Linear and nonlinear stability for the Bach flow, I

In this paper we prove the linear stability of a gauge-modified version of the Bach flow on any complete manifold (M, h) of constant curvature. This involves some intricate calculations to obtain spectral bounds, and in particular introduces a higher order generalization of the well-known Koiso identity. We also prove nonlinear stability for the Bach flow if (M, h) is hyperbolic space, and more generally any Poincar\'e-Einstein space sufficiently close to h. In the forthcoming Part II of this project, we study the nonlinear stability question if M is either compact or else noncompact and flat, since those cases require different considerations involving a center manifold.

Deformations of the Kerr-(A)dS Near Horizon Geometry

We investigate deformations of the Kerr-(A)dS near horizon geometry and derive partial infinitesimal rigidity results for it. The proof comprises two parts. First, we follow the analysis of Jezierski and Kami\'nski [Gen Rel Grav 45 (2013) 987--1004] to eliminate all but a finite number of Fourier modes of linear perturbations. In the second part, we give an argument using analyticity to prove that there are no odd Fourier modes.

Rigidity of quasi-Einstein metrics: The incompressible case

As part of a programme to classify quasi-Einstein metrics $(M,g,X)$ on closed manifolds and near-horizon geometries of extreme black holes, we study such spaces when the vector field $X$ is divergence-free but not identically zero. This condition is satisfied by left-invariant quasi-Einstein metrics on compact homogeneous spaces (including the near-horizon geometry of an extreme Myers-Perry black hole with equal angular momenta in two distinct planes), and on certain bundles over K\"ahler-Einstein manifolds. We find that these spaces exhibit a mild form of rigidity: they always admit a one-parameter group of isometries generated by $X$. Further geometrical and topological restrictions are also obtained.

Convergence stability for Ricci flow on manifolds with bounded geometry

We prove that the Ricci flow for complete metrics with bounded geometry depends continuously on initial conditions for finite time with no loss of regularity. This relies on our recent work where sectoriality for the generator of the Ricci-DeTurck flow is proved. We use this to prove that for initial metrics sufficiently close in H\"older norm to a rotationally symmetric asymptotically hyperbolic metric and satisfying a simple curvature condition, but a priori distant from the hyperbolic metric, Ricci flow converges to the hyperbolic metric.

Wellposedness of nonlinear flows on manifolds of bounded geometry

We present simple conditions which ensure that a strongly elliptic operator $L$ generates an analytic semigroup on H\"older spaces on an arbitrary complete manifold of bounded geometry. This is done by establishing the equivalent property that $L$ is "sectorial", a condition that specifies the decay of the resolvent $(\lambda I - L)^{-1}$ as $\lambda$ diverges from the H\"older spectrum of $L$. As one step, we prove existence of this resolvent if $\lambda$ is sufficiently large, and on this general class of manifolds, use a geometric microlocal version of the semiclassical pseudodifferential calculus. The properties of $L$ and $e^{-tL}$ we obtain can then be used to prove wellposedness of a wide class of nonlinear flows. We illustrate this by proving wellposedness on H\"older spaces of the flow associated to the ambient obstruction tensor on complete manifolds of bounded geometry.

Static near horizon geometries and rigidity of quasi-Einstein manifolds

Static vacuum near horizon geometries are solutions $(M,g,X)$ of a certain quasi-Einstein equation on a closed manifold $M$, where $g$ is a Riemannian metric and $X$ is a closed 1-form. It is known that when the cosmological constant vanishes, there is rigidity: $X$ vanishes and consequently $g$ is Ricci flat. We study this form of rigidity for all signs of the cosmological constant. It has been asserted that this rigidity also holds when the cosmological constant is negative, but we exhibit a counter-example. We show that for negative cosmological constant if $X$ does not vanish identically, it must be incompressible, have constant norm, and be nontrivial in cohomology, and $(M,g)$ must have constant scalar curvature and zero Euler characteristic. If the cosmological constant is positive, $X$ must be exact (and vanishing if $\dim M=2$). Our results apply more generally to a broad class of quasi-Einstein equations on closed manifolds. We extend some known results for quasi-Einstein metrics with exact 1-form $X$ to the closed $X$ case. We consider near horizon geometries for which the vacuum condition is relaxed somewhat to allow for the presence of a limited class of matter fields. An appendix contains a generalization of a result of Lucietti on the Yamabe type of quasi-Einstein compact metrics (with arbitrary $X$).

Sectoriality of the Laplacian on Asymptotically Hyperbolic Spaces

We prove that both the Laplacian on functions, and the Lichnerowicz Laplacian on symmetric 2-tensors with respect to asymptotically hyperbolic metrics, are sectorial maps in weighted H\"older spaces. As an application, the machinery of analytic semigroups then applies to yield well-posedness results for parabolic evolution equations in these spaces.

Geometrically finite Poincar\'e-Einstein metrics

We construct new examples of Einstein metrics by perturbing the conformal infinity of geometrically finite hyperbolic metrics and by applying the inverse function theorem in suitable weighted H\"older spaces.

Apollonian sets in taxicab geometry

Fix two points $p$ and $q$ in the plane and a positive number $k \neq 1$. A result credited to Apollonius of Perga states that the set of points $x$ that satisfy $d(x, p)/d(x, q) = k$ forms a circle. In this paper we study the analogous set in taxicab geometry. We find that while Apollonian sets are not taxicab circles, more complicated Apollonian sets can be characterized in terms of simpler ones.

Convergence Stability for Ricci Flow

The principle of convergence stability for geometric flows is the combination of the continuous dependence of the flow on initial conditions, with the stability of fixed points. It implies that if the flow from an initial state $g_0$ exists for all time and converges to a stable fixed point, then the flows of solutions that start near $g_0$ also converge to fixed points. We show this in the case of the Ricci flow, carefully proving the continuous dependence on initial conditions. Symmetry assumptions on initial geometries are often made to simplify geometric flow equations. As an application of our results, we extend known convergence results to open sets of these initial data, which contain geometries with no symmetries.

Low regularity Poincar\'e-Einstein metrics

We prove the existence of a $C^{1,1}$ conformally compact Einstein metric on the ball that has asymptotic sectional curvature decay to $-1$ plus terms of order $e^{-2r}$ where $r$ is the distance from any fixed compact set. This metric has no $C^2$ conformal compactification.

Ricci Flow and Volume Renormalizability

With respect to any special boundary defining function, a conformally compact asymptotically hyperbolic metric has an asymptotic expansion near its conformal infinity. If this expansion is even to a certain order and satisfies one extra condition, then it is possible to define its renormalized volume and show that it is independent of choices that preserve this evenness structure. We prove that such expansions are preserved under normalized Ricci flow. We also study the variation of curvature functionals in this setting, and as one application, obtain the variation formula $$ \frac{{\rm d}}{{\rm d}t} {\rm RenV}\big(M^n, g(t)\big) = -\mathop{\vphantom{T}}^R \! \! \! \int_{M^n} (S(g(t))+n(n-1)) {\rm d}V_{g(t)},$$ where $S(g(t))$ is the scalar curvature for the evolving metric $g(t)$, and $\mathop{\vphantom{T}}^R \! \! \! \int (\cdot) {\rm d}V_g$ is Riesz renormalization. This extends our earlier work to a broader class of metrics.

Long-time existence of the edge Yamabe flow

This article presents an analysis of the normalized Yamabe flow starting at and preserving a class of compact Riemannian manifolds with incomplete edge singularities and negative Yamabe invariant. Our main results include uniqueness, long-time existence and convergence of the edge Yamabe flow starting at a metric with everywhere negative scalar curvature. Our methods include novel maximum principle results on the singular edge space without using barrier functions. Moreover, our uniform bounds on solutions are established by a new ansatz without in any way using or redeveloping Krylov-Safonov estimates in the singular setting. As an application we obtain a solution to the Yamabe problem for incomplete edge metrics with negative Yamabe invariant using flow techniques. Our methods lay groundwork for studying other flows like the mean curvature flow as well as the porous medium equation in the singular setting.

Asymptotically hyperbolic normalized Ricci flow and rotational symmetry

We consider the normalized Ricci flow evolving from an initial metric which is conformally compactifiable and asymptotically hyperbolic. We show that there is a unique evolving metric which remains in this class, and that the flow exists up to the time where the norm of the Riemann tensor diverges. Restricting to initial metrics which belong to this class and are rotationally symmetric, we prove that if the sectional curvature in planes tangent to the orbits of symmetry is initially nonpositive, the flow starting from such an initial metric exists for all time. Moreover, if the sectional curvature in planes tangent to these orbits is initially negative, the flow converges at an exponential rate to standard hyperbolic space. This restriction on sectional curvature automatically rules out initial data admitting a minimal hypersphere.

Uniqueness for Some Higher-Order Geometric Flows

We show that solutions to certain higher-order intrinsic geometric flows on a compact manifold, including some flows generated by the ambient obstruction tensor, are unique. With the goal of providing a complete self-contained proof, details surrounding map covariant derivatives and a careful application of the DeTurck trick are provided.

Renormalized volume and the evolution of APEs

We study the evolution of the renormalized volume functional for asymptotically Poincare-Einstein metrics (M,g) which are evolving by normalized Ricci flow. In particular, we prove that the time derivative of the renormalized volume along the flow is the negative integral of scal(g(t)) + n(n-1) over the manifold. This implies that if scal(g(0))+n(n-1) is non-negative at t=0, then the renormalized volume decreases monotonically. We also discuss how, when n=4, our results describe the Hawking-Page phase transition. Differences in renormalized volumes give rigorous meaning to the Hawking-Page difference of actions and describe the free energy liberated in the transition.

Yamabe flow on manifolds with edges

Let (M,g) be a compact oriented Riemannian manifold with an incomplete edge singularity. This article shows that it is possible to evolve g by the Yamabe flow within a class of singular edge metrics. As the main analytic step we establish parabolic Schauder-type estimates for the heat operator on certain Hölder spaces adapted to the singular edge geometry. We apply these estimates to obtain local existence for a variety of quasilinear equations, including the Yamabe flow. This provides a setup for a subsequent discussion of the Yamabe problem using flow techniques in the singular setting.
