Sharp estimate on the inner distance in planar domains

We show that the inner distance inside a bounded planar domain is at most the one-dimensional Hausdorff measure of the boundary of the domain. We prove this sharp result by establishing an improved Painlevé length estimate for connected sets and by using the metric removability of totally disconnected sets, proven by Kalmykov, Kovalev, and Rajala. We also give a totally disconnected example showing that for general sets the Painlevé length bound $κ(E) \leπ\mathcal{H}^1(E)$ is sharp.

Quasi-continuous vector fields on RCD spaces

In the existing language for tensor calculus on RCD spaces, tensor fields are only defined m-a.e.. In this paper we introduce the concept of tensor field defined `2-capacity-a.e.' and discuss in which sense Sobolev vector fields have a 2-capacity-a.e. uniquely defined quasi-continuous representative.

Direct and inverse limits of normed modules

The aim of this note is to study existence and main properties of direct and inverse limits in the category of normed $L^0$-modules (in the sense of Gigli) over a metric measure space.

Infinitesimal Hilbertianity of locally CAT($κ$)-spaces

We show that, given a metric space $(Y,d)$ of curvature bounded from above in the sense of Alexandrov, and a positive Radon measure $μ$ on $Y$ giving finite mass to bounded sets, the resulting metric measure space $(Y,d,μ)$ is infinitesimally Hilbertian, i.e. the Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(Y,d,μ)$ is a Hilbert space. The result is obtained by constructing an isometric embedding of the `abstract and analytical' space of derivations into the `concrete and geometrical' bundle whose fibre at $x\in Y$ is the tangent cone at $x$ of $Y$. The conclusion then follows from the fact that for every $x\in Y$ such a cone is a CAT(0)-space and, as such, has a Hilbert-like structure.

Infinitesimal Hilbertianity of weighted Riemannian manifolds

The main result of this paper is the following: any `weighted' Riemannian manifold $(M,g,μ)$ - i.e. endowed with a generic non-negative Radon measure $μ$ - is `infinitesimally Hilbertian', which means that its associated Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(M,g,μ)$ is a Hilbert space. We actually prove a stronger result: the abstract tangent module (à la Gigli) associated to any weighted reversible Finsler manifold $(M,F,μ)$ can be isometrically embedded into the space of all measurable sections of the tangent bundle of $M$ that are $2$-integrable with respect to $μ$.

Differential of metric valued Sobolev maps

We introduce a notion of differential of a Sobolev map between metric spaces. The differential is given in the framework of tangent and cotangent modules of metric measure spaces, developed by the first author. We prove that our notion is consistent with Kirchheim's metric differential when the source is a Euclidean space, and with the abstract differential provided by the first author when the target is $\mathbb{R}$.

The Serre-Swan theorem for normed modules

The aim of this note is to analyse the structure of the $L^0$-normed $L^0$-modules over a metric measure space. These are a tool that has been introduced by N. Gigli to develop a differential calculus on spaces verifying the Riemannian Curvature Dimension condition. More precisely, we discuss under which conditions an $L^0$-normed $L^0$-module can be viewed as the space of sections of a suitable measurable Banach bundle and in which sense such correspondence can be actually made into an equivalence of categories.

Behaviour of the reference measure on $\sf RCD$ spaces under charts

Mondino and Naber recently proved that finite dimensional $\sf RCD$ spaces are rectifiable. Here we show that the push-forward of the reference measure under the charts built by them is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This result, read in conjunction with another recent work of us, has relevant implications on the structure of tangent spaces to $\sf RCD$ spaces. A key tool that we use is a recent paper by De Philippis-Rindler about the structure of measures on the Euclidean space.

Equivalence of two different notions of tangent bundle on rectifiable metric measure spaces

We prove that for a suitable class of metric measure spaces, the abstract notion of tangent module as defined by the first author can be isometrically identified with the space of $L^2$-sections of the `Gromov-Hausdorff tangent bundle'. The class of spaces $({\rm X},{\sf d},{\mathfrak m})$ we consider are PI spaces that for every $\varepsilon>0$ admit a countable collection of Borel sets $(U_i)$ covering ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ ${\rm X}$ and corresponding $(1+\varepsilon)$-biLipschitz maps $φ_i:U_i\to{\mathbb R}^{k_i}$ such that $(φ_i)_*{\mathfrak m}\lower3pt\hbox{$|_{U_i}$}\ll\mathcal L^{k_i}$. This class is known to contain ${\sf RCD}^*(K,N)$ spaces. Part of the work we carry out is that to give a meaning to notion of $L^2$-sections of the Gromov-Hausdorff tangent bundle, in particular explaining what it means to have a measurable map assigning to ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ $x\in {\rm X}$ an element of the pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the blow-up of ${\rm X}$ at $x$.
