Critical set for surface diffeomorphisms revisited

We propose a notion of critical set for two-dimensional surface diffeomorphisms as an intrinsically defined object designed to play a role analogous to that of critical points in one-dimensional dynamics.

Quantitative Estimates on Invariant Manifolds for Surface Diffeomorphisms

We carry out a detailed quantitative analysis on the geometry of invariant manifolds for smooth dissipative systems in dimension two. We begin by quantifying the regularity of any orbit (finite or infinite) in the phase space with a set of explicit inequalities. Then we relate this directly to the quasi-linearization of the local dynamics on regular neighborhoods of this orbit. The parameters of regularity explicitly determine the sizes of the regular neighborhoods and the smooth norms of the corresponding regular charts. As a corollary, we establish the existence of smooth stable and center manifolds with uniformly bounded geometries for regular orbits independently of any pre-existing invariant measure. This provides us with the technical background for the renormalization theory of Hénon-like maps developed in the sequel papers.

A Priori Bounds for Hénon-like Renormalization

We formulate and prove $\textit{a priori}$ bounds for the renormalization of Hénon-like maps (under certain regularity assumptions). This provides a certain uniform control on the small-scale geometry of the dynamics, and ensures pre-compactness of the renormalization sequence. In a sequel to this paper, a priori bounds are used in the proof of the main results, including renormalization convergence, finite-time checkability of the required regularity conditions and regular unicriticality of the dynamics.

Renormalization of Unicritical Diffeomorphisms of the Disk

We introduce a class of infinitely renormalizable, unicritical diffeomorphisms of the disk (with a non-degenerate "critical point"). In this class of dynamical systems, we show that under renormalization, maps eventually become Hénon-like, and then converge super-exponentially fast to the space of one-dimensional unimodal maps. We also completely characterize the local geometry of every stable and center manifolds that exist in these systems. The theory is based upon a quantitative reformulation of the Oseledets-Pesin theory yielding a unicritical structure of the maps in question comprising regular Pesin boxes co-existing with "critical tunnels" and "valuable crescents". In forthcoming notes we will show that infinitely renormalizable perturbative Hénon-like maps of bounded type belong to our class.

Mildly dissipative diffeomorphisms of the disk with zero entropy

We discuss the dynamics of smooth diffeomorphisms of the disc with vanishing topological entropy which satisfy the mild dissipation property introduced in [CP]. In particular it contains the Hénon maps with Jacobian up to 1/4. We prove that these systems are either (generalized) Morse Smale or infinitely renormalizable. In particular we prove for this class of diffeomorphisms a conjecture of Tresser: any diffeomorphism in the interface between the sets of systems with zero and positive entropy admits doubling cascades. This generalizes for these surface dynamics a well known consequence of Sharkovskii's theorem for interval maps.

From zero to positive entropy

In the sciences in general, the phrase "route to chaos" has come to refer to a metaphor when some physical, biological, economic, or social system transitions from one exhibiting order to one displaying randomness (or chaos). Sometimes the goal is to understand which universal mechanisms explain that transition, and how one can describe systems that operate in a region between order and complete chaos. In other words, the goal is to understand the mathematical processes by which a system evolves from one whose recurrent set is finite towards another one exhibiting chaotic behavior as parameters governing the behavior of the system are varied. This has only been understood for one-dimensional dynamics. The present note exposes new approaches that allow one to move away from those limitations. A tentative global framework toward describing a large class of two-dimensional dynamics, inspired partially by the developments in the one-dimensional theory of interval maps is discussed. More precisely, we present a class of intermediate smooth dynamics between one and higher dimensions. In this setting, it could be possible to develop a similar one-dimensional type approach and in particular to understand the transition from zero entropy to positive entropy.

Germ-typicality of the coexistence of infinitely many sinks

In the spirit of Kolmogorov typicality, we introduce the notion of germ-typicality: in a space of dynamics, it encompass all these phenomena that occur for a dense and open subset of parameters of any generic parametrized family of systems. For any $2\le r<\infty$, we prove that the Newhouse phenomenon (the coexistence of infinitely many sinks) is locally $C^r$-germ-typical, nearby a dissipative bicycle: a dissipative homoclinic tangency linked to a special heterodimensional cycle. During the proof we show a result of independent interest: the stabilization of some heterodimensional cycles for any regularity class $r\in \{1, \dots, \infty\}\cup \{ω\}$ by introducing a new renormalization scheme. We also continue the study of the paradynamics done in [Be15,Be17,BCP16] and prove that parablenders appear by unfolding some heterodimensional cycles.

Invariance of entropy for maps isotopic to Anosov

We prove the topological entropy remains constant inside the class of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms of $\mathbb{T}^d$ with simple central bundle (that is, when it decomposes into one dimensional sub-bundles with controlled geometry) and such that their induced action on $H_1(\mathbb{T}^d)$ is hyperbolic. In absence of the simplicity condition we construct a robustly transitive counter-example.

Classification of partially hyperbolic diffeomorphisms under some rigid conditions

Consider a three dimensional partially hyperbolic diffeomorphism. It is proven that under some rigid hypothesis on the tangent bundle dynamics, the map is (modulo finite covers and iterates) either an Anosov diffeomorphism, a skew-product or the time-one map of an Anosov flow, thus recovering a well known classification conjecture of the second author to this restricted setting.

Discrete dynamics and differentiable stacks

In this paper we relate the study of actions of discrete groups over connected manifolds to that of their orbit spaces seen as differentiable stacks. We show that the orbit stack of a discrete dynamical system on a simply connected manifold encodes the dynamics up to conjugation and inversion. We also prove a generalization of this result for arbitrary discrete groups and non-simply connected manifolds, and relate it to the covering theory of stacks. As applications, we obtain a geometric version of Rieffel's theorem on irrational rotations of the circle, we compute the stack-theoretic fundamental group of hyperbolic toral automorphisms, and we revisit the classification of lens spaces.

Stable and non-symmetric pitchfork bifurcations

In this paper, we present a criterion for pitchfork bifurcation of smooth vector fields based on a topological argument. Our result expands Rajapakse and Smale's result \cite{RS2} significantly. Based on our criterion, we present a class of families of non-symmetric vector fields undergoing a pitchfork bifurcation.

Strongly dissipative surface diffeomorphisms

We introduce a class of volume-contracting surface diffeomorphisms whose dynamics is intermediate between one-dimensional dynamics and general surface dynamics. For that type of systems one can associate to the dynamics a reduced one-dimensional model and it is proved a type of $C^\infty-$closing lemma on the support of every ergodic measure. We also show that this class contains Hénon maps with Jacobian in $(-1/4,1/4)$.

Differentiability of correlations in Realistic Quantum Mechanics

We prove a version of Bell's Theorem in which the Locality assumption is weakened. We start by assuming theoretical quantum mechanics and weak forms of relativistic causality and of realism (essentially the fact that observable values are well defined independently of whether or not they are measured). Under these hypotheses, we show that only one of the correlation functions that can be formulated in the framework of the usual Bell theorem is unknown. We prove that this unknown function must be differentiable at certain angular configuration points that include the origin. We also prove that, if this correlation is assumed to be twice differentiable at the origin, then we arrive at a version of Bell's theorem. On the one hand, we are showing that any realistic theory of quantum mechanics which incorporates the kinematic aspects of relativity must lead to this type of \emph{rough} correlation function that is once but not twice differentiable. On the other hand, this study brings us a single degree of differentiability away from a relativistic von Neumann no hidden variables theorem.

Recognizing how some states are built, from mixed states to singlets

It is well known that different preparations of a mixed state cannot be distinguished by a measurement of that state. Yet we show that some other experiments let us make this distinction despite a very general belief that this would not be possible. Issues in quantum cryptography that prompted this work are only briefly mentioned in this letter.

Dynamical Properties of Gaussian Thermostats

In this work we show that the set of Kupka-Smale Gaussian thermostats on a compact manifold is generic. A Gaussian thermostat is Kupka-Smale if the closed orbits are hyperbolic and the heteroclinic intersection are transversal. We also show a dichotomy between robust transitivity and existence of arbitrary number of attractors or repellers orbits. The main tools are the concept of transitions adapted to the conformally symplectic context and a perturbative theorem which is a version of the Franks lemma for Gaussian thermostats. Finally we provide some conditions in terms of geometrical invariants for an invariant set of a Gaussian thermostat to have dominated splitting. From that we conclude some dynamical properties for the surface case.
