton collisions using the color dipole model

Interactions of high-energy neutrinos with matter can be studied through the angular separation observed in dimuon production, an observable particularly sensitive to the transverse momentum dynamics of partons. In this work, we develop a Monte Carlo event generator based on the color dipole model, interfaced with Pythia8 for parton showering and hadronization simulations, to predict dimuon production cross sections in neutrino-proton collisions at energies relevant to IceCube and future detectors. The color dipole formalism generates larger transverse momentum compared to standard Pythia predictions, enhancing the yield of angularly separated high-energy muons.

Coherent photoproduction of light vector mesons off nuclear targets in the dipole picture

We study the coherent photoproduction of light vector mesons in Pb-Pb collisions in the framework of color dipole approach. We employ the Glauber--Gribov formalism supplemented by an effective suppression factor $R_G$ accounting for the gluon shadowing correction. We adjust the latter to reproduce the deep inelastic structure function $F_2$ (E665) and $ρ$ meson photoproduction (ALICE) data. We achieve a good description of the available data points with $R_G = 0.85$ at scale $M_ρ^2/4 = 0.15$ GeV$^2$. In addition, employing this suppression factor, we present predictions for coherent $ρ(2S)$, $ω(1S,2S)$ and $ϕ(1S,2S)$ photoproduction observables using the holographic vector meson wave functions.

Valence and sea parton correlations in double parton scattering from data

The effective cross section of double parton scattering in proton collisions has been measured by many experiments with rather different results. Motivated by this fact, we assumed that the parton correlations in the transverse plane are different whether we have valence or sea partons. With this simple approach, we were able to fit the available data and found that sea parton pairs are more correlated in the transverse plane than valence--sea parton pairs.

Exclusive photo- and electroproduction of excited light vector mesons via holographic model

In this paper, we study total and differential observables of electro- and photoproduction of light $ρ$, $ω$ and $ϕ$ mesons as functions of the center-of-mass energy of the $γp$ collision and momentum transfer squared $|t|$. The corresponding vector mesons wave functions have been computed in the framework of relativistic AdS/QCD holographic approach. A satisfactory description of all available data on ground-state $ρ(1S)$, $ω(1S)$ and $ϕ(1S)$ mesons production cross sections has been achieved in the color dipole picture. Finally, the key observables of excited $ρ(2S)$, $ω(2S)$ and $ϕ(2S)$ states production in $γ^{(*)} p$ collisions have been presented here using a common wave function formalism. This study reveals a large theoretical uncertainty coming from the modeling of the partial dipole amplitude in the nonperturbative kinematical domain. Hence, the latter could benefit from future measurements of photoproduction of the excited states.

DPS mechanism for associated $c\bar{c} l^+l^-$ production in $AA$ UPCs as a probe for photon density inside the nucleus

We discuss the associated $c\bar{c}$ and $l^+l^-$ pairs production in ultraperipheral heavy-ion collisions at high energies. Such a channel provides a novel probe for double-parton scattering (DPS) at small $x$ enabling one to probe the photon density inside the nucleus. We have derived an analog of the standard central $pp$ pocket formula and studied the kinematical dependence of the effective cross section. Taking into account both elastic and non-elastic contributions, we have shown predictions for the DPS $c\bar c l^+l^-$ production cross section differential in charm quark rapidity and dilepton invariant mass and rapidity for LHC and a future collider.

Momentum transfer squared dependence of exclusive quarkonia photoproduction in UPCs

In this paper, we study fully differential quarkonia photoproduction observables in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) as functions of momentum transfer squared. We employ the dipole picture of the QCD part of the scattering with proton and nucleus targets, with the projectile being a quasi-real photon flux emitted by an incoming hadron. We analyse such observables for ground $J/ψ$, $Υ(1S)$ and excited $ψ'$, $Υ(2S)$ states whose light-front wave functions are obtained in the framework of interquark potential model incorporating the Melosh spin transformation. Two different low-$x$ saturation models, one obtained by solving the Balitsky--Kovchegov equation with the collinearly improved kernel and the other with a Gaussian impact-parameter dependent profile, are used to estimate the underlined theoretical uncertainties of our calculations. The results for the proton target and with charmonium in the final state are in agreement with the available HERA data, while in the case of nucleus target we make predictions for $γA$ and $AA$ differential cross sections at different $W$ and at $\sqrt{s}=5.02$ TeV, respectively.

Exclusive photoproduction of excited quarkonia in ultraperipheral collisions

In this paper, we discuss the exclusive photoproduction of ground and excited states of $ψ(1S,2S)$ and $Υ(1S,2S)$ in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs). Using the potential model in order to obtain the vector meson wave function, we find a good agreement of our calculations with data from the LHC and HERA colliders for $J/ψ(1S,2S) $ and $Υ(1S)$ in $γp$ collisions. We extend the calculations to the nuclear target case applying them to $AA$ UPCs with the use of the shadowing and finite coherence length effects fitted to the data. Our results are compared to the recent LHC data, in both incoherent ($J/Ψ(1S)$ at 2.76 TeV) and coherent ($J/Ψ(1S)$ at 2.76 and 5.02 TeV) processes. We also show the corresponding predictions for the excited states, in the hope that future measurements could provide more detailed information about the vector meson wave functions and nuclear effects.

DPS mechanism for associated $c\bar c b\bar b$ production in $AA$ UPCs

We discuss the associated $c\bar{c}$ and $b\bar{b}$ quark pairs production in the double-parton scattering (DPS) process in ultraperipheral (UPCs) $AA$ collisions. We derive an analogue of the inclusive DPS pocket formula and the photon-energy dependent effective cross section considering an overlap between the hard SPS scatterings. We provide numerical predictions for the DPS cross sections for the $c\bar{c}b\bar{b}$ production process at the typical energies of $AA$ UPCs at the LHC and FCC colliders and also characterize the $A$ dependence of the total UPC DPS cross section.

Improving the Drell--Yan probe of small x partons at the LHC via an azimuthal angle cut

Predictions for Drell--Yan lepton pair production at low dilepton mass and small x at the LHC usually have a large scale dependence. This can be decreased by determining an "optimal factorization scale". In this paper, we reduce this scale by imposing a cutoff in azimuthal angle between the transverse momentum of the leptons, properly taking into account Sudakov effects. This allows one to probe the parton distributions at smaller scales eliminating most of the current theoretical uncertainty.

Probing double parton scattering via associated open charm and bottom production in ultraperipheral $pA$ collisions

In this article, we propose a novel channel for phenomenological studies of the double-parton scattering (DPS) based upon associated production of charm $c\bar{c}$ and bottom $b\bar{b}$ quark pairs in well-separated rapidity intervals in ultra-peripheral high-energy proton-nucleus collisions. This process provides a direct access to the double-gluon distribution in the proton at small-$x$ and enables one to test the factorised DPS pocket formula. We have made the corresponding theoretical predictions for the DPS contribution to this process at typical LHC energies and beyond and we compute the energy-independent (but photon momentum fraction dependent) effective cross section.

Exclusive heavy quark-pair production in ultraperipheral collisions

In this article, we study the fully differential observables of exclusive production of heavy (charm and bottom) quark pairs in high-energy ultraperipheral $pA$ and $AA$ collisions. In these processes, the nucleus $A$ serves as an efficient source of the photon flux, while the QCD interaction of the produced heavy-quark pair with the target ($p$ or $A$) proceeds via an exchange of gluons in a color singlet state, described by the gluon Wigner distribution. The corresponding predictions for differential cross sections were obtained by using the dipole $S$-matrix in the McLerran--Venugopalan saturation model with impact parameter dependence for the nucleus target, and its recent generalization, for the proton target. Prospects of experimental constraints on the gluon Wigner distribution in this class of reactions are discussed.
