Can we define a best estimator in simple 1-D cases ?

With a small number of measurements, the three most well known estimators of a single parameter give very different results when estimating a scale parameter. A transformation of this scale parameter to a location parameter by using logarithms of the data rends the three estimators equivalent in the absence of any a priori information.

Realization of the purely spatial Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen paradox in full-field images of spontaneous parametric down conversion

We demonstrate Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) entanglement by detecting purely spatial quantum correlations in the near and far fields of spontaneous parametric down-conversion generated in a type-2 beta barium borate crystal. Full-field imaging is performed in the photon-counting regime with an electron-multiplying CCD camera. The data are used without any postselection, and we obtain a violation of Heisenberg inequalities with inferred quantities taking into account all the biphoton pairs in both the near and far fields by integration on the entire two-dimensional transverse planes. This ensures a rigorous demonstration of the EPR paradox in its original position momentum form.

Learning Bayesian Network Structure from Correlation-Immune Data

Searching the complete space of possible Bayesian networks is intractable for problems of interesting size, so Bayesian network structure learning algorithms, such as the commonly used Sparse Candidate algorithm, employ heuristics. However, these heuristics also restrict the types of relationships that can be learned exclusively from data. They are unable to learn relationships that exhibit "correlation-immunity", such as parity. To learn Bayesian networks in the presence of correlation-immune relationships, we extend the Sparse Candidate algorithm with a technique called "skewing". This technique uses the observation that relationships that are correlation-immune under a specific input distribution may not be correlation-immune under another, sufficiently different distribution. We show that by extending Sparse Candidate with this technique we are able to discover relationships between random variables that are approximately correlation-immune, with a significantly lower computational cost than the alternative of considering multiple parents of a node at a time.

Comment on "Observation of anticorrelation in incoherent thermal light fields"

Recently, Chen \em et al \rm.\ [Phys. Rev. A 84, 033835 (2011)] reported observation of anticorrelated photon coincidences in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer whose input light came from a mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser that had been rendered spatially incoherent by passage through a rotating ground-glass diffuser. They provided a quantum-mechanical explanation of their results, which ascribes the anticorrelation to two-photon interference. They also developed a classical-light treatment of the experiment, and showed that it was incapable of explaining the anticorrelation behavior. Here we show that semiclassical photodetection theory---i.e., classical electromagnetic fields plus photodetector shot noise---does indeed explain the anticorrelation found by Chen \em et al \rm.\ The key to our analysis is proper accounting for the disparate time scales associated with the laser's pulse duration, the speckle-correlation time, the interferometer's differential delay, and the duration of the photon-coincidence gate. Our result is consistent with the long-accepted dictum that laser light which has undergone linear-optics transformations is classical-state light, so that the quantum and semiclassical theories of photodetection yield quantitatively identical results for its measurement statistics. The interpretation provided by Chen \em et al \rm. for their observations implicitly contradicts that dictum

Multi-imaging and Bayesian estimation for photon counting with EMCCD's

A multi-imaging strategy is proposed and experimentally tested to improve the accuracy of photon counting with an electron multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD), by taking into account the random nature of its on-chip gain and the possibility of multiple photo-detection events on one pixel. This strategy is based on Bayesian estimation on each image, with a priori information given by the sum of the images. The method works even for images with large dynamic range, with more improvement in the low light level areas. In these areas, two thirds of the variance added by the EMCCD in a conventional imaging mode are removed, making the physical photon noise predominant in the detected image.

Quantum fluctuations and correlations of spatial scalar or multimode vector solitons in Kerr media

We apply the Green's function method to determine the global degree of squeezing and the transverse spatial distribution of quantum fluctuations of solitons in Kerr media. We show that both scalar bright solitons and multimode vector solitons experience strong squeezing on the optimal quadrature. For vector solitons, this squeezing is shown to result from an almost perfect anti-correlation between the fluctuations on the two incoherently-coupled circular polarisations.
