The Microscopic Origin of the Macroscopic Dielectric Permittivity of Crystals: A Mathematical Viewpoint

The purpose of this paper is to provide a mathematical analysis of the Adler-Wiser formula relating the macroscopic relative permittivity tensor to the microscopic structure of the crystal at the atomic level. The technical level of the presentation is kept at its minimum to emphasize the mathematical structure of the results. We also briefly review some models describing the electronic structure of finite systems, focusing on density operator based formulations, as well as the Hartree model for perfect crystals or crystals with a defect.

Local defects are always neutral in the Thomas-Fermi-von Weiszäcker theory of crystals

The aim of this article is to propose a mathematical model describing the electronic structure of crystals with local defects in the framework of the Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker (TFW) theory. The approach follows the same lines as that used in {\it E. Cancès, A. Deleurence and M. Lewin, Commun. Math. Phys., 281 (2008), pp. 129--177} for the reduced Hartree-Fock model, and is based on thermodynamic limit arguments. We prove in particular that it is not possible to model charged defects within the TFW theory of crystals. We finally derive some additional properties of the TFW ground state electronic density of a crystal with a local defect, in the special case when the host crystal is modelled by a homogeneous medium.

Numerical analysis of the planewave discretization of some orbital-free and Kohn-Sham models

We provide a priori error estimates for the spectral and pseudospectral Fourier (also called planewave) discretizations of the periodic Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker (TFW) model and for the spectral discretization of the Kohn-Sham model, within the local density approximation (LDA). These models allow to compute approximations of the ground state energy and density of molecular systems in the condensed phase. The TFW model is stricly convex with respect to the electronic density, and allows for a comprehensive analysis. This is not the case for the Kohn-Sham LDA model, for which the uniqueness of the ground state electronic density is not guaranteed. Under a coercivity assumption on the second order optimality condition, we prove that for large enough energy cut-offs, the discretized Kohn-Sham LDA problem has a minimizer in the vicinity of any Kohn-Sham ground state, and that this minimizer is unique up to unitary transform. We then derive optimal a priori error estimates for the spectral discretization method.

Numerical analysis of the planewave discretization of orbital-free and Kohn-Sham models Part I: The Thomas-Fermi-von Weizacker model

We provide {\it a priori} error estimates for the spectral and pseudospectral Fourier (also called planewave) discretizations of the periodic Thomas-Fermi-von Weizsäcker (TFW) model and of the Kohn-Sham model, within the local density approximation (LDA). These models allow to compute approximations of the ground state energy and density of molecular systems in the condensed phase. The TFW model is stricly convex with respect to the electronic density, and allows for a comprehensive analysis (Part I). This is not the case for the Kohn-Sham LDA model, for which the uniqueness of the ground state electronic density is not guaranteed. Under a coercivity assumption on the second order optimality condition, we prove in Part II that for large enough energy cut-offs, the discretized Kohn-Sham LDA problem has a minimizer in the vicinity of any Kohn-Sham ground state, and that this minimizer is unique up to unitary transform. We then derive optimal {\it a priori} error estimates for both the spectral and the pseudospectral discretization methods.

Numerical analysis of nonlinear eigenvalue problems

We provide a priori error estimates for variational approximations of the ground state eigenvalue and eigenvector of nonlinear elliptic eigenvalue problems of the form $-{div} (A\nabla u) + Vu + f(u^2) u = λu$, $\|u\|_{L^2}=1$. We focus in particular on the Fourier spectral approximation (for periodic problems) and on the $¶_1$ and $¶_2$ finite-element discretizations. Denoting by $(u_δ,λ_δ)$ a variational approximation of the ground state eigenpair $(u,λ)$, we are interested in the convergence rates of $\|u_δ-u\|_{H^1}$, $\|u_δ-u\|_{L^2}$ and $|λ_δ-λ|$, when the discretization parameter $δ$ goes to zero. We prove that if $A$, $V$ and $f$ satisfy certain conditions, $|λ_δ-λ|$ goes to zero as $\|u_δ-u\|_{H^1}^2+\|u_δ-u\|_{L^2}$. We also show that under more restrictive assumptions on $A$, $V$ and $f$, $|λ_δ-λ|$ converges to zero as $\|u_δ-u\|_{H^1}^2$, thus recovering a standard result for {\em linear} elliptic eigenvalue problems. For the latter analysis, we make use of estimates of the error $u_δ-u$ in negative Sobolev norms.

The Dielectric Permittivity of Crystals in the reduced Hartree-Fock approximation

In a recent article (Cancès, Deleurence and Lewin, Commun. Math. Phys., 281 (2008), pp. 129-177), we have rigorously derived, by means of bulk limit arguments, a new variational model to describe the electronic ground state of insulating or semiconducting crystals in the presence of local defects. In this so-called reduced Hartree-Fock model, the ground state electronic density matrix is decomposed as $γ= γ^0_{\rm per} + Q_{ν,ε_{\rm F}}$, where $γ^0_{\rm per}$ is the ground state density matrix of the host crystal and $Q_{ν,ε_{\rm F}}$ the modification of the electronic density matrix generated by a modification $ν$ of the nuclear charge of the host crystal, the Fermi level $ε_{\rm F}$ being kept fixed. The purpose of the present article is twofold. First, we study more in details the mathematical properties of the density matrix $Q_{ν,ε_{\rm F}}$ (which is known to be a self-adjoint Hilbert-Schmidt operator on $L^2(\R^3)$). We show in particular that if $\int_{\RR^3} ν\neq 0$, $Q_{ν,ε_{\rm F}}$ is not trace-class. Moreover, the associated density of charge is not in $L^1(\R^3)$ if the crystal exhibits anisotropic dielectric properties. These results are obtained by analyzing, for a small defect $ν$, the linear and nonlinear terms of the resolvent expansion of $Q_{ν,ε_{\rm F}}$. Second, we show that, after an appropriate rescaling, the potential generated by the microscopic total charge (nuclear plus electronic contributions) of the crystal in the presence of the defect, converges to a homogenized electrostatic potential solution to a Poisson equation involving the macroscopic dielectric permittivity of the crystal. This provides an alternative (and rigorous) derivation of the Adler-Wiser formula.

On Kohn-Sham models with LDA and GGA exchange-correlation functionals

This article is concerned with the mathematical analysis of the Kohn-Sham and extended Kohn-Sham models, in the local density approximation (LDA) and generalized gradient approximation (GGA) frameworks. After recalling the mathematical derivation of the Kohn-Sham and extended Kohn-Sham LDA and GGA models from the Schrödinger equation, we prove that the extended Kohn-Sham LDA model has a solution for neutral and positively charged systems. We then prove a similar result for the spin-unpolarized Kohn-Sham GGA model for two-electron systems, by means of a concentration-compactness argument.

A new approach to the modelling of local defects in crystals: the reduced Hartree-Fock case

This article is concerned with the derivation and the mathematical study of a new mean-field model for the description of interacting electrons in crystals with local defects. We work with a reduced Hartree-Fock model, obtained from the usual Hartree-Fock model by neglecting the exchange term. First, we recall the definition of the self-consistent Fermi sea of the perfect crystal, which is obtained as a minimizer of some periodic problem, as was shown by Catto, Le Bris and Lions. We also prove some of its properties which were not mentioned before. Then, we define and study in details a nonlinear model for the electrons of the crystal in the presence of a defect. We use formal analogies between the Fermi sea of a perturbed crystal and the Dirac sea in Quantum Electrodynamics in the presence of an external electrostatic field. The latter was recently studied by Hainzl, Lewin, Séré and Solovej, based on ideas from Chaix and Iracane. This enables us to define the ground state of the self-consistent Fermi sea in the presence of a defect. We end the paper by proving that our model is in fact the thermodynamic limit of the so-called supercell model, widely used in numerical simulations.

An efficient sampling algorithm for Variational Monte Carlo

We propose a new algorithm for sampling the $N$-body density $|Ψ({\bf R})|^2/\int_{\mathbb{R}^{3N}} |Ψ|^2$ in the Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) framework. This algorithm is based upon a modified Ricci-Ciccotti discretization of the Langevin dynamics in the phase space $({\bf R},{\bf P})$ improved by a Metropolis acceptation/rejection step. We show through some representative numerical examples (Lithium, Fluorine and Copper atoms, and phenol molecule), that this algorithm is superior to the standard sampling algorithm based on the biased random walk (importance sampling).

Well-posedness of a multiscale model for concentrated suspensions

In a previous work [math.AP/0305408] three of us have studied a nonlinear parabolic equation arising in the mesoscopic modelling of concentrated suspensions of particles that are subjected to a given time-dependent shear rate. In the present work we extend the model to allow for a more physically relevant situation when the shear rate actually depends on the macroscopic velocity of the fluid, and as a feedback the macroscopic velocity is influenced by the average stress in the fluid. The geometry considered is that of a planar Couette flow. The mathematical system under study couples the one-dimensional heat equation and a nonlinear Fokker-Planck type equation with nonhomogeneous, nonlocal and possibly degenerate, coefficients. We show the existence and the uniqueness of the global-in-time weak solution to such a system.

Mathematical analysis of a nonlinear parabolic equation arising in the modelling of non-newtonian flows

The mathematical properties of a nonlinear parabolic equation arising in the modelling of non-newtonian flows are investigated. The peculiarity of this equation is that it may degenerate into a hyperbolic equation (in fact a linear advection equation). Depending on the initial data, at least two situations can be encountered: the equation may have a unique solution in a convenient class, or it may have infinitely many solutions.
