Radial profile of bottom quarks in jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

Angular correlations between heavy quark (HQ) and its tagged jet are potentially new tools to gain insight into the in-medium partonic interactions in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. In this work, we present the first theoretical study on the radial profiles of B mesons in jets in Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC. The initial production of bottom quark tagged jet in p+p is computed by SHERPA which matches the next-to-leading order matrix elements with contributions of parton shower, whereas the massive quark traversing the QGP described by a Monte Carlo model SHELL which can simultaneously simulate light and heavy flavor in-medium energy loss within the framework of Langevin evolution. In p+p collisions, we find that at lower $p_T^Q$ the radial profiles of heavy flavors in jets are sensitive to the heavy quark mass. In $0-10\%$ Pb+Pb collisions at $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, we observe an inverse modification pattern of the B mesons radial profiles in jets at $\rm 4 20$ GeV region naturally has a narrower initial distribution and consequently leads to a narrower modification pattern of radial profile; however the diffusion nature of the heavy flavor in-medium interactions will give rise to a broader modification pattern of radial profile. These two effects consequently compete and offset with each other, and the b quarks in jets benefit more from the former and suffers less diffusion effect compared to that of c quarks in jets. These findings can be tested in the future experimental measurements at the LHC to gain better understanding of the mass effect of jet quenching.

Medium modifications of girth distributions for inclusive jets and $Z^0+{\rm jet}$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

In this paper we investigate the medium modifications of girth distributions for inclusive jets and $Z^0$ tagged jets with small radius ($R=0.2$) in Pb+Pb collisions with $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV at the LHC. The partonic spectrum in the initial hard scattering of elementary collisions are obtained by a event generator POWHEG+PYTHIA, which matches the next-to-leading (NLO) matrix elements with parton showering, and energy loss of faster parton traversing in hot/dense QCD medium is calculated by Monte Carlo simulation within Higher-Twist formalism of jet quenching in heavy-ion collisions. We present the model calculations of event normalized girth distributions for inclusive jets in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV, which give nice descriptions of ALICE measurements. It is shown that the girth distributions of inclusive jets in Pb+Pb are shifted to lower girth region relative to that in p+p. Thus the nuclear modification factor of girth distributions for inclusive jets is larger than unity at small girth region, while smaller than one at large girth region. This behavior results from more soft fragments inside a jet as well as the fraction alteration of gluon/quark initiated jets in heavy-ion collisions. We further predict the girth distributions for $Z^0$ boson tagged jets in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=2.76$ TeV, and demonstrate that the medium modification on girth distributions for $Z^0$ tagged jets is less pronounced as compared to that for inclusive jets because the dominant components of $Z^0$ tagged jets are quark-initiated jets.

Electron-Ion Collider in China

Lepton scattering is an established ideal tool for studying inner structure of small particles such as nucleons as well as nuclei. As a future high energy nuclear physics project, an Electron-ion collider in China (EicC) has been proposed. It will be constructed based on an upgraded heavy-ion accelerator, High Intensity heavy-ion Accelerator Facility (HIAF) which is currently under construction, together with a new electron ring. The proposed collider will provide highly polarized electrons (with a polarization of $\sim$80%) and protons (with a polarization of $\sim$70%) with variable center of mass energies from 15 to 20 GeV and the luminosity of (2-3) $\times$ 10$^{33}$ cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$. Polarized deuterons and Helium-3, as well as unpolarized ion beams from Carbon to Uranium, will be also available at the EicC. The main foci of the EicC will be precision measurements of the structure of the nucleon in the sea quark region, including 3D tomography of nucleon; the partonic structure of nuclei and the parton interaction with the nuclear environment; the exotic states, especially those with heavy flavor quark contents. In addition, issues fundamental to understanding the origin of mass could be addressed by measurements of heavy quarkonia near-threshold production at the EicC. In order to achieve the above-mentioned physics goals, a hermetical detector system will be constructed with cutting-edge technologies. This document is the result of collective contributions and valuable inputs from experts across the globe. The EicC physics program complements the ongoing scientific programs at the Jefferson Laboratory and the future EIC project in the United States. The success of this project will also advance both nuclear and particle physics as well as accelerator and detector technology in China.

Deciphering the nature of X(3872) in heavy ion collisions

Exploring the nature of exotic multiquark candidates such as the $X(3872)$ plays a pivotal role in understanding quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Despite significant efforts, consensus on their internal structures is still lacking. As a prime example, it remains a pressing open question to decipher the $X(3872)$ state between two popular exotic configurations: a loose hadronic molecule or a compact tetraquark. We demonstrate a novel approach to help address this problem by studying the $X(3872)$ production in heavy ion collisions, where a hot fireball with ample light as well as charm (anti-)quarks is available for producing the exotics. Adopting a multiphase transport model (AMPT) for describing such collisions and implementing appropriate production mechanism of either molecule or tetraquark picture, we compute and compare a series of observables for $X(3872)$ in Pb-Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find the fireball volume plays a crucial role, leading to a 2-order-of-magnitude difference in the $X(3872)$ yield and a markedly different centrality dependence between hadronic molecules and compact tetraquarks, thus offering a unique opportunity for distinguishing the two scenarios. We also make the first prediction of $X(3872)$ elliptic flow coefficient to be tested by future experimental measurements.

Selected topics of quantum computing for nuclear physics

Nuclear physics, whose underling theory is described by quantum gauge field coupled with matter, is fundamentally important and yet is formidably challenge for simulation with classical computers. Quantum computing provides a perhaps transformative approach for studying and understanding nuclear physics. With rapid scaling-up of quantum processors as well as advances on quantum algorithms, the digital quantum simulation approach for simulating quantum gauge fields and nuclear physics has gained lots of attentions. In this review, we aim to summarize recent efforts on solving nuclear physics with quantum computers. We first discuss a formulation of nuclear physics in the language of quantum computing. In particular, we review how quantum gauge fields~(both Abelian and non-Abelian) and its coupling to matter field can be mapped and studied on a quantum computer. We then introduce related quantum algorithms for solving static properties and real-time evolution for quantum systems, and show their applications for a broad range of problems in nuclear physics, including simulation of lattice gauge field, solving nucleon and nuclear structure, quantum advantage for simulating scattering in quantum field theory, non-equilibrium dynamics, and so on. Finally, a short outlook on future work is given.

Radial profile of heavy quarks in jets in high-energy nuclear collisions

In high energy nuclear collisions, heavy flavor tagged jets are useful hard probes to study the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). In this talk, we present the first theoretical prediction of the $D^0$ meson radial distributions in jets relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV, it shows a nice agreement with the available experimental data. The in-medium jet evolution in the study is described by a Monte Carlo transport model which has been incorporated with the initial events as input provided by the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA. In such evolution process, both elastic and inelastic parton energy loss in the hot and dense medium are taken into account. Within this same simulation framework, we predict different modification patterns of the radial profile of charm and bottom quarks in jets in Pb+Pb collisions: jet quenching effect will lead the charm quarks diffuse to lager radius while lead the bottom quarks distributed closer to jet axis.

Transverse Momentum Balance and Angular Distribution of $b\bar{b}$ Dijets in Pb+Pb collisions

The productions of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets in Pb+Pb collisions have been investigated by considering the heavy quark and the light quark in-medium evolution simultaneously. The initial hard processes of inclusive b-jet and $b\bar{b}$ dijets productions are described by a next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower Monte Carlo (MC) event generator SHERPA which can be well-matched with the experimental data in p+p collisions. The framework combines the Langevin transport model to describe the evolution of the bottom quark also its collisional energy loss and the higher-twist description to consider the radiative energy loss of both the bottom and light quarks. We compare the theoretical simulation of inclusive jet and inclusive b-jet $R_{\rm AA}$ in Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV with the experimental data, and then present the theoretical simulation of the momentum balance of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV with the recent CMS data for the first time. A similar trend as that in inclusive dijets has been observed in $b\bar{b}$ dijets, the production distribution is shifted to smaller $x_J$ due to the jet quenching effect. At last, the prediction of the normalized azimuthal angle distribution of the $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$ TeV has been reported. The medium induced energy loss effect of the $b\bar{b}$ dijets will overall suppress its production, but the same side ($Δϕ\to 0$ region) suffers more energy loss than away side ($Δϕ\to π$ region), therefore lead to the suppression on the same side and the enhancement on the away side in the normalized azimuthal angle distribution in A+A collisions.

Spin Hydrodynamic Generation in the Charged Subatomic Swirl

Recently there have been significant interests in the spin hydrodynamic generation phenomenon from multiple disciplines of physics. Such phenomenon arises from global polarization effect of microscopic spin by macroscopic fluid rotation and is expected to occur in the hot quark-gluon fluid (the ``subatomic swirl'') created in relativistic nuclear collisions. This was indeed discovered in experiments which however revealed an intriguing puzzle: a polarization difference between particles and anti-particles. We suggest a novel application of a general connection between rotation and magnetic field: a magnetic field naturally arises along the fluid vorticity in the charged subatomic swirl. We establish this mechanism as a new way for generating long-lived in-medium magnetic field in heavy ion collisions. Due to its novel feature, this new magnetic field provides a nontrivial explanation to the puzzling observation of a difference in spin hydrodynamic generation for particles and anti-particles in heavy ion collisions.

Extracting the jet transport coefficient of cold nuclear matter from world data

We present the first global extraction of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter within the framework of higher-twist expansion. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive $e$-A deep inelastic scattering (DIS) and in Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in $p$-A collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in DIS. The results of this work provide the first quantitative evidence for the universality and non-trivial scale dependence of the medium transport property, similar to that for nucleon structure as encoded in the standard parton distribution functions. We expect the extracted scale dependence of $\hat q$ for cold nuclear matter can be extended to precisely identify the fundamental property of quark gluon plasma.

Magnetic Field in the Charged Subatomic Swirl

We report a novel relation between rotation and magnetic field in a charged fluid system: there is naturally a magnetic field along the direction of fluid vorticity due to the currents associated with the swirling charges. This general connection is demonstrated using a fluid vortex. Applying the idea to heavy ion collisions we propose a new mechanism for generating in-medium magnetic field with a relatively long lifetime. We estimate the magnitude of this new magnetic field in the Au-Au colliding systems across a wide span of collisional beam energy. Such a magnetic field is found to increase rapidly toward lower beam energy and could account for a significant amount of the experimentally observed global polarization difference between hyperons and anti-hyperons.

Radial distribution of charm quarks in jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Heavy flavor physics in high-energy heavy-ion collisions is a promising and active area to study the mass dependence of the "jet quenching" effects both at the RHIC and the LHC. In this talk, we present the first theoretical study on the $D^0$ meson radial distributions relative to the jet axis both in p+p and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV, where a nice agreement of our results with experimental data is observed. The in-medium parton propagations are described by a Monte Carlo transport model which uses the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA as input and includes elastic (collisional) and inelastic (radiative) in-medium interaction of heavy flavor jet. We find that, at low $D^0$ meson $p_T$, the radial distribution significantly shifts to larger radius indicating a strong diffusion effect, and the diffusion effects decrease quickly with $p_T$ ,which is consistent with the recent CMS measurements. We demonstrate that the angular deviation of charm quarks is sensitive to $D_s$ but not $\hat{q}$, which may provide new constrains on the collisional and radiative heavy quark energy loss.

Diffusion of charm quarks in jets in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

The radial distribution of $D^0$ mesons in jets probes the diffusion of charm quark relative to the jet axis and provides a new perspective to study the interaction mechanisms between heavy quarks and the medium in the nucleus-nucleus collisions. The in-medium parton propagations are described by a Monte Carlo transport model which uses the next-to-leading order (NLO) plus parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA as input and includes elastic (collisional) and inelastic (radiative) interaction for heavy quarks as well as light partons. At low $D^0$ meson $p_T$, the radial distribution significantly shifts to larger radius indicating a strong diffusion effect which is consistent with the recent experimental data. We demonstrate that the angular deviation of charm quarks declines with $p_T$ and is very sensitive to the collisional more than radiative interaction at $p_T<5$~GeV. As predictions, we present the $D^0$ meson radial distribution in jets in p+p and $0-10\%$ Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$~GeV at the RHIC, and also estimate the nuclear modification factor of charm jet in central Au+Au collisions at 200~GeV at the RHIC and central Pb+Pb collisions at $5.02$~TeV at the LHC.

A global extraction of the jet transport coefficient in cold nuclear matter

Within the framework of the generalized QCD factorization formalism, we perform the first global analysis of the jet transport coefficient ($\hat q$) for cold nuclear matter. The analysis takes into account the world data on transverse momentum broadening in semi-inclusive electron-nucleus deep inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan dilepton and heavy quarkonium production in proton-nucleus collisions, as well as the nuclear modification of the structure functions in deep inelastic scattering, comprising a total of 215 data points from 8 data sets. For the first time, we clarify quantitatively the universality and probing scale dependence of the nuclear medium property as encoded in $\hat q$. We expect that the determined parametrization of $\hat q$ in cold nuclear matter will have significant impact on precise identification of the transport property of hot dense medium created in heavy ion collisions.

Multiparticle azimuthal angular correlations in $pA$ collisions

In the Color Glass Condensate formalism, we evaluate the 3-dipole correlator up to the $\frac{1}{N_c^4}$ order with $N_c$ being the number of colors, and compute the azimuthal cumulant $c_{123}$ for 3-particle productions. In addition, we discuss the patterns appearing in the $n$-dipole formula in terms of $\frac{1}{N_c}$ expansions. This allows us to conjecture the $N_c$ scaling of $c_n\{m\}$, which is crosschecked by our calculation of $c_2\{4\}$ in the dilute limit.

The production of $b\bar{b}$ dijet in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC

We report our recent theoretical calculations for $b\bar{b}$ dijet production in high-energy nuclear collisions. The NLO+parton shower (PS) event generator SHERPA has been employed to provide the pp baseline of $b\bar{b}$ dijet production. A framework which combines Langevin transport equation to describe the evolution of heavy quarks and the higher-twist scheme to consider the inelastic energy loss of both light and heavy partons has been implemented. Within this framework, we present the theoretical result of transverse momentum imbalance $x_J=p_{T1}/p_{T2}$ both for inclusive dijet and $b\bar{b}$ dijet in Pb+Pb collision at 5.02 TeV. The energy loss of b jet would shift $x_J$ to smaller value relative to p+p reference which is consistent with the CMS data. In addition, we show the medium modification for angular correlation of $b\bar{b}$ dijet in A+A collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$~TeV. We observe a stronger suppression in small $Δϕ=|ϕ_{b1}-ϕ_{b2}|$ region where the gluon splitting processes dominate relative to large $Δϕ$ region. The difference leads to a modest suppression on near side ($Δϕ\sim 0$) and enhancement on away side ($Δϕ\simπ$).

Production of $ρ^{0}$ meson with large $p_T$ at NLO in heavy-ion collisions

Production of large transverse momentum $ρ^{0}$ meson in high-energy nuclear collisions is investigated for the first time at the next-leading-order in the QCD improved parton model. The $ρ^0$ fragmentation functions (FFs) in vacuum at any scale $Q$ are obtained, by evolving a newly developed initial parametrization of $ρ^0$ FFs at a scale $\rm Q_{0}^2=1.5\ GeV^2$ from a broken SU(3) model through NLO DGLAP equations. The numerical simulations of $p_{\rm T}$ spectra of $ρ^{0}$ meson in the elementary $\rm p+p$ collisions at NLO give a decent description of STAR $\rm p+p$ data. In $\rm A+A$ reactions the jet quenching effect is taken into account with the higher-twist approach by the medium-modified parton FFs due to gluon radiation in the quark-gluon plasma, whose space-time evolution is described by a (3+1D) hydrodynamical model. The nuclear modification factors for $ρ^{0}$ meson and its double ratio with $π^\pm$ nuclear modification in central $\rm Au+Au$ collisions at the RHIC are calculated and found to be in good agreement with STAR measurement. Predictions of $ρ^{0}$ nuclear modification and the yield ratio $ρ^0/π^0$ in central Pb+Pb at the LHC are also presented. It is shown that the ratio $ρ^0/π^0$ in central Pb+Pb will approach to that in p+p reactions when $p_{\rm T}>12$~GeV.

Nuclear suppression of $ϕ$ meson yields with large $p_T$ at the RHIC and the LHC

We calculate $ϕ$ meson transverse momentum spectra in p+p collisions as well as their nuclear suppressions in central A+A collisions both at the RHIC and the LHC in LO and NLO with the QCD-improved parton model. We have included the parton energy loss effect in hot/dense QCD medium with the effectively medium-modified $ϕ$ fragmentation functions in the higher-twist approach of jet quenching. The nuclear modification factors of $ϕ$ meson in central Au+Au collisions at the RHIC and central Pb+Pb collisions at the LHC are provided, and a nice agreement of our numerical results at NLO with the ALICE measurement is observed. Predictions of yield ratios of neutral mesons such as $ϕ/π^0$, $ϕ/η$ and $ϕ/ρ^0$ at large $p_T$ in relativistic heavy-ion collisions are also presented for the first time.

Thermodynamics of Multiple Two-body Systems with Long-range Correlation

We aim to study thermodynamics of multiple two-body systems with long-range correlation using non-extensive statistics. Long-range correlation will cause multiple systems in anomalous diffusion. We consider the influence of long-range correlation as a background noise effect on a two-body system. We solve probability and entropy equations of a two-body system to obtain the temperature and distance dependence of the non-extensive parameter. The result shows the long-range correlation changes the system's entropy and energy. The more strongly is the system bounded, the less its energy is affected by the long-range correlation. Moreover, the anomalous diffusion approaches Brown motion with increasing temperature. This will help to understand how nonlinear field affects thermodynamics of a system.
