New evidence for super-roughening in crystalline surfaces with disordered substrate

We study the behavior of the Binder cumulant related to long distance correlation functions of the discrete Gaussian model of disordered substrate crystalline surfaces. We exhibit numerical evidence that the non-Gaussian behavior in the low-$T$ region persists on large length scales, in agreement with the broken phase being super-rough.

Numerical Simulations of Spin Glass Systems

We discuss the status of Monte Carlo simulations of (mainly finite dimensional) spin glass systems. After a short historical note and a brief theoretical introduction we start by discussing the (crucial) 3D case: the warm phase, the critical point and the cold phase, the ultrametric structure and the out of equilibrium dynamics. With the same style we discuss the cases of 4D and 2D. In a few appendices we give some details about the definition of states and about the tempering Monte Carlo approach.

Optimized Monte Carlo Methods

I discuss optimized data analysis and Monte Carlo methods. Reweighting methods are discussed through examples, like Lee-Yang zeroes in the Ising model and the absence of deconfinement in QCD. I discuss reweighted data analysis and multi-hystogramming. I introduce Simulated Tempering, and as an example its application to the Random Field Ising Model. I illustrate Parallel Tempering, and discuss some technical crucial details like thermalization and volume scaling. I give a general perspective by discussing Umbrella Methods and the Multicanonical approach.

A Numerical Study of Ultrametricity in Finite Dimensional Spin Glasses

We use a constrained Monte Carlo technique to analyze ultrametric features of a 4 dimensional Edwards-Anderson spin glass with quenched couplings J=\pm 1. We find that in the large volume limit an ultrametric structure emerges quite clearly in the overlap of typical equilibrium configurations.

The String Tension in Gauge Theories

A review article on string tension concept and their relevance as non-perturbative quantity on the study of quark confinement in lattice gauge theories. A detailed description of a variety of methods to measure the string tension on the lattice and an indication of the most promising developments is proposed.

How (Super) Rough is the Glassy Phase of a Crystalline Surface with a Disordered Substrate?

We discuss the behavior of a crystalline surface with a disordered substrate. We focus on the possible existence of a {\em super-rough} glassy phase, with height-height correlation functions which vary as the square logarithm of the distance. With numerical simulations we establish the presence of such a behavior, that does not seem to be connected to finite size effects. We comment on the variational approach, and suggest that a more general extension of the method could be needed to explain fully the behavior of the model.

Two Ising Models Coupled to 2-Dimensional Gravity

To investigate the properties of $c=1$ matter coupled to $2$d{--}gravity we have performed large-scale simulations of two copies of the Ising Model on a dynamical lattice. We measure spin susceptibility and percolation critical exponents using finite-size scaling. We show explicitly how logarithmic corrections are needed for a proper comparison with theoretical exponents. We also exhibit correlations, mediated by gravity, between the energy and magnetic properties of the two Ising species. The prospects for extending this work beyond $c=1$ are addressed.

Replica Theory and Large D Josephson Junction Hypercubic Models

We study the statistical mechanics of a $D$-dimensional array of Josephson junctions in presence of a magnetic field on a lattice of side $2$. In the high temperature region the thermodynamical properties can be computed in the limit $D \to \infty$. A conjectural form of the thermodynamic properties in the low temperature phase is obtained by assuming that they are the same of an appropriate spin glass system, based on quenched disordered couplings. Numerical simulations show that this conjecture is very accurate in one regime of the magnetic field, while it is probably slightly inaccurate in a second regime.

Weighted Mean Field Theory for the Random Field Ising Model

We consider the mean field theory of the Random Field Ising Model obtained by weighing the many solutions of the mean field equations with Boltzmann-like factors. These solutions are found numerically in three dimensions and we observe critical behavior arising from the weighted sum. The resulting exponents are calculated.

The Fully Frustrated Hypercubic Model is Glassy and Aging at Large $D$

We discuss the behavior of the fully frustrated hypercubic cell in the infinite dimensional mean-field limit. In the Ising case the system undergoes a glass transition, well described by the random orthogonal model. Under the glass temperature aging effects show clearly. In the $XY$ case there is no sign of a phase transition, and the system is always a paramagnet.

Fluid Random Surfaces with Extrinsic Curvature: II

We present the results of an extension of our previous work on large-scale simulations of dynamically triangulated toroidal random surfaces embedded in $R^3$ with extrinsic curvature. We find that the extrinsic-curvature specific heat peak ceases to grow on lattices with more than 576 nodes and that the location of the peak $\lam_c$ also stabilizes. The evidence for a true crumpling transition is still weak. If we assume it exists we can say that the finite-size scaling exponent $\frac α {νd}$ is very close to zero or negative. On the other hand our new data does rule out the observed peak as being a finite-size artifact of the persistence length becoming comparable to the extent of the lattice.

On Toy Aging

We consider the dynamics of a simple one dimensional model and we discuss the phenomenon of aging (i.e., the strong dependence of the dynamical correlation functions over the waiting time). Our model is the so-called random random walk, the toy model of a directed polymer evolving in a random medium.

The Phase Structure of Strings with Extrinsic Curvature

We examine a model of non-self-avoiding, fluctuating surfaces as a candidate continuum string theory of surfaces in three dimensions. This model describes Dynamically Triangulated Random Surfaces embedded in three dimensions with an extrinsic curvature dependent action. We analyze, using Monte Carlo simulations, the dramatic crossover behaviour of several observables which characterize the geometry of these surfaces. We then critically discuss whether our observations are indicative of a phase transition.

Strings with Extrinsic Curvature: An Analysis of the Crossover Regime

We present the results of a set of Monte Carlo simulations of Dynamically Triangulated Random Surfaces embedded in three dimensions with an extrinsic curvature dependent action. We analyze several observables in the crossover regime and discuss whether or not our observations are indicative of the presence of a phase transition.

The Phase Diagram of Fluid Random Surfaces with Extrinsic Curvature

We present the results of a large-scale simulation of a Dynamically Triangulated Random Surface with extrinsic curvature embedded in three-dimensional flat space. We measure a variety of local observables and use a finite size scaling analysis to characterize as much as possible the regime of crossover from crumpled to smooth surfaces.

On Heteropolymer Shape Dynamics

We investigate the time evolution of the heteropolymer model introduced by Iori, Marinari and Parisi to describe some of the features of protein folding mechanisms. We study how the (folded) shape of the chain evolves in time. We find that for short times the mean square distance (squared) between chain configurations evolves according to a power law, $D \sim t ^ν$. We discuss the influence of the quenched disorder (represented by the randomness of the coupling constants in the Lennard-Jones potential) on value of the critical exponent. We find that $ν$ decreases from $\frac{2}{3}$ to $\frac{1}{2}$ when the strength of the quenched disorder increases.

Simulated Tempering: A New Monte Carlo Scheme

We propose a new global optimization method ({\em Simulated Tempering}) for simulating effectively a system with a rough free energy landscape (i.e. many coexisting states) at finite non-zero temperature. This method is related to simulated annealing, but here the temperature becomes a dynamic variable, and the system is always kept at equilibrium. We analyze the method on the Random Field Ising Model, and we find a dramatic improvement over conventional Metropolis and cluster methods. We analyze and discuss the conditions under which the method has optimal performances.
