Enhancement of Harvesting Vacuum Entanglement in Cosmic String Spacetime

We analyze the entanglement generation in a pair of qubits that experience the vacuum fluctuations of a scalar field in the Cosmic String spacetime. The qubits are modeled as Unruh-DeWitt detectors coupled to a massless scalar field. We introduce a Heisenberg $XY$-interaction between the qubits that enhances the generation of quantum correlations. It is supposed that the qubits begin at a general mixed state described by a density operator with no entanglement while the field stays at its vacuum state. In this way, we find the general properties and conditions to create entanglement between the qubits by exploiting the field vacuum fluctuations. We quantify the qubits entanglement using the Negativity measure based on the Peres-Horodecki positive partial transpose criterion. We find that the Cosmic String would increase the entanglement harvesting when both qubits are near the Cosmic String. When the qubits locations are far from the Cosmic String we recover the usual results for Minkowski space. The Heisenberg $XY$-interaction enhance the entanglement harvesting irrespective of the coupling nature (ferromagnetic or anti-ferromagnetic). When the qubits are far apart from each other we find a maximum entanglement harvesting at the resonance points between the Heisenberg coupling constant and the qubits energy gap.

Spin-polarized current, spin-transfer torque and spin Hall effect in presence of an electromagnetic non-minimal coupling

In this contribution, we start off from a fully relativistic description of a single electron non-minimally coupled to an external electromagnetic field. Making direct use of the field equation, instead of canonically deriving from the Lagrangian density, the relativistic total angular momentum is attained, where the effect of the relativistic torque due to the external sources is also taken into account. Both the spin density and the orbital angular momentum tensors are identified in the relativistic-covariant approach. Furthermore, the symmetric and gauge invariant energy-momentum tensor is derived as well. In addition, to inspect the non-relativistic regime, a perturbative expansion of the field equation up to the leading order in $\left(v/c\right)$ is carried out, where spin-orbit interaction terms naturally emerge in the non-relativistic Hamiltonian as a consequence of the non-minimal coupling. Features related to the spin currents, the spin-transfer torque and their dependence on both magnetic and electric external fields are then calculated and discussed. Considering that spin-orbit coupled systems are of particular interest in the study of spin Hall effect, a two-dimensional (planar) scenario of the system is contemplated, where the contributions to the Landau levels are re-assessed. As a consequence of the planar regime and the non-minimal coupling, a peculiar sort of fractionalization of the spin-up and -down components emerges with the different spin components localized in distinct positions.

The Unruh Quantum Otto Engine

We introduce a quantum heat engine performing an Otto cycle by using the thermal properties of the quantum vacuum. Since Hawking and Unruh, it has been established that the vacuum space, either near a black hole or for an accelerated observer, behaves as a bath of thermal radiation. In this work, we present a fully quantum Otto cycle, which relies on the Unruh effect for a single quantum bit (qubit) in contact with quantum vacuum fluctuations. By using the notions of quantum thermodynamics and perturbation theory we obtain that the quantum vacuum can exchange heat and produce work on the qubit. Moreover, we obtain the efficiency and derive the conditions to have both a thermodynamic and a kinematic cycle in terms of the initial populations of the excited state, which define a range of allowed accelerations for the Unruh engine.

Gauge fields in graphene with nonuniform elastic deformations: A quantum field theory approach

We investigate the low energy continuum limit theory for electrons in a graphene sheet under strain. We use the quantum field theory in curved spaces to analyze the effect of the system deformations into an effective gauge field. We study both in-plane and out-of-plane deformations and obtain a closed expression for the effective gauge field due to arbitrary nonuniform sheet deformations. The obtained results reveal a remarkable relation between the local-pseudo magnetic field and the Riemann curvature, so far overlooked.
