Convexity and concavity in Banach lattices

These notes are a detailed, self-contained introductory course on convexity and concavity in Banach lattices, suitable for both experts and beginners. We revisit, from a modern perspective, the classical notions of $(p,q)$-convexity, $(p,q)$-concavity and upper and lower $p$-estimates, and the main relations between these properties, integrating more recent developments in the area. We explain in full detail the $p$-convexification and $p$-concavification techniques. We also provide a comprehensive exposition of the main factorization results for $(p,q)$-convex and $(p,q)$-concave operators, including well-known results from Krivine, Maurey--Nikishin, Pietsch and Pisier, and their applications to the renorming and the representation of convex and concave Banach lattices.

Isometric embeddings into $C(K)$-spaces doing stable phase retrieval

Motivated by a question posed by Freeman, Oikhberg, Pineau and Taylor, we prove that if $K$ is a compact Hausdorff space with $K^{(α)}\neq\varnothing$, where $2<α<ω$, then $C[1,ω^α]$ isometrically embeds into $C(K)$ doing stable phase retrieval (SPR). We also show that the latter cannot be extended to the case $α=2$.

On the existence of large subspaces of $C(K)$ that perform stable phase retrieval

The purpose of this article is to address an open problem posed by Freeman-Oikhberg-Pineau-T.~(\textit{Math.~Ann.}~2024) regarding the existence of large subspaces of $C(K)$ that perform stable phase retrieval (SPR). We begin by proving that for both the real and complex fields, the space $C(K)$ admits an infinite-dimensional SPR subspace if and only if the second Cantor-Bendixson derivative $K{''}$ is nonempty. We then show how to construct ``large" SPR subspaces of $C(K)$, where the size of the subspace depends quantitatively on the number of non-trivial Cantor-Bendixson derivatives that the compact Hausdorff space $K$ possesses.

Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates: Renorming and factorization

The notions of $p$-convexity and concavity are fundamental tools for studying Banach lattices, as they partition the class of Banach lattices into a scale of spaces with $L_p$-like properties. Upper and lower $p$-estimates provide a refinement of this scale, modeled by the Lorentz spaces $L_{p,\infty}$ and $L_{p,1}$, respectively. In this article, we provide a comprehensive treatment of Banach lattices with upper $p$-estimates. In particular, we show that many well-known theorems about $p$-convex Banach lattices have analogues in the upper $p$-estimate setting, including the ability to represent all such spaces inside of infinity sums of model spaces, to canonically factor the convex operators and identify their associated operator ideals, as well as to give a precise description of the free objects and push-outs. Proving these results is far from straightforward and will require the development of a variety of new tools that avoid convexification and concavification procedures. In fact, we will identify many fundamental differences between the theories of $p$-convexity and upper $p$-estimates, particularly with regards to isometric problems and renormings.

Norm-attaining lattice homomorphisms and renormings of Banach lattices

A well-known theorem due to R. C. James states that a Banach space is reflexive if and only if every bounded linear functional attains its norm. In this note we study Banach lattices on which every (real-valued) lattice homomorphism attains its norm. Contrary to what happens in the Banach space setting, we show that this property is not invariant under lattice isomorphisms. Namely, we show that in an AM-space every lattice homomorphism attains its norm, whereas every infinite-dimensional $C(K)$ space admits an equivalent lattice norm with a lattice homomorphism which does not attain its norm. Furthermore, we characterize coordinate functionals of atoms and show that whenever a Banach lattice $X$ supports a strictly positive functional, there exists a renorming with the property that the only (non-trivial) lattice homomorphisms attaining their norm are precisely these coordinate functionals. As a consequence, one can exhibit examples of Dedekind complete Banach lattices admitting a renorming with a non-norm-attaining lattice homomorphism, answering negatively questions posed by Dantas, Rodríguez Abellán, Rueda Zoca and the fourth author.

Free objects in Banach space theory

We survey recent progress on three relevant instances of free objects related to Banach spaces: Lipschitz free spaces generated by metric spaces, holomorphic free spaces generated by open sets and free Banach lattices generated by Banach spaces. Our emphasis will be on the parallelisms among these developments.

Free dual spaces and free Banach lattices

The relation between the free Banach lattice generated by a Banach space and free dual spaces is clarified. In particular, it is shown that for every Banach space $E$ the free $p$-convex Banach lattice generated by $E^{**}$, denoted $FBL^p[E^{**}]$, admits a canonical isometric lattice embedding into $FBL^p[E]^{**}$ and $FBL^p[E^{**}]$ is lattice finitely representable in $FBL^p[E]$. Moreover, we also show that for $p>1$, $FBL^p[E]^{**}$ can actually be considered as the free dual $p$-convex Banach lattice generated by $E$, whereas for $p=1$ this happens precisely when $E$ does not contain complemented copies of $\ell_1$.
