Good Moduli Spaces in Derived Algebraic Geometry

We develop a theory of good moduli spaces for derived Artin stacks, which naturally generalizes the classical theory of good moduli spaces introduced by Alper. As such, many of the fundamental results and properties regarding good moduli spaces for classical Artin stacks carry over to the derived context. In fact, under natural assumptions, often satisfied in practice, we show that the derived theory essentially reduces to the classical theory. As applications, we establish derived versions of the étale slice theorem for good moduli spaces and the partial desingularization procedure of good moduli spaces.

Schur $σ$-groups of type $(3,3)$ for $p=3$

For any imaginary quadratic field $K$, the Galois group $G_K$ of its maximal unramified pro-$3$-extension is a Schur $σ$-group. If this has Zassenhaus type $(3,3)$, there are 13 possibilities for the isomorphism class of the finite quotient $G_K/D_4(G_K)$. We prove that for 10 of these 13 cases $G_K$ is either finite or isomorphic to an open subgroup of a form of $\mathop{\rm PGL}_2$ over $\mathbb{Q}_3$. Combined with the Fontaine-Mazur conjecture, or with earlier work on an analogue of the Cohen--Lenstra heuristic for Schur $σ$-groups, this lends credence to the "if" part of a conjecture of McLeman. Using explicit computations of triple Massey products, we also test the heuristic for all imaginary quadratic fields $K$ with $d(G_K)=2$ and discriminant $-10^8 < d_K < 0$ and find a reasonably good agreement.

The étale cohomology ring of a punctured arithmetic curve

We compute the cohomology ring $H^*(U,\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z})$ for $U=X\setminus S$ where $X$ is the spectrum of the ring of integers of a number field $K$ and $S$ is a finite set of finite primes. As a consequence, we obtain an efficient way to compute presentations of $Q_2(G_S)$, where $G_S$ is Galois group of the maximal extension of $K$ unramified outside of a finite set of primes $S$, for varying $K$. This includes the following cases (for $p$ any prime dividing $n$): $μ_p(\overline{K}) \not\subseteq K$; $S$ does not contain the primes above $p$; and $p=2$ with $K$ admitting real archimedean places. We also show how to recover the classical reciprocity law of the Legendre symbol from the graded commutativity of the cup product.

Massey products in the étale cohomology of number fields

We give formulas for 3-fold Massey products in the étale cohomology of the ring of integers of a number field and use these to find the first known examples of imaginary quadratic fields with class group of $p$-rank two possessing an infinite $p$-class field tower, where $p$ is an odd prime. Furthermore, a necessary and sufficient condition, in terms of class groups of $p$-extensions, for the vanishing of 3-fold Massey products is given. As a consequence, we give an elementary and sufficient condition for the infinitude of class field towers of imaginary quadratic fields. We also disprove McLeman's $(3,3)$-conjecture. Lastly, we relate the vanishing of Massey products to the existence of Galois representations of $G_{\mathbb{Q},S}$ which realize an unexpectedly large class group for certain extensions of a quadratic imaginary number field.

Building Data for Stacky Covers

We define stacky building data for stacky covers in the spirit of Pardini and give an equivalence of (2,1)-categories between the category of stacky covers and the category of stacky building data. We show that every stacky cover is a flat root stack in the sense of Olsson and Borne--Vistoli and give an intrinsic description of it as a root stack using stacky building data. When the base scheme S is defined over a field, we give a criterion for when a birational building datum comes from a tamely ramified cover for a finite abelian group scheme, generalizing a result of Biswas--Borne.
