Energetics of quantum correlations

We consider a photo--Carnot engine that consists of a single--mode radiation field in an optical cavity. One the heat reservoirs is made of a beam of thermally entangled pairs of two--level atoms that interact resonantly with the cavity. We express the thermodynamic efficiency of the engine in terms of the quantum discord of the atomic pair and find that it can exceed its classical value. Our results show that useful work can be extracted from quantum correlations, indicating that the latter are a valuable resource in quantum thermodynamics.

Memory erasure in small systems

We consider an overdamped nanoparticle in a driven double-well potential as a generic model of an erasable one-bit memory. We study in detail the statistics of the heat dissipated during an erasure process and show that full erasure may be achieved by dissipating less heat than the Landauer bound. We quantify the occurrence of such events and propose a single-particle experiment to verify our predictions. Our results show that Landauer's principle has to be generalized at the nanoscale to accommodate heat fluctuations.

Quantum Smoluchowski equation for driven systems

We consider a driven quantum harmonic oscillator strongly coupled to a heat bath. Starting from the exact quantum Langevin equation, we use a Green's function approach to determine the corresponding semiclassical equation for the Wigner phase space distribution. In the limit of high friction, we apply Brinkman's method to derive the quantum Smoluchowski equation for the probability distribution in position space. We further determine the range of validity of the equation and discuss the special case of a Brownian parametric oscillator.

Entanglement Resonance in Driven Spin Chains

We consider a spin-1/2 anisotropic XY model with time-dependent spin-spin coupling as means of creating long-distance entanglement. We predict the emergence of significant entanglement between the first and the last spin whenever the ac part of the coupling has a frequency matching the Zeeman splitting. In particular, we find that the concurrence assumes its maximum with a vanishing dc part. Mapping the time-dependent Hamiltonian within a rotating-wave approximation to an effective static model provides qualitative and quantitative understanding of this entanglement resonance. Numerical results for the duration of the entanglement creation and its length dependence substantiate the effective static picture.

Nonequilibrium thermodynamics of a squeezed harmonic oscillator

We consider the thermodynamic properties of the squeezed vacuum state of a frequency--modulated quantum harmonic oscillator. We analytically relate the squeezing parameter to the irreversible work and the degree of nonadiabaticity of the frequency transformation. We furthermore determine the optimal modulation that leads to maximal squeezing, and discuss its implementation as well as the detection of squeezing in single cold ion traps.

System-bath entanglement in nanothermodynamics

We consider a quantum harmonic oscillator linearly coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators and evaluate the degree of entanglement between system and bath using the negativity as an exact entanglement measure. We establish the existence of a critical temperature above which the system-bath negativity vanishes. Our results imply that system-bath entanglement is not responsible for the violation of the Clausius inequality observed in the low temperature/strong coupling regime [Phys. Rev. Lett. 85, 1799 (2000)], as the latter still occurs well above the critical temperature.

Employing trapped cold ions to verify the quantum Jarzynski equality

We propose a scheme to investigate the nonequilibrium work distribution of a quantum particle under well controlled transformations of the external potential, exploiting the versatility of a single ion in a segmented linear Paul trap. We describe in detail how the motional quantum state of a single ion can be prepared, manipulated and finally read out to fully determine the free energy difference in both harmonic and anharmonic potentials. Uniquely to our system, we show how an ion may be immersed in an engineered laser--field reservoir. Trapped ions therefore represent an ideal tool for investigating the Jarzynski equality in open and closed quantum systems.

Optimal nonequilibrium entanglement of nanomechanical oscillators

We investigate nonequilibrium entanglement generation in a chain of harmonic oscillators with time-dependent linear coupling. We use optimal control theory to determine the coupling modulation that leads to maximum logarithmic negativity for a pair of opposite oscillators and show that it corresponds to a synchronization of the eigenmodes of the chain. We further analytically relate the maximum attainable entanglement to the irreversible work done to produce it, thus bridging nonequilibrium entanglement production and nonequilibrium thermodynamics.

Controlled decoherence in a quantum Lévy kicked rotator

We develop a theory describing the dynamics of quantum kicked rotators (modelling cold atoms in a pulsed optical field) which are subjected to combined amplitude and timing noise generated by a renewal process (acting as an engineered reservoir). For waiting-time distributions of variable exponent (Lévy noise), we demonstrate the existence of a regime of nonexponential loss of phase coherence. In this regime, the momentum dynamics is subdiffusive, which also manifests itself in a non-Gaussian limiting distribution and a fractional power-law decay of the inverse participation ratio. The purity initially decays with a stretched exponential which is followed by two regimes of power-law decay with different exponents. The averaged logarithm of the fidelity probes the sprinkling distribution of the renewal process. These analytical results are confirmed by numerical computations on quantum kicked rotators subjected to noise events generated by a Yule-Simon distribution.

Nonequilibrium work distribution of a quantum harmonic oscillator

We analytically calculate the work distribution of a quantum harmonic oscillator with arbitrary time-dependent angular frequency. We provide detailed expressions for the work probability density for adiabatic and nonadiabatic processes, in the limit of low and high temperature. We further verify the validity of the quantum Jarzynski equality

Fluctuation theorems: Work is not an observable

The characteristic function of the work performed by an external time-dependent force on a Hamiltonian quantum system is identified with the time-ordered correlation function of the exponentiated system's Hamiltonian. A similar expression is obtained for the averaged exponential work which is related to the free energy difference of equilibrium systems by the Jarzynski work theorem.

Chirping a two-photon transition in a multi-state ladder

We consider a two-photon transition in a specific ladder system driven by a chirped laser pulse. In the weak field limit, we find that the excited state probability amplitude arises due to interference of multiple quantum paths which are weighted by quadratic phase factors. The excited state population has the form of a Gauss sum which plays a prominent role in number theory.

Nonexponential decoherence and momentum subdiffusion in a quantum Lévy kicked rotator

We investigate decoherence in the quantum kicked rotator (modelling cold atoms in a pulsed optical field) subjected to noise with power-law tail waiting-time distributions of variable exponent (Levy noise). We demonstrate the existence of a regime of nonexponential decoherence where the notion of a decoherence rate is ill-defined. In this regime, dynamical localization is never fully destroyed, indicating that the dynamics of the quantum system never reaches the classical limit. We show that this leads to quantum subdiffusion of the momentum, which should be observable in an experiment.

Analytical results for a Fokker-Planck equation in the small noise limit

We present analytical results for the lowest cumulants of a stochastic process described by a Fokker-Planck equation with nonlinear drift. We show that, in the limit of small fluctuations, the mean, the variance and the covariance of the process can be expressed in compact form with the help of the Lambert W function. As an application, we discuss the interplay of noise and nonlinearity far from equilibrium.

Power-law tail distributions and nonergodicity

We establish an explicit correspondence between ergodicity breaking in a system described by power-law tail distributions and the divergence of the moments of these distributions.

Non-Equilibrium Statistical Mechanics of Classical and Quantum Systems

We study the statistical mechanics of classical and quantum systems in non-equilibrium steady states. Emphasis is placed on systems in strong thermal gradients. Various measures and functional forms of observables are presented. The quantum problem is set up using random matrix techniques, which allows for the construction of the master equation. Special solutions are discussed.

Universality of quantum Brownian motion

Are Markovian master equations for quantum Brownian motion independent of model assumptions used in the derivation and, thus, universal? With the aim of answering this question, we use a random band-matrix model for the system-bath interaction to derive Markovian master equations for the time evolution of one-dimensional quantum systems weakly coupled to a heat bath. We study in detail two simple systems, the harmonic oscillator and the two-level system. Our results are in complete agreement with those of earlier models, like the Caldeira-Legget model and, in the large-band limit, with the Agarwal equations (both with and without rotating-wave approximation). This proves the universality of these master equations.
