A cryogenic neutral-atom platform with full optical access and 2-hour trap lifetime

Neutral-atom quantum processors are rapidly scaling toward system sizes of more than ten thousand qubits, allowing for the realization of a new class of quantum computing algorithms and quantum simulation experiments. However, current neutral-atom platforms generally have to find a compromise between the optical accessibility and the storage time of atoms in optical potentials, limiting the available qubit numbers. Here we report on the operation of a novel, cryogenically enhanced, neutral-atom apparatus that overcomes these apparently conflicting requirements. We demonstrate vacuum-limited trapping lifetimes of up to two hours of single $^{88}\mathrm{Sr}$ atoms in an optical tweezer array while preserving full optical access and without the need for complex cryogenic enclosures. Our measurements show that exceptionally long single-atom lifetimes can be achieved with a relatively simple cryostat design. Our architecture can be straightforwardly ported to other atomic species and shows a viable path for scaling up to sorted arrays of tens of thousands of atoms.

Recoil-free Quantum Gates with Optical Qubits

We propose a scheme to perform optical pulses that suppress the effect of photon recoil by three orders of magnitude compared to ordinary pulses in the Lamb-Dicke regime. We derive analytical insight about the fundamental limits to the fidelity of optical qubits for trapped atoms and ions. This paves the way towards applications in quantum computing for realizing $>1000$ of gates with an overall fidelity above 99\%.

Optical quantum memory for noble-gas spins based on spin-exchange collisions

Optical quantum memories, which store and preserve the quantum state of photons, rely on a coherent mapping of the photonic state onto matter states that are optically accessible. Here we outline and characterize schemes to map the state of photons onto long-lived but optically-inaccessible collective states of noble-gas spins. The mapping employs coherent spin-exchange interaction arising from random collisions with alkali vapor. We propose efficient storage strategies in two operating regimes and analyze their performance for several proposed experimental configurations.

Optimal Strategies for Optical Quantum Memories Using Long-Lived Noble-Gas Spins

Nuclear spins of noble gases exhibit exceptionally long coherence times and can potentially serve as a long-lived storage medium for quantum information. We analyze and compare the performance of two mechanisms for mapping the quantum state of light onto the collective spin state of noble gases. The first mechanism utilizes collisional exchange with the electronic spin state of metastable noble-gas atoms, while the second relies on spin-exchange collisions with ground-state alkali-metal atoms. We describe the operation of an optical quantum memory relying on these two mechanisms using a compact model and study strategies that optimize the memory storage efficiency. Through numerical simulations, we identify optimal sequences for storing optical signals with different signal bandwidths and electronic spin relaxation rates. This work highlights the qualitative difference between the two approaches for using noble gases as long-lived quantum memories at non-cryogenic conditions and outlines the regimes in which they are expected to be efficient.
