Isogeny graphs of elliptic curves in characteristic zero

For an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$ with $\operatorname{End}_K \! E \cong \mathbb{Z}$, we classify which isogeny graphs $\mathcal{G}(E/K)$ can occur. We first show that $\mathcal{G}(E/K)$ decomposes as a weak Cartesian product of its $p$-primary isogeny graphs, one for each prime $p$, thereby reducing the problem to classifying $p$-primary isogeny graphs. We then show that each such graph is isomorphic, as an edge-weighted graph, to a member of an explicit family of edge-weighted graphs $\mathcal{H}_{p^k}^r$ and $\mathcal{H}_{p^{\infty,+}}^r$, every member of which occurs as a $p$-primary isogeny graph except for $\mathcal{H}_{2^k}^0$ for $k\ge 2$. The proof relies on a detailed study of the $p$-adic Galois representation attached to $E$, through which we identify each graph with a subgroup of $\operatorname*{GL}\nolimits_{2}(\mathbb{Z}_{p})$. More generally, we identify subgroups of $\operatorname*{GL}\nolimits_{2}(\widehat{\mathbb{Z}})$ for each possible isogeny graph and describe their corresponding modular curves, completing, in the genus $0$ case, the explicit parameterization of isogeny graphs via parameterized isogenous families of elliptic curves. We also introduce the $p$-blooming invariant $\mathfrak{I}_p(E/K)$, an isogeny class invariant determining the value of $r$ in the $p$-primary isogeny graph, and show that elliptic curves over fields with a real embedding attain the smallest possible value. As applications, we characterize the isogeny graphs of elliptic curves with potential complex multiplication; give an algorithm for determining the isogeny graph from the adelic Galois representation; recover the classification of rational isogeny graphs; and, under GRH, classify the isogeny graphs occurring over certain number fields.

Non-hyperelliptic modular curves of genus 3

A curve $C$ defined over $\mathbb Q$ is modular of level $N$ if there exists a non-constant morphism from $X_1(N)$ onto $C$ defined over $\mathbb Q$ for some positive integer $N$. We provide a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of a modular non-hyperelliptic curve $C$ of genus $3$ and level $N$ such that $\mathrm{Jac}{(C)}$ is $\mathbb Q$-isogenous to a given three dimensional $\mathbb Q$-quotient of $J_1 (N)$. Using this criterion, we present an algorithm to compute explicitly equations for modular non-hyperelliptic curves of genus $3$. Let $C$ be a modular curve of level $N$, we say that $C$ is new if the corresponding morphism between $J_1(N)$ and $\mathrm{Jac}{(C)}$ factors through the new part of $J_1(N)$.

On the Brauer class of Modular Endomorphism Algebras

We investigate the Brauer class of the endomorphism algebra of the motive attached to a non-CM form. The ramification of the algebra is shown in many cases to be controlled by the normalized slopes of the form.

Computations on Modular Jacobian Surfaces

We give a method for finding rational equations of genus 2 curves whose jacobians are abelian varieties $A_f$ attached by Shimura to normalized newforms $f \in S_2( Γ_0(N))$. We present all the curves corresponding to principally polarized surfaces $A_f$ for $N\leq500$.

Squares in arithmetic progression over quadratic extensions of number fields

We study arithmetic progressions of squares over quadratic extensions of number fields. Using a method inspired by an approach of Mordell, we characterize such progressions as quadratic points on a genus $5$ curve. Specifically, we determine the set of $K$-quadratic points on this curve under certain conditions on the base field $K$. Our main results rely on the algebraic properties of specific elliptic curves after performing a base change to suitable number fields. As a consequence, we establish that, under appropriate assumptions, any non-elementary arithmetic progression of five or six squares properly defined over a quadratic extension of $K$ must be of a specific form. Moreover, we prove the non-existence of such progressions of length greater than six under these assumptions.

On the squareness of the discriminant of elliptic curves with an isogeny

We establish a classification of the values of \( N \) for which an elliptic curve defined over \( \mathbb{Q} \) with square discriminant admits an \( N \)-isogeny. Furthermore, we determine the values of \( N \) for which two elliptic curves defined over \( \mathbb{Q} \), both possessing square discriminants, are \( N \)-isogenous. In both cases, we explicitly parametrize the corresponding \( j \)-invariants of the elliptic curves associated with these problems.

Quadratic points on the Fermat quartic over number fields

Let $C$ be a curve defined over a number field $K$. A point $P\in C(\overline{\mathbb{Q}})$ is called $K$-quadratic if $[K(P):K]=2$. Let $K$ be a number field such that the rank of the elliptic curves $E_1:\,y^2= x^3 + 4x$ and $E_2:\,y^2= x^3 - 4x$ over $K$ are $0$. Under the above condition, we prove that the set of $K$-quadratic points on the Fermat quartic $F_4\colon X^4+Y^4=Z^4$ is finite and computable and we provide a procedure to compute this finite set. In particular, we explicitly compute all the $K$-quadratic points if $[K:\mathbb{Q}]<8$. Moreover, if the degree of $K$ is odd, we prove that all the $K$-quadratic points corresponds just to the $\mathbb{Q}$-quadratic points

Faltings elliptic curves in twisted $\mathbb Q$-isogeny classes

Let $G$ be the graph attached to the $\mathbb Q$-isogeny class of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$: that is, a vertex for every elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$ in the isogeny class, and edges in correspondence with the prime degree rational isogenies between them. Stevens shows that there is a unique elliptic curve in $G$ with minimal Faltings height. We call this curve the Faltings elliptic curve in $G$. For every square-free integer $d$, we consider the graph~$G^d$ attached to the twisted elliptic curves in $G$ by the quadratic character of $\mathbb Q(\sqrt{d})$. It turns out that $G$ and $G^d$ are canonically isomorphic as abstract graphs (the isomorphism identifies the vertices with equal $j$-invariant). In this paper we determine which vertex is the Faltings elliptic curve in $G^d$. We also obtain the probability of a vertex in $G$ to be the Faltings elliptic curve in~$G^d$. It turns out that this probability depends on the $p$-adic valuations of rational values of certain modular functions.

Models of CM elliptic curves with a prescribed $\ell$-adic Galois image

For each prime number $\ell$ and for each imaginary quadratic order of class number one or two, we determine all the possible $\ell$-adic Galois representations that occur for any elliptic curve with complex multiplication by such an order over its minimal field of definition, and then we determine all the isomorphism classes of elliptic curves that have a prescribed $\ell$-adic Galois representation.

Explicit characterization of the torsion growth of rational elliptic curves with complex multiplication over quadratic fields

In a series of papers we classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves base-extended to number fields of a fixed degree. In this paper we turn our attention to the question of how the torsion of an elliptic curve with complex multiplication defined over the rationals grows over quadratic fields. We go further and we give an explicit characterization of the quadratic fields where the torsion grows in terms of some invariants attached to the curve.

An algorithm for determining torsion growth of elliptic curves

We present a fast algorithm that takes as input an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$ and an integer $d$ and returns all the number fields $K$ of degree $d'$ dividing $d$ such that $E(K)_{tors}$ contains $E(F)_{tors}$ as a proper subgroup, for all $F \varsubsetneq K$. We ran this algorithm on all elliptic curves of conductor less than 400.000 (a total of 2.483.649 curves) and all $d \leq 23$ and collected various interesting data. In particular, we find a degree 6 sporadic point on $X_1(4,12)$, which is so far the lowest known degree a sporadic point on $X_1(m,n)$, for $m\geq 2$.

Serre's constant of elliptic curves over the rationals

Let $E$ be an elliptic curve without complex multiplication defined over the rationals. The purpose of this article is to define a positive integer $A(E)$, that we call the {\it Serre's constant associated to $E$}, that gives necessary conditions to conclude that $ρ_{E,m}$, the mod m Galois representation associated to $E$, is non-surjective. In particular, if there exists a prime factor $p$ of $m$ satisfying ${\rm val}_p(m) > {\rm val}_p(A(E))>0$ then $ρ_{E,m}$ is non-surjective. {Conditionally under Serre's Uniformity Conjecture, w}e determine all the Serre's constants of elliptic curves without complex multiplication over the rationals that occur infinitely often. Moreover, we give all the possible combination of mod $p$ Galois representations that occur for infinitely many non-isomorphic classes of non-CM elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$, and the known cases that appear only finitely. We obtain similar results for the possible combination of maximal non-surjective subgroups of ${\rm GL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_p)$. Finally, we conjecture all the possibilities of these combinations and in particular all the possibilities of these Serre's constant.

Torsion growth over cubic fields of rational elliptic curves with complex multiplication

This article is a contribution to the project of classifying the torsion growth of elliptic curve upon base-change. In this article we treat the case of elliptic curve defined over the rationals with complex multiplication. For this particular case, we give a description of the possible torsion growth over cubic fields and a completely explicit description of this growth in terms of some invariants attached to a given elliptic curve.

On the torsion of rational elliptic curves over sextic fields

Given an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb{Q}$ with torsion subgroup $G = E(\mathbb{Q})_{\rm tors}$ we study what groups (up to isomorphism) can occur as the torsion subgroup of $E$ base-extended to $K$, a degree 6 extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. We also determine which groups $H = E(K)_{\rm tors}$ can occur infinitely often and which ones occur for only finitely many curves. This article is a first step towards a complete classification of torsion growth of over sextic fields.

Growth of torsion groups of elliptic curves upon base change

We study how the torsion of elliptic curves over number fields grows upon base change, and in particular prove various necessary conditions for torsion growth. For a number field $F$, we show that for a large set of number fields $L$, whose Galois group of their normal closure over $F$ has certain properties, it will hold that $E(L)_{tors}=E(F)_{tors}$ for all elliptic curves $E$ defined over $F$. Our methods turn out to be particularly useful in studying the possible torsion groups $E(K)_{tors}$, where $K$ is a number field and $E$ is a base change of an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$. Suppose that $E$ is a base change of an elliptic curve over $\mathbb Q$ for the remainder of the abstract. We prove that $E(K)_{tors}=E(\mathbb Q)_{tors}$ for all elliptic curves $E$ defined over $\mathbb Q$ and all number fields $K$ of degree $d$, where $d$ is not divisible by a prime $\leq 7$. Using this fact, we determine all the possible torsion groups $E(K)_{tors}$ over number fields $K$ of prime degree $p\geq 7$. We determine all the possible degrees of $[\mathbb Q(P):\mathbb Q]$, where $P$ is a point of prime order $p$ for all $p$ such that $p\not\equiv 8 \pmod 9$ or $\left( \frac{-D}{p}\right)=1$ for any $D\in \{1,2,7,11,19,43,67,163\}$; this is true for a set of density $\frac{1535}{1536}$ of all primes and in particular for all $p<3167$. Using this result, we determine all the possible prime orders of a point $P\in E(K)_{tors}$, where $[K:\mathbb Q]=d$, for all $d\leq 3342296$. Finally, we determine all the possible groups $E(K)_{tors}$, where $K$ is a quartic number field and $E$ is an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$ and show that no quartic sporadic point on a modular curves $X_1(m,n)$ comes from an elliptic curve defined over $\mathbb Q$.

Complete classification of the torsion structures of rational elliptic curves over quintic number fields

We classify the possible torsion structures of rational elliptic curves over quintic number fields. In addition, let E be an elliptic curve defined over Q and let G = E(Q)_tors be the associated torsion subgroup. We study, for a given G, which possible groups G \subseteq H could appear such that H=E(K)_tors, for [K:Q]=5. In particular, we prove that at most there is a quintic number field K such that E(Q)_tors\neq E(K)_tors.
