Static Tidal Perturbations of Relativistic Stars: Corrected Center Expansion and Love Numbers-I

We revisit static tidal perturbations of relativistic stars with emphasis on two technical issues in the standard quadrupolar formulation. First, we derive the regular-center Frobenius expansion of the interior even-parity master function and obtain a corrected subleading coefficient, which differs from the expression commonly used in the literature. Second, we derive the static even-parity master equation on a Schwarzschild-de Sitter background, extending the usual asymptotically flat problem to a two-horizon geometry. To place these results on a common footing, we also show how the general interior even-parity system in Regge-Wheeler gauge reduces to the standard quadrupolar equation used in Love-number calculations. Numerical integrations for polytropic equations of state show that the corrected center coefficient affects only subleading initial data and leaves the extracted Love number $k_2$ unchanged within numerical accuracy. Taken together, these results fix the regular-center input to the standard quadrupolar problem and extend the static even-parity formalism to Schwarzschild-de Sitter backgrounds.

Kerr-Schild perturbations in higher derivative gravity theories in $D$ dimensions

We study Kerr-Schild perturbations of a ghost-free, generic non-local gravity theory constructed from an infinite series of higher derivative terms in $D$ dimensions. The infinite series of higher derivative terms are encoded by form factors, the forms of which can be restricted by requiring that the action remains perturbatively free of ghosts and tachyons around maximally symmetric backgrounds for transverse traceless fluctuations. To demonstrate this, we obtain field equations for AdS plane wave metric in Kerr-Schild form, which yield linearized field equations for transverse-traceless spin-$2$ field. Using unitarity and consistency requirements, we obtain, as an example, the explicit derivation of non-local form factors in $D$ dimensions.

Solutions with pure radiation and gyratons in 3D massive gravity theories

We find exact solutions of topologically massive gravity (TMG) and new massive gravity (NMG) in ${2+1}$ dimensions (3D) with an arbitrary cosmological constant, pure radiation, and gyratons, i.e., with possibly non-zero $T_{uu}$ and $T_{ux}$ in canonical coordinates. Since any `reasonable' geometry in 3D (i.e., admitting a null geodesic congruence) is either expanding Robinson-Trautman ($Θ\neq 0$) or Kundt (${Θ=0}$), we focus on these two classes. Assuming expansions ${Θ=1/r}$ (`GR-like' Robinson-Trautman) or ${Θ=0}$ (general Kundt), we systematically integrate the field equations of TMG and NMG and identify new classes of exact solutions. The case of NMG contains an additional assumption of $g_{ux}$ being quadratic in $r$, which is automatically enforced in TMG as well as in 3D GR. In each case, we reduce the field equations as much as possible and identify new classes of solutions. We also discuss various special subclasses and study some explicit solutions.

Anomalous Dispersion in Gravity Theories

A wave pulse (be it a gravitational wave or a light wave) undergoes anomalous dispersion in a vacuum in flat spacetimes with an even number of spatial dimensions even if all the frequencies move at the same speed. Such an anomalous dispersion does not occur in spacetimes with an odd number of spatial dimensions. We study various gravity theories and show that dispersion-free propagation is possible in even number of spatial dimensions if the background is not the Minkowski but the de Sitter spacetime and the gravity theory is massive gravity with a tuned mass in terms of the cosmological constant. Mass and the cosmological constant conspire to get rid of the anomalous dispersion and restore Huygens' principle.

New Chiral Generalized Minimal Massive Gravity

We study the generalized minimal massive gravity (GMMG) in Compere, Song and Strominger boundary conditions employing a semi-product of a Virasoro and a $\hat{u}(1)$ Kac-Moody current algebras as the asymptotic symmetry algebra. We calculate the entropy of BTZ black holes via the degeneracy of states belonging to a Warped-CFT. We compute the linearized energy excitations by using the representations of the algebra $\hat{u}(1) \times SL(2,R)_R$ and show that energies of excitations are non-negative at (two) chiral points in the parameter space. At these special points, the charge algebra is described by either Virasoro algebra or Kac-Moody algebra. We also consider some special limits of the GMMG theory which correspond to $2+1$-dimensional massive gravity theories such as new massive and minimal massive gravity theories.

Exact gyratons in higher and infinite derivative gravity

We study solutions describing spinning null sources called gyratons in generic theories of gravity with terms that are quadratic in curvature and contain an arbitrary number of covariant derivatives. In particular, we show that the properties of pp-waves of the algebraic type III allow for extreme simplification of the field equations. It turns out that the resulting differential equations are exactly solvable due to partial decoupling and linearity of the equations. This is demonstrated explicitly by finding axially symmetric gyraton solutions in Stelle's fourth derivative gravity and the non-local gravity with an infinite number of derivatives.

$pp$-waves as exact solutions to ghost-free infinite derivative gravity

We construct exact pp-wave solutions of ghost-free infinite derivative gravity and demonstrate that the sourceless theory does not bring any pp-wave solutions save for that of Einstein's gravity. These waves described in the Kerr-Schild form also solve the linearized field equations of the theory. We also find an exact gravitational shock wave with non-singular curvature invariants and with a finite limit in the ultraviolet regime of non-locality which is in contrast to the divergent limit in Einstein's theory.

Einstein-Yang-Mills Theory: Gauge Invariant Charges and Linearization Instability

We construct the gauge-invariant electric and magnetic charges in Yang-Mills theory coupled to cosmological General Relativity (or any other geometric gravity), extending the flat spacetime construction of Abbott and Deser. For non-vanishing background gauge fields, the charges receive non-trivial contribution from the gravity part. In addition, we study the constraints on the first order perturbation theory and establish the conditions for linearization instability: that is the validity of the first order perturbation theory.

Lee-Wald Charge and Asymptotic Behaviors of the Weyl-invariant Topologically Massive Gravity

We apply the Lee-Wald covariant phase space method to the Weyl-invariant Topologically Massive Gravity and compute the corresponding on-shell conserved charges. By using appropriate decay conditions for the existing propagating modes in the near-horizon of a stationary black hole, we obtain the charges generating the asymptotic symmetries. We show that the charges are integrable and the (modified) algebras among the asymptotic generators are closed for the certain choice of central extensions.

Impulsive waves in ghost free infinite derivative gravity in anti-de Sitter spacetime

We study exact impulsive gravitational waves propagating in anti-de Sitter spacetime in the context of the ghost free infinite derivative gravity. We show that the source-free theory does not admit any AdS wave solutions other than that of Einstein's general relativity. The situation is significantly different in the presence of sources. We construct impulsive-wave solutions of the infinite derivative gravity generated by massless particles and linear sources in four and three dimensions. The singularities corresponding to distributional curvature at the locations of the sources get smeared by the non-localities. The obtained solutions are regular everywhere. They reduce to the corresponding solutions of general relativity in the infrared regime and in the local limit.

High temperature behavior of non-local observables in boosted strongly coupled plasma: A holographic study

In this work, we perform a holographic analysis to study non local observables associated to a uniformly \textit{boosted} strongly coupled large $N$ thermal plasma in $d$-dimensions. In order to accomplish the holographic analysis, the appropriate dual bulk theory turns out to be $d+1$ dimensional \textit{boosted} AdS-Schwarzschild blackhole background. In particular, we compute entanglement entropy of the boosted plasma at high temperature living inside a strip geometry with entangling width $l$ in the boundary at a particular instant of time. We also study the two-point correlators in the boundary by following geodesic approximation method. For analyzing the effect of boosting on the thermal plasma and correspondingly on both non local observables, we keep the alignment of the width of region of interest both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of the boost. We find our results significantly modified compared to those in un-boosted plasma up to the quadratic order of the boost velocity $v$. More interestingly, the relative orientation of the boost and the entangling width plays a crucial role to quantify the holographic entanglement entropy in the boundary theory. The breaking of rotational symmetry in the boundary theory due to the boosting of the plasma along a specific flat direction causes this interesting feature.

Exotic Massive Gravity: Causality and a Birkhoff-like Theorem

We study the local causality issue via the Shapiro time-delay computations in the on-shell consistent exotic massive gravity in three dimensions. The theory shows time-delay as opposed to time-advance despite having a ghost at the linearized level both for asymptotically flat and anti-de Sitter spacetimes. We also prove a Birkhoff-like theorem: any solution with a hypersurface orthogonal non-null Killing vector field is conformally flat; and find some exact solutions.

On memory effect in modified gravity theories

In this note, we discuss the gravitational memory effect in higher derivative and infinite derivative gravity theories and give the detailed relevant calculations whose results were given in our recent works. We show that the memory effect in higher derivative gravity takes the same form as in pure GR at large distances, whereas at small distances, the results are different. We also demonstrated that, in infinite derivative gravity, the memory is reduced via error function as compared to Einstein's gravity. For the lower bound on the mass scale of non-locality, the memory is essentially reproduces the usual GR result at distances above at very small distances.

Graviton Mass and Memory

Gravitational memory, a residual change, arises after a finite gravitational wave pulse interacts with free masses. We calculate the memory effect in massive gravity as a function of the graviton mass $(m_g)$ and show that it is discretely different from the result of general relativity: the memory is reduced not just via the usual expected Yukawa decay but by a numerical factor which survives even in the massless limit. For the strongest existing bounds on the graviton mass, the memory is essentially wiped out for the sources located at distances above 10 Mpc. On the other hand, for the weaker bounds found in the LIGO observations, the memory is reduced to zero for distances above 0.1 Pc. Hence, we suggest that careful observations of the gravitational wave memory effect can rule out the graviton mass or significantly bound it. We also show that adding higher curvature terms reduces the memory effect.

Weak Field Limit of Infinite Derivative Gravity

A form of infinite derivative gravity is free from ghost-like instabilities with improved small scale behavior. In this theory, we calculate the tree-level scattering amplitude and the corresponding weak field potential energy between two localized covariantly conserved spinning point-like sources that also have velocities and orbital motion. We show that the spin-spin and spin-orbit interactions take the same form as in Einstein's gravity at large separations, whereas at small separations, the results are different. We find that not only the usual Newtonian potential energy but also the spin-spin and spin-orbit interaction terms in the potential energy are non-singular as one approaches r->0.

Topologically Massive Gravity: Anyon Scattering, Weyl-Gauging and Causality

In this thesis, we studied the Topologically Massive Gravity (TMG) in two perspectives. Firstly, by using real scalar and abelian gauge fields, we built the Weyl-invariant extension of TMG which unifies cosmological TMG and Topologically Massive Electrodynamics (TME) with a Proca mass term. Here, we have demonstrated that the presence of (Anti)-de Sitter spaces as the background solution, spontaneously breaks the local Weyl symmetry, whereas the radiative corrections at two-loop level breaks the symmetry in flat vacuum. The breaking of Weyl symmetry fixes all the dimensionful parameters and provides masses to spin-2 and spin-1 particles as in the Higgs mechanism. Secondly, we calculated the tree-level scattering amplitude in the cosmological TMG plus the Fierz-Pauli mass term in (Anti)-de Sitter spaces and accordingly found the relevant weak field potential energies between two covariantly conserved localized point-like spinning sources. We have shown that in addition to spin-spin and mass-mass interactions, there also occurs a mass-spin interaction which is generated by the gravitational Chern-Simons term that changes the initial spin of particles converting them to gravitational anyons. In addition to these works concerning TMG, we have also discussed the issue of local causality in $2+1$ dimensional gravity theories and shown that Einstein's gravity, TMG and the new massive gravity are causal as long as the sign of the Newton's constant is set to negative. We study the causality discussion with the Shapiro time delay method.

Unitarity Problems in 3$D$ Gravity Theories

We revisit the problem of the bulk-boundary unitarity clash in 2 + 1 dimensional gravity theories, which has been an obstacle in providing a viable dual two-dimensional conformal field theory for bulk gravity in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime. Chiral gravity, which is a particular limit of cosmological topologically massive gravity (TMG), suffers from pertur- bative log-modes with negative energies inducing a non-unitary logarithmic boundary field theory. We show here that any f(R) extension of TMG does not improve the situation. We also study the perturbative modes in the metric formulation of minimal massive gravity- originally constructed in a first-order formulation-and find that the massive mode has again negative energy except in the chiral limit. We comment on this issue and also discuss a possible solution to the problem of negative energy modes. In any of these theories, the infinitesimal dangerous deformations might not be integrable to full solutions; this suggests a linearization instability of AdS spacetime in the direction of the perturbative log-modes.

Causality in 3D Massive Gravity Theories

We study the constraints coming from local causality requirement in various $2+1$ dimensional dynamical theories of gravity. In topologically massive gravity, with a single parity non-invariant massive degree of freedom, and in new massive gravity, with two massive spin-$2$ degrees of freedom, causality and unitarity are compatible with each other and both require the Newton's constant to be negative. In their extensions, such as the Born-Infeld gravity and the minimal massive gravity the situation is similar and quite different from their higher dimensional counterparts, such as quadratic (e.g., Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet) or cubic theories, where causality and unitarity are in conflict. We study the problem both in asymptotically flat and asymptotically anti-de Sitter spaces.
