Experimental confirmation of the magnetic ordering transition induced by an electronic structure change in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co$_{1/3}$TaS$_2$

We report ARPES studies combined with DFT+DMFT calculations to confirm that the magnetic ordering vector transition from \textbf{Q}=(1/2,0,0) to \textbf{Q}=(1/3,0,0) in the metallic triangular antiferromagnets Co$_{1/3\pm\epsilon}$TaS$_2$ ($\epsilon\approx$0.007) is induced by the electronic structure change in the system. The ARPES-measured Fermi surface (FS) maps of Co$_{0.325}$TaS$_2$ show two hexagonal and one circular hole-like FSs around $\Gamma$, which matches well with the triple-\textbf{Q} state by taking into account the contribution of nesting vectors occurring between Co 3$d$ and Ta 5$d$ orbitals. In the case of Co$_{0.340}$TaS$_2$, a new electron pocket around K appears and the FS geometry changes as a result of the correlation effect of Co$_4$S$_{18}$ tripods forming in the system. The magnetic susceptibility calculations based on the charge-self-consistent DFT+DMFT band structures and the random phase approximation indicate that the most stable magnetic ordering vector (1/2,0,0) split into (1/6,0,0) and (1/2,0,0), which is consistent with the magnetic phase transition around $x$=1/3 in Co$_{x}$TaS$_2$.

Tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering and large spontaneous Hall conductivity in the metallic triangular antiferromagnet Co1/3TaS2

The triangular lattice antiferromagnet (TLAF) has been the standard paradigm of frustrated magnetism for several decades. The most common magnetic ordering in insulating TLAFs is the 120 structure. However, a new triple-Q chiral ordering can emerge in metallic TLAFs, representing the short wavelength limit of magnetic skyrmion crystals. We report the metallic TLAF Co1/3TaS2 as the first example of tetrahedral triple-Q magnetic ordering with the associated topological Hall effect (non-zero σ_{xy}(H=0)). We also present a theoretical framework that describes the emergence of this magnetic ground state, which is further supported by the electronic structure measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Additionally, our measurements of the inelastic neutron scattering cross section are consistent with the calculated dynamical structure factor of the tetrahedral triple-Q state.

Semimetallic Nature and Magnetic Polarons in EuB6 Studied by Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy

Temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) was carried out on single-crystalline EuB6 samples. By measuring ARPES spectra in an extended Brillouin zone, a B 2p hole pocket centered at the X point is clearly observed, thus proving the semimetallic nature of EuB6. Below the Curie temperature TC, ARPES spectra show two B 2p bands of which separation is due to an exchange interaction between local Eu 4f and itinerant B 2p electrons. The exchange splitting becomes smaller as the temperature increases and disappears well above TC. Additionally, a diffuse structure near the Fermi level survives just above TC. Such behavior is well described by Monte Carlo simulations of a Kondo lattice model, thus supporting the formation of magnetic polarons in EuB6, which accounts for the resistivity upturn near above TC when lowering the temperature.

Electronic Structure Change of NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ in the Metal-Insulator Transition Probed by X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

The electronic structure change of NiS$_{2-x}$Se$_x$ as a function of Se concentration $x$ has been studied by Ni $L$-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The XAS spectra show distinct features in Ni $L_3$ edge, indicating whether the system is insulating or metallic. These features can be semi-quantitatively explained within the framework of the configurational interaction cluster model (CICM). In the S-rich region, relatively large charge-transfer energy ($Δ\sim 5$ eV) from ligand $p$ to Ni 3$d$ states and a little small $p$-$d$ hybridization strength ($V_{pdσ} \sim 1.1$ eV) can reproduce the experimental spectra in the CICM calculation, and vice versa in the Se-rich region. Our analysis result is consistent with the Zaanen-Sawatzky-Allen scheme that the systems in S-rich side ($x \leq$ 0.5) are a charge transfer insulator. However, it also requires that the $Δ$ value must change abruptly in spite of the small change of $x$ near $x$=0.5. As a possible microscopic origin, we propose a percolation scenario where a long range connection of Ni[(S,Se)$_2$]$_6$ octahedra with Se-Se dimers plays a key role to gap closure.

Experimental Realization of Type-II Dirac Fermions in PdTe$_2$ Superconductor

A Dirac fermion in a topological Dirac semimetal is a quadruple-degenerate quasi-particle state with a relativistic linear dispersion. Breaking either time-reversal or inversion symmetry turns this system into a Weyl semimetal that hosts double-degenerate Weyl fermion states with opposite chiralities. These two kinds of quasi-particles, although described by a relativistic Dirac equation, do not necessarily obey Lorentz invariance, allowing the existence of so-called type-II fermions. Recent theoretical discovery of type-II Weyl fermions evokes the prediction of type-II Dirac fermions in PtSe$_2$-type transition metal dichalcogenides, expecting an experimental confirmation. Here, we report an experimental realization of type-II Dirac fermions in PdTe$_2$ by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with {\it ab-initio} band calculations. Our experimental finding makes the first example that has both superconductivity and type-II Dirac fermions, which turns the topological material research into a new phase.

Controlling the 2DEG states evolution at a metal/Bi$_2$Se$_3$ interface

We have demonstrated that the evolution of the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) system at an interface of metal and the model topological insulator (TI) Bi$_2$Se$_3$ can be controlled by choosing an appropriate kind of metal elements and by applying a low temperature evaporation procedure. In particular, we have found that only topological surface states (TSSs) can exist at a Mn/Bi$_2$Se$_3$ interface, which would be useful for implementing an electric contact with surface current channels only. The existence of the TSSs alone at the interface was confirmed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Based on the ARPES and core-level x-ray photoemission spectroscopy measurements, we propose a cation intercalation model to explain our findings.

Localized Character of 4f Electrons in CeRh$_x$(x=2,3) and CeNi$_x$(x=2,5)

We have measured Ce 4f spectral weights of extremely $α$-like Ce-transition metal intermetallic compounds CeRh$_x$ (x=2,3) and CeNi$_x$ (x=2,5) by using the {\it bulk-sensitive} resonant photoemission technique at the Ce $M_5$($3d_{5/2}\to4f$)-edge. Unprecedentedly high energy resolution and longer escape depth of photoemitted electron at this photon energy enabled us to distinguish the sharp Kondo resonance tails at the Fermi level, which can be well described by the Gunnarsson-Schönhammer(GS) calculation based on the Anderson Impurity Hamiltonian. On the other hand, the itinerant 4f band description shows big discrepancies, which implies that Ce 4f electrons retain localized characters even in extremely $α$-like compounds.
