Destruction of long-range order in non-collinear two-dimensional antiferromagnets by random-bond disorder

We consider frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnets, whose clean-limit ground state is characterized by non-collinear long-range order with non-zero vector chirality, and study the effects of quenched bond disorder, i.e., random exchange couplings. A single bond defect is known to induce a dipolar texture in the spin background independent of microscopic details. Using general analytical arguments as well as large-scale simulations for the classical triangular-lattice Heisenberg model, we show that any finite concentration of such defects destroys long-range order for spatial dimension $d\leq 2$, in favor of a glassy state whose correlation length in $d=2$ is exponentially large for small randomness. Our results are relevant for a wide range of layered frustrated magnets.

Conventional superconductivity in quasicrystals

Motivated by a recent experimental observation of superconductivity in the Al-Zn-Mg quasicrystal, we study the low-temperature behavior of electrons moving in the quasiperiodic potential of the Ammann-Beenker tiling in the presence of a local attraction. We employ the Bogoliubov-de Gennes approach for approximants of different sizes and determine the local pairing amplitude $Δ_{i}$ as well its spatial average, $Δ_{0}$, the superconducting order parameter. Due to the lack of periodicity of the octagonal tiling, the resulting superconducting state is inhomogeneous, but we find no evidence of the superconductivity islands, as observed in disordered systems, with $Δ_{i}\rightarrow0$ at $T_{c}$ for all sites. In the weak-coupling regime, we find that the superconducting order parameter depends appreciably on the approximant size only if the Fermi energy sits at a pseudogap in the noninteracting density of states, with $Δ_{0}$ decreasing as the system size increases. These results are in line with the experimental observations for the Al-Zn-Mg quasicrystal, and they suggest that, despite their electronic structure, quasicrystals are prone to display conventional BCS-like superconductivity.

SU(4)-symmetric spin-orbital liquids on the hyperhoneycomb lattice

We study the effective spin-orbital model that describes the magnetism of 4$d^1$ or 5$d^1$ Mott insulators in ideal tricoordinated lattices. In the limit of vanishing Hund's coupling, the model has an emergent SU(4) symmetry which is made explicit by means of a Klein transformation on pseudospin degrees of freedom. Taking the hyperhoneycomb lattice as an example, we employ parton constructions with fermionic representations of the pseudospin operators to investigate possible quantum spin-orbital liquid states. We then use variational Monte Carlo (VMC) methods to compute the energies of the projected wave functions. Our numerical results show that the lowest-energy quantum liquid corresponds to a zero-flux state with a Fermi surface of four-color fermionic partons. In spite of the Fermi surface, we demonstrate that this state is stable against tetramerization. A combination of linear flavor wave theory and VMC applied to the complete microscopic model also shows that this liquid state is stable against the formation of collinear long-range order.

Cluster-glass phase in pyrochlore XY antiferromagnets with quenched disorder

We study the impact of quenched disorder (random exchange couplings or site dilution) on easy-plane pyrochlore antiferromagnets. In the clean system, order-by-disorder selects a magnetically ordered state from a classically degenerate manifold. In the presence of randomness, however, different orders can be chosen locally depending on details of the disorder configuration. Using a combination of analytical considerations and classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we argue that any long-range-ordered magnetic state is destroyed beyond a critical level of randomness where the system breaks into magnetic domains due to random exchange anisotropies, becoming, therefore, a glass of spin clusters, in accordance with the available experimental data. These random anisotropies originate from off-diagonal exchange couplings in the microscopic Hamiltonian, establishing their relevance to other magnets with strong spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetization processes of zigzag states on the honeycomb lattice: Identifying spin models for $α$-RuCl$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$

We study the field-induced magnetization processes of extended Heisenberg-Kitaev models on the honeycomb lattice, taking into account off-diagonal and longer-range exchange interactions, using a combination of Monte-Carlo simulations, classical energy minimization, and spin-wave theory. We consider a number of different parameter sets, previously proposed to describe the magnetic behavior of $α$-RuCl$_3$ and Na$_2$IrO$_3$ with their antiferromagnetic zigzag ground states. By classifying these parameter sets, we reveal the existence of three distinct mechanisms to stabilize zigzag states, which differ in the sign of the nearest-neighbor Kitaev interaction, the role of longer-range interactions, and the magnitude of the off-diagonal $Γ_1$ interaction. While experimentally hardly distinguishable at zero field, we find that the three different scenarios lead to significantly different magnetization processes in applied magnetic fields. In particular, we show that a sizable off-diagonal interaction $Γ_1 > 0$ naturally explains the strongly anisotropic field responses observed in $α$-RuCl$_3$ without the need for a strong anisotropy in the effective $g$ tensor. Moreover, for a generic field direction, it leads to a high-field state with a finite transversal magnetization, which should be observable in $α$-RuCl$_3$.

Honeycomb-lattice Heisenberg-Kitaev model in a magnetic field: Spin canting, metamagnetism, and vortex crystals

The Heisenberg-Kitaev model is a paradigmatic model to describe the magnetism in honeycomb-lattice Mott insulators with strong spin-orbit coupling, such as A$_2$IrO$_3$ (A = Na, Li) and $α$-RuCl$_3$. Here we study in detail the physics of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model in an external magnetic field. Using a combination of Monte-Carlo simulations and spin-wave theory we map out the classical phase diagram for different directions of the magnetic field. Broken SU(2) spin symmetry renders the magnetization process rather complex, with sequences of phases and metamagnetic transitions. In particular, we find various large-unit-cell and multi-Q phases including a vortex-crystal phase for a field in the [111] direction. We also discuss quantum corrections in the high-field phase.

Non-Fermi-Liquid Behavior in Metallic Quasicrystals with Local Magnetic Moments

Motivated by the intrinsic non-Fermi-liquid behavior observed in the heavy-fermion quasicrystal $\mbox{Au}_{51}\mbox{Al}_{34}\mbox{Yb}_{15}$, we study the low-temperature behavior of dilute magnetic impurities placed in metallic quasicrystals. We find that a large fraction of the magnetic moments are not quenched down to very low temperatures $T$, leading to a power-law distribution of Kondo temperatures $P(T_{\mbox{K}})\sim T_{\mbox{K}}^{α-1}$, with a nonuniversal exponent $α$, in a remarkable similarity to the Kondo-disorder scenario found in disordered heavy-fermion metals. For $α<1$, the resulting singular $P(T_{\mbox{K}})$ induces non-Fermi-liquid behavior with diverging thermodynamic responses as $T\rightarrow0$.

Non-Gaussian Spatial Correlations Dramatically Weaken Localization

We perform variational studies of the interaction-localization problem to describe the interaction-induced renormalizations of the effective (screened) random potential seen by quasiparticles. Here we present results of careful finite-size scaling studies for the conductance of disordered Hubbard chains at half-filling and zero temperature. While our results indicate that quasiparticle wave functions remain exponentially localized even in the presence of moderate to strong repulsive interactions, we show that interactions produce a strong decrease of the characteristic conductance scale g* signaling the crossover to strong localization. This effect, which cannot be captured by a simple renormalization of the disorder strength, instead reflects a peculiar non-Gaussian form of the spatial correlations of the screened disordered potential, a hitherto neglected mechanism to dramatically reduce the impact of Anderson localization (interference) effects.

Magnetism in spin models for depleted honeycomb-lattice iridates: Spin-glass order towards percolation

Iridates are characterized by a fascinating interplay of spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions. The honeycomb-lattice materials A2IrO3 (A=Na,Li) have been proposed to realize pseudospin-1/2 Mott insulating states with strongly anisotropic exchange interactions, described by the Heisenberg-Kitaev model, but other scenarios involving longer-range exchange interactions or more delocalized electrons have been put forward as well. Here we study the influence of non-magnetic doping, i.e., depleted moments, on the magnetic properties of experimentally relevant variants of the Heisenberg-Kitaev and Heisenberg J1-J2-J3 models. We generically find that the zigzag order of the clean system is replaced, upon doping, by a spin-glass state with short-ranged zigzag correlations. We determine the spin-glass temperature as function of the doping level and argue that this quantity allows to experimentally distinguish the different proposed spin models when the doping is driven across the site percolation threshold of the honeycomb lattice.

Anderson localization and momentum-space entanglement

We consider Anderson localization and the associated metal-insulator transition for non-interacting fermions in D = 1, 2 space dimensions in the presence of spatially correlated on-site random potentials. To assess the nature of the wavefunction, we follow a recent proposal to study momentum-space entanglement. For a D = 1 model with long-range disorder correlations, both the entanglement spectrum and the entanglement entropy allow us to clearly distinguish between extended and localized states based upon a single realization of disorder. However, for other models including the D = 2 case with long-range correlated disorder, we find that the method is not similarly successful. We analyze the reasons for its failure, concluding that the much desired generalization to higher dimensions may be problematic.

Competing orders, competing anisotropies, and multicriticality: The case of Co-doped YbRh2Si2

Motivated by the unusual evolution of magnetic phases in stoichiometric and Co-doped YbRh2Si2, we study Heisenberg models with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic ordering combined with competing anisotropies in exchange interactions and g factors. Utilizing large-scale classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we analyze the ingredients required to obtain the characteristic crossing point of uniform susceptibilities observed experimentally near the ferromagnetic ordering of Yb(Rh0.73Co0.27)2Si2. The models possess multicritical points, which we speculate to be relevant for the behavior of clean as well as doped YbRh2Si2. We also make contact with experimental data on YbNi4P2 where a similar susceptibility crossing has been observed.

Singular field response and singular screening of vacancies in antiferromagnets

For isolated vacancies in ordered local-moment antiferromagnets we show that the magnetic-field linear-response limit is generically singular: The magnetic moment associated with a vacancy in zero field is different from that in a finite field h in the limit h->0. The origin is a universal and singular screening cloud, which moreover leads to perfect screening as h->0 for magnets which display spin-flop bulk states in the weak-field limit.

Disorder, cluster spin glass, and hour-glass spectra in striped magnetic insulators

Hour-glass-shaped magnetic excitation spectra have been detected in a variety of doped transition-metal oxides with stripe-like charge order. Compared to the predictions of spin-wave theory, these spectra display a different intensity distribution and anomalous broadening. Here we show, based on a comprehensive modelling of these phenomena for La5/3Sr1/3CoO4, how quenched disorder in the charge sector causes frustration, and consequently cluster-glass behavior at low temperatures, in the spin sector. This spin-glass physics, which is insensitive to the detailed nature of the charge disorder, but sensitive to the relative strength of the magnetic inter-stripe coupling, ultimately determines the distribution of magnetic spectral weight and thus causes the hour-glass spectrum.

Defect-induced spin-glass magnetism in incommensurate spin-gap magnets

We study magnetic order induced by non-magnetic impurities in quantum paramagnets with incommensurate host spin correlations. In contrast to the well-studied commensurate case where the defect-induced magnetism is spatially disordered but non-frustrated, the present problem combines strong disorder with frustration and, consequently, leads to spin-glass order. We discuss the crossover from strong randomness in the dilute limit to more conventional glass behavior at larger doping, and numerically characterize the robust short-range order inherent to the spin-glass phase. We relate our findings to magnetic order in both BiCu2PO6 and YBa2Cu3O6.6 induced by Zn substitution.
