Coarse graining hadronic scattering

We show that it makes sense to coarse grain hadronic interactions such as $ππ$ and $πN$ reactions following previous work on NN scattering. Moreover, if the interaction is taken to be given by chiral dynamics at long distances above a given value $r > r_c$ larger than the elementary radii of the interaction hadrons the unknown short distance region $r< r_c$ is characterized by a {\it finite} number of fitting parameters. This number of independent parameters needed for a presumably complete description of scattering data for a CM energy below $\sqrt{s}$ has been found to be given by $N_{\rm Par} = N_S \times N_I \times (p r_c )^2 /2 $ with $N_S$ and $N_I$ the number of spin and isospin channels, and $p$ the CM momentum respectively. Therefore, for an experiment (or sets of experiments) with a total number of data $N_{\rm Dat}$ the number of degrees of freedom involved in a $χ^2$-fit is given by $ν= N_{\rm Dat}-N_{\rm Par}$ and confidence levels can be obtained accordingly by standard means. Namely a $1 σ$ confidence level corresponds to $χ_{\rm min}^2/ν\in (1- \sqrt{2/ν},1+\sqrt{2/ν})$. We discuss the approach for $ππ$ and $πN$ with an eye put on a data selection program and the eventual validation of chiral symmetry.

Hollowness in $pp$ and $p \bar p$ scattering in a Regge model

The proton-proton and proton-antiproton inelasticity profiles in the impact parameter display very interesting and sensitive features which cannot be deduced solely from the current large body of high-energy scattering data. In particular, phenomenological studies exhibit a link between the ratio of the real to imaginary parts of the elastic scattering amplitude at a finite momentum transfer, and the corresponding change of character of the inelastic processes from central to peripheral collisions. We describe how a theoretical model, accommodating the existing data, based on the Regge hypothesis including both the Pomeron and odderon as double poles, and $ω$ and $f$ mesons as single poles in the complex-$J$ plane, generates a hollow in the inelasticity at low impact parameters. The hollowness effect, which generally may be sensitive to model details, does unequivocally take place both for $pp$ and $p \bar p$ collisions within the applied Regge framework, indicating inapplicability of inelasticity-folding geometric approaches.

Coarse graining $ππ$ scattering

We carry out an analysis of $ππ$ scattering in the $IJ=00$, $11$ and $20$ channels in configuration space up to a maximal center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}=1.4$ GeV. We separate the interaction into two regions marked by an elementarity radius of the system; namely, a long distance region above which pions can be assumed to interact as elementary particles and a short distance region where many physical effects cannot be disentangled. The long distance interaction is described by chiral dynamics, where a two-pion-exchange potential is identified, computed and compared to lattice calculations. The short distance piece corresponds to a coarse grained description exemplified by a superposition of delta-shell potentials sampling the interaction with the minimal wavelength. We show how the so constructed non-perturbative scattering amplitude complies with the proper analytic structure, allowing for an explicit N/D type decomposition in terms of the corresponding Jost functions and fulfilling dispersion relations without subtractions. We also address renormalization issues in coordinate space and investigate the role of crossing when fitting the scattering amplitudes above and below threshold to Roy-equation results. At higher energies, we show how inelasticities can be described by one single complex and energy dependent parameter. A successful description of the data can be achieved with a minimal number of fitting parameters, suggesting that coarse graining is a viable approach to analyze hadronic processes.

BCS Pairing Gap in the Infrared Limit of the Similarity Renormalization Group

Effective interactions have been used to compute the pairing gap for nuclear and neutron matter in several schemes. In this work we analyze the impact of phase-shift equivalent interactions within the BCS theory on the $^1S_0$-channel pairing gap for a translational invariant many-fermion system such as nuclear and neutron matter. We solve the BCS pairing gap equation on a finite momentum grid for a toy model separable Gaussian potential in the $^1S_0$-channel explicitly evolved through the Similarity Renormalization Group (SRG) transformation and show that in the on-shell and continuum limits the pairing gap vanishes. For finite size systems the momentum is quantized and the on-shell limit is realized for SRG cutoffs comparable to the momentum resolution. In this case the pairing gap can be computed directly from the scattering phase-shifts by an energy-shift formula. While the momentum grid is usually used as an auxiliary way of solving the BCS pairing gap equation, we show that it actually encodes some relevant physical information, suggesting that in fact finite grids may represent the finite size of the system.

Counting states and the Hadron Resonance Gas: Does X(3872) count?

We analyze how the renowned X(3872), a weakly bound state right below the $D \bar D^*$ threshold, should effectively be included in a hadronic representation of the QCD partition function. This can be decided by analyzing the $D \bar D^*$ scattering phase-shifts in the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ channel and their contribution to the level density in the continuum from which the abundance in a hot medium can be determined. We show that in a purely molecular picture the bound state contribution cancels the continuum providing a vanishing occupation number density at finite temperature and the $X(3872)$ does not count below the Quark-Gluon Plasma crossover happening at $T \sim 150$MeV. In contrast, within a coupled-channels approach, for a non vanishing $c \bar c$ content the cancellation does not occur due to the onset of the $X(3940)$ which effectively counts as an elementary particle for temperatures above $T \gtrsim 250$MeV. Thus, a direct inclusion of the $X(3872)$ in the Hadron Resonance Gas is not justified. We also estimate the role of this cancellation in X(3872) production in heavy-ion collision experiments in terms of the corresponding $p_T$ distribution due to a finite energy resolution.

Partonic quasi-distributions of the proton and pion from transverse-momentum distributions

The parton quasi-distribution functions (QDFs) of Ji have been found by Radyushkin to be directly related to the transverse momentum distributions (TMDs), to the pseudo-distributions, and to the Ioffe-time distributions (ITDs). This makes the QDF results at finite longitudinal momentum of the hadron interesting in their own right. Moreover, the QDF-TMD relation provides a gateway to the pertinent QCD evolution, with respect to the resolution scale Q, for the QDFs. Using the Kwieciński evolution equations and well established parameterizations at a low initial scale, we analyze the QCD evolution of quark and gluon QDF components of the proton and the pion. We discuss the resulting breaking of the longitudinal-transverse factorization and show that it has little impact on QDFs at the relatively low scales presently accessible on the lattice, but the effect is visible in reduced ITDs at sufficiently large values of the Ioffe time. Sum rules involving derivatives of ITDs and moments of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) are applied to the ETMC lattice data. This allows us for a lattice determination of the transverse-momentum width of the TMDs from QDF studies.

Fitting and selecting scattering data

The main purpose of scattering experiments is to unveil the underlying structure of the colliding particles and their interaction. Typically one measures scattering observables (cross sections and polarizations) at discrete angles and energies and mutually consistent data may validate or falsify proposed theories or models. However, the accumulation of data from different laboratories while potentially improves the statistical significance it may sometimes generate mutually inconsistent data as a side-effect. Thus, some decision has to be made on what are the maximal amount of data which are mutually compatible. We show elastic $πN $ and $NN$ scattering as prominent examples where this selection is called for. We discuss how it can be done in a self-consistent manner invoking a principle of maximal consensus of the database and with the help of a sufficiently flexible model involving a minimal number of theoretical assumptions. In the NN case this has become possible with a combination of long distance field theoretical constraints at the hadronic level such as pion exchanges and electromagnetic effects and a coarse graining of the unknown interaction over the shortest de Broglie wavelength being probed in the scattering process.

Does $X(3872)$ count?

The question on whether or not weakly bound states should be effectively incorporated in a hadronic representation of the QCD partition function is addressed by analyzing the example of the $X(3872)$, a resonance close to the $D\bar D^*$ threshold which has been suggested as an example of a loosely bound molecule. This can be decided by studying the $D \bar D^*$ scattering phase-shifts in the $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ channel and their contribution to the level density in the continuum, which also gives information on its abundance in a hot medium. In this work, it is shown that, in a purely molecular picture, the bound state contribution cancels the continuum, resulting in a null occupation number density at finite temperature, which implies the $X(3872)$ does not count below the Quark-Gluon Plasma crossover ($T \sim 150$MeV). However, if a non-zero $c \bar c$ component is present in the $X(3872)$ wave function such cancellation does not occur for temperatures above $T\gtrsim 250$MeV.

Thermodynamic characterizations of exotic and missing states

Thermal shifts and fluctuations at finite temperature below the deconfinement crossover of QCD from hadronic matter to the Quark-Gluon Plasma provide a viable way to look for exotic and missing states with given quantum numbers in the hadronic spectrum. We study a realization of the Hadron Resonance Gas model in the light quark ($uds$) flavor sector of QCD to study: i) the entropy shifts, and ii) the fluctuations of electric charge, baryon number and strangeness; and extract from them the possible existence of missing and exotic states from a comparison with lattice data. The analysis of the entropy shift based on the free energy of the Polyakov loop suggests the existence of exotic hybrids $g q \bar q$ and $gqqq$.

Partonic quasi-distributions of the pion in chiral quark models

The evaluation of partonic distributions presents a challenge for QCD, and in particular for its Euclidean lattice realization. Recently, objects called quasi-distributions (which become standard distributions in a limit of the longitudinal momentum of the target hadron going to infinity) have been proposed. We present a non-perturbative, dynamical evaluation of the quark quasi-distribution amplitude (QDA) of the pion in the framework of chiral quark models (the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the spectral quark model). We arrive at simple but nontrivial analytic expressions, where the dependence on the longitudinal momentum, the momentum fraction, or the transverse-momentum (for the unintegrated objects) can be explicitly assessed. For the parton distribution amplitude (PDA), we carry out the necessary QCD evolution from the constituent quark model scale to higher scales accessible on the lattice, and compare favorably to the LaMET data.

Nonperturbative partonic quasidistributions of the pion from chiral quark models

We evaluate nonperturbatively the quark quasidistribution amplitude and the valence quark quasidistribution function of the pion in the framework of chiral quark models, namely the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model and the Spectral Quark Model. We arrive at simple analytic expressions, where the nonperturbative dependence on the longitudinal momentum of the pion can be explicitly assessed. The model results for the quark quasidistribution amplitude of the pion compare favorably to the data obtained from the Euclidean lattice simulations. The quark distribution amplitude, arising in the limit of infinite longitudinal momentum of the pion, agrees, after suitable QCD evolution, to the recent data extracted from Euclidean lattices, as well as to the old data from transverse lattice simulations.

Hollowness in pp scattering at the LHC

We examine how the effect of hollowness in pp scattering at the LHC (minimum of the inelasticity profile at zero impact parameter) depends on modeling of the phase of the elastic scattering amplitude as a function of the momentum transfer. We study the cases of the constant phase, the Bailly, and the so called standard parameterizations. It is found that the 2D hollowness holds in the first two cases, whereas the 3D hollowness is a robust effect, holding for all explored cases.

Regge trajectories of Excited Baryons, quark-diquark models and quark-hadron duality

The parton model relations in conjunction with quark-hadron duality in deep inelastic scattering suggests an asymptotic dominance of quark-diquark type of baryonic excited states with a radial Regge uniformly distributed mass squared spectrum $M_{n}^2 = μ^2 n + M_0^2$. We argue that this points to a lineary quark-diquark confining potential. We analyze the radial ($n$) and angular-momentum ($J$) Regge trajectories for all light-quark states with baryon number one listed in the 2016 edition of the Particle Data Tables. The parameters of the mass squared trajectories are obtained by linear regression assuming $ΔM_n^2 \sim M_n Γ_n $ weighted with the width $Γ_n$ of the resonance and the error analysis is carried out accordingly.

Hollowness in pp scattering

It is argued that the hollowness effect (depletion in the absorptive part of the scattering cross section at small values of the impact parameter) in the proton-proton scattering at the the LHC energies finds its origin in the quantum nature of the process, resulting in large values of the real part of the eikonal phase. The effect cannot be reconciled with an incoherent superposition of the absorption from the proton constituents, thus suggests the change of this basic paradigm of high-energy scattering.

Proton-proton hollowness at the LHC from inverse scattering

Parameterizations of the pp scattering data at the LHC collision energies indicate a hollow in the inelasticity profile of the pp interaction, with less absorption for head-on collisions than at a non-zero impact parameter. We show that some qualitatively unnoticed features may be unveiled by a judicious application of the inverse scattering problem in the eikonal approximation and interpre- tation within an optical potential model. The hollowness effect is magnifed in a 3D picture of the optical potential, and will presumably be enhanced at yet higher energies. Moreover, in 3D it sets in at much smaller energies than at the LHC. We argue that hollowness in the impact parameter is a quantum effect, relying on the build-up of the real part of the eikonal scattering phase and its possible passage through $π/2$. We also show that it precludes models of inelastic collisions where inelasticity is obtained by naive folding of partonic densities.

Thermal shifts, fluctuations, and missing states

Thermal shifts and fluctuations at finite temperature below the deconfinement crossover from hadronic matter to the quark-gluon plasma provide a viable way to search for missing states with given quantum numbers in the hadronic spectrum. We analyze three realizations of the hadron resonance gas model in the light quark (uds) sector: the states from the Particle Data Group tables with or without width and from the Relativized Quark Model. We elaborate on the meaning of hadronic completeness and thermodynamical equivalence on the light of lattice QCD trace anomaly, heavy quark entropy shift and baryon, charge and strangeness susceptibilities.

Heavy Quark Coupled Channel Dynamics from Thermal Shifts

QCD at finite temperature below the phase transition should be determined in terms of colour singlet states such as hadrons and strings. We show how quark-hadron duality allows extracting sensible information concerning heavy quark and string breaking coupled channel dynamics from Polyakov loop correlators.

Proton-Proton On Shell Optical Potential at High Energies and the Hollownes Effect

We analyze the usefulness of the optical potential as suggested by the double spectral Mandelstam representation at very high energies, such as in the proton-proton scattering at ISR and the LHC. Its particular meaning regarding the interpretation of the scattering data up to the maximum available measured energies is discussed. Our analysis reconstructs 3D dynamics from the effective transverse 2D impact parameter representation and suggests that besides the onset of gray nucleons at the LHC there appears an inelasticity depletion (hollowness) which precludes convolution models at the attometer scale.
