Overcoming the Back Reaction on Turbulent Motions in the Presence of Magnetic Fields

Standard magnetohydrodynamic theories, such as the mean field dynamo theory, have been criticized when the back reaction of the magnetic field on turbulent motions is neglected. For the dynamo, this back reaction has been argued to suppress the turbulent motions required for optimal mean field production. Here it is suggested that if the magnetic field is spatially intermittent, for example residing in flux tubes, the back reaction on turbulent flows may be significantly reduced.

Can the Formation of X-ray Obscuring Tori and Jets in Active Galaxies be Determined by One Parameter?

A torus of reduced differential rotation can form in the inner $\siml 10$pc core of active galactic nuclei incurring a density enhancement that can account for obscuration of X-rays in Seyferts when the initial inner core to black hole mass ratio $\gsim 50$. The same density enhancement and reduction in differential rotation can also lead to dynamo growth of poloidal fields which attain a magnitude $\sim 10^4$G when accreted onto the central engine. As radio jet models often employ poloidal fields as agents in extracting power for the jet luminosity, we suggest that jetted AGN might require this poloidal field production. Although the poloidal field would be originally produced in the obscuring torus, jetted objects are less likely to have obscuring tori: The poloidal field would only aid in powering jet emission after it accretes with the torus matter to the central engine. Thus, only during the relatively short torus accretion time scale could there be both a jet and and torus.

A magnetic field diagnostic for sonoluminescence

This study is motivated by the extraordinary process of single bubble sonoluminescence (SBSL), where an acoustically driven spherical shock is thought to power the emitted radiation. We propose new experiments using an external magnetic field which can induce anisotropies in both the shock propagation and radiation pattern. The effects will depend on the temperature, conductivity, and size of the radiating region. Our predictions suggest that such a laboratory experiment could serve as an important diagnostic in placing bounds on these parameters and understanding the physics of sonoluminescence.

Reconnecting Magnetic Flux Tubes as a Source of In Situ Acceleration in Extragalactic Radio Sources

Many extended extragalactic radio sources require a local {\it in situ\/} acceleration mechanism for electrons, in part because the synchrotron lifetimes are shorter than the bulk travel time across the emitting regions. If the magnetic field in these sources is localized in flux tubes, reconnection may occur between regions of plasma $\be$ (ratio of particle to magnetic pressure) $<<1$, even though $β$ averaged over the plasma volume may be $\gsim 1$. Reconnection in low $β$ regions is most favorable to acceleration from reconnection shocks. The reconnection X-point regions may provide the injection electrons for their subsequent non-thermal shock acceleration to distributions reasonably consistent with observed spectra. Flux tube reconnection might therefore be able to provide $in\ situ$ acceleration required by large scale jets and lobes.

Non-thermal Acceleration from Reconnection Shocks

Reconnection shocks in a magnetically dominated plasma must be compressive. Non-thermal ion acceleration can occur across built-in slow shocks, and across outflow fast shocks when the outflow is supermagnetosonic and the field is line-tied. Electron acceleration may be initiated by injection from the dissipation region. Reconnection and shock acceleration thus cooperate and non-thermal acceleration should be a characteristic feature.

Ohm's Law for a Relativistic Pair Plasma

We derive the fully relativistic Ohm's law for an electron-positron plasma. The absence of non-resistive terms in Ohm's law and the natural substitution of the 4-velocity for the velocity flux in the relativistic bulk plasma equations do not require the field gradient length scale to be much larger than the lepton inertial lengths, or the existence of a frame in which the distribution functions are isotropic.
