An asymptotic formula for the displacement field in the presence of small anisotropic elastic inclusions

We derive asymptotic expansions for the displacement at the boundary of a smooth, elastic body in the presence of small inhomogeneities. Both the body and the inclusions are allowed to be anisotropic. This work extends prior work of CapdeBoscq and Vogelius ({\em Math. Modelling Num. Anal.} 37, 2003) for the conductivity case. In particular, we obtain an asymptotic expansion of the difference between the displacements at the boundary with and without inclusions, under Neumann boundary conditions, to first order in the measure of the inclusions. We impose no geometric conditions on the inclusions, which need only be measurable sets. The first-order correction contains an elastic moment tensor $\MM$ that encodes the effect of the inclusions. In the case of thin, strip-like, planar inhomogeneities we obtain a formula for $\MM$ only in terms of the elasticity tensors, which we assume strongly convex, their inverses, and a frame on the curve that supports the inclusion. We prove uniqueness of $\MM$ in this setting and recover the formula previously obtained by Beretta and Francini ({\em SIAM J. Math. Anal.}, 38, 2006).

Consistency result for a non monotone scheme for anisotropic mean curvature flow

In this paper, we propose a new scheme for anisotropic motion by mean curvature in $\R^d$. The scheme consists of a phase-field approximation of the motion, where the nonlinear diffusive terms in the corresponding anisotropic Allen-Cahn equation are linearized in the Fourier space. In real space, this corresponds to the convolution with a kernel of the form \[ K_{ϕ,t}(x) = \F^{-1}\left[ e^{-4π^2 t ϕ^o(ξ)} \right](x). \] We analyse the resulting scheme, following the work of Ishii-Pires-Souganidis on the convergence of the Bence-Merriman-Osher algorithm for isotropic motion by mean curvature. The main difficulty here, is that the kernel $K_{ϕ,t}$ is not positive and that its moments of order 2 are not in $L^1(\R^d)$. Still, we can show that in one sense the scheme is consistent with the anisotropic mean curvature flow.

A priori convergence estimates for a rough Poisson-Dirichlet problem with natural vertical boundary conditions

Stents are medical devices designed to modify blood flow in aneurysm sacs, in order to prevent their rupture. Some of them can be considered as a locally periodic rough boundary. In order to approximate blood flow in arteries and vessels of the cardio-vascular system containing stents, we use multi-scale techniques to construct boundary layers and wall laws. Simplifying the flow we turn to consider a 2-dimensional Poisson problem that conserves essential features related to the rough boundary. Then, we investigate convergence of boundary layer approximations and the corresponding wall laws in the case of Neumann type boundary conditions at the inlet and outlet parts of the domain. The difficulty comes from the fact that correctors, for the boundary layers near the rough surface, may introduce error terms on the other portions of the boundary. In order to correct these spurious oscillations, we introduce a vertical boundary layer. Trough a careful study of its behavior, we prove rigorously decay estimates. We then construct complete boundary layers that respect the macroscopic boundary conditions. We also derive error estimates in terms of the roughness size epsilon either for the full boundary layer approximation and for the corresponding averaged wall law.
