Orbital Ordering in the Charge Density Wave Phases of BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We use resonant X-ray scattering at the nickel L$_{2,3}$ edges to investigate the interplay between orbital degrees of freedom and charge density waves (CDW) in the superconductor BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$. Both the incommensurate and commensurate CDWs in this system exhibit strong resonant enhancement with distinct energy and polarization dependencies, indicative of orbital ordering. Azimuthal-angle-dependent measurements reveal a lowering of the local Ni site symmetry, consistent with monoclinic or lower point group symmetry. The scattering signatures of both CDWs are dominated by contributions from Ni $d_{xz,yz}$ orbitals, with similar orbital character despite their distinct wave vectors. These findings point to a shared orbital-driven formation mechanism and provide new insight into the symmetry breaking and orbital/nematic fluctuations in the high-temperature regime of the superconductor BaNi$_2$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$.

Spin-carrier coupling induced ferromagnetism and giant resistivity peak in EuCd$_2$P$_2$

EuCd$_2$P$_2$ is notable for its unconventional transport: upon cooling the metallic resistivity changes slope and begins to increase, ultimately 100-fold, before returning to its metallic value. Surprisingly, this giant peak occurs at 18K, well above the Néel temperature ($T_N$) of 11.5K. Using a suite of sensitive probes of magnetism, including resonant x-ray scattering and magneto-optical polarimetry, we have discovered that ferromagnetic order onsets above $T_N$ in the temperature range of the resistivity peak. The observation of inverted hysteresis in this regime shows that ferromagnetism is promoted by coupling of localized spins and itinerant carriers. The resulting carrier localization is confirmed by optical conductivity measurements.

Antiferromagnetic order in Co-doped Fe$_5$GeTe$_2$ probed by resonant magnetic x-ray scattering

The quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals magnet Fe$_{5-δ}$GeTe$_2$ has emerged as a promising platform for electronic and spintronic functionalities at room temperature, owing to its large ferromagnetic ordering temperature $T_{\text{C}}$ $\sim$ 315 K. Interestingly, by cobalt (Co) substitution of iron in F5GT, $i.e.$ $({\text{Fe}}_{1-x}{\text{Co}}_x)_{5-δ}{\text{GeTe}}_2$ (Co-F5GT), not only can its magnetic transition temperature be further enhanced, but the magnetic and structural ground states can also be tuned. Specifically, an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order is induced beyond the Co doping level $x \ge 0.4$. Here, we investigate the magnetic properties of a Co-F5GT single crystal at $x = 0.45(1)$, by utilizing the element specific, resonant magnetic x-ray scattering technique. Our study reveals an A-type, Ising-like AFM ground state, with a transition temperature $T_{\text{N}}$ $\sim$ 340 K. In addition, our work unveils an important contribution from Co magnetic moments to the magnetic order. The application of the in-plane magnetic fields gradually polarize the spin moments along the field direction, but without inducing incommensurate spin texture(s).

Discovery of an electronic crystal in a cuprate Mott insulator

Copper oxide high temperature superconductors universally exhibit multiple forms of electronically ordered phases that break the native translational symmetry of the CuO2 planes. The interplay between these orders and the superconducting ground state, as well as how they arise through doping a Mott insulator, is essential to decode the mechanisms of high-temperature superconductivity. Over the years, various forms of electronic liquid crystal phases including charge/spin stripes and incommensurate charge-density-waves (CDWs) were found to emerge out of a correlated metallic ground state in underdoped cuprates. Early theoretical studies also predicted the emergence of a Coulomb-frustrated 'charge crystal' phase in the very lightly-doped, insulating limit of the CuO2 planes. Here, we use resonant X-ray scattering, electron transport, and muon spin rotation measurements to fully resolve the electronic and magnetic ground state and search for signatures of charge order in very lightly hole-doped cuprates from the RBa2Cu3O7-d family (RBCO; R: Y or rare earth). X-ray scattering data from RBCO films reveal a breaking of translational symmetry more pervasive than was previously known, extending down to the Mott limit. The ordering vector of this charge crystal state is linearly connected to the charge-density-waves of underdoped RBCO, suggesting that the former phase is a precursor to the latter as hole doping is increased. Most importantly, the coexistence of charge and spin order in RBCO suggests that this electronic symmetry-breaking state is common to the CuO2 planes in the very lightly-doped regime. These findings bridge the gap between the Mott insulating state and the underdoped metallic state and underscore the prominent role of Coulomb-frustrated electronic phase separation among all cuprates.

Incipient antiferromagnetism in the Eu-doped topological insulator Bi$_2$Te$_3$

Rare earth ions typically exhibit larger magnetic moments than transition metal ions and thus promise the opening of a wider exchange gap in the Dirac surface states of topological insulators. Yet, in a recent photoemission study of Eu-doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ films, the spectra remained gapless down to $T = 20\;\text{K}$. Here, we scrutinize whether the conditions for a substantial gap formation in this system are present by combining spectroscopic and bulk characterization methods with theoretical calculations. For all studied Eu doping concentrations, our atomic multiplet analysis of the $M_{4,5}$ x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra reveals a Eu$^{2+}$ valence and confirms a large magnetic moment, consistent with a $4f^7 \; {^8}S_{7/2}$ ground state. At temperatures below $10\;\text{K}$, bulk magnetometry indicates the onset of antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering. This is in good agreement with density functional theory, which predicts AFM interactions between the Eu impurities. Our results support the notion that antiferromagnetism can coexist with topological surface states in rare-earth doped Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and call for spectroscopic studies in the kelvin range to look for novel quantum phenomena such as the quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Imprint of charge and oxygen orders on Dy ions in DyBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ thin films probed by resonant x-ray scattering

We used resonant elastic x-ray scattering at the Cu $L_3$ and Dy $M_5$ edges to investigate charge order in thin films of underdoped DyBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ (DyBCO) epitaxially grown on NdGaO$_3$ (110) substrates. The films show an orthorhombic crystal structure with short-range ortho-II oxygen order in the charge-reservoir layers. At the Dy $M_5$ edge we observe diffraction peaks with the same planar wavevectors as those of the two-dimensional charge density wave in the CuO$_2$ planes and of the ortho-II oxygen order, indicating the formation of induced ordered states on the rare-earth sublattice. The intensity of the resonant diffraction peaks exhibits a non-monotonic dependence on an external magnetic field. Model calculations on the modulation of the crystalline electric field at the Dy sites by charge and oxygen order capture the salient features of the magnetic field, temperature, and photon energy dependence of the scattering intensity.

Resonant X-ray scattering study of diffuse magnetic scattering from the topological semimetals EuCd$_2$As$_2$ and EuCd$_2$Sb$_2$

We have investigated the magnetic correlations in the candidate Weyl semimetals EuCd$_2Pn_2$, ($Pn$=As, Sb) by resonant elastic X-ray scattering (REXS) at the Eu$^{2+}$ $M_5$ edge. The temperature and field dependence of the diffuse scattering of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ provide direct evidence that the Eu moments exhibit slow ferromagnetic correlations well above the Néel temperature. By contrast, the diffuse scattering in the paramagnetic phase of isostructural EuCd$_2$Sb$_2$ is at least an order of magnitude weaker. The FM correlations present in the paramagnetic phase of EuCd$_2$As$_2$ could create short-lived Weyl nodes.

Evolution of charge order topology across a magnetic phase transition in cuprate superconductors

Charge order is now accepted as an integral constituent of cuprate high-temperature superconductors, one that is intimately related to other instabilities in the phase diagram including antiferromagnetism and superconductivity. Unlike nesting-induced Peierls-like density waves, the charge correlations in the CuO2 planes have been predicted to display a rich momentum space topology depending on the detailed fermiology of the system. However, to date charge order has only been observed along the high-symmetry Cu-O bond directions. Here, using resonant soft X-ray scattering, we investigate the evolution of the full momentum space topology of charge correlations in Ln2CuO4 (Ln=Nd, Pr) as a function of intrinsic electron doping. We report that, upon electron doping the parent Mott insulator, charge correlations first emerge in a hitherto-unobserved form, with full (Cinf) rotational symmetry in momentum-space. At higher doping levels, the orientation of charge correlations is sharply locked to the Cu-O bond high-symmetry directions, restoring a more conventional bidirectional charge order with enhanced correlation lengths. Through charge susceptibility calculations, we closely reproduce the drastic evolution in the topology of charge correlations across an antiferromagnetic quantum phase transition, highlighting the interplay between spin and charge degrees of freedom in electron-doped cuprates. Finally, using the established link between charge correlations and the underlying fermiology, we propose a revised phase diagram of Ln2CuO4 with a superconducting region extending toward the Mott limit.

Persistent low-energy phonon broadening near the charge order $q$-vector in bilayer cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$

We report a persistent low-energy phonon broadening around $q_{B} \sim 0.28$ r.l.u. along the Cu-O bond direction in the high-$T_c$ cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ (Bi-2212). We show that such broadening exists both inside and outside the conventional charge density wave (CDW) phase, via temperature dependent measurements in both underdoped and heavily overdoped samples. Combining inelastic hard x-ray scattering, diffuse scattering, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and resonant soft x-ray scattering at the Cu $L_3$-edge, we exclude the presence of a CDW in the heavily overdoped Bi-2212 similar to that observed in the underdoped systems. Finally, we discuss the origin of such anisotropic low-energy phonon broadening, and its potential precursory role to the CDW phase in the underdoped region.

Opening a nodal gap by fluctuating spin-density-wave in lightly doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

We investigate whether the spin or charge degrees of freedom are responsible for the nodal gap in underdoped cuprates by performing inelastic neutron scattering and x-ray diffraction measurements on La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, which is on the edge of the antiferromagnetic phase. We found that fluctuating incommensurate spin-density-wave (SDW) with a the bottom part of an hourglass dispersion exists even in this magnetic sample. The strongest component of these fluctuations diminishes at the same temperature where the nodal gap opens. X-ray scattering measurements on the same crystal show no signature of charge-density-wave (CDW). Therefore, we suggest that the nodal gap in the electronic band of this cuprate opens due to fluctuating SDW with no contribution from CDW.

Magnetic anisotropy in surface-supported single-ion lanthanide complexes

Single-ion lanthanide-organic complexes can provide stable magnetic moments with well-defined orientation for spintronic applications on the atomic level. Here, we show by a combined experimental approach of scanning tunneling microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy that dysprosium-tris(1,1,1-trifluoro-4-(2-thienyl)-2,4butanedionate) (Dy(tta)$_3$) complexes deposited on a Au(111) surface undergo a molecular distortion, resulting in distinct crystal field symmetry imposed on the Dy ion. This leads to an easy-axis magnetization direction in the ligand plane. Furthermore, we show that tunneling electrons hardly couple to the spin excitations, which we ascribe to the shielded nature of the $4f$ electrons.

Quasiparticle interference of heavy fermions in resonant X-ray scattering

Resonant X-ray scattering (RXS) has recently become an increasingly important tool for the study of ordering phenomena in correlated electron systems. Yet, the interpretation of the RXS experiments remains theoretically challenging due to the complexity of the RXS cross-section. Central to this debate is the recent proposal that impurity-induced Friedel oscillations, akin to quasiparticle interference signals observed with the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), can lead to scattering peaks in the RXS experiments. The possibility that quasiparticle properties can be probed in RXS measurements opens up a new avenue to study the bulk band structure of materials with the orbital and element selectivity provided by RXS. Here, we test these ideas by combining RXS and STM measurements of the heavy fermion compound CeMIn$_5$ (M = Co, Rh). Temperature and doping dependent RXS measurements at the Ce-M$_4$ edge show a broad scattering enhancement that correlates with the appearance of heavy f-electron bands in these compounds. The scattering enhancement is consistent with the measured quasiparticle interference signal in the STM measurements, indicating that quasiparticle interference can be probed through the momentum distribution of RXS signals. Overall, our experiments demonstrate new opportunities for studies of correlated electronic systems using the RXS technique.

Long range antiferromagnetic order of formally non-magnetic Eu$^{3+}$ Van Vleck ions observed in multiferroic Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_3$

We report on resonant magnetic x-ray scattering and absorption spectroscopy studies of exchange-coupled antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu$^{3+}$ magnetic moments in multiferroic Eu$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnO$_3$ in the absence of an external magnetic field. The observed resonant spectrum is characteristic of a magnetically ordered $^7F_1$ state that mirrors the Mn magnetic ordering, due to exchange coupling between the Eu $4f$ and Mn $3d$ spins. This is the first observation of long range magnetic order generated by exchange coupling of magnetic moments of formally non-magnetic Van Vleck ions, which is a step further towards the realization of exotic phases induced by exchange coupling in systems entirely composed of non-magnetic ions.

Ubiquitous Interplay between Charge Ordering and High-Temperature Superconductivity in Cuprates

Besides superconductivity, copper-oxide high temperature superconductors are susceptible to other types of ordering. We use scanning tunneling microscopy and resonant elastic x-ray scattering measurements to establish the formation of charge ordering in the high-temperature superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. Depending on the hole concentration, the charge ordering in this system occurs with the same period as those found in Y-based or La-based cuprates, and displays the analogous competition with superconductivity. These results indicate the similarity of charge organization competing with superconductivity across different families of cuprates. We observe this charge ordering to leave a distinct electron-hole asymmetric signature (and a broad resonance centered at +20 meV) in spectroscopic measurements, thereby indicating that it is likely related to the organization of holes in a doped Mott insulator.

Phase diagram of charge order in La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 from resonant soft x-ray diffraction

Resonant soft x-ray scattering experiments with photon energies near the O K and the Cu L3 edge on the system La1.8-xEu0.2SrxCuO4 for 0.1 <= x <= 0.15 are presented. A phase diagram for stripe-like charge ordering is obtained together with information on the structural transition into the low-temperature tetragonal phase. A clear dome for the charge ordering around x = 1/8 is detected well below the structural transition. This result is quite different from other systems in which static stripes are detected. There the charge order is determined by the structural transition appearing at the same temperature. Furthermore we present results for the coherence length and the incommensurability of the stripe order as a function of Sr concentration.
