Smoothing of singular intersections of ellipsoids: pyramitoid

The goal of this work is to continue the study the smoothings of 3-dimensional manifolds with singularities obtained as small covers of non simple right-angle Coxeter polyhedral orbifolds. They appear in the study of coaxial intersections of ellipsoids. In particular we introduce the concept of $n$-pyramitoid generalizing the $n$-pyramid.

Denef-Loeser zeta functions of suspensions and Lê-Yomdin singularities

The holomorphy conjecture for suspensions of plane curve singularities and the holomorphy and monodromy conjectures for Lê-Yomdin singularities of surfaces are proved. The first part of this paper provides formulæ for the motivic and topological zeta functions for a family of hypersurfaces, including the suspensions by an arbitrary number of points and which are more general than Thom-Sebastiani type. These formulae generalize and are inspired by the description of the topological and the 2-twisted topological zeta functions of suspensions by 2 points of hypersurfaces, due to the first named author, Cassou-Noguès, Luengo and Melle. The new general formulæ deal with arbitrary values of the twisting parameter. An interesting feature of these general formulæ is the appearance of values of the Jordan's totient function as coefficients of the topological and the twisted topological zeta functions of some auxiliary hypersurfaces of smaller dimension.

Dicritical divisors and hypercurvettes

Germs of rational functions~$h$ on points $p$ of smooth varieties~$S$ define germs of rational maps to the projective line. Assume that $p$ is in the indeterminacy locus of $h$. If $π:\hat{S}\to S$ is a birational map which is an isomorphism outside $p$, then $h$ lifts to a germ of a rational map on $(\hat{S}, π^{-1}(p))$. The exceptional components $E_i$ of $π^{-1}(p)$ are classified according to the restriction of (the lift of) $h$ to $E_i$; the dicritical components are those where this restriction induces a dominant map. In a series of papers, Abhyankar and the first named author studied this setting in dimension $2$, where the main result is that, for any given $π$, there is a rational function $h$ with a prescribed subset of exceptional components that are dicritical of some given degree. The concept of curvette of an exceptional component played a key role in the proof. The second named author extended previously the concept of curvette to the higher dimensional case. Here we use this concept to generalize the above result to arbitrary dimension.

Milnor number of plane curve singularities in arbitrary characteristic

Reduced power series in two variables with coefficients in a field of characteristic zero satisfy a well-known formula that relates a codimension related to the normalization of a ring and the jacobian ideal. In the general case Deligne proved that this formula is only an inequality; García Barroso and Płoski stated a conjecture for irreducible power series. In this work we generalize Kouchnirenko's formula for any degenerated power series and also generalize García Barroso and Płoski's conjecture. We prove the conjecture in some cases using in particular Greuel and Nguyen.

Superisolated singularities and friends

Superisolated surface singularities in $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$ were introduced by I. Luengo to prove that the $μ$-constant stratum may be singular. The main feature of this family is that it can bring information from the projective plane curves (global setting but smaller dimension) into surface singularities. They are simple enough to allow to retreive information and complicated enough to offer a variety of properties. The so-called Lê-Yomdin singularities are a generalization which offers a wider catalog of examples. We study some properties of these singularities, mainly topological and related with the monodromy, and we introduce another family which exploits the same properties but in the quasi-homogeneous setting.

Algebraic and symplectic curves of degree 8

We study the existence of some irreducible projective plane curves of degree~$8$ with some prescribed topological type of singularities in the algebraic and symplectic worlds.

Cyclic coverings of rational normal surfaces which are quotients of a product of curves

This paper deals with cyclic covers of a large family of rational normal surfaces that can also be described as quotients of a product, where the factors are cyclic covers of algebraic curves. We use a generalization of Esnault-Viehweg method to show that the action of the monodromy on the first Betti group of the covering (and its Hodge structure) splits as a direct sum of the same data for some specific cyclic covers over $\mathbb{P}^1$. This has applications to the study of Lê-Yomdin surface singularities, in particular to the action of the monodromy on the Mixed Hodge Structure, as well as to isotrivial fibered surfaces.

Rational homology disk smoothings of surface singularities; the exceptional cases

It is known (Stipsicz-Szabó-Wahl) that there are exactly three triply-infinite and seven singly-infinite families of weighted homogeneous normal surface singularities admitting a rational homology disk ($\mathbb{Q}$HD) smoothing, i.e., having a Milnor fibre with Milnor number zero. Some examples are found by an explicit "quotient construction", while others require the "Pinkham method". The fundamental group of the Milnor fibre has been known for all except the three exceptional families $\mathcal B_2^3(p), \mathcal C^3_2(p),$ and $\mathcal C^3_3(p)$. In this paper, we settle these cases. We present a new explicit construction for the $\mathcal B_2^3(p)$ family, showing the fundamental group is non-abelian (as occurred previously only for the $\mathcal A^4(p), \mathcal B^4(p)$ and $\mathcal C^4(p)$ cases). We show that the fundamental groups for $ \mathcal C^3_2(p)$ and $\mathcal C^3_3(p)$ are abelian, hence easily computed; using the Pinkham method here requires precise calculations for the fundamental group of the complement of a plane curve.

On a quadratic form associated with a surface automorphism and its applications to Singularity Theory

We study the nilpotent part $N'$ of a pseudo-periodic automorphism $h$ of a real oriented surface with boundary $Σ$. We associate a quadratic form $Q$ defined on the first homology group (relative to the boundary) of the surface $Σ$. Using the twist formula and techniques from mapping class group theory, we prove that the form $\tilde{Q}$ obtained after killing ${\ker N}$ is positive definite if all the screw numbers associated with certain orbits of annuli are positive. We also prove that the restriction of $\tilde Q$ to the absolute homology group of $Σ$ is even whenever the quotient of the Nielsen-Thurston graph under the action of the automorphism is a tree. The case of monodromy automorphisms of Milnor fibers $Σ=F$ of germs of curves on normal surface singularities is discussed in detail, and the aforementioned results are specialized to such situation. Moreover, the form $\tilde{Q}$ is computable in terms of the dual resolution or semistable reduction graph, as illustrated with several examples. Numerical invariants associated with $\tilde{Q}$ are able to distinguish plane curve singularities with different topological types but same spectral pairs. Finally, we discuss a generic linear germ defined on a superisolated surface. In this case the plumbing graph is not a tree and the restriction of $\tilde Q$ to the absolute monodromy of $Σ=F$ is not even.

Triangular curves and cyclotomic Zariski tuples

The purpose of this paper is to exhibit infinite families of conjugate projective curves in a number field whose complement have the same abelian fundamental group, but are non-homeomorphic. In particular, for any $d>3$ we find Zariski tuples parametrized by the $d$-roots of unity up to complex conjugation. As a consequence, for any divisor $m$ of $d$, $m\neq 1,2,3,4,6$, we find arithmetic Zariski $\frac{ϕ(m)}{2}$-tuples with coefficients in the corresponding cyclotomic field. These curves have abelian fundamental group and they are distinguished using a linking invariant.

On Maximal order poles of generalized topological zeta functions

We show some examples of topological zeta functions associated to an isolated plane curve singular point and an allowed, in the sense of Némethi and Veys, differential form that have several poles of order two. This is in contrast to the case of the standard differential form where, as showed by Veys for plane curves and by Nicaise and Xu in general, there is always at most one pole of order two.

Coverings of rational ruled normal surfaces

In this work we use arithmetic, geometric, and combinatorial techniques to compute the cohomology of Weil divisors of a special class of normal surfaces, the so-called rational ruled toric surfaces. These computations are used to study the topology of cyclic coverings of such surfaces ramified along Q-normal crossing divisors.

Heegaard splittings of graph manifolds

In this paper we give a method to construct Heegaard splittings of oriented graph manifolds with orientable bases. A graph manifold is a closed $3$-manifold admitting only Seifert-fibered pieces in its Jaco-Shalen decomposition; for technical reasons, we restrict our attention to the fully oriented case, i.e. both the pieces and the bases are oriented.

Fundamental groups of real arrangements and torsion in the lower central series quotients

By using computer assistance, we prove that the fundamental group of the complement of a real complexified line arrangement is not determined by its intersection lattice, providing a counter-example for a problem of Falk and Randell. We also deduce that the torsion of the lower central series quotients is not combinatorially determined, which gives a negative answer to a question of Suciu.

Wirtinger curves, Artin groups, and hypocycloids

The computation of the fundamental group of the complement of an algebraic plane curve has been theoretically solved since Zariski-van Kampen, but actual computations are usually cumbersome. In this work, we describe the notion of Wirtinger presentation of such a group relying on the real picture of the curve and with the same combinatorial flavor as the classical Wirtinger presentation; we determine a significant family of curves for which Wirtinger presentation provides the required fundamental group. The above methods allow us to compute that fundamental group for an infinite subfamily of hypocycloids, relating them with Artin groups.

On some conjectures about free and nearly free divisors

In this paper infinite families of examples of irreducible free and nearly free curves in the complex projective plane which are not rational curves and whose local singularites can have an arbitrary number of branches are given. All these examples answer negatively to some conjectures proposed by A. Dimca and G. Sticlaru. Our examples say nothing about the most remarkable conjecture by A. Dimca and G. Sticlaru, i.e. every rational cuspidal plane curve is either free or nearly free.
