Finitely Presented Monoids and Algebras defined by Permutation Relations of Abelian Type

The class of finitely presented algebras over a field K with a set of generators a_1,...,a_n and defined by homogeneous relations of the form a_1a_2...a_n = a_{sigma(1)}a_{sigma(2)}...a_{sigma(n)}, where sigma runs through an abelian subgroup H of Sym_{n}, the symmetric group, is considered. It is proved that the Jacobson radical of such algebras is zero. Also, it is characterized when the monoid S_n(H), with the "same" presentation as the algebra, is cancellative in terms of the stabilizer of 1 and the stabilizer of n in H. This work is a continuation of earlier work of Cedo, Jespers and Okninski.

Algebras and groups defined by permutation relations of alternating type

The class of finitely presented algebras over a field $K$ with a set of generators $a_{1},..., a_{n}$ and defined by homogeneous relations of the form $a_{1}a_{2}... a_{n} =a_{σ(1)} a_{σ(2)} ... a_{σ(n)}$, where $σ$ runs through $\Alt_{n}$, the alternating group, is considered. The associated group, defined by the same (group) presentation, is described. A description of the radical of the algebra is found. It turns out that the radical is a finitely generated ideal that is nilpotent and it is determined by a congruence on the underlying monoid, defined by the same presentation.

Normal domains with monomial presentations

Let A be a finitely generated commutative algebra over a field K with a presentation A=K < X_{1}, ..., X_{n} | R >, where R is a set of monomial relations in the generators X_{1}, ..., X_{n}. So A = K[S], the semigroup algebra of the monoid S=< X_{1}, ..., X_{n} | R >. We characterize, purely in terms of the defining relations, when A is an integrally closed domain, provided R contains at most two relations. Also the class group of such algebras A is calculated.

Retractability of set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation

It is shown that square free set theoretic involutive non-degenerate solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation whose associated permutation group (referred to as an involutive Yang-Baxter group) is abelian are retractable in the sense of Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev. This solves a problem of Gateva-Ivanova in the case of abelian IYB groups. It also implies that the corresponding finitely presented abelian-by-finite groups (called the structure groups) are poly-${\mathbb Z}$ groups. Secondly, an example of a solution with an abelian involutive Yang-Baxter group which is not a generalized twisted union is constructed. This answers in the negative another problem of Gateva-Ivanova. The constructed solution is of multipermutation level 3. Retractability of solutions is also proved in the case where the natural generators of the IYB group are cyclic permutations. Moreover, it is shown that such solutions are generalized twisted unions.

Involutive Yang-Baxter Groups

In 1992 Drinfeld posed the question of finding the set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation. Recently, Gateva-Ivanova and Van den Bergh and Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev have shown a group theoretical interpretation of involutive non-degenerate solutions. Namely, there is a one-to-one correspondence between involutive non-degenerate solutions on finite sets and groups of $I$-type. A group $\mathcal{G}$ of $I$-type is a group isomorphic to a subgroup of the natural semidirect product of $Fa_n$, the free abelian group of rank $n$, by $Sym_n$, the symmetric group on $n$ letters, so that the projection onto $Fa_n$ is a bijective map. The projection of $\mathcal{G}$ onto $Sym_n$ we call an involutive Yang-Baxter group (IYB group). This suggests the following strategy to attack Drinfeld's problem for involutive non-degenerate set theoretic solutions. First classify the IYB groups and second, for a given IYB group $G$, classify the groups of $I$-type with $G$ as associated IYB group. It is known that every IYB group is solvable. In this paper some results supporting the converse of this property are obtained. More precisely, we show that some classes of groups are IYB groups. We also give a non-obvious method to construct infinitely many groups of $I$-type (and hence infinitely many involutive non-degenerate set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation) with a prescribed associated IYB group.

Class-preserving automorphisms and the normalizer property for Blackburn groups

For a group $G$, let $U$ be the group of units of the integral group ring $\mathbb{Z}G$. The group $G$ is said to have the normalizer property if $\text{N}_U(G)=\text{Z}(U)G$. It is shown that Blackburn groups have the normalizer property. These are the groups which have non-normal finite subgroups, with the intersection of all of them being nontrivial. Groups $G$ for which class-preserving automorphisms are inner automorphisms, $\text{Out}_c(G)=1$, have the normalizer property. Recently, Herman and Li have shown that $\text{Out}_c(G)=1$ for a finite Blackburn group $G$. We show that $\text{out}_c(G)=1$ for the members $G$ of a few classes of metabelian groups, from which the Herman--Li result follows. Together with recent work of Hertweck, Iwaki, Jespers and Juriaans, our main result implies that, for an arbitrary group $G$, the group of hypercentral units of $U$ is contained in $\text{Z}(U)G$.

Monoids of IG-type and Maximal Orders

Let G be a finite group that acts on an abelian monoid A. If f: A -> G is a map so that f(a f(a)(b)) = f(a)f(b), for all a, b in A, then the submonoid S = {(a, f(a)) | a in A} of the associated semidirect product of A and G is said to be a monoid of IG-type. If A is a finitely generated free abelian monoid of rank n and G is a subgroup of the symmetric group Sym_n of degree n, then these monoids first appeared in the work of Gateva-Ivanova and Van den Bergh (they are called monoids of I-type) and later in the work of Jespers and Okninski. It turns out that their associated semigroup algebras share many properties with polynomial algebras in finitely many commuting variables. In this paper we first note that finitely generated monoids S of IG-type are epimorphic images of monoids of I-type and their algebras K[S] are Noetherian and satisfy a polynomial identity. In case the group of fractions of S also is torsion-free then it is characterized when K[S] is a maximal order. It turns out that they often are, and hence these algebras again share arithmetical properties with natural classes of commutative algebras. The characterization is in terms of prime ideals of S, in particular G-orbits of minimal prime ideals in A play a crucial role. Hence, we first describe the prime ideals of S. It also is described when the group of fractions is torsion-free.

Semigroup algebras of submonoids of polycyclic-by-finite groups and maximal orders

Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for a prime Noetherian algebra K[S] of a submonoid S of a polycyclic-by-finite group G to be a maximal order. These conditions are entirely in terms of the monoid S. This extends earlier results of Brown concerned with the group ring case and of the authors for the case where K[S] satisfies a polynomial identity.

Primes of height one and a class of Noetherian finitely presented algebras

Constructions are given of Noetherian maximal orders that are finitely presented algebras over a field K, defined by monomial relations. In order to do this, it is shown that the underlying homogeneous information determines the algebraic structure of the algebra. So, it is natural to consider such algebras as semigroup algebras K[S] and to investigate the structure of the monoid S. The relationship between the prime ideals of the algebra and those of the monoid S is one of the main tools. Results analogous to fundamental facts known for the prime spectrum of algebras graded by a finite group are obtained. This is then applied to characterize a large class of prime Noetherian maximal orders that satisfy a polynomial identity, based on a special class of submonoids of polycyclic-by-finite groups. The main results are illustrated with new constructions of concrete classes of finitely presented algebras of this type.

Quadratic algebras of skew type and the underlying semigroups

We consider algebras over a field K defined by a presentation K , where $R$ consists of n choose 2 square-free relations of the form x_i x_j = x_k x_l with every monomial x_i x_j, i different from j, appearing in one of the relations. Certain sufficient conditions for the algebra to be noetherian and PI are determined. For this, we prove more generally that right noetherian algebras of finite Gelfand-Kirillov dimension defined by homogeneous relations satisfy a polynomial identity. The structure of the underlying monoid, defined by the same presentation, is described. This is used to derive information on the prime radical and minimal prime ideals. Some examples are described in detail. Earlier, Etingof, Schedler and Soloviev, Gateva-Ivanova and Van den Bergh, and the authors considered special classes of such algebras in the contexts of noetherian algebras, Grobner bases, finitely generated solvable groups, semigroup algebras, and set theoretic solutions of the Yang-Baxter equation.
