Sieve in discrete groups, especially sparse

We survey the recent applications and developments of sieve methods related to discrete groups, especially in the case of infinite index subgroups of arithmetic groups.

Gaussian distribution for the divisor function and Hecke eigenvalues in arithmetic progressions

We show that, in a restricted range, the divisor function of integers in residue classes modulo a prime follows a Gaussian distribution, and a similar result for Hecke eigenvalues of classical holomorphic cusp forms. Furthermore, we obtain the joint distribution of these arithmetic functions in two related residue classes. These results follow from asymptotic evaluations of the relevant moments, and depend crucially on results on the independence of monodromy groups related to products of Kloosterman sums.

Explicit growth and expansion for SL_2

We give explicit versions of Helfgott's Growth Theorem for $\SL_2$, as well as of the Bourgain-Gamburd argument for expansion of Cayley graphs modulo primes of subgroups of $\SL_2(\Zz)$ which are Zariski-dense in $\SL_2$.

Expander graphs, gonality and variation of Galois representations

We show that families of coverings of an algebraic curve where the associated Cayley-Schreier graphs form an expander family exhibit strong forms of geometric (genus and gonality) growth. Combining this general result with finiteness statements for rational points under such conditions, we derive results concerning the variation of Galois representations in one-parameter families of abelian varieties.

Local spectral equidistribution for Siegel modular forms and applications

We study the distribution, in the space of Satake parameters, of local components of Siegel cusp forms of genus 2 and growing weight, subject to a specific weighting which allows us to apply results concerning Bessel models and a variant of Petersson's formula. We obtain for this family a quantitative local equidistribution result, and derive a number of consequences. In particular, we show that the computation of the density of low-lying zeros of the spinor L-functions (for restricted test functions) gives global evidence for a well-known conjecture of Böcherer concerning the arithmetic nature of Fourier coefficients of Siegel cusp forms.

Mod-$ϕ$ convergence

Using Fourier analysis, we study local limit theorems in weak-convergence problems. Among many applications, we discuss random matrix theory, some probabilistic models in number theory, the winding number of complex brownian motion and the classical situation of the central limit theorem, and a conjecture concerning the distribution of values of the Riemann zeta function on the critical line.

Sieve in expansion

This is a survey report for the Bourbaki Seminar (Exp. no. 1028, November 2010) concerning sieve and expanders, in particular the recent works of Bourgain, Gamburd and Sarnak introducing "sieve in orbits", and the related developments concerning expansion properties of Cayley graphs of finite linear groups.

The Chebotarev invariant of a finite group

We consider invariants of a finite group related to the number of random (independent, uniformly distributed) conjugacy classes which are required to generate it. These invariants are intuitively related to problems of Galois theory. We find group-theoretic expressions for them and investigate their values both theoretically and numerically.

Averages of Euler products, distribution of singular series and the ubiquity of Poisson distribution

We discuss in some detail the general problem of computing averages of convergent Euler products, and apply this to examples arising from singular series for the $k$-tuple conjecture and more general problems of polynomial representation of primes. We show that the singular series for the $k$-tuple conjecture have a limiting distribution when taken over $k$-tuples with (distinct) entries of growing size, and observe that its moments have a curious symmetry property. We also give conditional arguments that would imply that the number of twin primes (or more general polynomial prime patterns) in suitable short intervals are asymptotically Poisson distributed.

On modular signs

We consider some questions related to the signs of Hecke eigenvalues or Fourier coefficients of classical modular forms. One problem is to determine to what extent those signs, for suitable sets of primes, determine uniquely the modular form, and we give both individual and statistical results. The second problem, which has been considered by a number of authors, is to determine the size, in terms of the conductor and weight, of the first sign-change of Hecke eigenvalues. Here we improve significantly the recent estimate of Iwaniec, Kohnen and Sengupta.

Amplification arguments for large sieve inequalities

We present a new proof of the "arithmetic" large sieve inequality, starting from the corresponding "harmonic" inequality, which is based on an amplification idea. We show that this also adapts to give some new sieve inequality for modular forms, where Hecke eigenvalues are thought as the analogues of the reductions of integers modulo primes.

Mod-Gaussian convergence: new limit theorems in probability and number theory

We introduce a new type of convergence in probability theory, which we call ``mod-Gaussian convergence''. It is directly inspired by theorems and conjectures, in random matrix theory and number theory, concerning moments of values of characteristic polynomials or zeta functions. We study this type of convergence in detail in the framework of infinitely divisible distributions, and exhibit some unconditional occurrences in number theory, in particular for families of $L$-functions over function fields in the Katz-Sarnak framework. A similar phenomenon of ``mod-Poisson convergence'' turns out to also appear in the classical Erdős-Kác Theorem.

The large sieve, monodromy and zeta functions of algebraic curves, II: independence of the zeros

Using the sieve for Frobenius, we show that, in a certain sense, the roots of the L-functions of "most" algebraic curves over finite fields do not satisfy any non-trivial (linear or multiplicative) rational dependency relations. This can be seen as an analogue of conjectures of linear independence among ordinates of zeros of L-functions over number fields. As a corollary, we find, for "most" pairs of distinct algebraic curves over a finite field, the limiting distribution of the (suitably normalized) difference between the number of rational points over extensions of the ground field. The method of proof also emphasizes the relevance of Random Matrix models for this type of arithmetic questions. We also describe an alternative approach, which relies on Serre's theory of Frobenius tori, and we give a number of examples.

The principle of the large sieve

We describe a very general abstract form of sieve based on a large sieve inequality which generalizes both the classical sieve inequality of Montgomery (and its higher-dimensional variants), and our recent sieve for Frobenius over function fields. The general framework suggests new applications. We get some first results on the number of prime divisors of ``most'' elements of an elliptic divisibility sequence, and we develop in some detail ``probabilistic'' sieves for random walks on arithmetic groups, e.g., estimating the probability of finding a reducible characteristic polynomial at some step of a random walk on SL(n,Z). In addition to the sieve principle, the applications depend on bounds for a large sieve constant. To prove such bounds involves a variety of deep results, including Property (T) or expanding properties of Cayley graphs, and the Riemann Hypothesis over finite fields. It seems likely that this sieve can have further applications.

Analytic problems for elliptic curves

We consider some problems of analytic number theory for elliptic curves which can be considered as analogues of classical questions around the distribution of primes in arithmetic progressions to large moduli, and of the question of twin primes. This leads to some local results on the distribution of the group structures of elliptic curves defined over a prime finite field, exhibiting an interesting dichotomy for the occurence of the possible groups. (Note : This paper was initially written in 2000/01, but after a four year wait for a referee report, it is now withdrawn and deposited in the arXiv).

Exponential sums over definable subsets of finite fields

We prove some general estimates for exponential sums over subsets of finite fields which are definable in the language of rings. This generalizes both the classical exponential sum estimates over varieties over finite fields due to Weil, Deligne and others, and the result of Chatzidakis, van den Dries and Macintyre concerning the number of points of those definable sets. As a first application, there is no formula in the language of rings that defines for infinitely many primes an ``interval'' in Z/pZ that is neither bounded nor with bounded complement.
