On the Relation between Optical Aperture and Automotive Object Detection

We explore the impact of aperture size and shape on automotive camera systems for deep-learning-based tasks like traffic sign recognition and light state detection. A method is proposed to simulate optical effects using the point spread function (PSF), enhancing realism and reducing the domain gap between synthetic and real-world images. Computer-generated scenes are refined with this technique to model optical distortions and improve simulation accuracy.

Seed-to-Seed: Unpaired Image Translation in Diffusion Seed Space

We introduce Seed-to-Seed Translation (StS), a novel approach that combines GANs and diffusion models (DMs) for unpaired Image-to-Image Translation. Our approach is aimed at global translations of complex automotive scenes, where close adherence to the structure and semantics of the source image is essential. We demonstrate that the semantic information encoded in the space of inverted latents (seeds) of a pretrained DM, dubbed as the seed-space, can be used for discriminative tasks, and leverage this information to perform image-to-image translation. Our method involves training an sts-GAN, an unpaired seed-to-seed translation model, based on CycleGAN. The translated seeds are used as the starting point for the DM's sampling process, while structure preservation is ensured using a ControlNet. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach for structure-preserving translation of complex automotive scenes, showcasing superior performance compared to existing GAN-based and diffusion-based methods. In addition to advancing the SoTA in automotive scene translations, our approach offers a fresh perspective on leveraging the semantic information encoded within the seed-space of pretrained DMs for effective image editing and manipulation.

S2ST: Image-to-Image Translation in the Seed Space of Latent Diffusion

Image-to-image translation (I2IT) refers to the process of transforming images from a source domain to a target domain while maintaining a fundamental connection in terms of image content. In the past few years, remarkable advancements in I2IT were achieved by Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), which nevertheless struggle with translations requiring high precision. Recently, Diffusion Models have established themselves as the engine of choice for image generation. In this paper we introduce S2ST, a novel framework designed to accomplish global I2IT in complex photorealistic images, such as day-to-night or clear-to-rain translations of automotive scenes. S2ST operates within the seed space of a Latent Diffusion Model, thereby leveraging the powerful image priors learned by the latter. We show that S2ST surpasses state-of-the-art GAN-based I2IT methods, as well as diffusion-based approaches, for complex automotive scenes, improving fidelity while respecting the target domain's appearance across a variety of domains. Notably, S2ST obviates the necessity for training domain-specific translation networks.
