Fluid dynamics for relativistic spin-polarized media

We briefly review the basic features of a new framework for relativistic perfect fluid hydrodynamics of polarized systems consisting of particles with spin one half. Using this approach we numerically study the stability of a stationary vortex-like solution, representing global equilibrium of a rotating medium.

Virtual photon polarization and dilepton anisotropy in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions

The polarization of virtual photons produced in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions provides information on the conditions in the emitting medium. In a hydrodynamic framework, the resulting angular anisotropy of the dilepton final state depends on the flow as well as on the transverse momentum and invariant mass of the photon. We illustrate these effects in dilepton production from quark-antiquark annihilation in the QGP phase and $π^+π^-$ annihilation in the hadronic phase for a static medium in global equilibrium and for a longitudinally expanding system.

Relativistic fluid dynamics with spin

Using the conservation laws for charge, energy, momentum, and angular momentum, we derive hydrodynamic equations for the charge density, local temperature, and fluid velocity, as well as for the spin tensor, starting from local equilibrium distribution functions for particles and antiparticles with spin 1/2. The resulting set of differential equations extend the standard picture of perfect-fluid hydrodynamics with a conserved entropy current in a minimal way. This framework can be used in space-time analyzes of the evolution of spin and polarization in various physical systems including high-energy nuclear collisions. We demonstrate that a stationary vortex, which exhibits vorticity-spin alignment, corresponds to a special solution of the spin-hydrodynamical equations.

Polarization and dilepton angular distribution in pion-nucleon collisions

We study hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution for the reaction $πN \to Ne^+e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2 to compute their contribution to the anisotropy coefficient. We show that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We present results for the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, which are essential at the collision energy of the recent data obtained by the HADES collaboration on this reaction. We conclude that the anisotropy coefficient provides useful constraints for unraveling the resonance contributions to this process.

Spin-dependent distribution functions for relativistic hydrodynamics of spin-1/2 particles

Recently advocated expressions for the phase-space dependent spin-1/2 density matrices of particles and antiparticles are analyzed in detail and reduced to the forms linear in the Dirac spin operator. This allows for a natural determination of the spin polarization vectors of particles and antiparticles by the trace of products of the spin density matrices and the Pauli matrices. We demonstrate that the total spin polarization vector obtained in this way agrees with the Pauli-Lubanski four-vector, constructed from an appropriately chosen spin tensor and boosted to the particle rest frame. We further show that several forms of the spin tensor used in the literature give the same Pauli-Lubanski four-vector.

Polarization and dilepton anisotropy in pion-nucleon collisions

Hadronic polarization and the related anisotropy of the dilepton angular distribution are studied for the reaction $πN \rightarrow Ne^+ e^-$. We employ consistent effective interactions for baryon resonances up to spin-5/2, where non-physical degrees of freedom are eliminated, to compute the anisotropy coefficients for isolated intermediate baryon resonances. It is shown that the spin and parity of the intermediate baryon resonance is reflected in the angular dependence of the anisotropy coefficient. We then compute the anisotropy coefficient including the $N(1520)$ and $N(1440)$ resonances, which are essential at the collision energy of the recent data obtained by the HADES collaboration on this reaction. We conclude that the anisotropy coefficient provides useful constraints for unravelling the resonance contributions to this process.

Short-range correlation effects on the nuclear matrix element of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay

We report the results of a calculation of the nuclear matrix element of neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{48}$Ca, carried out taking into account nucleon-nucleon correlations in both coordinate- and spin-space. Our numerical results, obtained using nuclear matter correlation functions, suggest that inclusion of correlations leads to a $\sim$ $20\%$ decrease of the matrix element, with respect to the shell model prediction. This conclusion is supported by the results of an independent calculation, in which correlation effects are taken into account using the spectroscopic factors of $^{48}$Ca obtained from an {\em ab intitio} many body approach.
