Communication-Aware Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning for Decentralized Cooperative UAV Deployment

Autonomous Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) swarms are increasingly used as rapidly deployable aerial relays and sensing platforms, yet practical deployments must operate under partial observability and intermittent peer-to-peer connectivity. We present a graph-based multi-agent reinforcement learning framework trained under centralized training with decentralized execution (CTDE): a centralized critic and global state are available only during training, while each UAV executes a shared policy using local observations and messages from nearby neighbors. Under restricted communication, neighbor relations are induced by an SNR-threshold connectivity graph. Our architecture encodes local agent state and nearby entities with an agent-entity attention module and aggregates inter-UAV messages with neighbor self-attention over a signal-quality-limited communication graph defined by a channel model. We evaluate the framework on a cooperative relay-deployment task, DroneConnect. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves an approximately 12% increase in target coverage over MAPPO under restricted communication and partial observability, while remaining competitive with a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP)-based offline upper bound with full node observability.

Real-Time Loop Closure Detection in Visual SLAM via NetVLAD and Faiss

Loop closure detection (LCD) is a core component of simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM): it identifies revisited places and enables pose-graph constraints that correct accumulated drift. Classic bag-of-words approaches such as DBoW are efficient but often degrade under appearance change and perceptual aliasing. In parallel, deep learning-based visual place recognition (VPR) descriptors (e.g., NetVLAD and Transformer-based models) offer stronger robustness, but their computational cost is often viewed as a barrier to real-time SLAM. In this paper, we empirically evaluate NetVLAD as an LCD module and compare it against DBoW on the KITTI dataset. We introduce a Fine-Grained Top-K precision-recall curve that better reflects LCD settings where a query may have zero or multiple valid matches. With Faiss-accelerated nearestneighbor search, NetVLAD achieves real-time query speed while improving accuracy and robustness over DBoW, making it a practical drop-in alternative for LCD in SLAM.

Crowdsourcing Ubiquitous Indoor Localization with Non-Cooperative Wi-Fi Ranging

Indoor localization opens the path to potentially transformative applications. Although many indoor localization methods have been proposed over the years, they remain too impractical for widespread deployment in the real world. In this paper, we introduce PeepLoc, a deployable and scalable Wi-Fi-based solution for indoor localization that relies only on pre-existing devices and infrastructure. Specifically, PeepLoc works on any mobile device with an unmodified Wi-Fi transceiver and in any indoor environment with a sufficient number of Wi-Fi access points (APs) and pedestrian traffic. At the core of PeepLoc is (a) a mechanism which allows any Wi-Fi device to obtain non-cooperative time-of-flight (ToF) to any Wi-Fi AP and (b) a novel bootstrapping mechanism that relies on pedestrian dead reckoning (PDR) and crowdsourcing to opportunistically initialize pre-existing APs as anchor points within an environment. We implement PeepLoc using commodity hardware and evaluate it extensively across 4 campus buildings. We show PeepLoc leads to a mean and median positional error of 3.41 m and 3.06 m respectively, which is superior to existing deployed indoor localization systems and is competitive with commodity GPS in outdoor environments.
