Quadratic Spaces and Orthogonal Groups over semilocal Rings

We prove Springer's Odd Degree Theorem for quadratic forms over LG rings, and Scharlau's and Knebusch's norm principles for quadratic forms over semilocal rings. We present applications to the flat cohomology of spin groups and {\'e}tale norm groups.

Group schemes over LG-rings and applications to cancellation theorems and Azumaya algebras

We prove several results on reductive group schemes over LG-rings, e.g., existence of maximal tori and conjugacy of parabolic subgroups. These were proven in SGA3 for the special case of semilocal rings. We apply these results to establish cancellation theorems for hermitian and quadratic forms over LG-rings and show that the Brauer classes of Azumaya algebras over connected LG-rings have a unique representative and allow Brauer decomposition.

The Norm Functor over Schemes

We construct a globalization of Ferrand's norm functor over rings which generalizes it to the setting of a finite locally free morphism of schemes $T\to S$ of constant rank. It sends quasi-coherent modules over $T$ to quasi-coherent modules over $S$. These functors restrict to the category of quasi-coherent algebras. We also assemble these functors into a norm morphism from the stack of quasi-coherent modules over a finite locally free of constant rank extension of the base scheme into the stack of quasi-coherent modules. This morphism also restricts to the analogous stacks of algebras. Restricting our attention to finite \'etale covers, we give a cohomological description of the norm morphism in terms of the Segre embedding. Using this cohomological description, we show that the norm gives an equivalence of stacks of algebras $A_1^2 \equiv D_2$, akin to the result shown in The Book of Involutions.

Azumaya Algebras and Obstructions to Quadratic Pairs over a Scheme

We investigate quadratic pairs for Azumaya algebras with involutions over a base scheme S as defined by Calm{\`e}s and Fasel, generalizing the case of quadratic pairs on central simple algebras over a field (Knus, Merkurjev, Rost, Tignol). We describe a cohomological obstruction for an Azumaya algebra over S with orthogonal involution to admit a quadratic pair. When S is affine this obstruction vanishes, however it is non-trivial in general. In particular, we construct explicit examples with non-trivial obstructions.

Springer's odd degree extension theorem for quadratic forms over semilocal rings

A fundamental result of Springer says that a quadratic form over a field of characteristic not 2 is isotropic if it is so after an odd degree extension. In this paper we generalize Springer's theorem as follows. Let R be a an arbitrary semilocal ring, let S be a finite R-algebra of constant odd degree, which is {\'e}tale or generated by one element, and let q be a nonsingular R-quadratic form whose base ring extension q S is isotropic. We show that then q is already isotropic.

Conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras in EALAs with a non-fgc centreless core

We establish the conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for extended affine Lie algebras whose centreless core is "of type A", i.e., matrices over a quantum torus Q whose trace lies in the commutator space of Q. This settles the last outstanding part of the conjugacy problem for Extended Affine Lie Algebras that remained open.

On conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras in extended affine Lie algebras

That finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras over the complex numbers can be classified by means of purely combinatorial and geometric objects such as Coxeter-Dynkin diagrams and indecomposable irreducible root systems, is arguably one of the most elegant results in mathematics. The definition of the root system is done by fixing a Cartan subalgebra of the given Lie algebra. The remarkable fact is that (up to isomorphism) this construction is independent of the choice of the Cartan subalgebra. The modern way of establishing this fact is by showing that all Cartan subalgebras are conjugate. For symmetrizable Kac-Moody Lie algebras, with the appropriate definition of Cartan subalgebra, conjugacy has been established by Peterson and Kac. An immediate consequence of this result is that the root systems and generalized Cartan matrices are invariants of the Kac-Moody Lie algebras. The purpose of this paper is to establish conjugacy of Cartan subalgebras for extended affine Lie algebras; a natural class of Lie algebras that generalizes the finite-dimensional simple Lie algebra and affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras.

Integrable representations of root-graded Lie algebras

The essential feature of a root-graded Lie algebra L is the existence of a split semisimple subalgebra g with respect to which L is an integrable module with weights in a possibly non-reduced root system S of the same rank as the root system R of g. Examples include map algebras (maps from an affine scheme to g, S = R), matrix algebras like sl_n(A) for a unital associative algebra A (S = R = A_{n-1}), finite-dimensional isotropic central-simple Lie algebras (S properly contains R in general), and some equivariant map algebras. In this paper we study the category of representations of a root-graded Lie algebra L which are integrable as representations of g and whose weights are bounded by some dominant weight of g. We link this category to the module category of an associative algebra, whose structure we determine for map algebras and sl_n(A). Our results unify previous work of Chari and her collaborators on map algebras and of Seligman on isotropic Lie algebras.

Étale Descent of Derivations

We study étale descent of derivations of algebras with values in a module. The algebras under consideration are twisted forms of algebras over rings, and apply to all classes of algebras, notably associative and Lie algebras, such as the multiloop algebras that appear in the construction of extended affine Lie algebras.

Irreducible finite-dimensional representations of equivariant map algebras

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme X and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra g. The corresponding equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra M of equivariant regular maps from X to g. We classify the irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras. In particular, we show that all such representations are tensor products of evaluation representations and one-dimensional representations, and we establish conditions ensuring that they are all evaluation representations. For example, this is always the case if M is perfect. Our results can be applied to multiloop algebras, current algebras, the Onsager algebra, and the tetrahedron algebra. Doing so, we easily recover the known classifications of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras. Moreover, we obtain previously unknown classifications of irreducible finite-dimensional representations of other types of equivariant map algebras, such as the generalized Onsager algebra.

Lie tori of type B_2 and graded-simple Jordan structures covered by a triangle

We classify two classes of B_2-graded Lie algebras which have a second compatible grading by an abelian group A: (a) graded-simple Lie algebras for A torsion-free and (b) division-A-graded Lie algebras. Our results describe the centreless cores of a class of affine reflection Lie algebras, hence apply in particular to the centreless cores of extended affine Lie algebras, the so-called Lie tori, for which we recover results of Allison-Gao and Faulkner. Our classification (b) extends a recent result of Benkart-Yoshii. Both classifications are consequences of a new description of Jordan algebras covered by a triangle, which correspond to these Lie algebras via the Tits-Kantor-Koecher construction. The Jordan algebra classifications follow from our results on graded-triangulated Jordan triple systems. They generalize work of McCrimmon and the first author as well as the Osborn-McCrimmon-Capacity-2-Theorem in the ungraded case.

Basic polynomial invariants, fundamental representations and the Chern class map

Consider a crystallographic root system together with its Weyl group $W$ acting on the weight lattice $M$. Let $Z[M]^W$ and $S^*(M)^W$ be the $W$-invariant subrings of the integral group ring $Z[M]$ and the symmetric algebra $S^*(M)$ respectively. A celebrated theorem of Chevalley says that $Z[M]^W$ is a polynomial ring over $Z$ in classes of fundamental representations $w_1,...,w_n$ and $S^*(M)^{W}$ over rational numbers is a polynomial ring in basic polynomial invariants $q_1,...,q_n$, where $n$ is the rank. In the present paper we establish and investigate the relationship between $w_i$'s and $q_i$'s over the integers. As an application we provide an annihilator of the torsion part of the 3rd and the 4th quotients of the Grothendieck gamma-filtration on the variety of Borel subgroups of the associated linear algebraic group.

Universal central extensions of direct limits of Lie superalgebras

We show that the universal central extension of a direct limit of perfect Lie superalgebras L_i is (isomorphic to) the direct limit of the universal central extensions of L_i. As an application we describe the universal central extensions of some infinite rank Lie superalgebras.

Extensions and block decompositions for finite-dimensional representations of equivariant map algebras

Suppose a finite group acts on a scheme $X$ and a finite-dimensional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$. The associated equivariant map algebra is the Lie algebra of equivariant regular maps from $X$ to $\mathfrak{g}$. The irreducible finite-dimensional representations of these algebras were classified in previous work with P. Senesi, where it was shown that they are all tensor products of evaluation representations and one-dimensional representations. In the current paper, we describe the extensions between irreducible finite-dimensional representations of an equivariant map algebra in the case that $X$ is an affine scheme of finite type and $\mathfrak{g}$ is reductive. This allows us to also describe explicitly the blocks of the category of finite-dimensional representations in terms of spectral characters, whose definition we extend to this general setting. Applying our results to the case of generalized current algebras (the case where the group acting is trivial), we recover known results but with very different proofs. For (twisted) loop algebras, we recover known results on block decompositions (again with very different proofs) and new explicit formulas for extensions. Finally, specializing our results to the case of (twisted) multiloop algebras and generalized Onsager algebras yields previously unknown results on both extensions and block decompositions.

Lectures on extended affine Lie algebras

We give an introduction to the structure theory of extended affine Lie algebras, which provide a common framework for finite-dimensional semisimple, affine and toroidal Lie algebras. The notes are based on a lecture series given during the Fields Institute summer school at the University of Ottawa in June 2009.
