Gelfand Triplets, Continuous and Discrete Bases and Legendre Polynomials

We consider a basis of square integrable functions on a rectangle, contained in $R^2$, constructed with Legendre polynomials, suitable, for instance, for the analogical description of images on the plane or in other fields of application of the Legendre polynomials in higher dimensions. After extending the Legendre polynomials to any arbitrary interval of the form [a,b], from its original form on [-1,1], we generalize the basis of Legendre polynomials to two dimensions. This is the first step to generalize the basis to n-dimensions. We present some mathematical constructions such as Gelfand triples appropriate on this context. ``Smoothness'' of functions on space of test functions and some other properties are revisited, as well as te continuity of generators of $su(1,1)$ on this context.

Hermite functions and Fourier series

Using normalized Hermite functions, we construct bases in the space of square integrable functions on the unit circle ($L^2(\mathcal C)$) and in $l_2(\mathbb Z)$, which are related to each other by means of the Fourier transform and the discrete Fourier transform. These relations are unitary. The construction of orthonormal bases requires the use of the Gramm--Schmidt method. On both spaces, we have provided ladder operators with the same properties as the ladder operators for the one-dimensional quantum oscillator. These operators are linear combinations of some multiplication- and differentiation-like operators that, when applied to periodic functions, preserve periodicity. Finally, we have constructed riggings for both $L^2(\mathcal C)$ and $l_2(\mathbb Z)$, so that all the mentioned operators are continuous.

Zernike functions, rigged Hilbert spaces and potential applications

We revise the symmetries of the Zernike polynomials that determine the Lie algebra su(1,1) + su(1,1). We show how they induce discrete as well continuous bases that coexist in the framework of rigged Hilbert spaces. We also discuss some other interesting properties of Zernike polynomials and Zernike functions. One of the interests of Zernike functions has been their applications in optics. Here, we suggest that operators on the spaces of Zernike functions may play a role in optical image processing.

Theory of Images and Quantum Mechanics, a common Paradigm

The Paradigms introduced in philosophy of science one century ago are shown to be quite more satisfactory of that introduced by Galileo. This is particularly evident in the physics based on Hilbert Spaces and related mathematical structures that we apply in this paper to Quantum Mechanics and to Theory of Images. An exhaustive discussion, that include the algebraic analysis of the operators acting on them, exhibits that the Hilbert Spaces -- that have fixed dimension -- must be generalized to the Rigged Hilbert Spaces that contains right inside spaces with continuous and discrete dimensions. This is the property of Rigged Hilbert Spaces that allows a consistent formal description of the physics we are considering. Theory of Quantum Mechanics and of Images are similar and the fundamental difference between them come from the definition of measure that is outside the theory of the spaces: while in Quantum Mechanics the measure is a probabilistic action, in Images it is a classical functional. Hermite functions, Lie groups and Fourier analysis

In this paper, we present recent results in harmonic analysis in the real line R and in the half-line R^+, which show a closed relation between Hermite and Laguerre functions, respectively, their symmetry groups and Fourier analysis. This can be done in terms of a unified framework based in the use of rigged Hilbert spaces. We find a relation between the universal enveloping algebra of the symmetry groups with the fractional Fourier transform. The results obtained are relevant in quantum mechanics as well as in signal processing as Fourier analysis has a close relation with signal filters. Also, we introduce some new results concerning a discretized Fourier transform on the circle. We introduce new functions on the circle constructed with the use of Hermite functions with interesting properties under Fourier transformations.

SU(2), Associated Laguerre Polynomials and Rigged Hilbert Spaces

We present a family of unitary irreducible representations of SU(2) realized in the plane, in terms of the Laguerre polynomials. These functions are similar to the spherical harmonics defined on the sphere. Relations with an space of square integrable functions defined on the plane, $L^2(\R^2)$, are analyzed. We have also enlarged this study using rigged Hilbert spaces that allow to work with iscrete and continuous bases like is the case here.

Lie algebra representations and rigged Hilbert spaces: the SO(2) case

It is well known that related with the irreducible representations of the Lie group $SO(2)$ we find a discrete basis as well a continuous one. In this paper we revisited this situation under the light of Rigged Hilbert spaces, which are the suitable framework to deal with both discrete and bases in the same context and in relation with physical applications.

Algebraic Image Processing

We propose an approach to image processing related to algebraic operators acting in the space of images. In view of the interest in the applications in optics and computer science, mathematical aspects of the paper have been simplified as much as possible. Underlying theory, related to rigged Hilbert spaces and Lie algebras, is discussed elsewhere

A constructive presentation of rigged Hilbert spaces

We construct a rigged Hilbert space for the square integrable functions on the line L^2(R) adding to the generators of the Weyl-Heisenberg algebra a new discrete operator, related to the degree of the Hermite polynomials. All together, continuous and discrete operators, constitute the generators of the projective algebra io(2. L^2(R) and the vector space of the line R are shown to be isomorphic representations of such an algebra and, as both these representations are irreducible, all operators defined on the rigged Hilbert spaces L^2(R) or R are shown to belong to the universal enveloping algebra of io(2). The procedure can be extended to orthogonal and pseudo-orthogonal spaces of arbitrary dimension by tensorialization. Circumventing all formal problems the paper proposes a kind of toy model, well defined from a mathematical point of view, of rigged Hilbert spaces where, in contrast with the Hilbert spaces, operators with different cardinality are allowed.

Quantum Physics and Signal Processing in Rigged Hilbert Spaces by means of Special Functions, Lie Algebras and Fourier and Fourier-like Transforms

Quantum Mechanics and Signal Processing in the line R, are strictly related to Fourier Transform and Weyl-Heisenberg algebra. We discuss here the addition of a new discrete variable that measures the degree of the Hermite functions and allows to obtain the projective algebra io(2). A Rigged Hilbert space is found and a new discrete basis in R obtained. The operators {O[R]} defined on R are shown to belong to the Universal Enveloping Algebra UEA[io(2)] allowing, in this way, their algebraic discussion. Introducing in the half-line a Fourier-like Transform, the procedure is extended to R^+ and can be easily generalized to R^n and to spherical reference systems.

Non-cyclic phases for neutrino oscillations in quantum field theory

We show the presence of non-cyclic phases for oscillating neutrinos in the context of quantum field theory. Such phases carry information about the non-perturbative vacuum structure associated with the field mixing. By subtracting the condensate contribution of the flavor vacuum, the previously studied quantum mechanics geometric phase is recovered.

Quantum Bases in Uq(g)

This paper is devoted to analize inside the infinitely many possible bases of Uq(g), same that can be considered "more equal then others". The element of selection has been a privileged relation with the bialgebra. A new parameter z' has been found that determines the commutation relations, independent from the z=log(q) that defines Uq(g). Both z and z' are necessary to fix the relations between the basic set and its coproducts. Three cases are particularly relevant: the analytical set with z'=z, the Lie set with Lie-like commutation relations (for z'=0) and the canonical/crystal basis with z' infinity. To simplify the exposition, we discuss in details the easy generalizable case of Uq(su(2)).

Bose Condensation and Temperature

A quantitative analysis of the process of condensation of bosons both in harmonic traps and in gases is made resorting to two ingredients only: Bose classical distribution and spectral discretness. It is shown that in order to take properly into account statistical correlations, temperature must be defined from first principles, based on Shannon entropy, and turns out to be equal to $β^{-1}$ only for $T > T_c$ where the usual results are recovered. Below $T_c$ a new critical temperature $T_d$ is found, where the specific heat exhibits a sharp spike, similar to the $λ$-peak of superfluidity.

Bosons and Environment

The role of background in bosonic quantum statistics is discussed in the frame of a new approach in terms of coherent states. Bosons are indeed detected in different physical situations where they exhibit different and apparently unconnected properties. Besides Bose gas we consider bosons in particle physics and bosons in harmonic traps. In particle physics bosons are dealt with in a context where the number of observed particles is finite: here the relevant features are the canonical commutation relations, which we shall show to be related to a Boltzmann-like distribution. A further case is Bose condensate in harmonic traps, where discrete spectrum leads us to predict, below T_c, a new critical temperature. The unified approach proposed shows that all defferences can be ascribed to the environment.

Quantum (1+1) extended Galilei algebras: from Lie bialgebras to quantum R-matrices and integrable systems

The Lie bialgebras of the (1+1) extended Galilei algebra are obtained and classified into four multiparametric families. Their quantum deformations are obtained, together with the corresponding deformed Casimir operators. For the coboundary cases quantum universal R-matrices are also given. Applications of the quantum extended Galilei algebras to classical integrable systems are explicitly developed.

Discrete Spectrum in Bose Condensation

A quantitative description of the whole process of condensation of bosons in an harmonic trap is given resorting only to Gibbs and Bose postulates, without assuming equipartition nor continuum statistics. Below Tc discrete spectrum theory predicts for the thermo-dynamical variables a behavior different from the continuum case. In particular a new critical temperature is found where the specific heat exhibits a lambda-like spike. Numerical values of the relevant quantities depend on the experimental set-up. The theory does not take into account collective effects in the ground state.

Exponential mapping for non semisimple quantum groups

The concept of universal T matrix, recently introduced by Fronsdal and Galindo in the framework of quantum groups, is here discussed as a generalization of the exponential mapping. New examples related to inhomogeneous quantum groups of physical interest are developed, the duality calculations are explicitly presented and it is found that in some cases the universal T matrix, like for Lie groups, is expressed in terms of usual exponential series.
