Probing light mediators at the MUonE experiment

The MUonE experiment, that aims to provide a precise measurement of the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon $g-2$ via elastic muon-electron scattering, has also the potential to explore the parameter space of light new physics. Exploiting the process $μ^- N \to μ^- N X$, where $N$ is the target nucleus and X is a new physics light mediator, we demonstrate that MUonE can be sensitive to new regions of parameter space for sub-GeV dark photons. In particular, thanks to its muon beam, MUonE will be able to explore uncharted parameter space regions for the $L_μ-L_τ$ model. Finally, we also find that MUonE can probe the parameter space of axion-like particles for different assumptions of the couplings to electrons, muons and photons.

Stellar Evolution confronts Axion Models

Axion production from astrophysical bodies is a topic in continuous development, because of theoretical progress in the estimate of stellar emission rates and, especially, because of improved stellar observations. We carry out a comprehensive analysis of the most informative astrophysics data, revisiting the bounds on axion couplings to photons, nucleons and electrons, and reassessing the significance of various hints of anomalous stellar energy losses. We confront the performance of various theoretical constructions in accounting for these hints, while complying with the observational limits on axion couplings. We identify the most favorable models, and the regions in the mass/couplings parameter space which are preferred by the global fit. Finally, we scrutinize the discovery potential for such models at upcoming helioscopes, namely IAXO and its scaled versions.

The muon g-2 anomaly confronts new physics in $e^\pm$ and $μ^\pm$ final states scattering

The 4.2$σ$ discrepancy between the standard model prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment $a_μ$ and the experimental result is accompanied by other anomalies. A crucial input for the prediction is the hadronic vacuum polarization $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$ inferred from $σ_{\rm had} =σ(e^+e^- \to\,$hadrons) data. However, the two most accurate determinations of $σ_{\rm had}$ from KLOE and BaBar disagree by almost 3$\,σ$. Additionally, the combined data-driven result disagrees with the most precise lattice determination of $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$ by $2.1\,σ$. We show that all these discrepancies could be accounted for by a new boson produced resonantly around the KLOE centre of mass energy and decaying promptly yielding $e^+e^-$ and $μ^+μ^-$ pairs in the final states. This gives rise to three different effects: (i) the additional $e^+e^-$ events will affect the KLOE luminosity determination based on measurements of the Bhabha cross section, and in turn the inferred value of $σ_{\rm had}$; (ii) the additional $μ^+μ^-$ events will affect the determination of $σ_{\rm had}$ via the (luminosity independent) measurement of the ratio of $π^+π^-γ$ versus $μ^+μ^-γ$ events; (iii) loops involving the new boson would contribute directly to the prediction for $a_μ$. We discuss in detail this possibility, and we present a simple model that can reconcile the KLOE and BaBar results for $σ_{\rm had}$, the data-driven and the lattice determinations of $a_μ^{\rm HVP}$, the predicted and measured values of $a_μ$, while complying with all phenomenological constraints.

Invisible decays of axion-like particles: constraints and prospects

Axion-like particles (ALPs) can provide a portal to new states of a dark sector. We study the phenomenology of this portal when the ALP mainly decays invisibly, while its interaction with the standard model sector proceeds essentially via its coupling to electrons and/or photons. We re-analyse existing limits from various collider and beam dump experiments, including in particular ALP production via electron/positron interactions, in addition to the usual production through ALP-photon coupling. We further discuss the interplay between these limits and the intriguing possibility of explaining simultaneously the muon and electron magnetic moment anomalies. Finally, we illustrate the prospects of ALP searches at the LNF positron fixed-target experiment PADME, and the future reach of an upgraded experimental setup.

Exact accidental U(1) symmetries for the axion

We study a class of gauge groups that can automatically yield a perturbatively exact Peccei-Quinn symmetry, and we outline a model in which the axion quality problem is solved at all operator dimensions. Gauge groups belonging to this class can also enforce and protect accidental symmetries of the clockwork type, and we present a toy model where an `invisible' axion arises from a single breaking of the gauge and global symmetries.

Selective enhancement of the QCD axion couplings

We present a mechanism wherein the QCD axion coupling to nucleons, photons, or electrons, can be enhanced selectively without increasing the axion mass. We focus in particular on the axion-nucleon couplings, that are generally considered to be largely model-independent, and we show how nucleophilic axion models can be constructed. We discuss the implications of a nucleophilic axion for astrophysics, cosmology and laboratory searches. We present a model with enhanced axion couplings to nucleons and photons that can provide an excellent fit to the anomalous emission of hard X-rays recently observed from a group of nearby neutron stars, and we argue that such a scenario can be thoroughly tested in forthcoming axion-search experiments.

New production channels for light dark matter in hadronic showers

Hadronic showers transfer a relevant amount of their energy to electromagnetic subshowers. We show that the generation of "secondary" dark photons in these sub-showers is significant and typically dominates the production at low dark photon masses. The resulting dark photons are however substantially less energetic than the ones originating from mesons decay. We illustrate this point both semi-analytically and through Monte Carlo simulations. Existing limits on vector-mediator scenarios for light dark matter are updated with the inclusion of the new production processes.

Solar axions cannot explain the XENON1T excess

We argue that the interpretation in terms of solar axions of the recent XENON1T excess is not tenable when confronted with astrophysical observations of stellar evolution. We discuss the reasons why the emission of a flux of solar axions sufficiently intense to explain the anomalous data would radically alter the distribution of certain type of stars in the color-magnitude diagram in first place, and would also clash with a certain number of other astrophysical observables. Quantitatively, the significance of the discrepancy ranges from $3.3σ$ for the rate of period change of pulsating White Dwarfs, and exceedes $19σ$ for the $R$-parameter and for $M_{I,{\rm TRGB}}$.

Covert symmetries in the neutrino mass matrix

The flavour neutrino puzzle is often addressed by considering neutrino mass matrices $m$ with a certain number of vanishing entries ($m_{ij}=0$ for some values of the indices), since a reduction in the number of free parameters increases the predictive power. Symmetries that can enforce textures zero can also enforce a more general type of conditions $f(m_{ij})=0$ with $f$ some function of the matrix elements $m_{ij}$. In this case $m$ can have all entries non-vanishing with no reduction in its predictive power. We classify all generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetries which, in the presence of two leptonic Higgs doublets, can reduce the number of independent high-energy parameters of type-I seesaw to the minimum number compatible with non-vanishing neutrino mixings and CP violation. These symmetries are broken above the scale where the effective operator is generated and can thus remain covert, in the sense that no explicit evidence of the symmetry can be read off the neutrino mass matrix, and different symmetries can give rise to the same low-energy structure. We find that only two cases are viable: one yields a structure with two zero-textures already considered in the literature, the other has no zero-textures and has never been considered before. It predicts normal ordering, a lightest neutrino mass $ \sim 10$ meV, a Dirac phase $δ\sim \frac{3π}{2}$ and definite values for the Majorana phases.

Axion-electron decoupling in nucleophobic axion models

The strongest upper bounds on the axion mass come from astrophysical observations like the neutrino burst duration of SN1987A, which depends on the axion couplings to nucleons, or the white-dwarf cooling rates and red-giant evolution, which involve the axion-electron coupling. It has been recently argued that in variants of DFSZ models with generation-dependent Peccei-Quinn charges an approximate axion-nucleon decoupling can occur, strongly relaxing the SN1987A bound. However, as in standard DFSZ models, the axion remains in general coupled to electrons, unless an ad hoc cancellation is engineered. Here we show that axion-electron decoupling can be implemented without extra tunings in DFSZ-like models with three Higgs doublets. Remarkably, the numerical value of the quark mass ratio $m_u/m_d\sim 1/2$ is crucial to open up this possibility.

$U(1)$ flavour symmetries as Peccei-Quinn symmetries

We investigate to what extent a generic, generation-dependent $U(1)$ symmetry acting on the quark Yukawa operators can reduce the number of free parameters by forcing some entries in the Yukawa matrices to vanish. The maximal reduction compatible with CP violation yields nine real parameters and one phase, which matches the number of physical observables, implying that such models have no free parameters. We derive a set of results: (i) the only possible structures have the form $M_4 \oplus M_5$, where the subscripts indicate the number of real parameters in the Yukawa matrices, (ii) there are only two inequivalent Yukawa structures, each one giving rise to six different models depending on quark flavour assignments, (iii) the $U(1)$ symmetries that generate these textures all have a QCD anomaly, and hence are Peccei-Quinn symmetries, reinforcing the idea of a possible connection between the quark flavour puzzle and the axion solution to the strong CP problem, (iv) in some cases the contributions to the QCD anomaly of two generations cancels out, and this opens the possibility that the axion coupling to nucleons could be strongly suppressed. Flavour-violating axion couplings to quarks are completely fixed, up to the axion decay constant, providing a non-trivial complementarity between low-energy flavour-violating processes and standard axion searches.

Astrophobic Axions

We propose a class of axion models with generation dependent Peccei-Quinn charges for the known fermions that allow to suppress the axion couplings to nucleons and electrons. Astrophysical limits are thus relaxed, allowing for axion masses up to ${\cal O}(0.1)$ eV. The axion-photon coupling remains instead sizeable, so that next generation helioscopes will be able to probe this scenario. Astrophobia unavoidably implies flavor violating axion couplings, so that experimental limits on flavour-violating processes can provide complementary probes. The astrophobic axion can be a viable dark matter candidate in the heavy mass window, and can also account for anomalous energy loss in stars.

Resonant production of dark photons in positron beam dump experiments

Positrons beam dump experiments have unique features to search for very narrow resonances coupled superweakly to $e^+ e^-$ pairs. Due to the continue loss of energy from soft photon bremsstrahlung, in the first few radiation lengths of the dump a positron beam can continuously scan for resonant production of new resonances via $e^+$ annihilation off an atomic $e^-$ in the target. In the case of a dark photon $A'$ kinetically mixed with the photon, this production mode is of first order in the electromagnetic coupling $α$, and thus parametrically enhanced with respect to the $O(α^2)$ $e^+e^- \to γA'$ production mode and to the $O(α^3)$ $A'$ bremsstrahlung in $e^--$nucleon scattering so far considered. If the lifetime is sufficiently long to allow the $A'$ to exit the dump, $A' \to e^+e^-$ decays could be easily detected and distinguished from backgrounds. We explore the foreseeable sensitivity of the Frascati PADME experiment in searching with this technique for the $17\,$MeV dark photon invoked to explain the $^8$Be anomaly in nuclear transitions.

A cosmological pathway to testable leptogenesis

Leptogenesis could have occurred at temperatures much lower than generally thought, if the cosmological history of the Universe underwent a period of accelerated expansion, as is predicted for example in a class of scalar-tensor theories of gravitation. We discuss how non-standard cosmologies can open new pathways for low scale leptogenesis. Within these scenarios, direct tests of leptogenesis could also provide information on the very early times Universe evolution, corresponding to temperatures larger than the TeV.

Window for preferred axion models

We discuss phenomenological criteria for defining "axion windows", namely regions in the parameter space of the axion-photon coupling where realistic models live. Currently, the boundaries of this region depend on somewhat arbitrary criteria, and it would be highly desirable to specify them in terms of precise phenomenological requirements. We first focus on hadronic axion models within post-inflationary scenarios, in which the initial abundance of the new vectorlike quarks $Q$ is thermal. We classify their representations $R_Q$ by requiring that $i)$ the $Q$ are sufficiently short lived to avoid issues with long-lived strongly interacting relics, $ii)$ the theory remains weakly coupled up to the Planck scale. The more general case of multiple $R_Q$ is also studied, and the absolute upper and lower bounds on the axion-photon coupling as a function of the axion mass is identified. Pre-inflationary scenarios in which the axion decay constant remains bounded as $f_a\leq 5\cdot 10^{11}\,$GeV allow for axion-photon couplings only about 20% larger. Realistic Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky type of axion models also remain encompassed within the hadronic axion window. Some mechanisms that can allow to enhance the axion-photon coupling to values sizeably above the preferred window are discussed.

Accidental Peccei-Quinn symmetry protected to arbitrary order

A $SU(N)_L\times SU(N)_R$ gauge theory for a scalar multiplet $Y$ transforming in the bi-fundamental representation $(N,\bar N)$ preserves, for $N>4$, an accidental $U(1)$ symmetry firstly broken at operator dimension $N$. Two configurations are possible for the vacuum expectation value of $Y$, which correspond to the (maximal) little groups $\mathcal{H}_s=SU(N)_{L+R}$ and $\mathcal{H}_h=SU(N-1)_L\times SU(N-1)_R\times U(1)_{L+R}$. In the first case the accidental $U(1)$ gets also broken, yielding a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson with mass suppression controlled by $N$, while in the second case a global $U(1)$ remains unbroken. The strong CP problem is solved by coupling $Y$ to new fermions carrying color. The first case allows for a Peccei-Quinn solution with $U(1)_{PQ}$ protected up to order $N$ by the gauge symmetry. In the second case $U(1)$ can get broken by condensates of the new strong dynamics, resulting in a composite axion. By coupling $Y$ to fermions carrying only weak isospin, models for axion-like particles can be constructed.

Redefining the Axion Window

A major goal of axion searches is to reach inside the parameter space region of realistic axion models. Currently, the boundaries of this region depend on somewhat arbitrary criteria, and it would be desirable to specify them in terms of precise phenomenological requirements. We consider hadronic axion models and classify the representations $R_Q$ of the new heavy quarks $Q$. By requiring that $i)$ the $Q$ are sufficiently short lived to avoid issues with long lived strongly interacting relics, $ii)$ no Landau poles are induced below the Planck scale, fifteen cases are selected, which define a phenomenologically preferred axion window bounded by a maximum (minimum) value of the axion-photon coupling about twice (four times) larger than commonly assumed. Allowing for more than one $R_Q$, larger couplings, as well as complete axion-photon decoupling, become possible.

Dark Matter from the vector of SO(10)

SO(10) grand unified theories can ensure the stability of new particles in terms of the gauge group structure itself, and in this respect are well suited to accommodate dark matter (DM) candidates in the form of new stable massive particles. We introduce new fermions in two vector 10 representations. When SO(10) is broken to the standard model by a minimal 45 + 126 + 10 scalar sector with $SU(3)_C \otimes SU(2)_L \otimes SU(2)_R\otimes U(1)_{B-L}$ as intermediate symmetry group, the resulting lightest new states are two Dirac fermions corresponding to combinations of the neutral members of the $SU(2)_L$ doublets in the 10's, which get splitted in mass by loop corrections involving $W_R$. The resulting lighter mass eigenstate is stable, and has only non-diagonal $Z_{L,R}$ neutral current couplings to the heavier neutral state. Direct detection searches are evaded if the mass splitting is sufficiently large to suppress kinematically inelastic light-to-heavy scatterings. By requiring that this condition is satisfied, we obtain the upper limit $M_{W_R} \lesssim 25$ TeV.
