Calibration strategies for the LAD instrument on-board LOFT

The Scientific objectives of the LOFT mission, e.g., the study of the Neutron Star equation of state and of the Strong Gravity, require accurate energy, time and flux calibration for the 500k channels of the SDD detectors, as well as the knowledge of the detector dead-time and of the detector response with respect to the incident angle of the photons. We report here the evaluations made to asses the calibration issues for the LAD instrument. The strategies for both ground and on-board calibrations, including astrophysical observations, show that the goals are achievable within the current technologies.

Effective and efficient approximations of the generalized inverse of the graph Laplacian matrix with an application to current-flow betweenness centrality

We devise methods for finding approximations of the generalized inverse of the graph Laplacian matrix, which arises in many graph-theoretic applications. Finding this matrix in its entirety involves solving a matrix inversion problem, which is resource demanding in terms of consumed time and memory and hence impractical whenever the graph is relatively large. Our approximations use only few eigenpairs of the Laplacian matrix and are parametric with respect to this number, so that the user can compromise between effectiveness and efficiency of the approximated solution. We apply the devised approximations to the problem of computing current-flow betweenness centrality on a graph. However, given the generality of the Laplacian matrix, many other applications can be sought. We experimentally demonstrate that the approximations are effective already with a constant number of eigenpairs. These few eigenpairs can be stored with a linear amount of memory in the number of nodes of the graph and, in the realistic case of sparse networks, they can be efficiently computed using one of the many methods for retrieving few eigenpairs of sparse matrices that abound in the literature.

The peculiar 2011 outburst of the black hole candidate IGR J17091-3624, a GRS 1915+105 like source?

We report on the long-term monitoring campaign of the black hole candidate IGR J17091-3624 performed with INTEGRAL and Swift during the peculiar outburst started on January 2011. We have studied the two month spectral evolution of the source in detail. Unlike the previous outbursts, the initial transition from the hard to the soft state in 2011 was not followed by the standard spectral evolution expected for a transient black hole binary. IGR J17091-3624 showed pseudo periodic flare-like events in the light curve, closely resembling those observed from GRS 1915+105. We find evidence that these phenomena are due to the same physical instability process ascribed to GRS 1915+105. Finally we speculate that the faintness of IGR J17091-3624 could be not only due to the high distance of the source but to the high inclination angle of the system as well.

The first outburst of the black hole candidate MAXI J1836-194 observed by INTEGRAL, Swift, and RXTE

MAXI J1836-194 is a transient black-hole candidate discovered in outburst by MAXI on 30 August 2011. We report on the available INTEGRAL, Swift, and RXTE observations performed in the direction of the source during this event before 55 864 MJD. Combining the broad band (0.6-200 keV) spectral and timing information obtained from these data with the results of radio observations, we show that the event displayed by MAXI J1836-194 is another example of "failed" outburst. During the first ~20 days after the onset of the event, the source underwent a transition from the canonical low/hard to the hard intermediate state, while reaching the highest X-ray flux. In the ~40 days following the peak of the outburst, the source displayed a progressive spectral hardening and a decrease of the X-ray flux, thus it entered again the low/hard state and began its return to quiescence.

On the spin-up/spin-down transitions in accreting X-ray binaries

Accreting X-Ray Binaries display a wide range of behaviours. Some of them are observed to spin up steadily, others to alternate between spin-up and spin-down states, sometimes superimposed on a longer trend of either spin up or spin down. Here we interpret this rich phenomenology within a new model of the disk-magnetosphere interaction. Our model, based on the simplest version of a purely material torque, accounts for the fact that, when a neutron star is in the propeller regime, a fraction of the ejected material does not receive enough energy to completely unbind, and hence falls back into the disk. We show that the presence of this feedback mass component causes the occurrence of multiple states available to the system, for a given, constant value of the mass accretion rate dot{M}_* from the companion star. If the angle chi of the magnetic dipole axis with respect to the perpendicular to the disk is larger than a critical value chi_crit, the system eventually settles in a cycle of spin-up/spin-down transitions for a constant value of dot{M}_* and independent of the initial conditions. No external perturbations are required to induce the torque reversals. The transition from spin up to spin down is often accompanied by a large drop in luminosity. The frequency range spanned in each cycle and the timescale for torque reversals depend on dot{M}_*, the magnetic field of the star, the magnetic colatitude chi, and the degree of elasticity regulating the magnetosphere-disk interaction. The critical angle chi_crit ranges from \~25-30 deg for a completely elastic interaction to ~40-45 deg for a totally anelastic one. For chi ~< chi_crit, cycles are no longer possible and the long-term evolution of the system is a pure spin up. We specifically illustrate our model in the cases of the X-ray binaries GX 1+4 and 4U 1626-67.
