Nonparametric inference of photon energy distribution from indirect measurements

We consider a density estimation problem arising in nuclear physics. Gamma photons are impinging on a semiconductor detector, producing pulses of current. The integral of this pulse is equal to the total amount of charge created by the photon in the detector, which is linearly related to the photon energy. Because the inter-arrival of photons can be shorter than the charge collection time, pulses corresponding to different photons may overlap leading to a phenomenon known as pileup. The distortions on the photon energy spectrum estimate due to pileup become worse when the photon rate increases, making pileup correction techniques a must for high counting rate experiments. In this paper, we present a novel technique to correct pileup, which extends a method introduced in \cite{hall:park:2004} for the estimation of the service time from the busy period in M/G/$\infty$ models. It is based on a novel formula linking the joint distribution of the energy and duration of the cluster of pulses and the distribution of the energy of the photons. We then assess the performance of this estimator by providing an expression of its integrated square error. A Monte-Carlo experiment is presented to illustrate on practical examples the benefits of the pileup correction.

On recursive estimation for time varying autoregressive processes

This paper focuses on recursive estimation of time varying autoregressive processes in a nonparametric setting. The stability of the model is revisited and uniform results are provided when the time-varying autoregressive parameters belong to appropriate smoothness classes. An adequate normalization for the correction term used in the recursive estimation procedure allows for very mild assumptions on the innovations distributions. The rate of convergence of the pointwise estimates is shown to be minimax in $β$-Lipschitz classes for $0<β\leq1$. For $1<β\leq 2$, this property no longer holds. This can be seen by using an asymptotic expansion of the estimation error. A bias reduction method is then proposed for recovering the minimax rate.

Bounds on Regeneration Times and Limit Theorems for Subgeometric Markov Chains

This paper studies limit theorems for Markov Chains with general state space under conditions which imply subgeometric ergodicity. We obtain a central limit theorem and moderate deviation principles for additive not necessarily bounded functional of the Markov chains under drift and minorization conditions which are weaker than the Foster-Lyapunov conditions. The regeneration-split chain method and a precise control of the modulated moment of the hitting time to small sets are employed in the proof.

Computable Convergence Rates for Subgeometrically Ergodic Markov Chains

In this paper, we give quantitative bounds on the $f$-total variation distance from convergence of an Harris recurrent Markov chain on an arbitrary under drift and minorisation conditions implying ergodicity at a sub-geometric rate. These bounds are then specialized to the stochastically monotone case, covering the case where there is no minimal reachable element. The results are illustrated on two examples from queueing theory and Markov Chain Monte Carlo.

Comparison of Resampling Schemes for Particle Filtering

This contribution is devoted to the comparison of various resampling approaches that have been proposed in the literature on particle filtering. It is first shown using simple arguments that the so-called residual and stratified methods do yield an improvement over the basic multinomial resampling approach. A simple counter-example showing that this property does not hold true for systematic resampling is given. Finally, some results on the large-sample behavior of the simple bootstrap filter algorithm are given. In particular, a central limit theorem is established for the case where resampling is performed using the residual approach.

Asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator in autoregressive models with Markov regime

An autoregressive process with Markov regime is an autoregressive process for which the regression function at each time point is given by a nonobservable Markov chain. In this paper we consider the asymptotic properties of the maximum likelihood estimator in a possibly nonstationary process of this kind for which the hidden state space is compact but not necessarily finite. Consistency and asymptotic normality are shown to follow from uniform exponential forgetting of the initial distribution for the hidden Markov chain conditional on the observations.

Practical drift conditions for subgeometric rates of convergence

We present a new drift condition which implies rates of convergence to the stationary distribution of the iterates of a ψ-irreducible aperiodic and positive recurrent transition kernel. This condition, extending a condition introduced by Jarner and Roberts [Ann. Appl. Probab. 12 (2002) 224-247] for polynomial convergence rates, turns out to be very convenient to prove subgeometric rates of convergence. Several applications are presented including nonlinear autoregressive models, stochastic unit root models and multidimensional random walk Hastings-Metropolis algorithms.
