Obstructions to reversing Lagrangian surgery in Lagrangian fillings

Given an immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling of a Legendrian knot, if the filling has a vanishing index and action double point, then through Lagrangian surgery it is possible to obtain a new immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling with one less double point and with genus increased by one. We show that it is not always possible to reverse the Lagrangian surgery: not every immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling with genus $g \geq 1$ and $p$ double points can be obtained from such a Lagrangian surgery on a filling of genus $g-1$ with $p+1$ double points. To show this, we establish the connection between the existence of an immersed, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian filling of a Legendrian $\Lambda$ that has $p$ double points with action $0$ and the existence of an embedded, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian cobordism from $p$ copies of a Hopf link to $\Lambda$. We then prove that a count of augmentations provides an obstruction to the existence of embedded, Maslov-$0$, exact Lagrangian cobordisms between Legendrian links.

Weinstein handlebodies for complements of smoothed toric divisors

We study the interactions between toric manifolds and Weinstein handlebodies. We define a partially-centered condition on a Delzant polytope, which we prove ensures that the complement of a corresponding partial smoothing of the toric divisor supports an explicit Weinstein structure. Many examples which fail this condition also fail to have Weinstein (or even exact) complement to the partially smoothed divisor. We investigate the combinatorial possibilities of Delzant polytopes that realize such Weinstein domain complements. We also develop an algorithm to construct a Weinstein handlebody diagram in Gompf standard form for the complement of such a partially smoothed toric divisor. The algorithm we develop more generally outputs a Weinstein handlebody diagram for any Weinstein 4-manifold constructed by attaching 2-handles to the disk cotangent bundle of any surface $F$, where the 2-handles are attached along the co-oriented conormal lifts of curves on $F$. We discuss how to use these diagrams to calculate invariants and provide numerous examples applying this procedure. For example, we provide Weinstein handlebody diagrams for the complements of the smooth and nodal cubics in $\mathbb{CP}^2$.

An introduction to Weinstein handlebodies for complements of smoothed toric divisors

In this article, we provide an introduction to an algorithm for constructing Weinstein handlebodies for complements of certain smoothed toric divisors using explicit coordinates and a simple example. This article also serves to welcome newcomers to Weinstein handlebody diagrams and Weinstein Kirby calculus. Finally, we include one complicated example at the end of the article to showcase the algorithm and the types of Weinstein Kirby diagrams it produces.

Arboreal singularities and loose Legendrians I

Arboreal singularities are an important class of Lagrangian singularities. They are conical, meaning that they can be understood by studying their links, which are singular Legendrian spaces in $S^{2n-1}_{\text{std}}$. Loose Legendrians are a class of Legendrian spaces which satisfy an $h$--principle, meaning that their geometric classification is in bijective correspondence with their topological types. For the particular case of the linear arboreal singularities, we show that constructable sheaves suffice to detect whether any closed set of an arboreal link is loose.

Differential algebra of cubic planar graphs

In this article we associate a combinatorial differential graded algebra to a cubic planar graph G. This algebra is defined combinatorially by counting binary sequences, which we introduce, and several explicit computations are provided. In addition, in the appendix by K. Sackel the F(q)-rational points of its graded augmentation variety are shown to coincide with (q+1)-colorings of the dual graph.

Legendrian Fronts for Affine Varieties

In this article we study Weinstein structures endowed with a Lefschetz fibration in terms of the Legendrian front projection. First we provide a systematic recipe for translating from a Weinstein Lefschetz bifibration to a Legendrian handlebody. Then we present several applications of this technique to symplectic topology. This includes the detection of flexibility and rigidity for several families of Weinstein manifolds and the existence of closed exact Lagrangian submanifolds. In addition, we prove that the Koras--Russell cubic is Stein deformation equivalent to affine complex 3-space and verify the affine parts of the algebraic mirrors of two Weinstein 4-manifolds.

Conformal symplectic geometry of cotangent bundles

We prove a version of the Arnol'd conjecture for Lagrangian submanifolds of conformal symplectic manifolds: a Lagrangian $L$ which has non-zero Morse-Novikov homology for the restriction of the Lee form $\beta$ cannot be disjoined from itself by a $C^0$-small Hamiltonian isotopy. Furthermore for generic such isotopies the number of intersection points equals at least the sum of the free Betti numbers of the Morse-Novikov homology of $\beta$. We also give a short exposition of conformal symplectic geometry, aimed at readers who are familiar with (standard) symplectic or contact geometry.

Subflexible symplectic manifolds

We introduce a class of Weinstein domains which are sublevel sets of flexible Weinstein manifolds but are not themselves flexible. These manifolds exhibit rather subtle behavior with respect to both holomorphic curve invariants and symplectic flexibility. We construct a large class of examples and prove that every flexible Weinstein manifold can be Weinstein homotoped to have a nonflexible sublevel set.

Making cobordisms symplectic

We establish an existence $h$-principle for symplectic cobordisms of dimension $2n>4$ with concave overtwisted contact boundary.

Geometric criteria for overtwistedness

We establish geometric criteria to decide whether a contact manifold is overtwisted. Starting with the original definition, we first relate the different overtwisted disks in each dimension and show that a manifold is overtwisted if the Legendrian unknot is loose. Then we characterize overtwistedness in terms of open book decompositions and provide several applications.

Amenable groups and smooth topology of 4-manifolds

A smooth five-dimensional s-cobordism becomes a smooth product if stabilized by a finite number n of $S^2xS^2x[0,1]$'s. We show that for amenable fundamental groups, the minimal n is subextensive in covers, i.e., n(cover)/index(cover) has limit 0. We focus on the notion of sweepout width, which is a bridge between 4-dimensional topology and coarse geometry.

Existence and classification of overtwisted contact structures in all dimensions

We establish a parametric extension $h$-principle for overtwisted contact structures on manifolds of all dimensions, which is the direct generalization of the $3$-dimensional result from \cite{Eli89}. It implies, in particular, that any closed manifold admits a contact structure in any given homotopy class of almost contact structures.

Constructing exact Lagrangian immersions with few double points

We establish an $h$-principle for exact Lagrangian immersions with transverse self-intersections and the minimal, or near-minimal number of double points. One corollary of our result is that any orientable closed 3-manifold admits an exact Lagrangian immersion into standard symplectic 6-space $\R^6_\st$ with exactly one transverse double point. Our construction also yields a Lagrangian embedding $S^1\times S^2\to\R^6_\st$ with vanishing Maslov class.

Closed exact Lagrangians in the symplectization of contact manifolds

For a certain class of exotic contact manifolds of dimension greater than 3, we show that there is an abundance of closed exact Lagrangians in their symplectization. All of these Lagrangians are displaceable by Hamiltonian isotopy, and many of the examples are nulhomotopic.

Lagrangian caps

We establish an $h$-principle for exact Lagrangian embeddings with concave Legendrian boundary. We prove, in particular, that in the complement of the unit ball $B$ in the standard symplectic $\R^{2n}, 2n\geq 6$, there exists an embedded Lagrangian $n$-disc transversely attached to $B$ along its Legendrian boundary.

Loose Legendrians and the plastikstufe

We show that the presence of a plastikstufe induces a certain degree of flexibility in contact manifolds of dimension 2n+1>3. More precisely, we prove that every Legendrian knot whose complement contains a "nice" plastikstufe can be destabilized (and, as a consequence, is loose). As an application, it follows in certain situations that two non-isomorphic contact structures become isomorphic after connect-summing with a manifold containing a plastikstufe.

Loose Legendrian embeddings in high dimensional contact manifolds

We give an $h$--principle type result for a class of Legendrian embeddings in contact manifolds of dimension at least $5$. These Legendrians, referred to as loose, have trivial pseudo-holomorphic invariants. We demonstrate they are classified up to Legendrian isotopy by their smooth isotopy class equipped with an almost complex framing. This result is inherently high dimensional: analogous results in dimension $3$ are false.
