On Commensurizer Growth

We study new asymptotic invariant of a pair consisting of a group and a subgroup, which we call Commensurizer Growth. We compute the commensurizer growth for several examples, concentrating mainly on the case of a locally compact topological group and a lattice inside it.

Regularity via topology of the lcm-lattice for $C_4$-free graphs

We study the topology of the lcm-lattice of edge ideals and derive upper bounds on the Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity of the ideals. In this context it is natural to restrict to the family of graphs with no induced 4-cycle in their complement. Using the above method we obtain sharp upper bounds on the regularity when the complement is a chordal graph, or a cycle, or when the primal graph is claw free with no induced 4-cycle in its complement. For the later family we show that the second power of the edge ideal has a linear resolution.

Remarks on missing faces and generalized lower bounds on face numbers

We consider simplicial polytopes, and more general simplicial complexes, without missing faces above a fixed dimension. Sharp analogues of McMullen's generalized lower bounds, and of Barnette's lower bounds, are conjectured for these families of complexes. Some partial results on these conjectures are presented.

Lefschetz Properties and Basic Constructions on Simplicial Spheres

The well known $g$-conjecture for homology spheres follows from the stronger conjecture that the face ring over the reals of a homology sphere, modulo a linear system of parameters, admits the strong-Lefschetz property. We prove that the strong-Lefschetz property is preserved under the following constructions on homology spheres: join, connected sum, and stellar subdivisions. The last construction is a step towards proving the $g$-conjecture for piecewise-linear spheres.

The Lefschetz property for barycentric subdivisions of shellable complexes

We show that an 'almost strong Lefschetz' property holds for the barycentric subdivision of a shellable complex. From this we conclude that for the barycentric subdivision of a Cohen-Macaulay complex, the $h$-vector is unimodal, peaks in its middle degree (one of them if the dimension of the complex is even), and that its $g$-vector is an $M$-sequence. In particular, the (combinatorial) $g$-conjecture is verified for barycentric subdivisions of homology spheres. In addition, using the above algebraic result, we derive new inequalities on a refinement of the Eulerian statistics on permutations, where permutations are grouped by the number of descents and the image of 1.

Algebraic Shifting and f-Vector Theory

This thesis focuses on algebraic shifting and its applications to f-vector theory of simplicial complexes and more general graded posets. In particular, several approaches and partial results concerning the g-conjecture for simplicial spheres are presented here.

On the independence complex of square grids

The enumeration of independent sets of regular graphs is of interest in statistical mechanics, as it corresponds to the solution of hard-particle models. In 2004, it was conjectured by Fendleyet al. that for some rectangular grids, with toric boundary conditions, the alternating number of independent sets is extremely simple. More precisely, under a coprimality condition on the sides of the rectangle, the number of independent sets of even and odd cardinality always differ by 1. In physics terms, this means looking at the hard-particle model on these grids at activity -1. This conjecture was recently proved by Jonsson. Here we produce other families of grid graphs, with open or cylindric boundary conditions, for which similar properties hold without any size restriction: the number of independent sets of even and odd cardinality always differ by 0, 1,-1, or, in the cylindric case, by some power of 2. We show that these results reflect a stronger property of the independence complexes of our graphs. We determine the homotopy type of these complexes using Forman's discrete Morse theory. We find that these complexes are either contractible, or homotopic to a sphere, or, in the cylindric case, to a wedge of spheres. Finally, we use our enumerative results to determine the spectra of certain transfer matrices describing the hard-particle model on our graphs at activity -1. These results parallel certain conjectures of Fendley et al., proved by Jonsson in the toric case.

Rigidity and the Lower Bound Theorem for Doubly Cohen-Macaulay Complexes

We prove that for $d\geq 3$, the 1-skeleton of any $(d-1)$-dimensional doubly Cohen Macaulay (abbreviated 2-CM) complex is generically $d$-rigid. This implies the following two corollaries (by Kalai and Lee respectively): Barnette's lower bound inequalities for boundary complexes of simplicial polytopes hold for every 2-CM complex (of dimension $\geq 2$). Moreover, the initial part $(g_0,g_1,g_2)$ of the $g$-vector of a 2-CM complex (of dimension $\geq 3$) is an $M$-sequence. It was conjectured by Björner and Swartz that the entire $g$-vector of a 2-CM complex is an $M$-sequence.

Algebraic Shifting and Basic Constructions on Simplicial Complexes

We try to understand the behavior of exterior algebraic shifting with respect to basic constructions on simplicial complexes, like union and join. In particular we give a complete combinatorial description of the shifting of a disjoint union, and more generally of a union along a simplex, in terms of the shifting of its components. As a corollary, we prove the following, conjectured by Kalai: $Δ(K \cup L) = Δ(Δ(K) \cup Δ(L))$, where $K,L$ are complexes, $\cup$ means disjoint union, and $Δ$ is the exterior shifting operator. We give an example showing that replacing the operation 'union' with the operation 'join' in the above equation is wrong, disproving a conjecture made by Kalai. We adopt a homological point of view on the algebraic shifting operator, which is used throughout this work.

A Generalized Macaulay Theorem and Generalized Face Rings

We prove that the $f$-vector of members in a certain class of meet semi-lattices satisfies Macaulay inequalities. We construct a large family of meet semi-lattices belonging to this class, which includes all posets of multicomplexes, as well as meet semi-lattices with the "diamond property", discussed by Wegner, as spacial cases. Specializing the proof to that later family, one obtains the Kruskal-Katona inequalities and their proof as in Wegner's. For geometric meet semi lattices we construct an analogue of the exterior face ring, generalizing the classic construction for simplicial complexes. For a more general class, which include also multicomplexes, we construct an analogue of the Stanley-Reisner ring. These two constructions provide algebraic counterparts (and thus also algebraic proofs) of Kruskal-Katona's and Macaulay's inequalities for these classes, respectively.

Embeddability and Stresses of Graphs

Gluck (1975) has proven that triangulated 2-spheres are generically 3-rigid. Equivalently, planar graphs are generically 3-stress free. We show that linklessly embeddable graphs are generically 4-stress free. Both of these results are corollaries of the following theorem: every K_{r+2}-minor free graph is generically r-stress free for 0 5.) We give an equivalent formulation of this theorem in the language of symmetric algebraic shifting and show that its analogue for exterior algebraic shifting also holds. Some further extensions are detailed.
