Set families with a forbidden pattern

A balanced pattern of order $2d$ is an element $P \in \{+,-\}^{2d}$, where both signs appear $d$ times. Two sets $A,B \subset [n]$ form $P$-pattern, which we denote by $\operatorname{pat}(A,B) = P$, if $A\triangle B = \{j_1,\ldots ,j_{2d}\}$ with $1\leq j_1<\cdots < j_{2d}\leq n$ and $\{i\in [2d]: P_i = + \} = \{i\in [2d]: j_i \in A \setminus B\}$. We say ${\cal A} \subset {\cal P}[n]$ is $P$-free if $\operatorname{pat}(A,B)\neq P$ for all $A,B \in {\cal A}$. We consider the following extremal question: how large can a family ${\cal A} \subset {\cal P}[n]$ be if ${\cal A} $ is $P$-free? We prove a number of results on the sizes of such families. In particular, we show that for some fixed $c>0$, if $P$ is a $d$-balanced pattern with $d < c \log \log n$ then $|{\cal A}| = o(2^n)$. We then give stronger bounds in the cases when (i) $P$ consists of $d$ $+$ signs, followed by $d$ $-$ signs and (ii) $P$ consists of alternating signs. In both cases, if $d = o(\sqrt n)$ then $|{\cal A} | = o(2^n)$. In the case of (i), this is tight. .

Long paths and cycles in subgraphs of the cube

Let $Q_n$ denote the graph of the $n$-dimensional cube with vertex set $\{0,1\}^n$ in which two vertices are adjacent if they differ in exactly one coordinate. Suppose $G$ is a subgraph of $Q_n$ with average degree at least $d$. How long a path can we guarantee to find in $G$? Our aim in this paper is to show that $G$ must contain an exponentially long path. In fact, we show that if $G$ has minimum degree at least $d$ then $G$ must contain a path of length $2^d-1$. Note that this bound is tight, as shown by a $d$-dimensional subcube of $Q_n$. We also obtain the slightly stronger result that $G$ must contain a cycle of length at least $2^d$ and prove analogous results for other `product-type' graphs.

Forbidding intersection patterns between layers of the cube

A family ${\mathcal A} \subset {\mathcal P} [n]$ is said to be an antichain if $A \not \subset B$ for all distinct $A,B \in {\mathcal A}$. A classic result of Sperner shows that such families satisfy $|{\mathcal A}| \leq \binom {n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, which is easily seen to be best possible. One can view the antichain condition as a restriction on the intersection sizes between sets in different layers of ${\mathcal P} [n]$. More generally one can ask, given a collection of intersection restrictions between the layers, how large can families respecting these restrictions be? Answering a question of Kalai, we show that for most collections of such restrictions, layered families are asymptotically largest. This extends results of Leader and the author.

Frankl-Rödl type theorems for codes and permutations

We give a new proof of the Frankl-Rödl theorem on forbidden intersections, via the probabilistic method of dependent random choice. Our method extends to codes with forbidden distances, where over large alphabets our bound is significantly better than that obtained by Frankl and Rödl. We also apply our bound to a question of Ellis on sets of permutations with forbidden distances, and to establish a weak form of a conjecture of Alon, Shpilka and Umans on sunflowers.

Forbidding a Set Difference of Size 1

How large can a family \cal A \subset \cal P [n] be if it does not contain A,B with |A\setminus B| = 1? Our aim in this paper is to show that any such family has size at most \frac{2+o(1)}{n} \binom {n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor }. This is tight up to a multiplicative constant of $2$. We also obtain similar results for families \cal A \subset \cal P[n] with |A\setminus B| \neq k, showing that they satisfy |{\mathcal A}| \leq \frac{C_k}{n^k}\binom {n}{\lfloor n/2\rfloor }, where C_k is a constant depending only on k.

Random walks on quasirandom graphs

Let G be a quasirandom graph on n vertices, and let W be a random walk on G of length alpha n^2. Must the set of edges traversed by W form a quasirandom graph? This question was asked by Böttcher, Hladký, Piguet and Taraz. Our aim in this paper is to give a positive answer to this question. We also prove a similar result for random embeddings of trees.

Long geodesics in subgraphs of the cube

A path in the hypercube $Q_n$ is said to be a geodesic if no two of its edges are in the same direction. Let $G$ be a subgraph of $Q_n$ with average degree $d$. How long a geodesic must $G$ contain? We show that $G$ must contain a geodesic of length $d$. This result, which is best possible, strengthens a theorem of Feder and Subi. It is also related to the `antipodal colourings' conjecture of Norine.

Tilted Sperner Families

Let \cal A be a family of subsets of an n-set such that \cal A does not contain distinct sets A and B with |A\B| = 2|B\A|. How large can \cal A be? Our aim in this note is to determine the maximum size of such an \cal A. This answers a question of Kalai. We also give some related results and conjectures.
